MAC PROFILE The Middle Atlantic Conference has undergone considerable change with the departure and subsequent addition of a number of colleges over the past eight years. In 2007-08, Arcadia University and Manhattanville College joined the MAC while Alvernia University, Eastern University, and Misericordia University joined in 2008-09. Stevenson University became a member in 2011-12 while Hood College entered its first year in the MAC in 2012-13. In 1992, the MAC reorganized into two divisions - the Freedom Conference and the Commonwealth Conference. Each champion under the MAC umbrella receives an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III national tournament, creating more national opportunities for MAC schools. In football, however, the MAC currently consists of 10 teams but Alvernia is adding football for 2018. All MAC teams are required to play nine games against conference opponents, while rounding out the schedule with one non-MAC opponent. The MAC champion receive an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III National Playoffs. The current overall MAC structuring is as follows:

KING’S ATHLETIC FACILITIESWILLIAM S. SCANDLON PHYSICAL EDUCATION CENTER

Since 1993, King’s student-athletes train and compete at the Robert L. Betzler Athletic Complex. More than 33 acres of land include fields for baseball, football, softball, soccer, field hockey, and lacrosse. McCarthy Stadium, King's multi-purpose synthetic turf field, was used for the first time in 2008-09. Currently, King's is nearing completition of its brand-new eight lane track and field facility. Plans are underway for additional rennovations to the facility, including an expanded field house, a new press box at McCarthy Stadium, a press box for the softball field, and a new concessions/merchandise facility which will include seating at the top level. The Betzler complex is conveniently located near several hotels and restaurants, while standing one-quarter mile away from the Mohegan Sun Arena.

In December of 2007, King’s unveiled the brand-new Inter-Metro Wellness Center, complete with a top-of-the-line weight room. The two-story facility was built as a new addition, extending from the front of Scandlon Gymnasium. The first floor consists of free weights where strength training will be done. The second floor houses a wide variety of fitness equipment. The King's football team has always been renowned for its outstanding weight program. With a new and improved facility complete, the Monarch weight-training program has been elevated to an even higher level.

ROBERT L. BETZLERATHLETIC COMPLEX

The William S. Scandlon Physical Education Center was built in 1968 and is one of the largest multipurpose athletic facilities in Northeastern Pennsylvania. The Center is a two-story structure which houses a 50-yard swimming pool, handball and racquetball courts, a wrestling room, batting cages, the Intermetro Wellness Center, and the Robert McGrane Basketball Arena. The facility is also utilized by high schools within the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association for events such as district or state competition in basketball, swimming, and wrestling. Outdoor basketball courts and a three-level parking lot complete the athletic center. In September 2012 King's opened its new recreation complex as part of the Scandlon Gym Expansion Project. A new sports medicine facility was built, the addition of new team rooms, and offices, as well as the installation of new bleachers in the McGrane Arena which will seat 2,550 people. The new addition to Scandlon Gym nearly doubles the size of the facility.

KING’S COACHES PROFILEStallying 30.8 points in 2008. Muhlenberg led the Centennial Conference in scoring offense in 2007 and were second in 2008. Knarr also gained a reputation as the Muhlenberg special teams coordinator. His 2001 punt return unit ranked 19th in NCAA Division III and his 2002 squad returned five punts for touchdowns. In 2003, the Mules blocked 12 kicks and ranked in the top 25 in Division III in both punt returns and kickoff returns. Knarr is an experienced recruiter and has successfully landed players in many of the areas King’s has attracted student-athletes from over the years, having recruited numerous areas of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Maryland, Delaware, Connecticut, and northern Virginia. A 1987 graduate of Notre Dame High School in Easton, Knarr was a two-time Centennial Conference selection as a Easton Express Times all-area choice as a senior. He continued his education at Fordham University where he played two years as a free safety. He eventually transferred to Western Maryland College where he played his final two years as a hybrid outside linebacker. He later earned a bachelor of science degree from East Stroudsburg University in 1994 and served two years as an assistant coach under Denny Douds while completing his degree in education and sports management. From 1995-98, Knarr served as the head football coach at his alma-mater – Notre Dame High School – where he also taught physical education, accounting, and sports management, prior to his arrival at Muhlenberg in 1999. Knarr, who currently resides in Easton, is married to his wife Katie. The couple have two children, daughter Megan (19) and son Jake (16).

