Chuck Cusick presented at our club last week and shared with us that the goal of Rotary is to eradicate polio by the endof 2018. It will be a challenge, based on all the conflict we’reseeing in the world today, and it will not come without asteep cost: roughly $5.5 billion. The good news is that of thethree types of polio we have seen historically, only one strainremains; and in India, long thought to be incurable, polio hasnot been seen in more than three years.

Chuck explained that the use of the inactivated polio vaccineor IPV, will be critical in helping us to achieve our goal oftotal elimination. One dose of the IPV will enable the oral vaccine to work more effectively.

Chuck shared with us the number of cases from 2012 when223 instances, primarily in Afghanistan, Pakistan andNigeria, were present. That number has dropped to about 23now with none reported in Nigeria in the past year. Chuckreminded us that Bill and Melinda Gates are providing adouble match to our contributions. His challenge resulted inour club collecting more than $1,000 from 19 Rotarians on behalf of the Rotary Foundation’s Polio Plus campaign.Donations will be logged and thank you letters sent as soonas possible for tax purposes. Next week, forms will beavailable to include credit card information. Thank you to all who donated to the Rotary Foundation this week!

Thank you Chuck and thank you Midland Noon Rotary!

Chuck Cusick on PolioPlus Peace Report from JeanneSchaller

E-mail from Jeanne: “The Chiang Khong ConservationGroup is working hard to see that the Mekong River that

flows between Laos and Thailand continues to remain asan environment where fishing can remain as the localpeople’s livelihood. It’s very much a local-villages effortand together the people’s movement was significant instopping efforts of China to continue to blast within theriver so that huge cargo ships can travel southward. Thelocals know that if fish habitat continues to be destroyed, their lives will be drastically affected in many ways. It was interesting to hear 4 of the locals speak about thiseffort that is slowly growing as the villagers areeducating themselves more about this issue and thenspeaking out nonviolently. They are now able to connectdirectly with the government and because they had doneso much work and presented it so well, the governmentstopped its support for China’s blasting.”

“These quilts were received gladly by this public schooland by one of the teachers. They will be given to thekindergarten students to ones that are low income. Thequilt with the clown is the one Chloe and I tied. Willsend along some more later.”

 RI News Release, 29-Jun-2015

Islamabad (27 June, 2015) — Rotary's internationalleaders in the global fight to eradicate polio are inPakistan this week to recognize the country'scontinued commitment and progress toward endingthe paralyzing but vaccine-preventable disease.Rotary Foundation Trustee Vice-Chair MikeMcGovern who also serves as chair of Rotary'sInternational PolioPlus Committee and PolioPlusDirector Dr. Carol Pandak are meeting Rotarymembers and high-level government officials duringtheir visit.

Pakistan – one of only three countries where poliohas never been stopped – accounted for nearly 90%

of the world's polio cases last year. As a result ofcontinued measures to reach all children with thepolio vaccine, and with the support of Rotary'sNational PolioPlus Committee in Pakistan – spearheaded by chair Aziz Memon – polio cases aredown nearly 70% this year compared to the sameperiod in 2014.

"We are honored to visit this beautiful country andrally support in ending polio," said McGovern. "WhilePakistan continues to face obstacles in its journey topolio eradication, we are excited about the currentprogress being made. Leadership at all levels ofgovernment and society is critical to achieving a

polio-free Pakistan."

Rotary launched its polio immunizationprogram PolioPlus in 1985, and in 1988 became aspearheading partner in the Global Polio Eradication

Initiative with the World Health Organization,UNICEF, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Controland Prevention. Since the initiative launched in 1988,polio cases have decreased by 99.9 percent, fromabout 350,000 cases a year to less than 400confirmed in 2014.

Rotary's roles within the initiative are fundraising, advocacy, and social mobilization. To date, Rotary

has contributed more than PKR142 billion (US$1.4 billion) to ending polio, including more than PKR10.7 billion (US$107 million) in grants to support polioeradication activities in Pakistan and countless volunteer hours by members of Pakistan's 173 Rotaryclubs.

Along with on-the-ground support, the governmentof Pakistan has invested PKR$5.9 billion (US$57.9million) in its own polio eradication activities since2003.
