To Parents, Teachers, Alumni and Friends:

As president of Affton Education Foundation, I am pleased to announce our participationin a $150,000 Development Challenge Grant Campaign.

AEF has supported the students and teachers of the Affton School District andcommunity since 2005. Our original mission continues to be our guide - to improve andenhance educational opportunities and resources for all children enrolled in the districtand for the teachers who support them. Our goal is to preserve the high educationalstandards of the district by providing additional classroom resources and inspiringstudents to attend college.

Each year, AEF awards grants for classroom enrichment to teachers at all grade levels, Pre-K through 12. For the2016-2017 school year, we funded 33 classroom grants totaling over $30,000, and since its inception, the Teacher GrantProgram has awarded 294 grants totaling over $258,000.

AEF’s support of Affton graduates takes many forms. We award up to six (6) renewable $2,500 scholarships, and upto four (4) $2,500 interest-free loans, each year to qualifying Affton High School graduates. In addition, we encourageand support generous alumni in the establishment of other scholarships, and help with the administration of same:

· The Rickli Family Scholarship to Truman State University (funded by the Kenneth Rickli family; full-tuitionand renewable)

· The Coach Don Kuhn Scholarship to Westminster College (funded by Kent & Judith Mueller; full-tuition andrenewable)

· The Jim Hoots Memorial Scholarship (established by the family and friends of Affton alumnus Jim Hoots toprovide college funds for Affton High School scholar athletes; $2,500 - renewable)

Finally, every year AEF sponsors a series of overnight college campus visits that are attended by up to 80 Affton juniorsand seniors.

We are justifiably proud of our accomplishments, and of our efforts which have enabled us to secure an endowment ofalmost $1.7 million. However, recent organizational development studies have indicated a need to increase ourendowment to over $2 million - not only to maintain our scholarship and grant commitments, but to also continue togrow and sustain us financially for future projects. To this end, we have embarked on a multi-year Development Challenge Grant Campaign. A $150,000 Challenge Fundwill be formed from donation commitments of $50,000 each from three generous alumni families:

· The Thompson Family Foundation (Bill ’63 & Nancy ’64 Thompson)· David ’78 & Datra ’79 Herzog· Kurt ’79 & Carolyn ’79 Jaeger

Under the Challenge Grant agreement, AEF will receive the Challenge funds as long as we are able to raise a total of$250,000 in the next 1 ½ years. Thus, by December 31, 2018, we expect to have increased our endowment by a totalof $400,000, thereby reaching our objective of a $2+ million endowment and securing a productive and bright futurefor our organization, Affton students and the Affton community.

We need your support in order to succeed. We’re counting down to liftoff…

and to a brighter future for the Affton schools!

Best Regards,Kurt Jaeger (‘79)

Did you know? In the mid-1850’s, a little village began to take shape along GravoisCreek, just southwest of the St. Louis City limits. As immigrants came to the area, the landwas divided into a patchwork quilt of truck farms. Before the village’s first church wasbuilt, before the first post office was established, before the first road was paved, thefamilies of the village – named Affton for its first postmaster George Aff – banded togetherto establish a public school. With that one move, the Affton community began a legacy of dedication to childrenand education that still thrives today, more than 150 years later. Honored with Distinctionin Performance by the Missouri Department of Education many times over, the district hasinstituted numerous creative programs, such as Early Childhood Education; wonchampionships and awards in all types of sports as well as vocal, theatrical and bandprograms; and has established a rigorous college-prep curriculum. However, funds are a challenge for the district and many of its students. The AfftonEducation Foundation was established in 2005 to meet this challenge, its mission being toimprove and enhance educational opportunities and resources for all children enrolled inthe Affton School District, and for the teachers who support them. Our goal is to preservethe high educational standards of the district by providing additional classroom resourcesand to inspire students to attend their first-choice colleges.

The Affton Education Foundation needs your support!Help us meet our Challenge! Donate today!

YES, I would like to contribute to the important mission of the Affton Education Foundationin support of the students and teachers of Affton.

In April, members of the Affton High School Class of 1957 celebrated in style with a busy, multi-day eventto mark their 60th Reunion. The festivities kicked off on Thursday afternoon with a casual lunch at O’Leary’s, a favoriteAffton hangout. The fun continued on Friday evening with a dinner gathering at Gianino’s Restaurant.

The Class of ‘57 came out in force for Saturday night’s main event held at Trattoria Toscana. The 39 attendees, 25 ofwhom were classmates, enjoyed comparing notes and catching up amid lovely purple and gold decorations. Keepsakeplacemats, made from the original “cap and gown” composite photograph, adorned the tables and served as a clever wayto recognize the entire 100 member graduating class.

The 28 classmates known to be deceased were remembered with a candlelit, and tastefully framed, memorial tribute.A total of 12 “out of towners” were in attendance, including Jim Musgrave who had traveled all the way from Hawaii andwas experiencing his first reunion. The gathering welcomed former art teacher, Mrs. Jeannine Cook, who proudly announcedthat John Foster Dyess, a fellow artist and ‘57 graduate, had been inducted into the Affton Hall of Fame in 2016.

The Jim Hoots Memorial Scholarship was established after Jim’s sudden passing in October of 2013. Each year it isawarded to a deserving student athlete graduating from Affton High School. The scholarship is designed to help pay forcollege tuition, books and supplemental expenses, and is managed by the Affton Education Foundation. In addition to thegenerosity of many donors, the scholarship is funded through an annual golf tournament and auction held in Jim’s honor.Last year, more than 200 guests attended this event. We hope you’ll join us in making this year’s event an even greatersuccess!
