3Celebrating ten years of Saddleback

SADDLEBACK 10 YEARS IN THE MAKING2014 is a special year for Saddleback, as it celebrates 10 years of business since the company started back in 2004. This past decade has seen the company grow from being a childhood dream, to an established bicycle distribution business and respected partner to some of the worlds leading performance brands. With plans under way to move to a purpose built 20,000 sq ft distribution facility within the next 12 months, it seems difficult to imagine Saddleback’s humble origin - a small, semi detached house with a box room turned into a makeshift office, and the garage and bedrooms filled with boxes and packaging materials. Mortgaged to the hilt and with money borrowed from anyone who would lend it, the company’s first two employees - Sarah and I - set about starting a business. 10 years on we remain eternally grateful to the dealers who helped us back then, buying products they didn’t need from a supplier who, at the time, wasn’t offering anything but a promise. Thankfully, the determination to succeed overcame the little that was on offer and this passion attracted our two principle and longest standing brands - Felt Bicycles and Castelli - whom we remain especially loyal and connected to.

Without the opportunity they gave us, based on their trust that we could give their brand the focus and commitment they required, things may have worked out very differently. That being said, Saddleback would be nothing without the quality and commitment of its staff and their truly evident love for cycling. The family feel that Sarah has created continues to be the glue that permeates through the business, drawing us together and helping us overcome obstacles and challenges along the way. As we move in to a new era, we are aware of many areas that we want to improve to ensure that we remain true to our original goal of offering the worlds best elite performance products, along with the best possible service. It is with great pleasure that we present to you our 2014 product collection with some truly exceptional products that we are sure will prove to be a highly valuable part of your business in the year ahead. The breathability is added to with a couple of zipped side vents, while the zip’s wide external storm flap is supplemented by large Velcro patches for extra security all the way up to the collar; Velcro-adjustable cuffs help to keep your wrists dry too. A lthough nominally an off-road jacket, Madison’s Flux would make an excellent winter commuting waterproof. Unlike a lot

of the super-lightweight racier tops on test, the Flux has a full range of internal and external pockets and a couple of meshed side vents to back up a surprisingly impressive degree of breathability. We were surprised because it’s quite a weighty top in which we expected to get sweatier than we did. The sizing is slightly on the generous side, which makes for easier layering, and its high, fleece-lined collar will prove a welcome friend on cold, windy, winter days. www.madison.cc ★★★★★

V aude has delivered a simple-as-they-come lightweight jacket with eco-friendly credentials. But while it’s made from at

least 90 per cent organic or recycled materials, Vaude hasn’t skimped on quality. The Ceplex Active material is waterproof and breathable – aided by zipped arm vents – the taped seams are exceptionally neat and it’s well shaped, with silicone hem grippers and asymmetric elasticated cuffs for wrist protection. The large zip pull is one of the best for gloved hands. It could do with more reflective details and there’s only a single napoleon pocket but those are our only quibbles. www.vaude.co.uk ★★★★★

A roomy and quite bulky top that combines a softshell and waterproof in one for a jacket that’ll do the job when it’s cold and

wet. There’s room for layering underneath, but you won’t need much as it’s one of the warmest jackets here. It balances the waterproofing with decent breathability, but there are pit zips and very long side vents to further aid airflow. Your neck and wrists are well protected from the elements, there are plenty of pockets and even a rubberised rear LED loop. from the shop. The whole bike feels significantly more ‘together’ than the previous B12 frame, and it’s stiff enough to cope with properly deep-section rims if you upgrade in future.

Upgrading rolling stock would likely improve handling too, as while the deliberately narrow spoke flange spacing may reduce drag, it definitely allows more sideways flex. The very short front end and narrow base bar can also make the B12 a duck-and-dive

handful if you get too far forward out of the saddle.

