2017 ACU FOOTBALL HELMET STICKERS“EY” The Wildcats are wearing a sticker with the initials “EY,” which also includes blue and black bars. She was killed in a tragic automobile accident while on duty in early August and the Wildcats wear a sticker this season in her memory.

“P4X” P4X is for the Play 4 Rex Foundation, which was established in March 2013 after the death of 10-year-oldRex Fleming, the son ofACU associate AD for media relations LanceFleming. Rex fought braincancer for two years before passing away in November 2012. The foundation raises money to aid those who are dealing with and living with pediatric cancer.

“Hurricane Harvey” Because almost half of the Southland’s 11 football-playing schools have been affected by HurricaneHarvey, the SouthlandConference has askedeach team to wear thishelmet sticker at least thisopening weekend in order to enhance awareness surrounding the recovery and relief efforts currently going on in South Texas and Louisiana.

ACU HEAD COACH ADAM DORREL

dam Dorrel – who has led his teams to remarkable conference and national playoff success the past six

seasons – was introduced Dec. 19, 2016, as the 20th head coach in ACU football history.

Dorrel joined the ACU staff after leading his alma mater, Northwest Missouri State University, to its second straight NCAA Division II national championship and third under his watch. In six seasons as a head coach, Dorrel has compiled a 76-8 record, a 90.5 winning percentage that is the best active mark in college football, ahead of Ohio State University’s Urban Meyer (second at 85.5 percent). Dorrel led the Bearcats to the NCAA Division II playoffs in all six of his seasons as the head coach and coached them to 30 straight victories to end his tenure at Northwest. That 30-game streak is the longest in the nation at any level, besting Alabama’s 25-game winning streak by five games.

He also was voted the American Football Coaches’ Association (AFCA) Division II Coach of the Year in 2013, 2015, and 2016 when he led the Bearcats to national titles. Aside from their prowess on the field, the Bearcats also have been successful in the classroom. Northwest student-athletes have had a higher cumulative GPA than the rest of the student body for more than 10 years. The football program is part of that, carrying a cumulative team GPA of 2.89 in Fall 2015 with three student-athletes earning a 4.0 GPA and another 62 earning at least a 3.0 GPA. Northwest football players have earned more than 200 academic all-MIAA citations since 2011 and six have earned academic all-America honors.

Dorrel inherits an ACU program that just completed its transition period from Division II status to Division I (FCS) affiliation, and in 2017 will be eligible to win the conference title and reach the national playoffs. The Wildcats also will be moving into a new venue (Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium), the first time they will have an on-campus stadium to call home since 1946, the last full season they played at A.B. Morris Field.

ACU, however, is just 5-17 over the last two seasons and resides in the Southland Conference, one of the top FCS leagues in the country. The challenge for Dorrel will be to quickly build his staff,

hit the recruiting trail in advance of the Feb. 1, national signing day for high school athletes, and get to know the players on his current roster.

Prior to being named head coach, Dorrel was the offensive coordinator for the Bearcats from 2007-10, four times facing ACU when the Wildcats were members of the Lone Star Conference. The teams split four games with the Wildcats winning two

regular season contests and the Bearcats winning two playoff games (2008 in Abilene and 2009 in Maryville, Mo.).

During that stretch, Dorrel helped the Bearcats to an unprecedented five consecutive Division II championship appearances and their third national title in 2009.

Dorrel became the 19th head coach in Northwest history in 2011, succeeding Mel Tjeerdsma who retired after 17 seasons in 2010. In Dorrel’s 12 seasons with the Bearcats since joining their coaching staff in 2004, they have a 152-21 record and seven MIAA championships.

After earning his bachelor’s degree from Northwest in 1998, Dorrel spent a year as a graduate assistant at Northeastern State University (Okla.). He returned to the Bearcats as a graduate assistant in 1999 when the team won the second of its back-to-back national titles.