On February 11, 2010, Jeff Knarr was named the new head football coach at King’s College. Knarr came to King’s after serving 11 years as an assistant coach at Muhlenberg College in Allentown where he spent the previous four years as offensive coordinator

whi le serving as the program’s quarterbacks-receiving coach and recruiting coordinator since 2001. Knarr has brought a more balanced run-pass philosphy to King's. The passing game has especially improved during his time as the majority of the team's passing and receiving team and individual records have been established during his time with the Monarchs. During his time at King's, Knarr has produced 26 All-MAC selections as well. His teams have also thrived in the classroom as 143 of his players have been named to the MAC Academic Honor Roll since 2010. Two earned Academic All-American honors while eight have been named to the National Football Foundation's Hampshire Honor Society. As the offensive coordinator/recruiting coordinator at Muhlenberg, Knarr was instrumental in helping the Mule program to six Centennial Conference championships and five NCAA Division III National Playoff berths, including berths in 2007 and 2008. He joined the Muhlenberg staff in 1999 where he served as the defensive line coach for two seasons. In 2001 he became the Mules’ recruiting coordinator, ultimately helping Muhlenberg develop into one of the top programs in the Centennial Conference. During his 11 years at Muhlenberg, Knarr helped the Mules to a combined 78-40 record, including a 49-19 mark in Centennial Conference games. In addition, Muhlenberg won or shared six Centennial Conference championships and earned five berths into the NCAA Division III National Playoffs in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2007 and 2008. The Mules also played in two Eastern College Athletic Conference bowl games during his tenure. In 2001 Muhlenberg, ironically, played King’s at McCarthy Stadium where the Monarchs won a 32-29 thriller. Muhlenberg also posted a 26-22 win over King’s cross-town rival Wilkes in the 2000 ECAC Southwest Bowl. In Knarr’s four years as offensive coordinator at Muhlenberg, the Mules averaged 24.8 points per-game. During his first three years heading the Mule attack, Muhlenberg displayed great improvement in points per-game. The Mules averaged 13.8 points in 2005 but improved to 20.5 points during his first season running the offense in 2006. The team continued to improve, scoring 29.7 points in 2007 before

He was also named the Aggies’ Team Rookie MVP in 2005, helping Delaware Valley to the ECAC championship that same season. While at Delaware Valley, Cebrosky started 42-of-45 games, missing three games due to injury. He was a D3Football.com “Player of the Week in 2008. A 2011 graduate of McDaniel College, Fultz was a four-year player and three-year letter-winner with the Green Terror. He played predominantly at tight end but saw time at wide receiver and played on a number of special teams. After earning a Bachelor of Science degree from McDaniel in 2011, Fultz began his coaching career at Susquehanna University where he served as a tight ends and special team assistant coach. He gained additional experience in recruiting, film cut-up, and with the Hudl Film Editing System. He is a graduate of Upper Dauphin High School in Elizabethville, Pa.

school-records during his time at King’s, including career pass completions (448), career passing yards (5,943), career touchdown passes (36), and single-game passing yards (408). Hartranft served as a team captain as a senior at King’s and was a 2014 Capital One Academic All-District selection as well as a three-time MAC All-Academic choice. 2017 SEASON PREVIEW The King’s College football team will look to get back on the winning track under eighth-year head coach Jeff Knarr. After going 5-5 overall and 5-5 in the Middle Atlantic Conference in 2016, the Monarchs are looking to take a step forward and emerge as a contender. Last season the Monarchs unveiled a new, fast-paced, no huddle offense that reaped immediate results. The team set numerous school offensive records during its first year of implementation. With a year under its collective belt in the books and a number of skill-position players returning, the Monarchs expect to be even more dynamic in 2017. The Monarch defense did suf fer a few key losses but return e ight s tar ters and severa l other players who were in the defensive rotation. The following is a pre-season position-by-position look at the Monarchs as they entered training camp August 10. The Quarterbacks Offensively, King’s will be led by senior quarterback and team co-captain Zach Whitehead (Hockessin, De./St. Mark’s) who enters his second year as a starter. Whitehead’s first year under center proved to be a happy marriage with King’s new offensive scheme. Whitehead set several new school marks during the season, including completions (244), passing yards (2,832), and passing touchdowns (19). A mobile dual-threat, Whitehead also rushed for 502 yards and scored 12 more touchdowns on the ground. The Monarchs do not have a returning back-up so freshmen Gabe Bocella (Aston/Sun Valley), Jonathan Toye (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon), and Carlos Ventura (Falls Church, Va./J.E.B. Stuart) will all compete for the role. The Running Backs King’s running game suffered a blow when leading rusher Alvonte Thompson’s family relocated to Washington state and the sophomore standout was unable to return to King’s. The Monarchs do not return a single running back who took a varsity snap last season and the position will be manned by inexperienced returnees and newcomers. Returning players looking to fill the void are sophomores Zayjay Colon-Carrero (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah), Derek De La Cruz (Paramus, N.J./Paramus), and junior Jordan Downes (Magnolia, De./Caesar Rodney).A promising crop of newcomers will add contenders at the position. Sophomore transfer Titus Nelson (Newark/Smyrna) and freshmen Elijah Walton (Wilmington, De./Conrad School) are also expected to battle for a spot in the backfield rotation.