Cable routing out of the back of the extensions is likely to knock your knees with an early warning to sit down and settle down before you trip up. Climbing is definitely not the strongest suit of the B12, though. The heaviest frame and wheels on test, plus the heaviest overall weight, are obvious straight away on inclines. While frame, crank and wheel stiffness are adequate to get things moving on the flat, you

can feel the Felt twisting and undermining torque transfer as soon as you’re fighting a significant slope.

It takes its time out of corners too, and this combines with obvious wheel flex on entry to put the B12 at a definite disadvantage on twisty or rolling roads. Then again, Felt’s AR family provides a more versatile aero road option if that’s what you’re after, and the B12 does the long-haul, low-stress, finely fitted job it’s designed to do well.

One of the original tri bike brands and the choice of champions such as mirinda carfrae,

felt is another manufacturer making the most of its moulds. The result is the widest fit range here in a comprehensive ironman-ready complete bike package.

Frame and ForkWhile Felt’s cheaper B16 frame uses an older mould set, every ‘modular monocoque’ section behind the head tube on the B12 is exactly the same shape as the company’s flagship DA family bikes. The UHC Performance grade fibre does mean a 20 per cent weight gain, according to Felt, which explains the highest frame

Felt is one of the few companies making XS sized aero frames. Developed directly with ‘Rinny’ herself, the smallest of the company’s six frame sizes comes with smaller 650c wheels to keep handling and position in proportion.

The kiTFelt matches its stem and crank lengths to frame size, too, which complements the narrow sizing bands for a really accurate fit. The heavy, fat-armed FSA TT cranks never feel as stiff as they look, even with a BB30 axle, but the Shimano Ultegra gear mechs are a good spec at this price. The curious-looking Vision Metron shifters work really well once you’ve got the hang of them too, though ours rattled a lot on rough roads.

You can’t fault the amount of extension adjustment on the Felt bars though, and the pad width and fore aft position is easily changeable, too. You’ll need to trim the excess length down if you’re not going to smash your knees on them out of the saddle, however, and pad angle adjustment is limited. Not everyone appreciated the sticky gel pads either, but we’ve always been big fans of Felt’s Devox base bar with its integrated brake levers and little rubber hoods. The Prologo saddle is much more comfortable than it looks, too. Felt supplies the 30mm-deep wheels and TTR tyres, which give the B12 a drag-reduction edge over the other bikes here.

The rideThe more holistic complete bike feel definitely comes across in the ride, and while we’re used to riding whatever cranks and stem come on a bike, it was nice to have ones that felt just right. The kinked-forward seatpost position is obviously optimised for multi-sport use too, with a generously open pelvis angle that lets you stride – rather than stumble – off

weight on test. Strength and stiffness is the same, though, and you get the same front and rear wheelhugger tube shapes, distinctive forward-hooked aero seatpost, alloy sleeved BB30 bottom bracket and full Di2 compatibility.

The rear facing dropouts get hidden wheel stop screws for accurate tyre clearance, and the rear brake hangs under the BB. Gear and brake cabling is all internal, and the chassis is compatible with the frame-filling triangular TorHans aero bottle supplied with Felt’s DA bikes. You don’t get the leading-edge bayonet fork of the DA bikes though, and while the frame has a stepped sync onto the trailing edge of the fork, the conventional front brake doesn’t have any draft-dodging advantages.

While we haven’t got a wind tunnel to confirm or deny the exact drag data, the B12 feels clean and efficient in most wind conditions. The mid-section aero wheels certainly add speed sustain over slight rises or into gusting headwinds, and the

Verdict Goes fast without beating you up – what more can you ask?

F elt’s Z series bikes might major on comfort, but they’ve got racing credentials too. They share construction and materials with the race-oriented F bikes,

with higher front ends, longer back ends and more sloping top tubes, but the Zs have themselves found their way into the pro peloton if the occasion demands something a little more compliant.

The Z series bikes vary across the range in terms of materials and construction, but share distinctive angular looks. They’re differentiated from the F series by heavily sloped top tubes and a clear difference between the top and bottom halves of the frame. The tapered head-tube, bottom bracket and chainstays all pack plenty of material, while the top-tube and seatstays are

more slender. It’s largely a cosmetic feature, but we do like the integrated fork, with a crease running up the outside of the carbon blades following through into the head-tube. It’s good to see that Felt has made the Z4’s frame ready for an upgrade to Di2 too, with additional cable ports and battery bosses.

