As we reflect back on a monumental Centennial year and take the first steps into Hockaday’s second century, we want to thank you for your essential support. As a result, the School is poised to continue its vision and dedication to educating

the girls who will become the world’s future leaders.

Your support allows us to improve our facilities and resources, to attract and hire the most talented faculty, and to provide

an innovative education that prepares our girls to be the visionaries of tomorrow. Because of your investment,

Hockaday students continue to be champions on the field, in the classroom, and in the community.

We are fueling the future now so that our girls are inspired each day to exceed expectations and thrive at Hockaday.

Thank you for your support in advancing the School’s mission to educate girls to become leaders in an ever-changing world.

A MESSAGE FROM KIM WARGOEugene McDermott Headmistress

Dear Hockaday Community, As we begin Hockaday’s second century, it is with the sincerest gratitude that I thank each of you for making Hockaday’s Centennial a resounding success. With your continued commitment and support, the long-term vision for the School that Miss Hockaday established in 1913 continues to be realized, and it will be sustained for generations to come.

This past year, Hockaday celebrated its Centennial, and the support was overwhelming. The Annual Fund and other gifts to current operations exceeded $2 million. Alumnae giving was the highest in School history, with 39 percent of our former students making contributions. Parent participation was 97 percent, with 100 percent participation in nine out of 14 classes. Faculty and staff giving reached an all-time high of 99 percent, up from 95 percent in the previous year.

The Hockaday endowment had a 14.3 percent return and ended the year at nearly $145 million – ranked second in the nation for all-girls schools. Endowment gifts to the Centennial Campaign continued to demonstrate our community’s commitment to the long-term health of Hockaday, with new endowments established, including The Hoak Faculty Professional Development Endowment Fund and The Alaina M. Rodriguez Endowed Financial Aid Fund.

Through the incredible generosity of the Hockaday Community, we opened our new Science Center in August. Phase I of an integrated science-arts Centennial Center, these new facilities include a performance/lecture hall, high-tech classrooms and labs, independent student labs, rooftop green lab and flexible IDEA labs, engineering shop, 16-seat planetarium, and Foucault pendulum and sundolier. With these enhancements, Hockaday will continue to lead in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education, preparing students for the demands of an ever-changing future.

Hockaday continued to live up to its well-established traditions of excellence, and it is because of your support that we have the resources to provide a well-rounded experience for our girls. Here are just a few “fast facts” about the ways our girls are achieving and making an impact:

· The 120 members of the Class of 2014 were admitted to 164 different colleges and universities.

· Nearly 300 students participated in AP classes, with 85 percent scoring either a four or five on their AP tests. · In January, students united on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with Youth Against Hunger volunteers and

provided 24,000 meals to North Texans in need as part of their strong commitment to Hockaday’s community service initiative.

· The Fourcast, Cornerstones, and Vibrato were each awarded a Gold Crown at the Columbia Scholastic

Press Association Conference. Additionally, the National Scholastic Press Association awarded its Pacemaker Award to both www.hockadayfourcast.org and Vibrato to recognize excellence in student journalism.

· Both our lacrosse and tennis teams won their team championships in the Southwest Preparatory Conference. · We graduated 29 National Merit Commended

Students, 21 National Merit Finalists, three National Hispanic Recognition Scholars, and three National Achievement Finalists, representing 47 percent of the Class of 2014.

Each year, Hockaday students’ achievements are made possible by the sustained support and involvement of the Hockaday Community. Hockaday is one of the finest girls schools in the world, and we thank you for making this a reality. Thank you so very much for fueling the future for continued growth of The Hockaday School.

Warm regards,

Kim WargoEugene McDermott Headmistress

Design is an emerging theme in our science curriculum at Hockaday. The drive over the past several years to more tightly integrate our traditions of excellence in the fine arts and the sciences (as embodied in the Centennial Center) is bearing fruit in a curriculum that incorporates aspects of the design process in many of our science offerings. Girls are challenged to think in multiple dimensions, to manipulate the physical world as a means of better understanding it, and to create objects that are both beautiful and serve a functional purpose. Students are given many opportunities to hone skills needed to create the cityscapes of the future.

THE HOCKADAY SCHOOL 2014 – 2015 BOARD OF TRUSTEES

“ On behalf of the entire Board of Trustees, I add our thanks to the Hockaday Community for its unprecedented support of the School in 2013 – 2014. The groundbreaking of the new fine arts center in 2015 is more than a continued affirmation of the power of the arts for girls: it is evidence of our conviction that the arts help form the basis of the fully developed modern mind operating at its fullest powers. Together we will celebrate this capstone – and cornerstone – of Hockaday in the 21st century.”

