OUR MISSION AND PROGRAM

CSFB is Baltimore’s only need-based scholarship program providing low-income Baltimore City students with tuition assistance to attend kindergarten-8th grade at the school of their choice.

We award our scholarships without regard to gender, race, grades or test scores, ethnicity or religious belief.

269 CSFB provided tuition assistance to 269 students in FY 2015 (July 2014-June 2015).

STUDENTS

49 CSFB scholars attended 49 schools.

SCHOOLS

$500 Scholarships are partial – up to $2,000 per student – with families paying a minimum of $500 per year of tuition. PER YEAR

BELOW Every family who received a scholarship from CSFB is at or below 270% of the federal poverty level.

When a family is selected from our wait list, scholarships are awarded to all eligible children in that household.

CSFB OUTCOMES…

In Baltimore, data from an independent study conducted with funding from The Friedman Foundation measured high school graduation rates and college attendance rates of CSFB scholars. The study reported exceptional results!

IMPROVED HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION RATES

“Our study found that CSFB scholarship recipients had indeed been highly successful in their post elementary-school educational achievements. Nearly all CSFB Alumni contacted had graduated from high school five years after 8th grade – 97%.”

COLLEGE ATTENDANCE

“Enrollment in college – two-year and four-year – post high school was also very high at 84% five to 10 years after 8th grade.”

CSFB scholarships demonstrate that a relatively small philanthropic investment – the average scholarship was $1,864 last year – combined with a contribution from the family, can provide a private school education, and a better chance of graduating from high school and attending college.

The Baltimore Next Generation Investing Event is held annually and showcases premier investors who present their top equity investment ideas of the moment.

This unique event features speakers who rarely share their specific stock ideas in a public forum. These successful world-class investors agree to speak because the proceeds from the event go to three Baltimore non-profit organizations that help improve educational choices for local children: CSFB, Southwest Baltimore Charter School and KIPP : Baltimore.

CSFB received funding of over $50,000 from the event.

Special thanks to trustee Matt Wyskiel and his committee for this significant contribution to fund our mission and program!

For more information and to learn about the 2015 event, visit www.nextgeninvesting.org/web2015/Default.aspx.

NEXT GENERATION INVESTING EVENT

Some of Baltimore’s best in fashion and nightlife came together for CSFB’s first ever benefit fashion show.

The creative minds behind the boutiques Star Won and Christopher Schafer Clothier styled a list of Baltimore movers and shakers, as well as CSFB Trustees and supporters who walked the runway. DJs J. Gray and Willie provided the beat and Red Maple generously donated delicious hors d’oeuvres. Flaunt on the Avenue and EmmeY Makeup Artistry styled hair and makeup, and Michael Stavrinos Photography donated all proceeds from photo sales.

CSFB Trustee, Elizabeth Massing hosted the event!

Thanks to our generous sponsors:

The fabulous event raised over $5,000 for CFSB!

At our first annual happy hour event, CSFB trustees served our donors and worked for “tips” and bragging rights to support our cause.

Funds raised at the event were matched by the Venable Foundation, and Ware House 518 donated $1 per drink to CSFB. The event raised over $5,000!

I have four children and they all have attended private school. Three of the four have been Children Scholarship Fund participants. This program has helped me tremendously. The funding allowed me to have all of my kids in private school at the same time. The sibling component of the program was such a blessing. Having this opportunity was very important to us as a family. It allowed everyone to get an excellent education. You were not forced as a parent to choose which child would be able to go to private school based on finances.

Finally, I think their education in the non-public setting has made a difference. My kids are thinkers and believers in themselves. They are not afraid of challenges and are confident in their abilities. They have been in an environment where the teachers and staff genuinely care about them beyond the classroom. My experience with their schools has been that of “we are family” and that has meant the world to me and my family. I never worried about my kids while they were in school. I knew that they were safe and well taken care of.

Thanks to all of you for supporting this important program for Baltimore families.

CSFB SCHOLAR STORY

CSFB ALUMNI JUSTIN ALSTON

Going to private school for most of my life has given me a chance to really be myself. I was able to express myself in ways that I would have never been able to do in a public school. At my schools – Cardinal Sheehan and then the Baltimore School for the Arts – the teachers were always focused on the students’ work and learning and not on behavioral issues. I don’t think I would’ve gotten that at my zoned school.

Also going to private schools has exposed me to a wide range of people with many different backgrounds. I am very grateful for the opportunities that the Children’s Scholarship Fund has given me. I know that the things that I’ve learned in my private school education will carry over as I start college in the fall. I was accepted into 12 schools and will attend the University of Maryland College Park in the fall.

CSFB PARENT VALERIE GRAYS

I choose non-public education for my children because I wanted to give them a strong foundation Pre-K through 8th grade. I think that’s where you have to start if you want to give your children a chance to succeed. Don’t get me wrong, I am a product of the public school system and I believe that a good education should be available to all students both in the public and private sectors. I will continue to be an advocate for such with our legislators but the reality today is that is not what we have.