It’s almost a full Shimano house on the Felt. Shimano doesn’t have a BB30 chainset, so drive duties are taken up by FSA’s SL-K Light. Shifting across the FSA rings isn’t quite as smooth as Shimano, but the cranks are light and stiff. The other non-Ultegra bit is the cassette, an all-steel Shimano 12-30 rather than Ultegra’s lightweight alloy-spidered unit. The cassette adds a bit of weight, but it’s in the middle of the wheel where it won’t do much harm. A 12-30 spread is a mixed blessing – you get wall-climbing low gears at the expense of some quite big

jumps between gears in the lower half of the cassette.

Geometry is relatively steep with lively handling, and the head-tube is

somewhere in the middle of the length range, successfully hitting the

Goldilocks ‘just right’ size – enough extra height for comfort, not so much that the front end gets vague. Also just right is the balance between

power delivery and comfort. The frame’s high-volume backbone does

something useful with your pedalling efforts; slender seatstays, a skinny carbon post, 25mm tyres and gel bar tape all contribute to an impressively smooth ride on poor surfaces.

OUR HOUSE SHOW (ABOVE) This year saw our house show grow in many ways. This was due to more products being on display, especially with us acquiring new brands-most notably, Stages. The Stages area had a real buzz around it all week from dealers and the media alike and with Doug and Matt on hand to answer any questions and give demonstrations, Stages was a real

hit and success. With more dealers attending than ever before, our demo rides were always full up with us having to add an extra ride on Tuesday. Dealers had the opportunity to ride the new 2014 Felt AR which was loved by everyone. Claud the Butler was again there on hand to supply us with copious amounts of cake, coffee and sandwiches, which were

especially a hit with the returning demo riders! With Jim Felt and Dave Koesel in attendance, the combined knowledge and insight particularly with the new Felt IA, was incredible. With three seminars each day, Jim and Dave unloaded a wealth of knowledge and expertise to our dealers and were on hand to answer any questions throughout the day.

THE 2014 PRODUCT COLLECTION2013 was a great year for Saddleback. The acquisition of some new exciting brands along with increased growth of our team meant it was a very successful year. Most notably was our Dealer House Show, which saw the largest number of dealers visiting us and participating in the demo rides yet. Looking ahead to the rest of 2014, we are even more excited and enthusiastic about what this year holds; new products, new brands and a continued hunger to bring you the best elite performance products available.

At Felt, our mission has never waivered: To design, develop and deliver the best bicycles in the world. The roots of this mission trace back more than two decades. It all started in the late 1980s when motocross star Johnny O’Mara asked his ace motorcycle mechanic Jim Felt to build him a Time Trial bike. Johnny was competing in triathlons as training for motocross. A competitive age-group triathlete himself, Jim had a distinct vision of how he could improve on the designs of the time. He focused on optimizing rider position to maximize aerodynamic efficiency. It worked. Johnny immediately started winning races, and before long Jim was building bikes for many of the world’s top triathletes. When Paula Newby-Fraser won the 1991 Kona Ironman on a Felt, Jim found himself officially in the bicycle business. Ten years after Jim Felt built that first triathlon

bike, it was time to expand. Enter Bill Duehring and Michael MÜllmann. Bill, a bike industry veteran, brought years of product development experience and strong global supplier ties. He had broad-based product development knowledge and vendor connections. Michael owned a successful distribution company in Europe. He had extensive experience in distribution and marketing. Jim brought his respected name, design experience and athlete relationships. It was the perfect melding of skills. Felt now had more than 70 years of combined experience in developing, manufacturing and distributing high-quality bicycles. “We didn’t want to be the biggest bike company in the world, just the best,” was the trio’s shared vision. Together Jim, Bill and Michael developed a singular goal: to build a bicycle brand dedicated to technological innovation and unmatched quality.