He completed his master’s degree at Northwest in 2000. Dorrel was an assistant coach at Dakota State University in

South Dakota and William Jewell College in Missouri before being appointed offensive line coach at Northwest in 2004. He became offensive coordinator in 2007 and then head coach prior to the 2011 season.

He is a former all-America offensive lineman and three-year captain at Northwest. He graduated in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education, and earned his Master of Science (health and physical education) in 2000.

A Maryville, Mo., native, Dorrel also was a two-time all-district and all-conference lineman at Maryville High School. Dorrel and his wife, Erin, have twin 6 year-old daughters, Allie and Sam. n

What They're Saying About Adam Dorrel“Adam Dorrel has done a tremendous job leading the Northwest Missouri State University Bearcat football program. He inherited a program that had been through a significant amount of transition in a short period of time. What he has done to build on a proud Northwest tradition is simply amazing. The past six years at Northwest are among the greatest for any program in college football history in terms of both competitive and academic excellence. Adam is a people person who is warm and genuine. His passion is contagious. ACU is getting an outstanding coach and excellent recruiter who knows how to build a highly successful program. But more than that, they are getting a servant leader who loves student-athletes and will serve as a great role model for those around him. Congratulations to ACU and Adam.”

— Wren Baker Vice President and Director of Athletics University of North Texas

“Adam Dorrel is one of the most outstanding young coaches in college football. His six years as head coach at Northwest Missouri State University have been truly amazing. Coach Dorrel’s organizational skills and his ability to get everyone working together towards a common goal are his greatest assets. Abilene Christian University is fortunate to have him as its head football coach.”

DORREL BY THE NUMBERS

• Winningest active head coach in NCAA football (90 .5 winning percentage)

• Head coach of three NCAA Division II national championship teams (2013, 2015, 2016) • Led Northwest Missouri State to wins in each of his final 30 games as the head coach • Only coach in NCAA Division II history to win three national titles with perfect 15-0 records in each season

• One of only three head coaches in NCAA Division II history to win three national championships

I believe that with the commitment ACU is making to athletics in general and football in particular that this is a sleeping giant.”

ACU HEAD COACH ADAM DORREL

96th Season of Wildcat Football

ACU will be playing its 96th season of college football in 2017. The Wildcats enter the season with an all-time record of 486-411-32 (.540 winning percentage). ACU should be playing its 99th season of football, but it didn’t field a team from 1943-45 because of World War II.

Seventeen Starters Are Back

ACU returns 17 starters from the 2016 squad that finished 2-9 overall and 2-7 in the Southland Conference. The Wildcats should be returning 18 starters, but offensive lineman Riley Mayfield graduated in May and took his two years of remaining eligibility with him to North Texas, leaving the Wildcats a gaping hole to fill on the offensive line. Nine starters return on offense, led by junior quarterback Dallas Sealey and senior running back De’Andre Brown. Sealey was one of the most proudctive signal-callers in the league in 2016, while Brown will be looking to rebound from an injury-plagued junior season to find the form he disaplayed his first two seasons when he ran for more than 1,700 yards. The Wildcats will also be without the services of wide receiver D.J. Fuller in 2017 as he sits out because of eligibility issues. Fuller is expected to redshirt in 2017 and return for the 2018 season. Defensively, the Wildcats return seven starters, although Bryson Gates returns but is switching from outside linebacker to rush defensive end. Middle linebacker Sam Denmark continues his pursuit of the all-time ACU record for tackles, needing just 63 to surpass Ryan Boozer (1999- 02) for the all-time record. ACU returns just two defensive backs from last

season, including just one starter in cornerback Adonis Davis, who had a solid freshman season. Also returning is reserve cornerback Jamar Mack.

41 Lettermen Return

ACU returns 44 lettermen from last season – 20 on offense, 20 on defense, and one specialists. The most experienced position groups on the roster are wide receiver (nine returning lettermen) and linebacker (eight returning lettermen). The Wildcats lost the services of 21 lettermen from the 2016 season, including four-year punter Austin Kilcullen and three-year deep snapper Hayden Brodowsky.

