Outside, where it really happens.Working in Parks and Recreation, you understand the value of

time spent in nature—walking, running, climbing, jumping, or just being. You know that outdoor quality time is losing ground with kids. There’s more competition than ever for their time—from school, sports, and technology. Video games release new versions all the time. When’s the last time someone updated outdoor play?

We want to make sure we always have a good answer for that. Actually, a great answer for that. Playworld is committed to working with Parks & Recreation professionals to create great outdoor play experiences. From concept to play testing to site design, your input plays a critical role in what we do—and it shows. So get in touch, get involved, and let’s make great play.

Together, we can keep unstructured play alive and well: by building spaces that cultivate play. Sustaining it for generations. And sharing what makes great play—and why it matters.

The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) put it well: The nature of childhood has changed—there’s not much nature in it.

So they joined a movement. And it’s growing. 10 Million Kids Outdoors is the name, and the goal, of this ambitious initiative. It’s getting kids out—out of the glow of TV, computer games and Grumpy Cat videos. Out of their indoor habitat. And into the habit of enjoying the outdoors.

State by state, park by park, kid by kid, this effort is reconnecting young people with nature and outdoor play, along with all its benefits—physical, social and emotional. It’s not about pushing them out the door. It’s about pulling them outside—with meaningful outdoor experiences.

10 Million Kids Outdoors was created to:• Improve health and wellness• Provide quality parks and recreation experiences• Foster environmental stewardship and

appreciation of nature• Raise awareness of the value of structured and

unstructured play• Ensure safe, affordable and accessible park and

recreation opportunities• Position parks, recreation and environmental

conservation as essential to every communityIs your community involved? It’s time to get kids outside and time for Parks & Recreation to show the way. For more on 10 Million Kids Outdoors, visit www.nrpa.org/10MillionKidsOutdoors

Little River Big AchievementLittle River Park Moore, Oklahoma

When the mile-wide EF5 tornado plowed through Moore, Oklahoma in 2013, it flattened virtually everything in its path.Except for the spirit of Moore.

4

Page 7: 2015 Playworld Idea Book - Parks

Mayor Glenn Lewis put it this way: “In our great challenges we find opportunities for renewal.”

And so they did, starting with the playground at Little River Park. The place was flattened. Thousands of trees gone, ripped away along with everything else by the tornado. But the playground would be one of the first symbols of Moore’s resolve to rebuild.

“We needed to replace the playground,” says Todd Jenson, Parks Director, “but we wanted to build it better than before.” They decided on a pirate theme, to tie in with the park’s three lakes. But

building better wouldn’t be easy. After such a huge tornado, virtually all of Moore had to be rebuilt. Budget would be tight.

Working with his Playworld representative at The PlayWell Group, Inc., Jenson organized a community build. Groups from all over Oklahoma and Texas pitched in on the playground: church groups, students, contractors, the City of Moore Fire Department, Park and Recreation employees and other volunteers. Raising Cain’s Chicken and Chick–Fil–A provided food and drinks, and local DJ groups came in to provide entertainment.

Having brought the Moore community together to rebuild, the new playground at Little River Park serves as a symbol of recovery, of getting back to life as usual. “For a while after the storm, people weren’t coming out,” Jenson says. “The playground is really bringing people back to the park.”

On May 20th, 2013, nearly 1,150 homes were destroyed and $2 billion

in damages were caused by the EF5 tornado in Moore, Oklahoma.

Local Playworld representative for the community, The PlayWell Group, Inc., helped rebuild the playground and bring people together.

Taking Play Personally

I have fond memories of play. Everyone does. For me, it resonates with the memory of coming home from school, putting on old jeans, and taking off on my bike to discover new adventures. I’ve never outgrown the thrill and awe of the power of play.

A number of experts, educators, and families agree—unstructured outdoor play helps kids grow physically, emotionally, socially and cognitively. The benefits last a lifetime.

The research affirms our commitment to creating great play. It’s a commitment shared by three generations of my family, and all of us at Playworld. That’s our difference. Unlike investment driven companies, we’re family owned and operated. It gives us the freedom to determine our own mission. And it’s simple: create meaningful unstructured play opportunities for today’s children.

From our fabricators and designers in Pennsylvania throughout our worldwide network of distributors, the entire team understands our mission. We’re not just making playground equipment. We’re in the kid–empowering, confidence–building, friendship–making, health–promoting, community-strengthening business.

For more than forty years, we’ve collaborated with people

like you to create great play opportunities. We consider it a privilege, and a responsibility. Thanks for your interest in Playworld, and for all you do to promote play!

Playfully,

Matthew M. Miller CEO / Husband / Father / SonPlayworld Systems, Inc.

The playground is the last sacred space where kids can play and parents can feel comfortable. We’ve got to give them the opportunity to discover their childhood on their own terms.
