Recess? Yes.From the beginning, recess seemed to be a good idea. Fresh

air and sunshine. Channeling youthful energy. Giving teachers (sometimes) a chance to catch their breath. What’s not to love?

As it turns out, recess does even more. Research shows that while kids are on the playground, they’re building physical, emotional and social skills. Daily recess is linked to academic achievement and cognitive skills including concentration, memory and self–esteem.

So let the recess bells ring. And let the kids out to play.Together, we can keep unstructured play alive and well: by

building spaces that cultivate play. Sustaining it for generations. And sharing what makes great play—and why it matters.

Recess Rediscovered

Reading, writing, ‘rithmetic … and, back by popular demand, recess.

Page 5: 2015 Playworld Idea Book - Schools

To the casual observer, recess may seem to be an optional “nice–to–have” in the school day. But educators have long understood—and research is now confirming—the important whole–child development taking place while kids enjoy the self–directed play of recess.

The Great Recess Reduction started in the 1980s, when schools began trimming time from recess to devote to academic preparation. The trend continued, spurred even more by No Child Left Behind in 2001.

The recess reductions, however, didn’t help test scores. And, in recent years, a growing body of research reveals that better educational outcomes aren’t a simple matter of increasing classroom time. In fact, studies show that recess generates a rich spectrum of benefits.

Physical Regular recess helps kids enjoy physical activity. Daily recess builds strength, coordination, cardiovascular and fitness while moderating childhood obesity. And kids who get physical activity at school are more likely to be physically active at home.

Academic / CognitivePeriodic recess breaks improve academic achievement, and attempts to improve academic outcomes by eliminating recess may actually have the opposite effect. Active, hands–on play at recess promotes development of intellectual constructs, cognitive understanding, problem solving skills and leadership qualities.

SocialRecess provides opportunities to practice cooperation, negotiation and sharing. While playing with peers at recess, kids learn respect for rules, self–discipline, problem solving and conflict resolution skills.

Emotional Recess has been found to build self–determination, self–esteem and self–regulation—skills critical to managing stress at school. It’s also time when nurturing friendships are formed, helping to promote positive school associations.

Creative The child–initiated pretend play that happens during recess engages children in considering multiple perspectives, playfully maniputating ideas and emotions, enhancing cognitive integration, and expanding divergent thinking skills.

Play unites us all.

Our new Unity™ collection draws from the past to propel school playgrounds forward.

On school playgrounds, certain structures are timeless. The slide. The climbing dome. The monkey bars. Our parents and our grandparents loved them. So why fix something that’s not broken?

Kids today are growing up in a much different environment, with different options, needs, and expectations. So, while the “old school” play structures still work, we’ve enhanced play value by adding new relevance and engagement.

We opened up sight lines—to promote eye contact, interaction, socialization and more effective monitoring. We also opened up options—offering multiple

paths in, on and around the equipment. Going from linear flow to open flow means simultaneous play for more kids—and less waiting in line.

Multiple play paths also invite more creative play. There’s no one “right way” to play on Unity designs. That encourages creative problem solving, imagination, and collaboration. Not to mention increased play engagement and plenty of exercise.

That’s the essence of Unity. Connecting long-standing play forms with state–of–the art design and play influences. Connecting kids with their own abilities, and with each other. And connecting schools with great play.

For Augusta Evans School in Mobile, Alabama, the new school building was a welcome update. But with limited budget, the project did not include a playground. Teachers and administrators knew they had to fill the gap.

Augusta Evans School is specialized—serving only kids with cognitive and physical disabilities. Children with special needs are more prone to obesity and diabetes. And children with ADHD and/or autism need outlets for excess energy. The benefits of play were not optional here.

So fundraising began. Volunteers hosted golf outings, sold bricks, and reconditioned Mardi Gras beads for resale. Principal Allen Baggett launched a speaking tour of local organizations, barbecues, biker clubs, anywhere people were standing still. And people responded, including a major donation from the Rotary Club of Mobile.

