Welcome to the 2016 Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale

Keeneland has cataloged 1,796 horses for its 58th January Hors-es of All Ages Sale on Jan. 11-15,

2016. The catalog includes 624 brood-mares, 181 broodmare prospects, 729 yearlings, 251 horses of racing age and 11 stallions and stallion prospects.

“The January Sale is noted for high-quality broodmare prospects and short yearlings, and it gives breeders some final opportunities to obtain stock as breeding season nears,” Keeneland Directorof SalesGeoffreyRussell said.“We look for the sale to be a solid auc-tion that continues the strengths of the market seen during the November Breeding Stock Sale.”

The 624 broodmares in the catalog

are in foal to 168 stallions, including Bernardini, Bodemeister, City Zip, Cur-lin, Declaration of War, Empire Maker,Ghostzapper, Giant’s Causeway, Hard Spun,IntoMischief,Kitten’sJoy,LemonDropKid,LopedeVega,MalibuMoon,Medagliad’Oro,MoreThanReady,Orb,Pioneerof the Nile, Scat Daddy, Shack-leford, Shanghai Bobby, Speightstown, Street Sense, Tapit, Tiznow,UncleMo,UnionRagsandWarFront.

Short yearlings are foals of 2015 that officially turned a year old on Jan. 1. The 729 yearlings cataloged to the January Sale represent 191 stallions, among them Bernardini, Bodemeister, City Zip, Curlin, Distorted Humor, Giant’s Causeway, Into Mischief,Kitten’sJoy,LemonDropKid,Malibu Moon, More Than Ready, Orb,

Pioneerof the Nile, Scat Daddy, Shanghai Bobby, Speightstown, Street Cry (IRE),Street Sense, Super Saver, Tiznow, Uncle Mo,UnionRagsandWarFront.

The 2015 stakes winners that were sold as yearlings at the January Sale include Grade 1 winners Ball Danc-ing, Birdatthewire and Twilight Eclipse; Grade 2 winners Alert Bay, Bailoutbob-by,CallMeGeorge,ConquestDaddyo,Fioretti and Tower of Texas; and Grade 3winnerFarRight.

The January Sale also features two dispersals: the dispersal of the estate of Eric A. Delvalle, consigned by Brandy-wine Farms, agent, and the dispersal of theestateofSarahJ.Leigh,DenaliStud,agent.

Keeneland Sales StaffBill Thomason | Keeneland President and CEO

Bill Thomason became the seventh President and Chief Executive Officer of Keeneland onSeptember1,2012.HewaspreviouslytheVicePresident and Chief Financial Officer, havingjoined Keeneland in June 2010.

Thomason graduated from the University of Kentucky with a B.S. in Accounting in 1977 and aMastersinBusinessAdministrationin1978.Heworked for two years at the accounting firm of

Alexander Grant & Co. before joining Mill Ridge Farm, where heworkedfor28yearsasFinancialandAdministrativeManager.

He is a member of The Jockey Club, a trustee of the American Horse Council and a board member of the National Thoroughbred RacingAssociation(NTRA),ThoroughbredRacingAssociations(TRA),Thoroughbred Racing Protective Bureau (TRPB), ThoroughbredAftercare Alliance (TAA), University of Kentucky Gluck Equine ResearchFoundation,KentuckyChamber,CentralKentuckyChapterof the American Heart Association and Central Bank Lexington’sAdvisory Board of Directors. He formerly served as the assistant treasurer for the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association/Kentucky ThoroughbredOwnersandBreedersandwasamemberoftheauditcommitteeofBreeders’CupLtd.Thomasonalsopreviouslyservedastreasurer of the Thoroughbred Club of America.

An active community leader, Thomason was chairman of the Greater Lexington Chamber of Commerce (now CommerceLexington),chairmanoftheLexingtonArtsandCulturalCouncilandchairmanoftheBoardofFirstUnitedMethodistChurch.

Geoffrey G. Russell | Director of SalesGeoffreyRussell has served asKeeneland’s

Director of Sales since June 2001. Born in Dublin, Ireland, Russell gained

early experience at Coolmore Stud and as a bid spotter at Goffs. He came to the U.S. in 1982, first working at Fasig-Tipton Sales and then at Elmendorf Farm. He returned to Fasig-Tipton as Vice President of Fasig-Tipton Appraisals andDirector of Sales Administration prior to joining

Keenelandin1996asAssistantDirectorofSalestoRogersBeasley.Russell represents Keeneland on the Sales Integrity Task

Force, International Catalogue Standards Committee (NA) (ICSC), InternationalGradingandRacePlanningAdvisoryCommittee(IRPAC),andisViceChairmanoftheSocietyofInternationalThoroughbredAuctioneers (SITA). He is also on the board of the Grayson-Jockey Club Foundation.

