Lower ScHooL – pre-kinderGarten – Grade 4

• Students may enroll in one, two, or all three sessions.

• Students are escorted by teachers between all classes and to and from the lunchroom.

• An overall summary for each academic class will be given upon the completion of each session.

• Tuition is listed with each program and includes all books and supplies.

• Lunch is included in the Pre-Kindergarten Creative Arts Camp (full-day) and Creative Arts Camp.

• Students enrolled in all other programs may purchase lunches for the sessions in which they are enrolled as listed below. Students may not bring their lunch. Lunch is scheduled from 12:15 – 1:00 p.m.

1. Lunch for any one session (I, II, or III) is $90 for the two-week period. 2. Lunch for any two sessions is $180 for the four-week period. 3. Lunch for any three sessions is $270 for the six-week period.

• Students electing not to purchase lunch will be able to leave campus only during the lunch break with a parent or approved guardian. Upon returning to school, the student must be taken directly to class by the parent or guardian.

• The infirmary is staffed by a registered nurse throughout the summer program.

• Information regarding Extended Day Programs (morning and afternoon) is described on page 16.

SeSSion i: June 10 – June 21iSLand adVenture witH eddie coker!Join all the campers as we take an imaginary trip far away from Dallas to

a magical island. On this island you will experience out-of-this-world

make-believe adventures. Activities will include arts and crafts, learning

about the sea creatures that live around the island, cooking foods that are

tropical and good for you, and a host of other good times. This session

culminates with a performance of island music and fun for your family

and friends.

SeSSion ii: June 24 – JuLy 5mad Summer ScientiStS Calling all Mad Scientists! Join us for exciting experiments, crafts, and

games as we investigate the world around us and beyond. Volcanoes,

bubbles, oceans, wind and weather, spider webs, pet rocks, and rainbows

are just part of what you will explore in this wild and wacky camp. So

get ready to put on your goggles and lab coat as we enter this learning

adventure. This camp also includes water play for Pre-Kindergarten or

swimming for Kindergarten – 4th Grade students.

SeSSion iii: JuLy 8 – JuLy 19wezmore! witH eddie coker!What does Wezmore mean? Come find out as you participate in

a memory making, uplifting, and positive event led by children’s

entertainer extraordinaire, Eddie Coker. The performance in which you

star will include music, dance, art, acting, AND a giant bucket of YES!

Though the performance is the main event, this camp also includes lots

of other activities such as stories, games, arts/crafts, cooking, and water

play or swimming. Eddie will teach you to build the “most hugest ever

best life possible!” This Little Light of Mine has a cousin and it goes by the

name of WEZMORE! This session culminates with a performance for

family and friends.

Creative Arts Camp Themes Come join us for this exciting program designed to ignite each child’s imagination. these camps make learning fun and encourage a positive self-image through arts/crafts, cooking, reading, games, music, swimming, physical fitness activities, and much more.

Offering Half-Day and Full-Day Programs

Our Pre-Kindergarten Creative Arts Camp is for boys and girls who will

be three years old by June 1 and is a great “first” Hockaday experience. In

each session, students will engage in a variety of age-appropriate activities

including arts and crafts, cooking, games, music, library exploration,

water-play, and much more. Students need to bring their own towel

for the water-play activities.

You may choose the half-day morning program from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00

noon OR the full-day program from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Rest time

will be provided during the full-day schedule. Students are served a snack

during the half-day program and lunch during the full-day program.

Readingready, Set, read! GradeS k – 1 Start your engines and get ready to take off to the exciting and world-

expanding realm of reading. In this class you will practice reading skills

and will participate in many fun hands-on activities that will aid in

developing your comprehension and retention skills.