Page 21: 2015 Playworld Idea Book - Schools

Then came the next challenge: finding the right partner to build a playground for kids with special needs.

Principal Baggett reseached all the options, locally, regionally, nationally. He talked to lots of people. Then he chose Playworld. “I needed someone who specialized in play,” he says. “This playground needed to be great.”

Baggett worked with Warren Schlender, Playworld rep at Southern Playgrounds of Marietta, Georgia. “Warren came to see the school and meet the kids,” Bagget says. “He got a sense for what we needed, and gave us ideas, options and a plan.”

The result is lots of fun and exercise for the kids, and lots of specialized features to accommodate diverse abilities. In fact, the playground is A–rated for inclusivity, thanks to a full range of activities, challenge levels, cozy spaces (for sensory relief),

transfer stations and wheelchair access.Principal Baggett highlights other features, too,

including the surface material. “A lot of our kids have challenges with getting around. Between that and potential falls, I like knowing our kids are safe.”

The NEOS® 360°—an electronic challenge game with lights and touch pads—is a center of attention, prompting lots of friendly competition. “It wears them out,” Baggett says. “It wears me out!”

The playground gets rave reviews from students and teachers alike. It’s helped everyone make the emotional transition to the new school, and it helps the kids focus in class—so they can get back outside for more recess.

It took a lot of hard work to bring the power of play to the Augusta Evans kids. But considering the physical, emotional and social benefits, we’d say it was well worth the effort.

The FinlandFactorWhat do we make of Finland’s educational success?

24

Page 27: 2015 Playworld Idea Book - Schools

As an educator, there’s a good chance you’ve encountered the Finland question. Maybe you’ve had spirited debates about it. Maybe you’re sick of hearing about it.

There are infinite ways to interpret the data and connect the dots. Some things, though, are clear: since overhauling their highly structured educational system some forty years ago, Finnish students now spend on average 300 fewer hours in the classroom per year compared to U.S. students. They have more recess. In fact, Finnish students typically spend 15 minutes at recess for every 45 minutes in the classroom.

Yet they outperform the U.S. (and most other countries) academically.

The Finns understand how play can power education. It shows in the test scores. Also in the research. Studies confirm that regular recess breaks improve classroom focus and performance.

It’s time to reevaluate our school systems, our playgrounds, and our attitude toward unstructured play and recess.

Ranking near the top of the Programme for International Student Assessment* (PISA) for a decade, Finland has come to mean different things to different people. Depending on your point of view, Finland could be:

C. An inspiring success story & potential source of insights

D. Evidence that saunas make people smarter

A. The gold standard by which all other schools should be measured

B. An apples to oranges comparison to the U.S.

*A standardized test given to 15-year-olds across 65 countries.

Taking Play Personally

I have fond memories of play. Everyone does. For me, it resonates with the memory of coming home from school, putting on old jeans, and taking off on my bike to discover new adventures. I’ve never outgrown the thrill and awe of the power of play.

A number of experts, educators, and families agree—unstructured outdoor play helps kids grow physically, emotionally, socially and cognitively. The benefits last a lifetime.

The research affirms our commitment to creating great play. It’s a commitment shared by three generations of my family, and all of us at Playworld. That’s our difference. Unlike investment driven companies, we’re family owned and operated. It gives us the freedom to determine our own mission. And it’s simple: create meaningful unstructured play opportunities for today’s children.

From our fabricators and designers in Pennsylvania throughout our worldwide network of distributors, the entire team understands our mission. We’re not just making playground equipment. We’re in the kid–empowering, confidence–building, friendship–making, health–promoting, community-strengthening business.

For more than forty years, we’ve collaborated with people

like you to create great play opportunities. We consider it a privilege, and a responsibility. Thanks for your interest in Playworld, and for all you do to promote play!

Playfully,

Matthew M. Miller CEO / Husband / Father / SonPlayworld Systems, Inc.

The playground is the last sacred space where kids can play and parents can feel comfortable. We’ve got to give them the opportunity to discover their childhood on their own terms.
