2 chain snatchers held withhelp of CCTV footage

By Our Staff ReporterTwo chain snatchers, one of whom followed a woman and

dragged her for a distance before escaping with a part of her 2-sovereign chain in T. Nagar, were arrested with the help ofCCTV camera footage.

The two were identified as Dinesh (21) and Kumar (20) ofNungambakkam, owner of the vehicle used in the crime. Policeare on the lookout for the rider, Madan.

Police said Dinesh and Madan were habitual offenders in-volved in chain-snatching incidents in Chetpet, Egmore andKilpauk.

Their latest victim was Devi (42), a sanitary worker in aprivate company who was on her way to work at 6.30 a.m onApril 5. Police said that on Thirumalai Pillai Road a man ridingpillion on a scooter got down and followed the woman. Thesequence, caught on camera, showed Dinesh, wearing a blueshirt, following Devi with Madan waiting at a distance.

Police said Dinesh grabbed her chain and ran towards thescooter, but Devi held on to it and ran along with him. AfterDinesh mounted the scooter, Devi was dragged along the roadfor a few seconds. The two sped away after the chain broke.Devi, who got no help as the stretch was deserted, sustainedinjuries in her neck and was admitted to a private hospital.

With the help of footage from another CCTV camera, policetraced the vehicle. They nabbed Dinesh and Kumar and arelooking for Madan.

Snake Park to conduct5-day campBy Our Staff Reporter

Chennai Snake Park will conduct a 5-day summer camp forstudents who have completed Class 10 from April 16. Eachbatch will have 20 students. Individuals who are interested canalso participate, according to Park Director Rajarathinam.

Natural history of reptiles and interactive sessions, wildlifehealth monitoring in the snake park, snakebite management,film screening, visit to Guindy National Park and a quiz pro-gram will form part of the course.

Experts in the field of herpetology will interact with theparticipants and answer their questions, Rajarathinam said.

Participants have to pay a registration fee of Rs. 500. Thecourse duration will be three hours a day. The park will providecourse kit and refreshments. Transport will have to be ar-ranged by participants themselves.

After the camp, the participants will become ‘zoo educators’for the snake park and can visit the park free of fee 50 timesa year. They will also be allowed to educate visiting childrenabout the park and the reptiles housed there. They will also geta certificate.