ZSERIESFelt Z frames use a slightly taller head tube for greater flexibility in stem and bar position, as well as overall rider compartment. They feature sloping top tubes for increased stand over clearance, and benefit from improved vertical compliance from an enhanced cockpit layout. The Felt Z uses a slightly longer wheelbase for confident handling at any speed. Design goals of the Z were simple: make a race ready

bike without limiting rider position or all-day capability. Verdict Goes fast without beating you up – what more can you ask?

F elt’s Z series bikes might major on comfort, but they’ve got racing credentials too. They share construction and materials with the race-oriented F bikes,

with higher front ends, longer back ends and more sloping top tubes, but the Zs have themselves found their way into the pro peloton if the occasion demands something a little more compliant.

The Z series bikes vary across the range in terms of materials and construction, but share distinctive angular looks. They’re differentiated from the F series by heavily sloped top tubes and a clear difference between the top and bottom halves of the frame. The tapered head-tube, bottom bracket and chainstays all pack plenty of material, while the top-tube and seatstays are

more slender. It’s largely a cosmetic feature, but we do like the integrated fork, with a crease running up the outside of the carbon blades following through into the head-tube. It’s good to see that Felt has made the Z4’s frame ready for an upgrade to Di2 too, with additional cable ports and battery bosses.

It’s almost a full Shimano house on the Felt. Shimano doesn’t have a BB30 chainset, so drive duties are taken up by FSA’s SL-K Light. Shifting across the FSA rings isn’t quite as smooth as Shimano, but the cranks are light and stiff. The other non-Ultegra bit is the cassette, an all-steel Shimano 12-30 rather than Ultegra’s lightweight alloy-spidered unit. The cassette adds a bit of weight, but it’s in the middle of the wheel where it won’t do much harm. A 12-30 spread is a mixed blessing – you get wall-climbing low gears at the expense of some quite big

jumps between gears in the lower half of the cassette.

Geometry is relatively steep with lively handling, and the head-tube is

somewhere in the middle of the length range, successfully hitting the

Goldilocks ‘just right’ size – enough extra height for comfort, not so much that the front end gets vague. Also just right is the balance between

power delivery and comfort. The frame’s high-volume backbone does

something useful with your pedalling efforts; slender seatstays, a skinny carbon post, 25mm tyres and gel bar tape all contribute to an impressively smooth ride on poor surfaces.

The parentage from Felt’s performance bikes is distinct. Dynaforming processes and tapered style head tubes are used as well as heat treatment to achieve a resilient, stiff and lightweight frame. Internal cable routing contributes to a clean look. Although the frame can bear up against all adversities, its appearance is elegant. Compared to normal MTBs, the position on the QX is more upright, which

Geometrically speaking, our engineers put high importance on direct power transfer, agile steering behaviour and perfect control at all speed levels. The 3D-forged QX dropouts perfectly fit the established KSA40 standard kickstand. Threaded inserts for locks, fenders, racks and bottle holders are standard equipment. Urban areas, light trails, dusty roads – wherever you ride your QX, the frame is suitable for it. Such universal use requires high quality not only concerning the frame. All components must meet the specific demands and withstand several conditions as well. Where we weren’t able to find the right equipment, our engineers had

to develop it. For example, the handlebar with the special shape and dimensions, the grips and the sportive but also comfortable saddle were designed inhouse by Felt. Some QX bikers prefer riding in or near urban areas. Others love the “kick” of small offroad rides. SPEEDThe Smart ENVE System is the first aero wheelset to optimize the interface between frame and wheels, creating an integrated system. The front and rear wheels interact differently with the air and the rest of the bicycle. Rim shapes are optimized to allow airflow to stay attached at higher yaw angles, thus reducing drag and improving ride performance.