Four Returning All-Southland Players

ACU will return four all-Southland Conference selections from 2016, including two first team selections in linebacker Sam Denmark and placekicker Nik Grau. Both Denmark and Grau have been selected to the conference’s 2017 pre-season all-conference team. Two players who were voted honorable mention all-conference – offensive lineman Dakota Laws and linebacker / defensive end Bryson Gates –also return to the Wildcats in 2017. The only player the Wildcats saw honored in 2016 who won’t return in 2017 is Mayfield, who was an honorable mention | all-league selection on the offensive line. He transfered to North Texas in the offseason.

Wildcats Face Tough Home Slate

The five teams who will be in Abilene in 2017 for the inaugural season at Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium will certainly test Adam Dorrel’s first team at ACU.

Houston Baptist – the first opponent in the new stadium – joins traditional league powers Stephen F. Austin, McNeese, Southeastern Louisiana and Sam Houston State in helping to christen the Wildcats’ new digs. Those five teams were a combined 34-23 in 2016 with the Bearkats posting a 12-1 mark en route to an NCAA Division I FCS quarterfinals appearance. The Bearkats lost to eventual FCS national champion James Madison in the playoffs. Three of ACU’s home opponents posted winning records in 2016 with Sam Houston State finishing at 12-1, followed by Southestern Louisiana at 7-4 and McNeese at 6-5. Stephen F. Austin was 6-5 and Houston Baptist had the best season in its program’s short four-year history with a 4-7 record, including a 27-24 overtime win over ACU in Houston, the Huskies’ first win over the Wildcats. Overall, the Wildcats’ 11 opponents in 2017 were a combined 69-60 in 2016, including a 9-4 record by season-opening opponent New Mexico and a 7-6 record by Sept. 9 foe Colorado State.

ACU Tabbed to Finish 8th in Southland

The ACU Wildcats, who are about to embark on a historic 2017 football season, were picked to finish eighth in the Southland Conference pre-season poll. Sam Houston State – which won league titles in four of the previous six seasons – has been picked by both the coaches’ and the sports information directors to win the league championship in 2017. The Bearkats captured 20 of 22 possible first-place votes and 200 points. Central Arkansas – which finished second in the league last year – has been picked to finish second again in 2017, capturing two first-place votes and 177 total points.

2017 SEASON TIDBITS

ACU at NEW MEXICO

SEASON PREVIEW: OFFENSE

12

QuarterbackJunior Dallas Sealey returns in 2017 for his

second season as the starter, and he’s coming off a solid sophomore season that saw him throw for 2,773 yards and 19 touchdowns, finishing in the top three in the league in completions, completion percentage, passingyards, passing yards per game, touchdowns and total offense.

Sealey threw for at least 300 yards in seven of the 10 games in which he played (all starts), including a 400-yard effort in a 41-30 loss against Stephen F. Austin.

Redshirt freshman Luke Anthony, who had a very solid spring training, enters the 2017 season as the backup quarterback with senior Kade Munden as the third string quarterback. Lamberson, however, said Munden will have a role in the offense this season

Coach Lamberson: “Dallas Sealey has a unique skill set and is very athletic. His experience at the Division I level is invaluable. Luke has made a phenomenal progression since January and is doing a great job learning the little things it takes to play quarterback. Kade will be very involved in a lot of our offensive sets. He's a very versatile athlete who can do a lot of different things in this offense.”

Player to Watch: Dallas Sealey joins Sam Houston State's Jeremiah Briscoe, Hayden Hildenbrand of Central Arkansas, James Tabary of McNeese and Chase Fourcade of Nicholls as the top five signal-callers in the league. He was second in the league in total offense per game (302.0) in 2016 behind Briscoe (349.9 ypg) as they were the only two players in the league to post more than 300 yards per game in total offense.