Thomas J. Thornbury | Associate Director of SalesTom Thornbury was named Keeneland’s

Associate Director of Sales in June 2002. In his position, Thornbury acts as liaison to

consignor interests, cultivates relationships with horsemen in emerging racing markets, and serves as a member of the yearling inspection team.

Thornbury grew up on the farm owned by his father, John Thornbury, and partnerDr. RobertCopelan, where he was involved in training

and farm management, and assisted in equine orthopedic surgery. Thornbury spent nearly 10 years at Airdrie Stud, owned by former Governor and Mrs. Brereton C. Jones, working first as yearlingmanager and later as general manager.

He is a past president of the Thoroughbred Club of America and the Kentucky Thoroughbred Farm Managers’ Club, and formerlyserved on the board of the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association and KentuckyThoroughbredOwnersandBreeders.

Mark Maronde | Associate Director of Sales Development

MarkMarondebringsmore than20yearsofexperience in the Thoroughbred industry to the Keeneland sales team, which he joined in April 2009.

He assists with recruiting and marketing efforts for the Keeneland sales and serves as a member of the yearling inspection team.

Maronde spent five years in the bloodstockdivision of WinStar Farm prior to Keeneland. He

honedhisinspectionandsalesrecruitingskillsasNationalFieldRep-resentativeforBarretts’EquineLtd.(1996–2009)andwiththeCanadianThoroughbredHorseSociety(2007–2009).HealsoworkedforCrom-wellBloodstockfrom1990–1995.

Chip McGaughey | Sales AssociateC.R.“Chip”McGaugheyjoinedtheKeeneland

sales team on Feb. 1, 2015.A graduate of the University of Kentucky,

McGaughey gained experience in racingthrough his father, Hall of Fame trainer C.R.“Shug” McGaughey, and while working as aninaugural Brand Ambassador for America’s Best Racing,TheJockeyClub’sinitiativetointroduceyoung people to the sport.

Ryan Mahan | Director of AuctioneersRyan Mahan considered following his

stepfather, Dr. Robert Copelan, into veteri-nary medicine.

Instead, he finds himself in the auction stand at the leading Thoroughbred sales company in the world.

Mahaninitiallyhadhisownauctioncom-pany but in 1977 he came to work at Keene-land as a bid spotter and later chief announc-

er for several years following the departure of Tom Hammond. Promoted to auctioneer in the mid ’80s, he succeeded the

late Tom Caldwell in 2001 as senior auctioneer. Mahanalsoservesonthe inspectionteamforKeeneland’s

Highest Prices — January Horses of All Ages Sale

Keeneland inaugurated the January Horses of All Ages Sales in the 1950s, conducting the first editions of the sale in 1956 and 1957. Following a three-year hiatus, the January Sale was resumed in 1961 and has been held annually since. As the name implies, the January Horses of All Ages Sale offers a variety of racing and breeding stock, including broodmares, broodmare prospects, yearlings, racing prospects and horses of racing age, stallions and stallion prospects, and stallion shares and seasons.

Background: Craig and Holly Bandoroff’s Denali Stud sold 22 horses for $1,241,700 at Keene- land’s 2015 January Horses of All Ages Sale. Its high seller was broodmare prospect Premier Steps (IRE), aGrade 3-winning daugh-ter of Footstepsinthesand. Shadai Farm paid $400,000 for the 4-year-old.

The Bandoroffs have operated Denali Stud near Paris, Ky., since 1990. Craig Ban-doroff was a jockey in New Jersey in the early 1970s until a spill at Garden State Park in 1974 left him without the use of his right arm, forcing him to explore other career paths within the industry. The Bandoroffs each gained experience working in various bloodstock and sales capacities. The name of their operation is derived from the name givenby theEskimos toMt.McKinleyandmeans “the great one.”

Inthelate1990s,BobLewisandhiswife,Beverly, sent their champion racemare Ser-ena’s Song to Denali when she was retired. Denali has sold several of Serena Song’s offspring, including Group 1 winner Sophis-ticat, by Storm Cat, for $3.4 million at the 2000 Keeneland July Selected Yearling Sale; Grade 2 winner Harlington, by Unbridled, for $2.8 million at the 2003 Keeneland Sep-tember Yearling Sale; and Colourful Score, a colt by Storm Cat, for $3.5 million at the 2005 September Sale.

Another notable sale for Denali occurred at Keeneland’s 2015 November Breeding Stock Sale when it consigned multiple Grade 1winnerPhotoCall(IRE),byGalileo(IRE).Photo Call sold to Crupi’s New Castle for $3 million, the third-highest price of the auc-tion.

