This graduate certificate focuses on building teacher expertise in the systematic observation and assessment of reading, writing, and language behaviors, and using responsive teaching that incorporates whole group, small group, and individual teaching to differentiate instruction for all students in the literacy classroom. Teachers will use the descriptions of language and literacy development listed in The Continuum of Literacy Learning: A Guide to Teaching by Fountas and Pinnell to assess students, plan for instruction, and to build their own understandings of a theory of literacy learning based on reading, writing, and talking as complex thinking processes. The systematic focus on building an integrated approach to teaching all aspects of literacy across several contexts in the classroom will contribute to students’ agency as literacy learners and foster a community of learners who value intellectual inquiry and collaborative learning. This certificate program may be used as a specialization to fulfill some of the requirements for the M.Ed. Individually Designed Program for Educators.
