Why would y’all want to attend the 2014 SCABB Annual Meeting and Exhibit Show? Well, I will tell you why! The meeting will be held in the beautiful historic downtown Fort Worth Hilton Hotel. On November 21, 1963 President and Mrs. John F. Kennedy stayed at this hotel, which was then The Hotel Texas. The next morning President Kennedy gave, what would be his last address, just hours before his assassination in Dallas. President Kennedy spoke to

the many people gathered outside the hotel that morning by saying, “There are no faint hearts in Fort Worth.” It will be an honor to have our annual meeting in this historic place where blood bank professionals, of no faint heart in our challenging times, will gather to learn, network and yes, have a good ol time! “Texas with a Twist” is this year’s theme and I am confident you will see that twist throughout the meeting. Fort Worth is the 16th largest city in the country, so it is an easy travel destination. You can get there by plane, train, automobile or horse if you are so inclined. It is a city that embraces its Western tradition, but has a cosmopolitan side that gives it that twist. Within a very short walking distance of the hotel, there are many restaurants from fine dining to burgers, along with shopping and a vibrant night life! But don’t stay out too late or you will miss the great educational sessions planned for you by your amazing committee members. The educational tracks offer a wide variety of topics that will interest those from every aspect of the hospital blood bank and blood center. There will be topics for everyone including CEOs, technologists, physicians, nurses, phlebotomists, and recruiters. Be sure to also check out the industry workshops for those unique and special educational sessions. If your focus is IRL, we have that too with the amazing AIMS meeting immediately before SCABB. Sensational evening events have been planned so you can learn and share with your old friends and new friends in a less formal environment. Be sure to attend the welcome membership mixer and the closing bash, which is a new fun event for our meeting. The awards banquet will inspire you as we honor those outstanding individuals and groups that make our industry shine, and there will be dancing! In addition, there will be much fun and lots of trash talking at the Ed Moore memorial golf tournament supporting the SCABB Foundation. Last, but certainly not least, is the incredible Exhibit Show where you can see the latest and greatest in new technology and support. We very much appreciate the support of our vendor partners. They are there to support your success, so stop by and learn what they have to offer. The goal of the SCABB Board of Directors and Committee Chairs is to make these few days invaluable to your role in the challenging environment in which we now operate. We hope you will discover new ideas and new friends that can help you make better decisions as a blood bank professional. 2013 Karen Williams Memorial Lecturer2013 Karen Williams Memorial Lecturer2013 Karen Williams Memorial Lecturer Endowed by Chiron, A Novartis Business Evan Bloch, MD Blood Systems Research Institute Dr. Bloch is a native of South Africa and is currently an assistant clinical investigator with Blood Systems Research Institute and an adjunct clinical instructor at the Department of Laboratory medicine UCSF. Dr. Bloch has been very

involved recently, in training in the safe clinical use of blood products in his home country; below is an excerpt from his CV: “The majority of my teaching has been through both the drafting of content for and leading of international training workshops in transfusion medicine for clinicians and allied blood bank/laboratory personnel in Africa. Through collaboration with Safe Blood for Africa Foundation (SBFA), I co-lead two training workshops (Manzini, Swaziland and Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo) on the clinical use of blood. These educational seminars, intended for clinicians and allied health professionals, comprise a series of interactive lectures and facilitated case discussions on core topics in transfusion medicine e.g. transfusion reactions, component use, approach to anemia etc. The content has been adapted to the local environment in view of resource limitations. More recently, I have assisted in teaching courses on manuscript-writing and Training in Clinical Research; both courses were attended by representatives of the regional transfusion services in Africa”

John Judd is an Emeritus Professor of Immunohematology in the Department of Pathology at the University of Michigan. He served on the AABB Board of Directors and numerous AABB committees. Professor Judd is the Past President of the Michigan Association of Blood Banks. He is the author of over 100 publications, including Judd's Methods in Immunohematology, ed 3. John will present at the Advanced Immunohematology & Molecular Symposium.

The Annual Meeting Call for Abstracts is presented by South Central Association of Blood Banks and is open to South Central members and non-members. Abstracts may be from any discipline relating to hospitals, donor centers, cellular therapy, tissue therapy or testing laboratories. Abstracts should be submitted by December 31, 2013 and instructions for submission may be found at www.scabb.org > Annual Meeting > Oral & Poster Abstracts. Anyone interested in submitting an abstract under the guidance of a mentor is encouraged to contact Cheri Jennings, co-chair of South Central’s valuable Protégé Mentorship Program at cjenning@giveblood.org.

2014 Fun Run2014 Fun Run2014 Fun Run Putting a twist on the usual Fun Run course, this year’s run will utilize the beauty of the Trinity Trails. The Trinity Trails are a system of trails along or near the Trinity River in Fort Worth, Texas. Bring your running shoes and be ready for a few “twists”. There are over 40 miles of trails along the Trinity River and its tributaries allowing for a variety of outdoor activities. Enjoy walking, running, cycling, 17 trailheads for picnics and rest stops, five boat launches for canoes, kayaks and sculls, equestrian trails for horseback riding, a water-ski slalom course and fishing in a number of spots. The trail networks connect with 21 parks, the Fort Worth Botanic Garden and Japanese Garden, Log Cabin Village, Fort Worth Zoo, the historic Stockyards and downtown Fort Worth.

The historic Santa Fe Depot (now The Ashton Depot) is the perfect setting to honor those past and present who are true leaders in our industry. The depot, originally opened on March 1, 1899 in response to a growing demand for railroad service in Fort Worth. It has both witnessed and contributed to over a cen-tury of Texas memories. In 1938, the depot was renovated and modernized as part of an extensive program undertaken by the Fort Worth Union Passenger Station and the Santa Fe Railroad. Today, the neoclassical Beaux Arts-Style terminal has been restored to its original beauty and distinctiveness. The original stained glass windows, barrel-vaulted ceilings, and marble floors are stunning, emanating an atmosphere of effortless style and grace and celebration! "Volunteer Donor" Dan Waxman, MD In the last 20 years, we have learned the range of donors that can be safely recruited and collected. From limiting medication lists to actively

recruiting high school donors and individuals with hemochromatosis, our donor pool has expanded at the same time our main group of donors are aging. This talk will explore the journey we have taken and takes a peek into what we might expect in the future.