Fancy nancy and FriendS GradeS 1 – 2In this class we’ll have a stupendous time exploring fabulous book

characters with personality and pizzazz, like Fancy Nancy, Eloise,

and Olivia. This class includes glamorous crafts, creative cooking, and

hands-on activities. We’ll wrap up the session with an exuberant gala to

celebrate an extraordinary two weeks.




cookinG witH BookS GradeS 1 – 4 This course combines cooking with your favorite children’s literature

to create fun and delicious treats. Students will incorporate kitchen

science concepts, and practice math and reading skills, while working

cooperatively with others as they prepare recipes that will become a

part of their very own cookbook!




readinG iS For me! GradeS 2 – 3 One, two, three, reading is for me! This is a class for students who can

read and will focus on improving comprehension, fluency, expression,

and voice. Students will learn about different genres of literature, famous

authors, and how to find a book in the library.




maGic tree HouSe Summer adVenture GradeS 2 – 3 Join Jack and Annie as they travel through time in the first four books

of the Magic Tree House series. Our journey will include hands-on

activities, fun crafts, reading comprehension, and more!



compreHenSion myStery GradeS 2 – 3 and 4Calling all detectives! Dust off your spyglass and come search for the

keys to successful reading comprehension. As part of the Take Flight

Comprehension Mystery curriculum, each lesson is highly structured

with hands-on experience for each participant. Students will learn

a combination of techniques including comprehension monitoring,

question generation, story structure, summarizing, and inferencing.

handwriting tips, phonics, beginning reading and writing skills, and

introductory math. A hands-on approach will be used with lots of

movement and game playing. Children should be entering first grade in

the fall to participate.

and reasoning skills. How are you at deciphering codes? Sequencing?

this is the class for your child. Students will practice listening skills,

WritingHandwritinG witHout Fear GradeS k – 1 and 2 – 4Is legible writing a difficult task for your student? If so, this class,

which is based on the Handwriting Without Tears program, will help.

This is a hands-on comprehensive curriculum for handwriting success

in manuscript (Grades K – 1) and cursive (Grades 2 – 4). Handwriting

Without Tears uses engaging multi-sensory techniques and research-

based methods for making handwriting a natural and automatic skill for

students of all ages.

ScientiFic SpeLLinG GradeS 2 – 4“Mom, do I double, drop, or change?” Have you ever wondered why

words are spelled the way they are? This course will cover major spelling

rules and concepts as well as the “whys” of spelling in a sequential

organized format. Students will come away with a better understanding

and mastery of spelling.




uniqueLy you! GradeS 3 – 4 What makes you special? In this course you will write your very own

autobiography recounting your favorite memories, creating a family

tree, researching the world around you, and discovering what makes

you special. Students will use interviews, pictures, computer software,

and their own touch of creativity to create this book they will

treasure forever.



caLLinG aLL newSieS! GradeS 3 – 4 Learn how to create a complete newspaper from scratch. You will

use digital cameras, uploading your photos and enhancing them in

Photoshop Elements, and write articles from your interviews of students

and teachers using Microsoft Word. Then you will complete the final

product by working on the layout, graphics, photos, and fun puzzles and

comics. The class concludes with the distribution (hot off the presses) of

your group newspaper.



science GoinG BuGGy! GradeS 1 – 2Incredible insects live all around us and they are worth getting to know!

Through hands-on activities students in this class will explore the

lives of these friendly neighbors – how they look, what they do, and

their purpose in our world. Have fun while developing your science

knowledge and prepare to go buggy!



rockS to rocketS GradeS 2 – 4Why would you care about a bunch of rocks? What makes a rocket fly?

How does a caterpillar become a butterfly? Students will discover the

wonders of elementary chemistry, geology, and biology through fun

and safe experiments. We will take science out of the lab and into daily

life experiences. Join us for hands-on activities with bubbles, electricity,

kitchen chemistry, and other activities that make science fun!

FLyinG, FLoatinG, & FLippinG Science GradeS 2 – 4POP! SQUISH! SQUASH! Come explore the wonderful world of

bubbles and paper. This class takes students way beyond the typical

thoughts about bubbles and paper and into the realm of creativity, cause

and effect, and outcomes. Students will be challenged in their scientific

and creative thinking skills, as well as producing some outstanding

projects from both bubbles and paper!




kidS cHemiStry GradeS 1 – 2 and 3 – 4 In this course you will learn about chemical safety and discover how

chemical reactions are occurring around us all the time. What happens

when things get hot? When they get cold? By investigating, mixing,

and experimenting, we will learn about molecules, atoms, elements, and

compounds. We will create yummy food, beautiful art, crystals, invisible

ink, rust, and more.







ocean expLorationS GradeS 1 – 4Do you really know who lives in a pineapple under the sea? In this

course, students will learn all about life beneath the sea. Students will

explore sea sponges, starfish, squid, and the truth about many of the

other creatures of Bikini Bottom. Become an expert on the real world

of SpongeBob SquarePants!



enGineerinG adVentureS GradeS 3 – 4Do you like fun, hands-on challenges that encourage you to think

out of the box? Do you think there is more than one way to solve

a problem? If that describes you, then get ready for Engineering

Adventures! This class will allow you to put your engineering skills

to the test with hands-on activities that require problem solving,

teamwork, communication, and creative, flexible thinking to find

solutions to fun engineering problems.

