Today we gratefully honor the accomplishments of seniors and their residential service coordinators and celebrate GFM’s progress towards its mission to enrich lives. Diana Gregory’s Outreach Services (DGOS) is dedicated to the health, nutrition, and fitness of all Arizona seniors. More than 7,000 seniors residing in independent living facilities in the Greater Phoenix area have been served by GFM. You do make a difference!

GFM directly addresses the health disparities confronting under-resourced communities. We do it primarily through our mobile produce market, which operates in senior communities lacking easy access to healthy food. And our holistic approach also includes community organizing, advocacy, and education to increase senior awareness and acceptance of healthy food choices. Please join in congratulating this year’s honorees and their commitment to impacting communities. Leader, university president, visionary. Lattie F. Coor, Ph.D. Is a person who has always loved Arizona. Dr. Coor was born in Phoenix, the son of elementary educators in Avondale, where a school is named after his father. He received his undergraduate degree with honors from Northern Arizona University in 1958. Graduate school took him to Washington University in St. Louis, MO where he earned his Master’s and then Ph.D. in Political Science in 1964.

Dr. Coor became an assistant to the governor of Michigan and returned to Washington University to serve in several capacities, including that of University Vice Chancellor. At 39, he was named president of the University of Vermont where he served from 1976 until 1989. The Arts and Sciences Administration Building has been named for him in recognition of his many accomplishments there.

In 1990, he returned to his beloved Arizona as president of Arizona State University. His leadership and vision led the way for ASU to be named a Research I university by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in 1994. A capital campaign under Dr. Coor’s leadership raised more than $500M, creating the opportunity to expand university programs and campuses. He believes that his most valuable achievement while at ASU was improving the quality of undergraduate education. In 2004 ASU built the Lattie F. Coor Hall on the main campus in his honor.

In 2002, he retired as president of ASU and is now President-Emeritus, Professor and Ernest W. McFarland Chair in Leadership and Public Policy, an honor he is especially proud of.

Arizona Blue Cross/Blue Shield and other community-based organizations and businesses have welcomed his involvement in the Phoenix area, and he has built many enduring relationships through his activity with them and has received many awards as a reflection of his efforts from such diverse groups as the Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Greater Phoenix Urban League, American Jewish Committee, Anti-Defamation League, and the Phoenix Community Alliance.



Volunteer, communicator, optimizer, campaigner. And more. Arizona native, Elva Wingfield Coor grew up on a dairy farm and ranch in the Verde Valley. “There”, she shares, “I learned the value of hard work and the power of people working together as a team to get things done.” She has been a team-builder ever since!

While attending Arizona State College in Flagstaff and Arizona State University, she became involved in politics, working for U.S. Senator Barry Goldwater. She co-chaired the Arizona committee for his presidential campaign, then organized get-out-the-vote campaigns for congressional, gubernatorial, and city council candidates. Along the way, she formed a friendship with now-retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice, Sandra Day O’Connor (a fellow cowgirl).

A divorce and raising three wonderful children led Elva to become the founder and CEO of messaging and communications businesses over 20 years, and eventually selling them prior to her marriage to then ASU president Lattie Coor. She was then charged with finding ways to bring the university and greater Phoenix together, leading to development of a project to increase the African American graduation rate, and the President’s Community Enrichment programs. That helped pave the way for the first major fundraising campaign at ASU and from which new projects evolved.

Known as the “optimizer,” she is credited with an ability to handle projects and shape their success. For example, she led the founding of O’Connor House that saved Sandra and John O’Connor’s adobe home from demolition. Working with the Justice, she formed Speak Out Arizona, which has evolved into engaging businesses, faith communities and individuals in community building to stimulate

volunteerism in schools while connecting elementary schools with resources needed to ensure children graduate from 8th grade ready for high school.

She served on committees such as the Phoenix Art Museum, Center for New Directions, Maricopa County Merit Commission, and the International Women’s Forum. Currently, she serves on several non-profit boards including the Central AZ Chapter of the AZ Historical Society, AWEE, Charter 100, AZ Chapter of Women Business Owners, Learning Disabilities Institute as well as local and national trade organizations, including being a member of ASU’s Women and Philanthropy.

Perhaps we should add the word “humorist” to describe Elva Coor, too. When she and Justice O’Connor were once asked to share their “cowgirl wisdom”—some created, some borrowed:

• Think big, work hard, and just do it.

• It isn’t the majority that rules. It’s the majority of those who show up.

• It’s better to keep one’s mouth shut and look stupid than open it and prove it.

• Ride like the wind; never look back. If you ain’t making dust, you’re eating it.

• And finally, don’t squat with your spurs on.

With a desire to give more back to his native state, Dr. Coor founded the Center for the Future of Arizona in 2002. As chairman and CEO, he leads a multi-year statewide effort to create a citizen’s vision for Arizona. The report, entitled, The Arizona We Want, based on the Gallup Arizona Poll, sets forth eight goals that Arizonans want in their future including education, job creation, civic engagement, and community involvement. “Our Center’s mission is to ensure we all commit to making it happen,” states Dr. Coor.

Lattie Coor and his wife, Elva, continue their love affair with Arizona through hiking, horseback riding, and cycling. In August 2008 they completed the 814 mile Arizona Trail from Mexico to Utah.


Resolve, faith, and a strength uncommon to most and admired by many. These words barely begin to describe Dr. Donald R. Campbell.

One of nine siblings, he was born in Elizabeth, Louisiana, and his family moved to Arizona in 1945. At an early age , Campbell lost both his parents. When he was a teenager, he worked to support himself, saving enough to earn an associate degree from Phoenix College. Later, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a Masters degree in Education from Arizona State University. Yet, he didn’t stop there. Continuing his graduate education at Arizona State University, Dr. Campbell received his Doctorate degree in Business Administration. Alongside these accomplishments, Dr. Campbell became the first African American to enlist in the Arizona Air National Guard and after 26 years retired as a Lieutenant Colonel from the United States Air Force.

These accomplishments are part of the picture of this man. There’s more to share about his awards and strong community presence:

• His community work spans over 15 years with the Arizona Project Challenge, a program under the auspices of the Arizona Air National Guard.

• He sat on several community boards including Roosevelt School District.

• Dr. Campbell was elected to the Governing Board of the Maricopa County Community College District in 1982 and served for 29 years as a board member.

• Dr. Campbell is a life member of the NAACP as well as an active board member for the Maricopa County chapter.

• Residing in South Phoenix, he volunteers with Mentor Kids USA at a local elementary school.

In addition to his work in the community, Dr. Campbell’s faith has always kept him involved with his local church, Southminster Presbyterian Church. Now a widower, he was married for 54 years to his wife, Doris. Together they suffered the loss of one son, Derek, when he was 13; later, a second tragedy struck the family when their other son Darren also passed away.

Dr. Campbell’s interests include traveling and not missing his daily workouts at the gym. In 2009, he authored a book entitled Tough Life? So What! A Memoir of One Man’s Achievements. Who could be more fitting to write it? Only a person with resolve, faith, and a strength uncommon to most—Dr. Donald R. Campbell.

Character, commitment, and engagement—to the community and to the nation. These words only begin to describe what Gregory Melikian stands for. The son of Armenian immigrant parents who fled the massacre of Christians during the Ottoman Empire to make a better life, Gregory Melikian’s own life showcases his own commitment to people across the globe.

In 1944-45, during World War II, he served as a telegraph radio operator and a young sergeant in France under General Dwight David Eisenhower’s command. It was Melikian who was chosen to announce the unconditional surrender of Germany and the end of World War II in Europe—at 3:30 a.m. on May 7, 1945. The original copy of the telegraph was donated by the Melikians along with ten other messages to the Arizona State University libraries.

Returning from war, he completed a law degree, enjoyed a successful career in real estate law in New York City, and became a civil night court judge there. In 1969 he and his wife of sixty four years, Emma Ordjamian Melikian, moved to Arizona. He helped the small Armenian community establish the Armenian Community Center, called Melikian Hall, of the

Armenian Apostolic Church of Arizona. The Melikian family continue to play a large role in the Armenian community throughout the southwest.

Gregory Melikian founded the commercial real estate firm, Great Western Realty, and devoted himself to the purchase and restoration of over a dozen historic properties in Arizona, including the iconic Hotel San Carlos in downtown Phoenix.

He also served as a board member of the Phoenix Symphony and Channel 8 KAET, and as president of the Arizona Opera Company in the 1980s. Additionally, he served as honorary commander of the 56th and 944th Fighter Wings at Luke Air Force Base for four years.

A generous benefactor of education and the arts, he established the Melikian Center at ASU (which all four of his children attended) in 1984. The Center serves as home for ASU’s Critical Language Institute and supports language training for those who may travel to dangerous places to train soldiers and foster understanding between cultures. The Center also supports a grant for a women’s leadership project in Armenia. In 2014, the formal opening of the Washington, DC office of the ASU Melikian Center took place. It provides language training and research relevant to United States national security in collaboration with the Department of Defense.

Among a multitude of civic and military honors and achievements, two especially stand out: In 2012, he received the highest decoration given in France—he was inducted as “chevalier” (knight) into the French Legion of Honor. Accepting the award, he said, “It is in honor for all veterans, especially those who did not make it home.” In 2013, he received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, given to those whose inspiration and achievements touch the lives of people everywhere. Well deserved.


LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

GENERAL GREGORY MELIKIAN (Ret)



Dancer, singer, and entertainment legend. All who have known him unanimously agree: Arthur Duncan was born to dance.

Often referred to as an “entertainer’s entertainer”, he performed in concert at both Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. His charm and talent captivated audiences at a time when tap dance was fading from Broadway and Hollywood. And he brought the art form to a brand new medium, allowing Americans across the nation to experience tap dance in their own homes through the wonders of television.

His television credits include guest appearances in Diagnosis of a Murder with Dick Van Dyke, Columbo with Peter Falk, The Phil Donohue Show, The Betty White Show, as well as being a regular on the weekly Lawrence Welk Show—for an incredible 18 years. Additionally, he performed in Las Vegas and was a featured personality in the movie Tap starring Gregory Hines and Sammy Davis, Jr. He toured with Tommy Tune in the Broadway show My One and Only and joined Bob Hope on several USO tours. Mr. Duncan even danced a high-spirited tap in a McDonald’s commercial.

While living abroad, Arthur Duncan spread his sophisticated footwork and wonderful songs all over Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Australia, always giving a stunning and dazzling show to his audiences. He is also a dedicated mentor and shares his spotlight experiences through lecture demonstrations and master tap classes.

It is little wonder that he was honored with the 2004 Flo-Bert Award for Lifetime Achievement of Tap Artistry in New York City, the 2005 Living Treasure in American Dance Award from Oklahoma City University, and an Honorary Doctor of Performing

Arts degree in American Dance from OCU as well.

On July 21, 2011, Arthur Duncan received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Chicago National Association of Dance Masters—joining the ranks of an elite list of only three individuals who have received this rare honor in the association’s hundred-year history.

One of the most entertaining performers of today, his seamless blend of song and dance continues to contribute significantly to the artistic legacy of dance and entertainment. He is a “dancing man” who continues to leave his footprints on the sands of time.

He sings a song while dancing, “Don’t mean a thing if you ain’t got that swing.” He certainly has it!

ONECare by Care1st Health Plan Arizona, Inc. is a Coordinated Care plan with a Medicare contract and a contract with AHCCCS (Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System) in Maricopa and Pima Counties. This plan is available to anyone who has both Medical Assistance from the State and Medicare. Enrollment in ONECare depends on contract renewal. Hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week from October 1 through February 14. After February 14, your call will be routed to our after-hours service on weekends and holidays.