Running BacksSenior De’Andre Brown went through an

injury-plagued season in 2016 as he ran for just 259 yards and two touchdowns last year after rushing for more than 1,700 yards and 14 touchdowns in his first two seasons.

He enters the season needing 701 yards to move into fourth place on the Wildcats' all-time

rushing chart and less than 125 to move into 10th place on the all-time list.

Sophomore Tracy James ran for 232 yards and four touchdowns and caught 14 passes for 202 yards and two scores, including a 76-yard catch and run touchdown in the season-opener against Air Force, and he enters the season as the backup behind Brown. Lamberson, however, said James will get plenty of opportunities in 2017.

Freshman Qua'Shawn Washington from Abilene High could see some time in the backfield as well..

Coach Lamberson: “De’Andre and Tracy will carry the bulk of the load in the backfield. Those two have been a great duo and complement each other very well. They are both well-rounded backs who can do everything a running back is asked to do in this offense.”

Player to Watch: De’Andre Brown can be a difference-making player in the backfield when healthy. He struggled with leg injuries all season after suffering an injury in the season-opener, and those injuries kept him from ever playing at 100 percent during the season. However, he had a terrific spring and the coaches are counting on him to show off the ability he displayed in 2014 and 2015.

Fullback / Tight End / H-BacksOver the years the tight end has played a big

role int he Wildcats' offense, and 2017 should be no different as the Wildcats return Trevor Crain, Cody Ennis and Liam Flowers, who will also see time at the tight end / fullback / h-back positions.

Coach Lamberson: “Trevor can play multiple positions, and we're excited about what this group brings to the table.”

Player to Watch: Trevor Crain was voted a team captain and the coaches are excited to see what he can do in 2017 after a strong spring.

Wide ReceiversThe biggest loss for the Wildcats in the

off-season came in the receiver group as D.J. Fuller –who led the Wildcats in catches (51),

receiving yards (749) and touchdown receptions (6) – will miss the 2017 season after being ruled academically ineligible. Fuller will redshirt in 2017 with the intent of returning to the team in 2018.

The Wildcats, however, still return their next four leagine receivers in senior Troy Grant (41-46-5 in 2016), sophomore Josh Fink (40-482-3), sohpomore Justin Miller (22-240-0), and Brown (19-228-1).

They also return redshirt senior Carl Whitley, who missed the entire 2016 season after suffering a knee injury in the penultimate game of the 2015 season. He caught 21 passes for 374 yards and two touchdowns in 2015.

Other returnees are Kalin Sadler (12-102-0), DeShun Qualls (6-51-0) and Chase Cokley (5-35-0). Coach Lamberson: “We're looking for big things from this group. We've got good senior leadership in Whitley and Troy Grant. Thsi group has the potential to make a lot of big plays for us.”

Player to Watch: Carl Whitley hasn't played since late in the 2015 season, but will be counted on to provide leadership and big-play ability, especially with Fuller out for the season.

Offensive Line For the second straight season, this position group has probably the most question marks on the team, especially with the loss of Mayfield. The line will be bolstered by the additions of transfers Bates and Webber. Webber should start at center, while Bates will start at left tackle. ACU also returns Chance Rieken, Dakota Laws, Brady Melde, Austin Hisler, Anietie Etuk, Jon Crisp, Slayde Anderson and Emoree Giddens. Freshmen Peyton Bird, Everett Gunnoe, Kage Hendrix, Clay Padgett, and Kade Parmelly could also figure into the mix. Coach Lamberson: “This position group is probably our biggest question mark entering the season. But it's also a group that came a long way way since the spring and will only get better as they get more reps together.” Player to Watch: Weber solidifies a line that lost Mayfield, and his experience at the FBS level (Toledo) will help the Wildcats in 2017.

