Rights and Responsibilities St Margaret’s College believes in educating the whole person and Sport is an important vehicle through which students will learn life skills and have key values reinforced. St Margaret’s College Sports Awards

Senior Sport – Years 11-13

Colours

This is the highest achievement in sport at St Margaret’s College and it allows the selected students to purchase and wear the Red Blazer. This Honours Award (Colours) is for girls in Years 11-13 who have performed to an outstanding level in their sport in top College competition, given service through coaching and/or promoted their sport through their actions as role models to younger students and ambassadors while representing St Margaret’s College. The criteria listed below are guidelines only and the awarding of Colours is not automatic. Guidelines specific to the individual codes are available from the Sports Department and are in addition to the general criteria listed below. Colours are presented twice during the year for Year 13 and for Year 9-13 at the annual Sports Dinner. Recipients of Colours must: § Represent St Margaret’s College in their recognised sport for a minimum of TWO full seasons § Give service to sport through coaching, umpiring or active promotion and administration § Be recognised by associated coach(es) and sports personnel at St Margaret’s College as

outstanding performers in their sport § Gain provincial, regional or national representative selection at secondary schools’ level or

above (normally Under 18) § Be recognised by appearance and behavior at practice, in competition and around the College

as a true role model for younger students § Be an ambassador for St Margaret’s College at all times § Performance and service to sport at a previous school will be taken into consideration

Pockets

Pockets are awarded to students in Years 11-13 for achievement in their chosen sport. This is a patch that is worn on the Pocket of the school blazer. A Pocket must be earned before consideration is given to the awarding of Colours. A high standard of athletic achievement is required – with some individual codes such as Athletics and Swimming, a specific time or distance is required to be achieved consistently. In team sports, coaches ‘rank’ students on their ability and contribution to the team.

Middle School Sport – Years 7-10 Year 7-10 students have the opportunity to gain Middle School Badges for excellence in sporting performance while representing St Margaret’s College. An exceptional sports girl who has gained this recognition can then apply for Middle School Colours in Years 9 and 10. The Middle School Colour is recognised with a red band on the green blazer.

Consideration is given to a student who:

§ Displays exceptional athletic performance as part of the top selected ‘Senior’ St Margaret’s College team that gains top results at National or Provincial level.

§ Achieves outstanding results while competing and representing St Margaret’s College in an individual sport

Red Roses Red Roses are awarded at Assemblies to girls who have been placed 1st or 2nd in a New Zealand Championship event in the highest grade of competition available to them.

Sports Dinner The annual Sports Dinner is held in late October every year to celebrate and acknowledge the achievements of student athletes and coaches. This is the major Sports Awards evening that is open to students from Years 7-13 and their parents and family members.

Sports Committee The role of the Sports Committee is to maintain standards and comparability amongst the various sports and activities and to make decisions re awarding of Colours, Pockets, Middle School Colours and Badges. The Committee revises or amends sporting achievement criteria. Proposals and ideas can be forwarded to the Convenor of each sport to be discussed by the Sports Committee. The Committee reserves the right to make decisions where it considers exceptional circumstances are involved.

‘Sign Up / Registration’ will be held on Thursday 1 February in the Gymnasium from 3.00-4.00pm for Term 1 Summer Sport and Winter Codes.

Term 4 Sport will have a further sign-up at the end of Term 3.

Numbers of girls ‘signing up’, availability of teachers and/or other adult support at venues or with teams could determine whether the sport goes ahead in any one season.

Most sports are played on Wednesday unless stated.

The selectors may request that trial matches are played to determine positions. NB These and other factors will be considered by the selection panel using their experience and expertise in selecting individuals to form a team which, in their opinion, best fulfills the aim of achieving the objectives for that team. Other Year 9-13 teams – these girls may play with a group of friends or as determined by the Tennis Convenor

Training Expectations and Venues: Senior A, B and C players are expected to attend

coaching sessions with Andrew Falck on a Tuesday morning from 6.45-7.45am and on a Thursday at lunchtime. They are also required to commit to a fitness programme as supported by SMC.

Year 1-6 players can be committed to the Hot Shots Programme and will have coaching sessions once a week in Term 1 and 2.

If sufficient numbers Year 7 and 8 players will be able to have coaching sessions with SMC Head Coach during a Friday lunchtime in Term 1 and 4

Competition Games: All Year 9-13 teams compete in the School Sport Canterbury competition on a Wednesday afternoon at various locations throughout Christchurch. Players can compete in championship play in Term 4