• The front wheel is wider and shallower to improve stability and reduce draging any wind condition. • The rear wheel is deeper to reduce drag where stability is less affected.• Wheels were tested on multiple frame designs in order to produce the maximum drag reduction. STABILITYSteering feedback in variable conditions needs to be predictable to have total handling confidence. Less predictable wheels have a non-linear steering response, resulting in erratic and unpredictable handling in unsteady conditions. R45 RACING HUBSLightThe R45 hubset is 20% lighter than our Classic hubset. We designed sleek new hubshell bodies and new 17 mm axles. That’s 17 mm from dropout to dropout resisting deflection during cornering or when the power is full on. We designed a driveshell with a twin bearing design that responsibly removed as much weight as we could from the inner components. Even our patented RingDrive™ engagement system was redeveloped resulting in a quiet, fast-engaging 45-tooth stainless steel system unique to the R45 rear hub.

FastWe designed and built a bearing specifically for the R45 hubset. As with every King bearing, these stainless steel sealed bearings are made in-house in Portland, Oregon and individually hand-checked for precision and smoothness. Our proprietary bearing design allows us to place more rolling elements per bearing meaning greater durability and precision. R45 bearings also feature lightweight, low-friction seals for fast rolling and can be easily serviced at regular intervals using only a single 2.5 mm hex wrench and penknife.

Lock RingsThe R45 for Campagnolo comes standard with an 11-tooth lock ring which is required for use with our driveshell. An optional 12-tooth lock ring is also available.

Ceramic Bearings - Made in-houseWe make our own ceramic bearings and we build them to the same exacting standards as our classic, time-tested stainless steel ball model. Pairing the corrosion resistance of ceramic balls with our proven sealing system allows for greater flexibility with greasing options. We build our ceramic bearing R45 hubs with a very small amount of silicone-based lube for a system with very low drag. Take advantage of our user-serviceable bearings and run minimal lubrication for the ultimate in race-day performance.

ISO DISC HUBSMonths of design and testing went into our ISO disc hubset. During the development process, we adapted our machines to use larger bar stock when we make the hub shells. This manufacturing improvement allowed us to increase the spoke flange diameter significantly. A larger spoke flange spreads the spoke holes away from each other. Also, you can use shorter spokes to build a more durable, stiffer and stronger wheel.

Make no mistake, these are not “disposable” parts. There are a lot of super light hubs out there, but will they still be working in 2 years? How about 5? If you ride a lot, 5 years is a lot of panic stops, high speed feathering and braking bumps. Like all of our other hubs, these carry a 5 year warranty. It is easy to make a really light hub, not so easy to make one that you can sell with confidence and back that up for 5 full years. Who else does this but King?

Arundel Bicycle Company was formed in 2000 after returning from a trip to the Milan bike show. Although the Italian show had a great selection of very cool bikes and parts, we left Milan with the idea that we should design and make our own stuff rather than buying and selling someone else’s stuff. Our first product, the Dave-O carbon cage, was drawn on paper while on the air flight back to Texas. It was David’s idea, so against his wishes we named it the Dave-O (his nickname). The first 500 were made by Dave-O personally here in Fort Worth, in our buddy’s carbon plant. He let us loose in his shop, working along side the parts for the Space Shuttle and the Joint Strike Fighter.

Of these first 500, we lost money on every one. Dave-O joked that each one was “like a little black snowflake; perfect yet different”. By then it had occurred to us that we weren’t so good at manufacturing and needed help. Through an old industry friend, Mark Hubble, we were introduced to a Taiwanese guy named Race and one of his engineers, Beer. We hired them on the spot. How could you not hire Race and Beer? FYI, the cages are made in China near Hong Kong.

The goal of the Arundel Bike Company (as grandiose as it is…) is simple: come up with some cool bike equipment that people want to buy.

The first time we completely changed the world of race clothing was in 1978, when Maurizio Castelli brought Lycra® shorts to the pro peloton. The model was called the Aero Short, and it was available only in black and only in one size! Pros used to actually buy the shorts because they offered such an improvement in performance.

Castelli presented its first aero jersey in 1981. It was pretty revolutionary at the time, using stretch nylon fabrics to provide fit that was impossible to achieve with the wool fabrics of the day.