Sophomore RB Tracy James

hen Adam Dorrel took over as the ACU head football coach in December 2016, one of his goals was for his team to become the most physical unit in the Southland Conference. That was the theme the offense carried throughout spring training as a new offense was installed under offensive coordinator Josh Lamberson, who ran Dorrel’s offense as the quarterback at Northwest Missouri State from 2001-05, leading the Bearcats to the 2005 NCAA Division II national championship game.

If the Wildcats are going to be similar to those Northwest Missouri State teams, ACU fans can expect to see a multi-faceted offense that will feature called quarterback runs, some plays for the backup quarterbacks, a desired 50-50 run-pass ratio, and a commitment to perfecting the fundamentals.

But a physical offense starts with a physical offense line, and that’s where the Wildcats have their biggest question marks going into 2017.. Starting right tackle Riley Mayfield graduated in May and left for North Texas where he'll have two years of eligibility remaining. Another question mark comes in the form of transfer Bill Webber, who should push his way into the starting lineup right away.

The transition to a new offensive style began in the spring and the results of the work will begin to show up on Sept. 2 when the Wildcats open the season at New Mexico. Until then, much work is left to be done and some major holes left to be filled.n

W

Defensive EndsWith Gates moving down to end from outside

lienbacker, the Wildcats have a solid crew of defensive ends with Gates and returning starters Dylan Douglass – voted a team captain – and sophomore Temisan Kuyatsemi.

Also returning are sophomores Corey Smith and Reynel Previlon, each of whom showed some flashes in 2016 of being able to contribute more heavily in 2017.

The Wildcats also added Arkansas transfer Daytrieon Dean in the offseason and hope he can step in right away and lend his experience from playing in the Southeastern Conference to the rest of the front four.

The Wildcats also added ends Kameron Hill and Cordel Ijoma in the signing class, and one or more of those could contribute in 2017.

Coach Jackson: “We've got a very athletic group of guys, and we hope they can provide pressure on the opposing quarterback..”

Player to Watch: Daytrieon Dean is a 6-3, 280-pound transfer from Arkansas who was a three-star recruit and ranked the ninth-best player in Arkansas after his senior season of 2014. He hasn't played in two seasons at Arkansas, but ACU coaches are hoping he can make an impact on the Wildcats' defense .

Defensive TacklesSophomore Cole Burgess moves inside from

defensive end and joins returner Dante Hibbert. The Wildcats lost three-year starter LaMarcus Allen to grades over the summer, putting an already thin position in even further peril..

The Wildcats have added transfer Jaleel Carter from from Fresno State. The Alief Elsik HS (Houston area) graduate is returning home after playing in just one game in two seasons witht he Bulldogs. Carter is a big body at 6-2, 320 pounds who should be able to help the Wildcats plug up the middle of the defensive line and help the defense improve a run defense that gave us 207

yards per game on the ground in 2016. Coach Jackson: “This is a hysically strong

group of guys that we think can help improve our run defense.”

Player to Watch: Dante Hibbert was voted a team captain after a solid spring and summer of pre-season workouts. Coaches love his work ethic and leadership qualities.

LinebackersSenior middle linebacker Sam Denmark has

started 33 straight games and played in all 34 games of his ACU career, and he enters the season closing in on a pair of Wildcat football career records. If he starts all 11 regular-season games, he will be second on ACU's all-time games started list (44) behind center Sam Collins (46 from 2005-08), and his 45 games played would be second to Collins. He’s also just 63 tackles away from breaking the ACU school record of 388 set by Ryan Boozer from 1998-2001.

Denmark will be joined in the linebacker corps by returners Gavin Burford (MLB), Jeremiah Chambers (OLB), and Tryce Prince (OLB). The Wildcats also added high school signee Jack Gibbens and will move redshirt freshman Landry Hutchins from safety to linebacker in 2017.

Senior Royce Moore – who was voted a team captain in June – moves from safety to outside linebacker to provide more speed and pop in the linebacking corps.

Coach Jackson: “This is a mart group that we think help us be a better tackling unit."