LeGO, Gaming, & RoboticsLeGo moVie creatorS GradeS 3 – 4Have you ever wanted to make your very own feature film? Well now

you can! This class gives students the basics in the movie biz, from set

design to storyboarding, and special effects. Students will produce a series

of movies using the popular stop-motion technique of filmmaking used

in movies like Wallace & Gromit and The Fantastic Mr. Fox. The best part of

this movie-making class is it’s all done with LEGOs!

adventure, mystery, and magic. Recognizing Rowling’s novels as treasure

chests loaded with vividly written sentences structured to use every sense

we possess, students will study and model her use of language in order

to understand better what brings writing to life, and how to use such

constructs to energize their own writing. Beginning with a review of the

parts of speech, and then moving quickly to a study of figurative language

– metaphor, simile, personification, etc. – students will write, edit, and

of this course, the students will receive an AAOS (American Academy

of Orthopedic Surgeons) certification card for adult, child, and infant

Myths and facts of self-defense are examined as well as the behaviors

their emotions during a crisis is critical to mounting an effective

defense. The human response to adrenal stress is covered and students

learn to recognize and manage their own response patterns. Options

of dealing with an armed attacker are examined and put into physical

practice. The final session allows students to respond in a realistic

simulated attack. In addition to developing the knowledge and skills

for self-defense, students will explore the following topics: health-care

consumerism, communication and relationships, behavior modification,

a focus on fun. Campers will select from a gallery of animated characters

called sprites. They will teach them to walk, run, dance, turn around, and

respond to keyboard input. Students will learn to change backgrounds,

add music, play catch, and other cool features. Throughout this course

they will learn basic programming skills while broadening their

imagination and creativity. After the completion of camp, participants can

install the software and story from our custom download site for further

development or to simply show off their skills. Each camper will also

New Camps for 2013adVanced Video creation – moBiLe appS camp intermediate coed, aGeS 9 – 15 Children will use GameMaker StudioTM to create a cell phone/tablet

video game in the style of Doodle Jump that they can play on their

Smartphones, iPads, iPhones, Kindles, and other tablets. Students will be

taught how to create characters, make them move by tilting the phone,

jump between platforms, manipulate objects by touching the screen, and

much more. The students will create different levels, a high score table,

enemies, and learn what they need to know to get games onto devices.



adVanced Video creation – 3d conceptS intermediate, mS windowS coed, aGeS 9 – 15Children with prior experience with GameMaker software learn the

principles used in making 3D style games while creating their own

“home base defense games.” Lessons include the principles of perspective,

scale, infinity, and other concepts. Students are challenged while allowing

them to creatively apply their GameMaker skills and learn how game

designers make the 2D computer screen “come to life” with 3D effects.

Athletics & sports CampsFitneSS Fun & tenniS, too!

FirSt-time StudentS aGeS 5 – 7 This class is designed for young students ready for an introduction to the

game of tennis, but still needing to build on the game’s basic building

blocks of eye-hand coordination, footwork, and increased cardiovascular

levels. Students will develop these basic skills through a variety of team

games, strength building activities, and coordination drills. Students will

learn the basics of the game including backhand and forehand strokes,

terminology, and rules. The focus is FUN!

BeGinnerS aGeS 7 – 10 The primary focus for this group of students is beginning mastery of

the game of tennis. There will be drills on basic strokes, with emphasis

on forehand and backhand. At this level, the serve will be introduced.

Students will also work on cardiovascular and strength drills. The player’s

level will be assessed and he/she will practice with and challenge others

of comparable skill. The focus is FUN AND MASTERY!