The Receivers King’s returns an excellent crop of receivers and has added a few talented newcomers. Senior Tyler Marroni (Wilmington, De./Salesianum) comes off a big junior year in which the 6-foot-4 standout posted a career-high 53 catches for a team-leading 749 yards. Fellow senior Marquis Miller (Reistertown, Md./Franklin) also had his best year with 45 receptions for 428 yards. Senior Corey Flynn (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) added 24 catches for 217 yards. Devin Ringler (Cashtown/Gettysburg) is a 6-foot-5 sophomore who played special teams last year but gained experience on King’s junior varsity squad. Sophomore Janyer Gorospe (Hackettstown/Morris Catholic) and freshman Tim Costantino (Easton/Notre Dame-Greenpond) could also factor into the mix. The hybrid H-Back position will be sound with the return of senior Trey Campbell (Gratz/Upper Dauphin), who made 15 receptions for a 15.1 yards per-catch average. Sophomore C.J. Curry (Berwick/Berwick) moves over

from outside linebacker but is an outstanding athlete expected to make an easy transition, having been a former quarterback and two-way player in high school. Sophomore Justin Wenner (Berwick/Berwick) is also back.

The Offensive Line The King’s offensive line will have some holes to fill with the loss of three starters. Anchoring the unit is senior and two-time team co-captain Ron Ippolite (Woolrich Twp., N.J ./Kingsway Regional) who has started the last two years at center. Sophomore Brian Olesen (Ocean, N.J./Ocean Township) started nine games at guard last year and adds critical experience on a youthful unit. S e n i o r J o n Rauch (Plantsville, Ct./Southington) and junior Ben Bakanas (Maple Shade, N.J./Maple Shade) were second on the depth chart last year while sophomores Denis Kennedy

(Ridley Park/Ridley) and Daniel Lare (Lansdale/North Penn) will also contend. Newcomers looking to step in include junior Tyler Irwin (Langhorne/Neshaminy), a 6-5, 350-pound transfer from Lackawanna; junior Brennan Walsh (Great River, N.Y./St. Anthony’s), a transfer from Division II Pace University; and freshman Joe Parker (Harrisburg/Bishop McDevitt).

The Linebackers King’s defense graduated one of its all-time top defensive players as three-time All-MAC selection Bobby Russell departs after recording 290 tackles. The unit will be led by

King's senior center Ron Ippolite is a two-year team co-captain and was an All-MAC selection last season.