Player to Watch: Denmark is obviously the key player, if for no other reason than the countdown to becoming the university's new all-time leading tackler. But there's also his leadership skills and every-down ability for the Wildcats that separate him from everyone else in this position group.

CornerbacksSophomore Adonis Davis is the only returning

player at the cornerback position, and he's coming off a solid freshman campaign that saw him play in seven games (six starts) and finish the season with 23 tackles.

Aside from Davis, the Wildcats also return Jamar Mack, who saw plenty of playing time at cornerback in 2017, along with redshirts Aaron Bunting, Kwame Darko-Mensah, Clabe Holmes IV, and Will Jackson.

Three freshman who signed with the Wildcats last February – Koy Richardson from Angleton HS, Obinna Udoye from Cedar Park HS and Dante Williams from Frisco Lone Star HS – could all be thrown into the fire in 2017.

Coach Jackson: “The jury is still out on this group. We'll have a lot of competition throughout the summer to determine who plays and who fits into the rotation.”

Player to Watch: Dante Williams had 79 tackles, 23 pass breakups and six interceptions as a senior in high school, leading Frisco Lone Star HS to a 10-2 record and District 13-5A championship.

SafetiesThe Wildcats return Brandon Richmond,

who missed significant time last year due to injury, as well as Bolu Onifade. Those are the only two returning safeties – outside of Moore, who has moved to linebacker – who have played the position in college.

The Wildcats also added Texas transfer Erik Huhn during the summer.

Coach Jackson: “This position is much the same as cornerback. We'll have some competition throughout the summer, but the jury is still out.”

Player to Watch: Brandon Richmond played in all 11 games as a freshman in 2015, but was limited to just three games in 2016 because of injuries. His healthy return could be a key to how the secondary plays in 2017.

rom the first day of spring training, new ACU defensive coordinator Tremaine Jackson has preached physicality and turnovers. Each day on the practice field, you could hear him bellowing, “I don’t care how we did it here in the past; it’s a new day!” You can't blame Jackson for focusing on turnovers. In three seasons as the defensive coordinator at Sioux Falls (2014-16), his defenses allowed just 19.5 points per game and forced 100 turnovers. Sioux Falls was 32-5 in those three seasons and advanced to the NCAA Division II playoffs in each of those three seasons. In the last three seasons, ACU’s defense has allowed an average of 32.4 points and 452.3 yards per game and has only taken the ball away 55 times, including just 13 takeaways last season. In their last 22 games (11 games in 2015 and 11 more in 2016), the Wildcats have allowed at least 40 points in a game eight times, four times in each season. Still, Jackson does have some pieces to work with, led by senior middle linebacker Sam Denmark, who enters the season just 63 tackles away from becoming ACU’s all-time leader in that category. Also, senior Bryson Gates makes the move from outside linebacker to defense end, and senior Royce Moore moves from safety to linebacker to provide some pop in the front seven. Coach Tremaine Jackson says: “We need to improve in all areas to be brutally honest. But my expectations for our defense entering the season are very high. We set a standard of play in the spring and summer that I'm eager to see come to fruition. The first thing we must improve on is leveraging the ball. We had a hard time understanding where to fit against blocks and keep the proper leverage on the ball." n

enior placekicker Nik Grau returns to the Wildcats for his fifth and final season, and he does so as the only returning specialist on the 2017 roster. The Wildcats graduated a four-year punter in Austin Kilcullen, as well as holder Parker McKenzie and three-year deep snapper Hayden Brodowsky, leaving ACU in the unenviable position of having to replace three key pieces of the special teams unit. Grau, however, is one of the top kickers in the Southland Conference, having earned first team all-conference honors at the end of the 2016 season and first team pre-season all-conference recognition to start the 2017 season. Unlike past year, the Wildcats won’t have one special teams coach. Instead, it will be “special teams by committee” in terms of coaches as linebackers coach J.B. Brown will coach the punt block / punt return teams, wide receivers coach Ryan Gent will handle the punt team, defensive line coach Blake Andersen will handle the kickoff team, fullbacks / tight ends coach Derron Montgomery will be in charge of kickoff return, and volunteer assistants James Curlee and Mat Newton will coach the field goal teams.n Special Teams Notes

