Welcome to the 2016 GANE Annual Conference

Dear Colleagues,

Greetings from the Board of Directors and Officers! Thank you for joining us on Jekyll Island for the

2016 GANE annual conference: Excellence and Innovation in Nursing Education. Your presence at this

meeting reflects your commitment to increasing your knowledge, enhancing your skills, and ensuring that

the citizens of Georgia are receiving high quality nursing education and healthcare. Over the next several

days, you will have the opportunity to learn, network, and recharge for a productive return to your jobs,

patients, and students.

We hope you will enjoy all aspects of the conference including the annual meeting on Friday morning

where you will hear year-end summaries of state and regional activities as well as receive election results.

On Friday, be sure to attend the awards luncheon where students, faculty, and practice scholars will be

recognized. If you are not already a member, this may be your year, so stop by the membership booth for

more information and join GANE in 2016; many opportunities await!

Welcome to the 2016 GANE Annual Conference

The GANE Executive Board and Program Planning Committee welcome you to the 2016 GANE Annual Conference!! The theme of this year’s conference is: Excellence and Innovation in Nursing Education. The Jekyll Island Convention Center and Westin Hotel provide an ideal location to experience excellent presentations and networking with your colleagues. This year, we are excited to have 47 podium and 18 poster presentations in the categories of research, education, and practice. Additional concurrent sessions have been added that include hands on workshops by the GA Simulation Alliance. We have increased the contact hours to 15 for conference attendees. We are delighted to have two outstanding keynote and endnote speakers, Dr. Karen Morin and Ms. LaVonne Harn respectively. Dr. Morin and Ms. Harn have distinguished careers encompassing education, leadership, and practice. Please do not hesitate to contact me, or any planning committee member for information or assistance during the conference. The registration desk personnel will assist you in locating one of the committee members. Our GANE members are the heart of this organization!! We welcome your questions and feedback!! Dr. Karen H. Morin, PhD, RN, ANEF, FAAN is Professor Emerita, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, visiting Professor at the Tanner System School of Nursing – The University of West Georgia, Director of the Center for Nursing Inquiry, Bronson Methodist Hospital, Kalamazoo, Michigan, and Associate Editor, Journal of Nursing Education. Prior to her retirement from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, she was Director of the PhD Program. She has taught undergraduate students maternal—child health nursing, research, and leadership and management; DNP students leadership and management; and PhD students research, theory development, and dissertation seminar. Her teaching expertise was recognized nationally by the National League for Nursing in 2003, when she received the Excellence in Teaching Award, and also in 1999 by the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses [AWHONN] when she received the Excellence in Nursing Education Award. Dr. Morin has spent a considerable amount of her professional career serving in voluntary leadership roles in professional associations. She is a Past President of the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International, serving as President from 2009-2011. Dr. Morin has served as faculty in the STTI and Johnson & Johnson Maternal-Child Health Leadership Academy Planning Committee, as well as the Board Leadership and Mentored Leadership Programs. She is a founding faculty of the STTI & Johnson & Johnson Maternal-Child Health Leadership Academy. She co-chaired the STTI/WHO Global Nursing Education Standards Conference held in Bangkok, Thailand in December, 2006. She currently serves as mentor to a Leadership Scholar in the Experienced Nurse Faculty Leadership Academy and to one in the Nurse Faculty Leadership Academy – both programs offered through STTI’s International Leadership Institute. Her organizational involvement extends beyond Sigma Theta Tau International. Dr. Morin served in numerous leadership roles with the Delaware Nurses Association, including as its President from 1996 to 1998. Given her expertise in Maternal-Child Nursing, Dr. Morin was also involved with the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses, serving as Co-Chair, Program Committee, 2007 National Convention, as Director–at-Large, Board of Directors (2001-2003), as chair of the AWHONN National Research Committee (2000). In 2010, she was recognized, through a vetted process, as one of 60 Visionary Leaders by the University of Alabama School of Nursing. An accomplished author, investigator and presenter, Dr. Morin has published more than 100 journal articles, chapters, and abstracts, and presented at numerous local, regional, and international conferences. Her research efforts have addressed the consequences of obesity during pregnancy, faculty orientation efforts, and gendered issues in healthcare. Current collaborative research efforts include instrument development of academic leadership qualities. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from University of Ottawa, her Master of Science in Nursing from University of Central Arkansas and her Doctor of Science in Nursing from University of Alabama. She was inducted into the Academy of Nurse Educators (2009) and the American Academy of Nursing (2011).

LaVonne Harn, MSN, RN is a motivational speaker and owner of a business called “A Word”. LaVonne is a seasoned, well known public speaker who reaches a variety of audiences. However, she especially enjoys speaking to healthcare professionals. LaVonne has spoken at pinning ceremonies, graduations and other celebratory events. Prior to her retirement in 2005, to care for her chronically ill husband, LaVonne was vice President of Patient Care Services for the Medical Center of Central Georgia, Macon, Ga. LaVonne was responsible for planning and developing orientation programs, internships, supports systems, and mentoring programs for new Graduate nurses. LaVonne also developed and participated in hospital recruitment, retention events. LaVonne has been a life-long advocate for clients and families of those dealing with substance abuse and mental illnesses. She has been a strong advocate and advisor to the Georgia Board of Nursing relative to the Impaired Nurse Programs. She is past President of N.A.M.I. ( National Alliance for the Mentally Ill) of Central, Ga. She is a certified trainer for N.A.M.I’s “ Family to Family” courses. She also staffed N.A.M.I’s crisis line as a volunteer. LaVonne is an expert team-builder. She uses her business, “A Word”, as a vehicle to do team-building events and intervention for healthcare facilities. She also speaks to many churches and schools. She does consultation and assessments for small rural hospitals as they develop strategic plans. LaVonne’s Professional and Community Affiliations are:

Conference evaluations and certificates are online again this year!

Here is how it works:

On February 18th, GANE will place an option on the official GANE website called “Conference Evalua-

tions.” So go to:

http://georgiaassociationfornursingeducation.com and click on the Conference Evaluations option

You will need to log into the evaluation site. A specific username and password will be emailed to you on

February 18th. The email will come from Express

Evaluations, GANE’s online evaluations provider. So look for an email from

[email protected]

Your username will be your email address, the one you used to register for this event. Your password will

be gane

When you get logged in:

Vendors:

Click on and complete the Vendor Evaluation

Attendees:

Evaluate each Session you attended, this accumulates your contact hours

Complete the Overall Evaluation of the GANE conference

Lastly, click on Certificate; create your certificate and download/print it

You can log in and out as many times as you like, evaluating the conference as you attend sessions. Or

complete the evaluations at a later date. Lastly, you have to click on Certificate in order for your con-

tact hours to be posted.