Then in 2006 Zipp came out with golf ball dimples on its 404 wheels, claiming they provided a 4-watt advantage. That got us thinking and working on boundary-layer aerodynamics in cycling clothing, varying surface textures to control how air flows over the body.

In 2007, we made up the first Split Second jersey after numerous prototypes and consulting with three different engineers. The results were astounding: 18 watts saved at 40 km/h. But moisture management was poor, the back was too stretchy to support the pockets, and the fabric was hot and couldn’t be printed with logos for pro teams. We kept working.

WE THINK EVERYTHING WE DO CAN BE IMPROVED. THAT’S OUR MOTIVATION AND INSPIRATION. OUR SINGULAR GOAL IS TO IMPROVE RACE CLOTHING.

2014 AERO RACE 5.0 JERSEY

We brought the first Aero Race jersey to team Saunier Duval in 2007. At first it was hard convincing riders of the advantages of an aero jersey, but when Cervélo TestTeam burst on the scene in 2009, especially when the entire team made the front echelon and won the first stage in the Tour of Qatar, people started taking notice. Here’s a product that wins races.

We continued to evolve every detail over the years, making the jersey more comfortable, more functional and more aero, but widespread adoption of the aero design meant our margin of advantage narrowed.

In 2013, with Team Garmin-Sharp, we improved the functionality by giving it a long zip and better moisture management with the same aerodynamics.

But the 2014 Aero 5.0 Race Jersey is truly something special. We’ve completely re-engineered every detail, starting with CFD modeling of the rider and surface textures, followed by iterative rounds of samples, then days of wind tunnel and road testing, followed by testing in the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France.

This product represents the biggest marginal aerodynamic gains we’ve ever seen, in one of the lightest jerseys we’ve ever made. The rules of the game have changed.

DON’T LET THE HEAT GET YOU DOWNThis short was created in 2012 based on Team Garmin-Sharp’s request for a short for the blazing heat of Italy in May and France in July. We examined the specific function of each part of the short and used seven different fabrics to make a short that is as cool as possible yet up to the task of performing for the most demanding riders on seven-hour mountain stages.

The short fabrics are all white-based fabrics with sublimation printing on top. We’ve incorporated titanium dioxide, the active ingredient in sunscreen, directly into the fabrics so that they reflect the sun’s rays. Each part of the short features fabric that we feel is as open as possible while still providing some sun protection where necessary and avoiding transparency on the front and back.

But this short is not just about staying cool. We’ve kept an abrasion-resistant ballistic nylon fabric on the inner leg but knitted it with wicking polyester on the inside to keep you dry. The leg ending is our renowned and often copied (though never equaled) GIRO3 elastic, and our Progetto X2

AIR seat pad is used with its ventilated skin-care layer to keep you cool.

UPDATE ON A CLASSICThe Vizio short has been a favorite for a number of seasons, so we kept everything you loved about it and gave it a small upgrade. The mere thought of an Ironman is enough to make most people shake their heads. It takes years of dedication and sacrifice, a good dose of natural ability, and a bit of craziness. When you've done everything to get ready for that race, this is your racewear. Body Paint technology reduces seams to an absolute minimum, making it ideal for long-distance racing.

The near total lack of seams makes for a very aerodynamic product that consistently gives the lowest drag results in our wind tunnel testing of both Castelli and competing products. Go ahead and take a few minutes off your expected bike split.

Long before you get to the run, you'll appreciate the insane comfort provided by Body Paint. The reduced seams and integrated components like the leg gripper mean there's nothing to chafe. We've obsessed over every detail to eliminate anything that might get in the way on race day.

Like your Ironman preparation, the secret is in the details, such as the high UV protection of our Velocity fabric, which is white on the back to reflect more heat. We have a complete custom team department that we call Servizio Corse. That roughly translates into “racing service” in Italian, but it’s really more like our division that’s dedicated to racing teams and especially to bringing home results.