Senior PK Nik Grau returns for his senior season with a chance to finish as ACU’s all-time leader in field goals made and second in career PATs made and attempted and in career kicking points. ... He enters the season fourth in ACU history with 37 field goals (Morgan Lineberry is the all-time leader with 50), and he's third in PATs (124) and attempted (130) behind Matt Adams (213 for 222) and Lineberry (140 for 154). ... He's third in career kicking points with 235 (Adams with 339 and Lineberry with 290 are first and second, respectively), and he's sixth in all-time scoring with those 235 points. ... all-conference punter. ... The Wildcats will return WR / KR Justin Miller, who averaged 21.7 yards per kickoff return in 2016 and scored on a 93-yard kick return at Stephen F. Austin on Sept. 24. ... Freshmen deep snappers Andrew Toothman and Houston Hance will compete with Chance Rieken for the job as the Wildcats’ deep snapper.

Wildcats in Season-Openers ACU will open the season against an opponent from the Mountain West Conference for the third straight season when the Wildcats take on the Lobos of New Mexico in Saturday night’s 2017 season-opener. The Wildcats lost to Fresno State, 34-13, in the 2015 opener and dropped a 37-21 decision at Air Force in the 2016 lid-lifter. ACU is 45-46-4 all-time in season-openers with three straight losses. Prior to those three straight losses, the Wildcats had won six straight openers dating back to the 2008 season when the Wildcats beat Northwest Missouri State in both 2008 (44-27 in Maryville, Mo.) and 2009 (19-14 in Abilene). The offensive coordinator for both of those Northwest Missouri State teams was current ACU head coach Adam Dorrel. ACU has played Texas A&M-Commerce 13 times in season-opener, the most games against any opponent in season-opening games in program history. The Lions lead the series against ACU, 7-6, in openers, although ACU leads the overall series against its old NCAA Division II rival, 40-27-1. The season-openers don’t get any easier in the years following the 2017 season as the Wildcats are scheduled to open the 2018 season at Baylor and then follow that with openers at North Texas (2019), SMU (2021), Kansas State (2022) and Texas Tech (2024 and 2026).

ACU Head Coaches in First Games

ACU’s previous 19 head coaches are 11-8 in their first games as the Wildcats’ head coach with previous head coach Ken Collums having beaten McMurry, 51-0, in 2012 to snap a three-game losing streak by coaches in their first game as the ACU head coach. Those coaches who have recorded wins in their first games are Vernon McCasland (1919), Sewell Jones (1920), Tonto Coleman (1942), Garvin Beauchamp (1950), Nick Nicholson (1956), Wally Bullington (1968), Dewitt Jones (1977), Ted Sitton (1979), John Payne (1985), Dr. Bob Strader (1993), and Collums (2012). Those who took losses in their first game are Russell Lewis (1921), Victor Payne (1922), A.B. Morris (1924), Les Wheeler (1962), Ronnie Peacock (1991), Jack Kiser (1996), Gary Gaines (2000), and Chris Thomsen (2005). Saturday night’s game will be the first time an ACU head coach has opened his career as the Wildcats’ leader against a team playing at the highest level of college football.