“ Hockaday is where I was first introduced to creative writing, painting, and theater – all key ingredients in film directing. And more than anything, film directing requires confidence. Hockaday helped me build the confidence needed to step up and take that leadership role on set.”

“I want to be a gardener when I grow up because I love plants and they

make people happy.”

— SIAH PONOTH Class of 2028

The Hockaday science program provides students at all levels the opportunity to interact with the living world. Whether it is our Lower School students working in the discovery garden to better understand the life cycle of plants and ecosystems, our Middle and Upper School biology students doing controlled experiments on plants on the new balcony “Green Lab” of the Centennial Center, or our genetics students doing advanced work on genetically modified organisms, Hockaday’s curriculum provides a wealth of opportunities for students to both gain deep insight into the lives of plants and get their hands in the soil.

Hockaday HPEA (Health, Physical Education, and Athletics program) encourages young girls to accomplish more than they thought possible and to dream above what they see as imaginable. The program offers a diverse and wide range of activities that teach our girls to take risks and experience different things as they strive to attain healthy, active lives.

“When I grow up, I want to be an NFL football player because

people think girls are weak and can’t play football, but I can. I can play football and girls can play football (My football team

won the league!).”

“ Hockaday rewarded and reinforced my curiosity and my tenacity when it came to tough challenges. When I entered engineering as a college freshman, there were very few other women in the classes (and still we are far from gender parity in the field), but I never doubted whether or not I belonged. I give Hockaday a lot of credit for that confidence.”

– Kate Burch Canales ’96, Director of SMU Design and Innovation Program

“When I grow up, I want to be an inventor/engineer because I like

thinking and making things from scratch to help people, and I want to

make the world a better place.”

“ I am so thankful for the amazing education and opportunities that my daughters are receiving and to all that have come before to make this possible. Because of them, I will humbly try to do my part to support Hockaday with my gifts and my service. Not only for my daughters’ generation, but for generations to come.”

WHY DO I GIVE TO THE ANNUAL FUND AT HOCKADAY?

Page 60: 2014 Hockaday Annual Report

60 | Hockaday Trustees60 | Hockaday Trustees59 | About the School

Statement of Philosophy and Purpose of The Hockaday School The Hockaday School, founded in 1913, provides a college preparatory education for girls of strong potential and diverse backgrounds who may be expected to assume positions of responsibility and leadership in a rapidly changing world.

It is the purpose of The Hockaday School to foster a community of concern and friendship and to instill in every girl a love of learning, an understanding of herself and the ethical principles that guide her life, an appreciation of excellence in all its forms, and a commitment to what is right and good.

Through small classes, creative teaching, and an approach that emphasizes the process of learning, Hockaday seeks to discover unique aptitudes and awaken the intellectual curiosity of every girl.

Through a strong physical education program and the challenge of competitive sport, Hockaday seeks to develop in each girl an enthusiastic spirit, a healthy body, and a sense of responsibility for herself and her actions.

Through a continual exposure to the arts, Hockaday seeks to engender an appreciation of beauty and joy in self-expression that will bring added enrichment to each girl’s life.

Through constant emphasis on moral and ethical values, Hockaday seeks to nurture a courteous attitude, a sense of grace, respect for the ideals of human worth and dignity, and a harmonious and mature character well equipped to make responsible choices and withstand the pressures of today’s society.

Guiding Our Work: The Four CornerstonesMiss Ela Hockaday’s founding principles continue to imbue the culture of the School today. The Four Cornerstones are the foundation by which Hockaday students live and learn about the world around them.

Character: the pursuit of a moral and ethical life; it promotes within us a self-assurance and strength to withstand life’s pressures.

Courtesy: the quality equated with dignity and generosity of spirit; it is our outward expression of respect not only for others, but for ourselves.

Scholarship: the search for knowledge that brings a wise understanding of a complex world; it fosters in us a creative, discerning, and resourceful mind.

Athletics: the endeavor to lead a healthy, active, and balanced life; it embraces challenges and inspires us to be modest winners and courageous losers.

Hockaday’s Mission Statement: Believing in the limitless potential of girls, Hockaday develops resilient, confident women who are educated and inspired to lead lives of purpose and impact.