Among the other horses Denali has sold is 2015 stakes winner Cajun Schill, winner of the Calumet Farm Juvenile at Kentucky Downs. The son of Artie Schiller was con-signed by Denali to the 2014 January Sale, wherehewaspurchasedbyPatriceMiller/EQB for $31,000.

Two horses Denali sold at Keeneland’s 2013 September Yearling Sale became Grade 1 winners in 2015: Curalina, winner of the Acorn and Coaching Club AmericanOaks,and Her Emmynency, winner of the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Presented by Lane’sEndatKeeneland.EclipseThorough-

bred Partners and Dogwood Stable bought Curalina for $125,000. Ike and Dawn Thrash purchased Her Emmynency for $115,000.

The Bandoroffs’ involvement in Thor-oughbred racing continues another genera-tion. Their son, Conrad, is among the 12 people from seven countries selected for the 2015-2017 class of the Darley Flying Start program.

Background: Eaton Sales Inc. is owned by Reiley McDonald, whopurchased the sales agency from its founder, the late Lee Eaton, inthe 1990s. In 2015, Ea-ton Sales was among the January Sale’s leading consignors. It sold 24 horses for $904,500.

Among the 2015 stakes winners that are Eaton graduates of Keeneland sales are Grade 1 winners Cavorting, purchased by Stonestreet Stables for $360,000 at the 2012 November Breeding Stock Sale, and Dame Dorothy, sold to Bobby Flay for $390,000 at the 2012 September Yearling Sale.

McDonald, a Maryland native, holds adegree in animal sciences from Cornell Uni-versityandworkedatvariousMarylandracetracks as an exercise rider and assistant train-er. He was an officer of Fasig-Tipton Com-pany Inc. prior to buying Eaton Sales.

Background: Four Star Sales consigned the two highest-priced horses of Keeneland’s 2015 January Horses of All Ages Sale. The sale-topper was Up (IRE),a daughter of Galileo (IRE) in foal to WarFront who was purchased by Ran Jan Racing (Robert Naify) and JanVandebosfor$2.2million.

Four Star also sold Up’s yearling filly by War Front, purchased by Solis/Litt for$800,000. The filly is now named Upfront.

Four Star was the second-leading con-signor at the auction, selling 41 horses for $3,873,700.

In 2002, Four Star was founded by Kerry Cauthen,JohnT.L.JonesJr.,DanKennyandthe late David Greathouse. Cauthen serves asManagingPartneroftheorganization.

Cauthen is a third-generation Kentucky horsemanwhosebrothersareRacingHallofFame jockey Steve Cauthen and bloodstock adviser Doug Cauthen. An attorney, he pre-viously worked as counsel and bloodstock adviser at Walmac Farm, which Jones de-veloped into an international stallion station withsuchleadingsiresasNureyev,Miswakiand Alleged.

In 2005, Jones sold Walmac to his son, JohnT.L.JonesIII,andRobertTrussellandremains as Director Emeritus.

Kenny honed his bloodstock skills in Canada and California before moving to Kentucky in 1993. He purchased future Broodmare of the Year In Neon for John Franks and bought the dams of champions Chilukki and Phantom Light prior to theirstakes-producing success.

Background: Locatedon Paris Pike, Gainesway is a 1,500-acre, full-service Thoroughbred farm that stands nine stallions, including lead-ing sire Tapit. New to Gainesway for 2016 is Belmont (G1) winner Empire Maker, recentlyreturned from Japan.

Gainesway was founded by John R.Gaines, who was famous for his innovations in the Thoroughbred industry, including the concept that became the Breeders’ Cup World Championships. In 1989, Graham J. Beck, a successful businessman, wine mak-er, and Thoroughbred horseman in his na-tive South Africa, purchased the farm from Gaines.

Beck died in July 2010. Today, his son, Antony, oversees farm operations as presi-dent. The younger Beck’s involvement in the industry includes serving on the board of di-rectorsofBreeders’CupLtd.

Gainesway includes two historic opera-tions,GreentreeStudandtheC.V.Whitneyfarm. Beck and his wife, Angela, have nur-tured Gainesway into a facility known for more than Thoroughbreds. An emphasis on trees and spectacular gardens helped the farm earn official status as an arboretum from the American Public Garden Associa-tion.

lion Station stood Horse of the Year Sunday Silence, winner of the 1989 Kentucky Derby (G1), Preakness (G1) and Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) and Japan’s leading stallion for 13 years.

Shadai Stallion Station is home to some 30 stallions, including Sunday Silence’s son Deep Impact. Katsumi Yoshida bred Deep Impact, a two-time Horse of the Year in Ja-pan and a leading sire in that country.

Northern Farm bred 2014 Japan Cup (G1) winner Epiphaneia. The farm also bred the colt’s dam, Cesario (JPN), winner of the 2007 American Oaks Invitational (G1) atHollywood Park. U. Carrot Farm raced both horses.