Following are times for both First-Time and Beginning Students:




tenniS GradeS 5 – 12 This camp will challenge advanced-beginner to advanced-intermediate

players. The camp includes daily cardiovascular and agility drills and

full-court matches. We will stress a full service motion, overhead, and

volley skills. Students will also learn strategy of singles and doubles play,

and healthy sports psychology will be introduced. After a player’s level

has been assessed, he or she will practice with and challenge others of

comparable skill. The ball machine will be available, and videotaping

will record each student’s progress. In case of rain, there will be activities

pertinent to tennis.

small groups. Instructors will use the guidelines and philosophies of the

American Red Cross. A portion of the class will be devoted to games and

age groups when running. Using recommended USA Track and Field &

USOC protocols, campers learn techniques for female-specific training,

core strength, hydration, nutrition, flexibility, teamwork, and s

General Information admiSSion to tHe Summer SeSSion: Admission is granted to qualified students in the order in which registration forms are received. Our program welcomes students from any school and of any race, religion, and national or ethnic origin.

Registration is on-going until the first day of class. Some classes fill quickly so we encourage you to enroll early. All students, except current Hockaday students, must complete a Parental Authorization and Release Form, which must be returned to Hockaday before a student may attend Summer Session courses or camps.

aGe-appropriate courSe SeLection: Most classes include students from several grade levels. These grade levels are offered as guidelines, not restrictions. We assume you will enroll your child in programs most appropriate for his or her intellectual, emotional, and social development. At the beginning of each program, teachers make careful assessment of each student to ensure appropriate placement.

tuition and FeeS: A non-refundable application fee of $25 and a non-refundable deposit of $75 must accompany a student’s registration. The deposit of $75 will be applied to the student’s total tuition costs.

academic credit: Students should discuss academic credit with their home school before coming to Hockaday since the decision to grant credit rests with that institution. Upon request, we will provide full course descriptions and, at the end of the summer, transcripts. Every effort will be made to help students secure credit for work at Hockaday.

To earn course credit, Hockaday students may not be absent more than three days during a six-week course or one day during a three-week course. This rule is strictly upheld by the faculty. The Hockaday School is accredited by the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest.

canceLLationS and reFundS: Deposits will be refunded ONLY if an offering is canceled by Hockaday; otherwise, they are non-refundable. A 75% refund (less the application fee and non-refundable deposit) will be given for cancellations on or before May 31. After June 1, no refund will be made to any student who withdraws from all or part of the session or is dismissed from the session unless a course is canceled by Hockaday.

ScHeduLe cHanGeS: Students are allowed to change their schedules one time per session at no charge. Any additional schedule changes will

result in a $25 per change fee.

tranSportation: Students should arrive on time and be picked up promptly at the end of classes via the Forest Lane parking lot. Parents are responsible for prompt drop-off and pick-up of students. Student parking is limited to the Forest Lane parking area. Students taking tennis may be dropped off at the Tennis Center at the south end of the campus. (Take Rosie Mae Bell Lane off of Welch Road.)

Kindergarten through Fifth Grade students may enroll in the Extended Day Program if they need to be on campus before and after school. Students in the Early Bird Program should use the Welch Road entrance.

Middle and Upper School students may use the Upper School Library until its closing promptly at 5:30 p.m.

dreSS code: The atmosphere and dress are informal. Tasteful shorts and slacks are the most common style of dress inside and outside of the classroom. We recommend that Lower School students wear closed toe or tennis shoes.

procedure and StandardS oF BeHaVior: The Summer Session at Hockaday is relaxed and informal, but the School assumes that students attend because they are excited about their educational opportunity. It is our expectation that those who are accepted will attend all classes and activities. The standard for behavior is honor. Cooperation with the spirit as well as the letter of the program and consideration for the rights and property of everyone are expected. In addition, the School reserves the right to dismiss any student who consistently neglects his or her work, whose attitude is contrary to the goals and spirit of the Summer Session, or whose conduct is considered harmful to himself/herself or to the School.

It is expected that every student, in joining the Hockaday community, intends to follow the stated procedures and standards of behavior and to strive toward consideration of others in thought and action. As a Hockaday Summer Session student, you are required to follow the School’s rules and uphold appropriate standards of behavior as detailed below:
