Dear Hockey Fans:On behalf of our coaching staff I would like to thank you for supporting the WNS Storm in the 2018-19 season. This year the Storm is being represented by the following schools: Whitefish Bay, Shorewood, Nicolet, Milwaukee Rufus King, Martin Luther, Milwaukee Lutheran, Dominican High School and Milwaukee High School of the Arts.

My coaching philosophy is simple: first and foremost, playing hockey should be a fun, positive experience. Secondly, the program should be based on skill development and physical fitness. Therefore, a player must learn to skate, shoot, and stick handle. In preparing for games more simple drills will be performed at high speeds and with precision; exhausting players with too many complex drills can prove to be counter-productive to building confidence and proper execution. Hockey commands hard work, discipline, respect for one’s self and others, and teaches the player what it means to be a part of a team. A positive team atmosphere can increase player confidence, self-esteem, and help the player create deep and long lasting friendships.

We believe the integrity and long lasting traditions of WNS Storm hockey will be continued and built upon throughout this upcoming season.

Sincerely,

Coach Eric Murano had a long and successful career as a hockey player. He was Vancouver’s 4th pick, 91st overall in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft but chose to attend the University of Denver where he played for 4 seasons and graduated BSBA. After graduating from the University of Denver in 1990, Coach Murano went on to a twelve-year professional hockey career in North America and Europe. He has coached almost every year since retiring from hockey in 2002, including 3 seasons coaching high school hockey.

Eric, his wife Annette and their family moved to Whitefish Bay from St. Louis last year. Their son Alec graduated from Whitefish Bay in 2015 and their daughter Brianna graduated in 2017. Their son Dominic is a sophomore. Coach Murano is looking forward to the opportunity of coaching WNS hockey.

Coaching Staff:

Samuel Aschliman is in his first year of coaching with WNS. Sam Graduated from Whitefish Bay High School in 2013 and was a member of the WNS program for two years. He was on the team that were conference champions and Section 7 champions. Sam played Division III golf for

three years and club hockey for four years in his time at Carthage College.

Jordan Johnson had a tremendous career as a hockey player. He played for Hill-Murray high school in Minnesota where he played in four consecutive State Tournaments. He was signed with the Fresno Monsters in the NAHL where he played two seasons, and finished with

the Springfield Jr. Blues. Coach Johnson attended Hamline University where he played Division III college hockey. In 2013, he found a passion for coaching, while he was with Minnesota Made. This will be Johnson’s second season with WNS.

RECOVERY & PERFORMANCE

Cryotherapy speeds muscle recovery, accelerates injury healing process, increases energy and enhances performance. In 1978 it was first developed performance. In 1978 it was first developed in Japan specifically to treat rheumatoid arthritis. With its proven success it was realized it could be used to treat the inflammation and pain of other joints and muscles throughout the body. The treatment works like an ice bath.

HISTORYWhitefish Bay/Nicolet/ Shorewood

The BeginningTurn back the clocks to the early 1990’s;the only high school varsity hockey teams in Southeastern Wisconsin were private schools like USM, Marquette and Pius, with just Arrowhead and Brookfield fielding public school programs. Most of the 40 or so high school teams competing in the WIAA were from the "hotbed" for hockey in the Madisonarea and squads from the northern part of the state. Rinks were also scarce as Wilson Park, USM, and State Fair Park were the only facilities around.

It was February 1992 when families like the Orchards, LeGrands, and Jaglinskis founded the Whitefish Bay Hockey Club as a place for their high school aged skaters to play organized hockey after youth programs and as a step up from the pond at places like Stormonth School.

Founded and coached by Jack Orchard, the first year club scrounged together a seven game schedule with makeshift uniforms and some late night practices at State Fair Park (before Pettit opened). But that was a village club with no tiesto the school. The next season, Whitefish Bay High School gave it official club recognition.

The 25 team members - 19 from Whitefish Bay, five from Nicolet and even one from Homestead paid about $400 each for the privilege of playing a high school schedule. That season the coaching was turned over to Raffaealle Sacripanti, a former Wisconsin Badger player who also played Juniors and in Europe. Raff, as he was known by his players and friends, led the team to a successful record of 17-3-3 in only its second year of existence playing primarily JV teams like Sheboygan, Manitowoc, DePere and Brookfield. The club suffered its most heartbreaking loss of the year without playing a game when Coach Raff lost his fight with cancer at the age of 28, just after the end of the season.

WIAA High School Team FormedIn 1993, the program took another step forward as the team formally became a varsity interscholastic sport. The arrangement with the school board was that boys hockey would be self-funded through fees and fundraising. Jack Orchard continued as head coach with a new addition, Brad Bark, joining the staff as an assistant. An interesting coincidence, Bark and Raff played against each other representing their youth hockey teams of Winter Club and the Kenosha Komets respectively. In those early years the program had a rigorous varsity schedule, playing many of the best teams in the region including Marquette, Fond du Lac, and Catholic Memorial. A JV team was added in the mid-1990’s.

Co-op Teams AddedThe 1996-97 season saw the start of a new era with Shorewood HS formally joining as a co-op team. Nicolet entered the scene in 1998, Brown Deer followed a few years later, and then followed by Dominican. Now, WNS is a co-op that represents the public schools in the North Shore. Many of the players have come up through the ranks of the Winter Club youth program. There was also a growth in high school hockey in the area when rinks in Waukesha and Ozaukee Counties were established. Ice time was at a premium, and the team practiced very early in the morning and late in the evenings at Ozaukee, Pettit, and USM. In the early 2000’s the team’s home games were held in West Bend. The team has been privileged to call the MSOE Kern Center its home rink for practice andgames since it opened in 2004-05. In 2016, our co-op expanded to include Milwaukee Lutheran, Rufus King and Martin Luther schools.