2017 SEASON PREVIEWanother tackle-machine in senior co-captain Bruce Damon (Reistertown, Md,.Franklin) who led the Middle Atlantic Conference last season with 118 tackles while adding 12.5 tackles for loss. Sophomore Cory Wilson (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) was second on the two-deep last season with hopes of moving up a slot while junior Josh Burkavage (Honesdale/Honesdale) also adds experience. One newcomer expected to make an impact is Mando Sallavanti (Old Forge/Old Forge), who transferred to King’s from Division II East Stroudsburg University in January. A former Pennsylvania all-state selection who led Old Forge to the state semi-finals as a senior. Sallavanti redshirted as a rookie at ESU and maintains freshman eligibility. The Defensive Line The Monarchs return two of three defensive line starters. Back for one last season are seniors Jacoby Foresman (Muncy, Pa./Hughesville) and Chris DeGaetano (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame) who both started at defensive end. Foresman has started the last two years and made 42 tackles with two sacks a year ago. DeGaetano finished fourth on the team with 54 tackles. Senior Mike Dohn (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) saw his role increase as the season progressed and posted 22 tackles at both the end and nose-guard slots. Junior Devrin Baynard (Magnol ia , DE/Caesar Rodney) also saw time at both positions and added 17 tackles. Senior end Aaron Vascos (Sicklerville, N.J./Winslow Township) also adds experience. Junior Malcolm Johnston (Manchester, Md./Hereford) was second on the two-deep last year at linebacker but moves to defensive end in 2017. Sophomore Joseph Damiano (Tamaqua/Marian Catholic), another former first-team all-state selection and East Stroudsburg University transfer, is one newcomer expected to contribute. Freshman Izuchukwu Mozie (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains Fanwood) will also contend. The Secondary King’s secondary is arguable the deepest and most talented group in years. The Monarchs return seven-of-eight players from the 2016 year-end two-deep. King’s is headed by senior safety and team co-captain Jake Manetti (Old Forge, Pa./Old Forge).Manetti has played in all 30 games the Monarchs have contested during career, making starts in 20 straight. Last season Manetti was third on the team with 69 tackles with two interceptions. Senior cornerback Justin Foster (Plainfield, N.J./Bound Brook) is back after starting seven-of-ten

games last season and has played 29 contests at the corner. Sophomore cornerback Eli Vascos (Sicklerville, N.J./Winslow Twp.) started five games last season and played in all 10 contests while making 24 tackles. Sophomore safety Joe Davis (Warrington, Pa./Archbishop Wood) started seven-of-ten games and posted 44 stops. Sophomore safety Trevor Hill (Wilmington, De./Delaware Military Academy) played in nine games and posted two interceptions in Kings Mayor’s Cup win over rival Wilkes. Sophomore cornerback Kody Stevens (Dover, De./Polytech) played in the last seven games and had one start. Sophomore Mikal Butler (Downington/Downingtown West), and freshmen Elijah Demosthene (Pomona, N.Y./Spring Valley), Jake Fries (Bangor/Bangor), Gene Gibbons (Ridley Park/Ridley), Jaret Horn (Old Forge/Old Forge), and Kevin King (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright). Senior Hassan Maxwell (Pittston/Pittston Area), a three-year starter at linebacker,

moves to the new rover position. The Special Teams King’s kicking game will see new starters on both sides of the ball with the graduation of three-year placekicking starter Mikhail Kniaziewicz and Eric Haenggi, a four-year starter at punter. Senior Mike Tumminello (Bellcamp, Md./Archbishop Curley) has gone-4-for-4 in extra points during his career but has never attempted a field goal. Freshmen Bryce McElhiney (West Chester/Henderson) is also battling for a spot. King’s return game will see a few new faces as senior Marquis Miller is the only returnee. Miller had 10 kickoff returns for 164 yards and returned nine punts for 53 yards. No other returning player returned a kickoff as a back-man. The Schedule The Monarchs open the 2017 season with a first-ever Thursday night game when King’s plays host to

Centennial Conference rival Moravian College. The Monarchs then open their MAC schedule at defending champion and NCAA playoff qualifier Stevenson. After another conference road game at Lebanon Valley, King’s hosts traditional MAC contender Lycoming on Homecoming, September 23. Another top MAC foe ventures to Wilkes-Barre the following week when Albright visits King’s. The Monarchs will then have another set of back-to-back away games, the first at local rival Misericordia, and then at league power Delaware Valley. After an off week, King’s hosts FDU-Florham before traveling to perennial league contender Widener for its final road contest. The Monarchs then wrap up the season at home against cross-town rival Wilkes.

Senior co-captain Jake Manetti is entering his third year as a starter at safety and has played in 30 straight games.

Last year King's won the Mayor's Cup with a 42-14 victory over Wilkes as junior quarterback Zach Whitehead was voted the team Most Valuable Player. Whitehead received his award from Monarch coach Jeff Knarr (L) and King's President Reverend John Ryan, C.S.C.

