Rs. 12,000 burgled from 2 shopsin Ashok Nagar

By Our Staff ReporterBurglars broke into two shops in 12th Main Road, Ashok

Nagar and took away Rs. 12,000 in cash and CCTV camerasfrom one of the shops on Dec. 18 night.

They first broke into a medical shop on 12th Main Road andburgled Rs. 8,000 cash and the CCTV cameras installed in theshop, and later Rs. 4,000 cash from a tailor shop on the sameroad.

According to the police, the thieves also took away thecomputer in which the CCTV recordings were stored.

Ashok Nagar Police are investigating the cases.

Residential buildingsdemolished to make way

for parking lotsSeveral residential properties on streets adjoining Usman

Road, T. Nagar have been demolished to make way for parkinglots in the busiest shopping area in the city.

While a few are maintained by big showrooms for customers, most are operated as paid parking lots. While some residentsof the area said that this helps bring down haphazard parkingon streets, others alleged that the parking lots violateddevelopment rules of the Chennai Metropolitan DevelopmentAuthority (CMDA).

About 20 parking lots have come up on 10 streets betweenthe bus terminus and Duraisamy Road junction on UsmanRoad, most of them in the last two years.

As several big showrooms in T. Nagar area do not haveparking lots on their premises or have inadequate parkingspace, some have converted residential properties into parkinglots after demolishing existing structures though they may bea little distance away. These

parking lots sport the names of the showrooms.Private parking lots mostly accommodate two-wheelers on

an hourly basis. However, T. Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association alleged

that such facilities operating in residential zones for commercialpurposes violate laws. Though it claimed that the land use mapof CMDA clearly classifies a majority of the streets in T. Nagaras residential zones where commercial activities cannot bepermitted, a CMDA official clarified that reclassification ofzone is not required for utilising premises in a residential zonefor commercial parking lots.

Sir, Sri Vadamadura Kannan Temple lo-cated in Postal Colony 3rd Street, WestMambalam is under the administrative con-trol of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endow-ments Department (Govt. of Tamilnadu).

It has not been functioning for more than 20years.

Tribute to late K. BalachanderSir, Chennai reverberates with Carnatic

music in December/January each year formargazhi season. This year too, Sabhas arevying with one another to line up the top mu-sicians to present a sumptuous musical treatfor the rasikas.

Like all other Sabhas, Mudhra too has beencontributing to this rich tradition in its ownhumble way in Infosys Hall (RamakrishnaMission School, T. Nagar) for several years.

Besides organising concerts by veterans inthe field, it also encourages new talents andadds different varieties and thus provides awholesome treat to the rasikas. Though mostconcerts have tickets for entry, a few freeconcerts are also conducted.

On Dec. 16, it organised a special musicaltribute to the veteran Film Director, Late K.Balachander. Hit songs from his select movieswere presented by Ganesh-Krupa, the lesser-known twosome, who, it is said, were the in-separable companions of the late director.

Excellent song selection and delightful ren-dering by the experienced singers were thehallmark of the evening. In all, it was a lovelyevening and the audience was left spellboundby the performance and a trip back in time. V.S. Jayaraman, Motilal Street, T. Nagar

Long queues outside HanumarTemple, Ashok Nagar

Sir, There are few Vaishnavite temples inAshok Nagar.

The Hanumar Temple witnesses long queuesfor darshan which increase many fold onauspicious days. It would be a great service ifsome religious organisation or Good Samaritansconstruct a temple for Vaishnavites which willgo a long way in easing crowds thronging thenegligibly few temples in a 5-km. radius. Stray dog menace inWest Mambalam

Sir, Of late, stray dog problems are on the risein residential areas in West Mambalam.

They roam in packs on the streets frighten-ing the public, especially during night and earlymorning. They often squat in groups on pave-ments thereby blocking the way for pedestri-ans. Their incessant barking at night disturbsthe sleep.Hence I request the authorities con-cerned to take immediate action to capture thedogs and relocate them. R. Swaminathan,West Mambalam

Delay in issue of smart cardsSir, After hectic follow-up and submission of

various documents again and again, I finallyreceived an SMS informing that I could collectthe smart card from the ration shop. When Iwent to collect the card, I was told to come inthe first week of next month.

When I told the shop assistant about thereceipt of the message, I was told that thedistribution of cards had been suspended inview of the by-poll in R. K. Nagar and were stillto be received from the office.

I do not understand why the distribution ofthe cards should be stopped since it is an on-going process. K. Harihar, T. Nagar

Appeal for mobile connectivity inunderground metro section

Sir, I regularly travel by metro rail fromAshok Nagar to Shenoy Nagar.

There is still no mobile connectivity in theunderground section between Thirumangalamand Nehru Park, which was inaugurated inMay. Chennai Metro Rail Limited had assuredmobile connectivity within 3 months of launch, but it is still not available.

As per recent media reports, CMRL hasinstalled signal boosters which are being tested.

Today, mobile is the best medium of contactin case of emergency, and CMRL should takeimmediate steps to implement it in the under-ground section without further delay.

In case of any untoward incident in theunderground section, mobile is the best way tocommunicate instantly. R. Bhargav, 10thAvenue, Ashok Nagar

Reprieve for AirtelBy Our Staff Reporter

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) hasallowed Bharti Airtel to conduct eKYC verification for itstelecom subscribers till Jan. 10 with stiff riders but maintainedits ‘suspension’ order on Airtel Payments Bank.

Airtel, India’s largest telecom company with 282 millionsubscribers, got the temporary reprieve with conditions afterRs. 138 crore Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) was repaid into55.63 lakh original accounts of its customers, sources said.

The second interim order to this effect has been passed byUIDAI keeping in view convenience of customers and also theMarch 31 deadline given by the Supreme Court for mobile SIMre-verification.

The authority will take a view on the issue after it receivesa report from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the TelecomDepartment on Jan. 10.

UIDAI had earlier prohibited Bharti Airtel and the AirtelPayments Bank from conducting eKYC e-verification for exist-ing and new customers.

This followed allegations that the telecom major had surrep-titiously on-boarded customers to its bank while carrying outtheir Aadhaar verification.

The issue of unauthorised linkage came to the fore when thegovernment’s social-sector subsidy linked to LPG cooking gaslanded in the Airtel Payments bank accounts of many custom-ers. The customers cried foul and said that they had not evensigned up for Airtel Payments Bank account.
