Smart City project to take offby August-endBy Our Staff Reporter

The Smart City project in T. Nagar is likelyto commence in a month. According to anofficial, tenders have been called for and workon the projects is expected to start by the endof August.

T. Nagar, which was selected in 2015 underthe area based development program of theCentral Government-sponsored Smart CitiesMission, will undergo a slew of infrastructuralchanges as the civic body takes up the projectphase by phase.

In its first phase, 23 interior roads in the areawill receive a makeover costing Rs. 15 croreswhich includes wi-fi connectivity, rain waterharvesting pits that would collect run-off wa-ter and recharge the ground water table, smartlamp posts, wide footpaths, parking areas anda walkway fitted with anti-skid tiles. Eight T.Nagar parks will be redeveloped at a cost of Rs10 crores and Rs. 3.5 crores will be spent onreplacing sodium vapour lamps with LEDlights. Other major developments include con-struction of a multi-level car parking lot andthe pedestrian plaza.

Traffic fines to become cashlessPenalty for traffic violations will soon go cashless as police personnel

will be given card swiping machines to enhance the existing handhelde-challan equipment.

Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami announced in the Assem-bly on July 7 that Rs. 6.42 crores had been sanctioned to buy e-challanequipment with swiping facility for traffic police in the city.

Gold recovered fromChennai Silks debris

By Our Staff ReporterAbout 400 kg. of gold jewellery has been unearthed from the

debris at the fire ravaged site in Usman Road, T. Nagar, whichhoused Chennai Silks and its subsidiary, Sree Kumaran ThangaMaligai.

According to the owners of Chennai Silks, the safety lockerin the basement designed to withstand natural calamity ormajor fire had jewellery and gold weighing 400 kg. and diamondsworth Rs. 20 crores.

After the removal of the debris on July 11, the locker was cutopen with a gas cutter.

The staff of the showroom entered and retrieved the gold andornaments in the presence of the owners and officials of aninsurance company. Armed police personnel provided secu-rity.

While some jewellery had melted, many pieces were stillintact as they were stored in a vault.

HC orders action against illegalT. Nagar constructions

The Madras High Court has ordered the authorities con-cerned to take appropriate action against illegal constructionsin T. Nagar area and submit its report by July 28.

The first bench of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and JusticeM. Sundar, initiating proceedings on a PIL, directed variousauthorities to take appropriate action against the illegal andunauthorised constructions in and around T. Nagar.

In this regard, the authorities should follow the guidelines laiddown by the earlier first bench headed by the then Chief JusticeSanjay Kishan Kaul, on October 7, 2016.

The bench also issued notices to Secretary (Housing andUrban Development Department), CMDA, Commissioner ofChennai Corporation, Chennai City Commissioner of Police,besides Director of Fire and Rescue Services, who had beenimpleaded as the latest party in the proceedings.

Officials of Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (Southern Region)rescued around 12 parakeets from an illegal trader in T. Nagarlast week.

According to T. Uma (Deputy Director), they had comeacross an online portal offering parakeets for sale.

The officials, pretending to be prospective buyers, asked thetrader to show a specimen.

Year on, sailor’s wife stillawaits husband’s deathcertificateBy Our Staff Reporter

Almost a year has gone by, and a sailor’s wife is still waiting forher husband’s death certificate from Chennai Corporation.

39-year-old Muthu Krishnan (a resident of CPWD Quarters, K.K. Nagar), employed in Indian Coast Guard (ICG)), lost his life inthe mid-air disappearance of an Indian Air Force plane he wastraveling in on July 22 last year. The plane could never be tracedand all aboard the flight were declared dead by IAF and ICG andthe same was communicated to the families.

His wife Jeya Sumithra has since been running from pillar topost to get her husband’s death certificate from Chennai Corpo-ration.

“Although the ICG had issued a death certificate for my husband,Corporation officials are refusing to issue one based on it, withoutdetails such as the place of his death. They are citing rules that itcannot be issued for missing persons until a period of 7 years haselapsed,” she said.

She has been facing several problems like not being able toapply for a Smart Card to replace the paper-based family card asthe PDS Dept. is not accepting the death certificate issued by ICG.

Similarly, she had a harrowing time in getting the legal heircertificate from the Tahsildar’s office in Mambalam.

KalamSat, a 64 gm. tinysatellite designed and devel-oped by a group of students inSpace Kidz India (ThirumalaiRoad, T. Nagar), was launchedby NASA on June 22.

Dr. Srimathy Kesan (Direc-tor, Space Kidz India) was themission director.

The KalamSat team waspresented the ‘P. A. InamdarYoung Achievers’ award onJuly 10 in Maharashtra Cos-mopolitan Education Society,Pune.

Srimathy told MambalamTimes that in the payload inthe small spacecraft are 5gm.each of fig, basil and sunflowerseeds.

“We exposed them to amicrogravity environment andwe want to assess its impacton them. We also want to seethe impact of cosmic radiationon these seeds”, she said.

She said that NASA will bebringing back the satellite soonand after that the process ofdecoding the data will begin.

TCF provides wigs free of costto economically disadvantagedwomen and children who expe-rience hair loss while undergo-ing treatment for cancer or dueto alopecia.

Valsa told Mambalam Timesthat hair loss is the most ap-parent physical sign of the ef-fects of medication used to treat

cancer and is also a major causefor depression in cancer pa-tients.