One of the great small college football rivalries in the country exists between King's College and crosstown foe Wilkes University. Separated by only three blocks, the two neighboring Wilkes-Barre colleges began playing for the Mayor's Cup in 1996. Each year, the two teams battle in the trenches with community and college bragging rights at stake as the victor takes possession of the beautiful silver trophy for the course of the next year. The trophy will be presented to the winning school by Wilkes-Barre Mayor Anythony George at the conclusion of the game. While the competition is fierce, both programs own great respect for the other and the postgame ceremonies reflect the class exhibited by both teams. Each squad lines up at their respective 40-yard lines for the presentation of the Mayor's Cup. One player from both King's and Wilkes is then selected as their team Most Valuable Player of the game with a plaque presented to each player. The colleges once played for the William Pearce Trophy, which was retired in 1950.

King's College and crosstown rival Wilkes University annually play in the Mayor's Cup Game with the victor assuming

possession of the cup for the next year.

THE FATHER PATRICK SULLIVAN AWARD

In September 2014, King's instituted the presentation of the Father Patrick J. Sullivan Award. The award honors Father Sullivan, C.S.C., a Holy Cross Priest, a community leader for the working family, a professor of sociology, and the former King’s College Sociology Department Chairman during the 1960’s. Father Sullivan was an essential leader in the development and growth of the greater King’s College community.

King’s College was founded to educate the sons of miners who worked in the coalfields of Pennsylvania. Father Patrick Sullivan truly personified the King’s mission. He championed the cause of hard-working men and women and fought for fair treatment of working families.

Known affectionately as “Sully” by those he mentored and supervised at Hafey-Marian Hall, Father Sullivan also combined fairness and compassion with discipline when dealing with those in his charge. This award was established through the efforts of former King’s football players, many of whom lived at Hafey-Marian Hall during Father Sullivan’s tenure.

The award is presented to a junior or senior member of the football team who has a strong moral compass, demonstrates hard work, discipline, and leadership as a member of the King’s College football team, and who reflects the stated values of the greater King’s College and Holy Cross communities.

The choice of a junior or senior is done with the intention that the recipient has been and will continue to be an example to those who follow, and that the award-winner may assist in developing a worthy recipient for the successive year. The input of teammates, football coaches, Holy Cross Religious, and the athletic department will be considered, and the head football coach will make the final selection. The award is presented annually before the King’s College Homecoming football game.

The first winner of the Sullivan Award in 2014 was senior defensive back Kris Matthews. The 2015 winner was senior linebacker Chad Curtice, who was a two-year starter. The 2016 winner was senior defensive back Tyler Mejasic.

King's senior Tyler Mejasic received the 2016 Sullivan Award from head coach Jeff Knarr, King's President Father John Ryan, C.S.C., 2015 winner Chad Curtice, and the Friends of King's Football prior to the 2016 Homecoming Game

KING’S INTERN COACHING PROGRAM The King's College football program has not only afforded Monarch student-athletes an opportunity to play collegiate football, it also has opened doors for recent college graduates to embark on coaching careers of their own. Beginning in 1992, former collegiate players have joined the King's football program as intern coaches where they learn the many different aspects of the profession. Interns are given ample opportunity to grow with such responsibilities, as position coaching, recruiting, film review and campus tours and visits. After a year of intense experience at King's, each intern has successfully gained the skills necessary to move on to the next level of coaching. Since the program's inception, every intern has secured a high school, graduate assistantship, or collegiate coaching position, upon completion of their duties at King's.

King’s weight room and fitness center stands as one of the finest in small college athletics. Five full rack stations with platforms allow players to perform squats, power cleans, and dead lifts with the best equipment possible.

Among the massive 25,000 pounds of free weights in the weight room are 6,000 pounds of dumbbells. The dumbbell racks run almost the entire length of the front portion of the weight room and constitute two levels.

Among the vast array of weights and weight training equipment in the room are eight Hammer Strength Units. King’s incline bench press program has a proven track of greatly increasing the strength of Monarch players.

The upper floor of the facility houses a large number and variety of cardiovascular machines where players can not only improve or maintain their conditioning, but rehabilitate effectively should an injury occur.

KING’S QUICK FACTS