ACU Now Fully Division I

ACU has completed its move to full NCAA Division I status and is now eligible for all NCAA and Southland Conference postseason tournaments After a vote by the Division I Board of

directors, the NCAA on Aug. 24 delivered the news to ACU president Dr. Phil Schubert and director of athletics Lee De León, concluding a four-year transition from Division II that pushed the Wildcat athletics program to membership in the top tier of intercollegiate athletics. Since their first season competing at the D-I level in 2013-14, the Wildcats have won four regular-season Southland titles (women’s cross country in 2015, women’s basketball in 2015-16 and 2016-17, and men’s tennis in 2017) and have earned wins over established Division I programs such as Arizona (baseball), Texas Tech (volleyball, women’s basketball and

softball), Texas-El Paso (women’s soccer), Iowa (softball), Texas-Arlington (baseball and softball), New Hampshire (men’s basketball), and Oklahoma State (women’s basketball). The women’s basketball team has reached the Postseason Women’s NIT each of the last two years and played in the Preseason WNIT in 2016-17, and last season the softball team qualified for the National Invitational Softball Championship.

all-Southland Conference middle linebacker Sam Denmark is just 63 tackles away from becoming ACU’s all-time leader in tackles. Denmark enters the 2017 season with 326 career stops (Ryan Boozer is the all-time leader with 388 from 1998-2001).

Sealey Returns to Lead Offense Junior quarterback Dallas Sealey eturns as the Wildcats’ starting quarterback after finishing second in the Southland Conference in passing yards per game (277.3) and in total offense per game (302.0). Second in league in completion percentage (61.1) and fourth in total passing yards (2,773). Tied for third in touchdown passes (19). Sealey is set to break into the top 10 in the following career categories in 2017: attempts, completions, touchdown passes, passing yards, and total offense. He enters the 2017 season with 3,597 yards passing while completing 320 of 526 passes (60.8 percent) in his career.

Brown Chasing Down Record Book ACU senior running back De’Andre Brown – who appears to be fully recovered from a leg injury that plagued him throughout the 2016 season – should rank in the top 10 in ACU history in carries, yards and touchdowns by the end of the season if he can replicate what he did in 2014 and 2015. Brown enters his final season with 366 carries for 1,956 yards and 16 touchdowns in his career. He is 10th all-time in carries, and he’s just 103 yards from passing current Kansas City Chiefs running back Charcandrick West for 10th on the all-time yardage list (West finished with 2,058 rushing yards from 2010-13), and he’s six touchdowns away from tying three others (Kelly Kent, Jimmy Hirth and Taber Minner) for 10th on the all-time rushing touchdown list with 22.

Grau On Pace for More Records Senior PK Nik Grau returns for his senior season with a chance to finish as ACU’s all-time leader in field goals made and second in career PATs made and attempted and in career kicking points. He enters the season fourth in ACU history with 37 field goals (Morgan Lineberry is the all-time leader with 50), and he’s third in PATs (124) and attempted (130) behind Matt Adams (213 for 222) and Lineberry (140 for 154). He’s third in career kicking points with 235 (Adams with 339 and Lineberry with 290 are first and second, respectively), and he’s sixth in all-time scoring with those 235 points.

ACU vs . FBS Opponents The ACU Wildcats are 1-3 vs. FBS opponents since making the move from NCAA Division II to NCAA Division I affiliation prior to the 2013 season. The Wildcats played two FBS games in 2014, dropping a 38-37 heartbreaker to Georgia State in the season-opener for both teams in the Georgia Dome, and then beating Troy, 38-35, two weeks later in Troey, Al. Two seasons ago the Wildcats went to Fresno, Calif., and dropped a 34-13 decision to Fresno State. And last year the Wildcats went to Colorado Springs, Colo., and lost the Air Force Falcons, 37-21. Prior to 2014, the last time the Wildcats had beaten a team playing at the highest level of

college football had been in 1959 when the Wildcats went to El Paso and knocked of Texas-El Paso, 28-22, on Nov. 14. ACU’s most frequent FBS opponent over its history is Texas Tech with nine games having been played between the two West Texas schools. The Red Raiders lead the series, 6-3, although the teams haven’t played a 20-0 Tech win in 1949. ACU’s wins came in succession in 1927 (6-3), 1928 (7-0) and 1929 (7-3). The Wildcats and Red Raiders are scheduled to renew their series with two games in Lubbock in 2024 and 2026.
