Rains, delay in approvals worrycracker shop owners

A cracker shop owner in PrakasamStreet, opposite Panagal Park, T. Nagar told this reporter that he gotthe license to open the shop only on Nov. 1 with only a 5-day windowbefore Deepavali on Nov. 6.

Added to that, the heavy rains in the last couple of days and theSupreme Court order on timed celebration with firecrackers havefurther affected sales, he said. He said that in earlier years, they couldset up shops a month in advance. But this year the sale rights have toget clearance from five departments.

Sewage line damaged in PostalColony 2nd Street

While digging a trench to connect the storm water drain in PostalColony 2nd Street, West Mambalam, Metrowater workers damaged thesewage pipes and EB cables. Since then sewage water has beenoverflowing and stagnating in the street posing a health hazard tonearby residents and pedestrians.

Gets award for service todifferently-abled

K. Gopinath (a social worker and resident of 103rd Street, 14th Sector,K. K. Nagar), who is physically challenged, was presented ‘Sevarathna’award by Exnora Greater Chennai last week for his social serviceactivities. He is the State General Secretary of TamilnaduUdavikkaram Association for the Welfare of the Differently-Abled.

The award was handed over by N. Krubakaran (Madras High CourtJudge). Senior Exnora members including M. B. Nirmal (JointSecretary) were present at the function. Gopinath has been workingfor the welfare of the disabled for more than three decades. He arrangesfree physical aids like tricycles, artificial limbs, wheelchairs, hearingaids and more for poor and deserving persons.

He also conducts vocational and job-oriented training programs forthe disabled and helps them to get employment or set up their ownbusiness. He has received several awards in the past, including the‘Best Social Worker’ award from Tamilnadu Government in 2008.

veillance of bigcrowds ofDeepavali shop-pers expected todescend on T.Nagar, police per-sonnel on patrolduty have beenprovided withcamera - f i t t edjackets.

The cameras in the jacketsare integrated with the exist-ing network of 750 CCTV cam-eras.

The handing over was inau-gurated by A. K. Vishwana-than (Police Commissioner) onOct. 28 in Mambalam police

station. The cameras are equipped with GPS, high-beamtorchlight and reinforced pockets to keep walkie-talkie andtracking system.

The sensors in the jacket will start the camera the momentit is worn and transmit the live feed to the monitoring station.

4 police assistance booths are functioning in the junctionof Duraisamy Road and Usman Road, and near T. Nagar busterminus. 5 watch towers equipped with binoculars have beenerected on Ranganathan Street, Usman Road and PondyBazaar.

Metrowater tanker driverscan no longer divert watermeant for residential use tocommercial establishments,thanks to Metrowatermanagers who have introduceda one-time password (OTP) for‘dial for water’ and ‘dial for septictank clearance’ for customers.

Those who book for wateronline or request theMetrowater to take up cleaningof septic tanks, will now get apassword as a text message ontheir phone. When the driver ora worker comes home, you haveto share the OTP before whichthe service will be delivered.

The password will begenerated at the time ofbooking and sent to the personalong with the booking number.Metrowater will also keep trackof bookings to avoid repeat andout-of-turn bookings.
