Artificial aquifer for maintenance of Chennai Metrocoaches

Chennai Metro will create an artificial aquifer to store excesswater and use it during shortage to maintain its 42-train fleet.

To create the recharge well, it has employed consultants to doa hydrological study inside its Koyambedu complex where themaintenance depot is located.

An official said, “artificial aquifers are like water storage units, but we will not build pumps or tanks. We will store excessgroundwater whenever available instead of letting it evaporateand use it during water shortage.”

Chennai Metro uses nearly 1.5 lakh liters of water every dayfor washing the trains and for its air-conditioning system in itsadministration building where the operation control center also

functions. At present, an official said, much of the water supply

is from metrowater through pipelines, tankers andfrom a nearby pond. A sewage treatment plant with acapacity of 75,000 liters/day set up inside the campusis being used for gardening and cooling towers for theair-conditioning systems.

In two months, the capacity of the sewage treat-ment will be doubled (1.5 lakh liters a day), as nearly75,000 liters of sewage is released from the housingquarters accommodating around 100 families. Thetreated water will also be used in the toilets.

Fire safety audit should be mandatory forcommercial establishments

Sir, It has been reported that Sculpt Design Consultants hasbeen appointed by the Chennai Metropolitan DevelopmentAuthority (CMDA) to prepare a detailed project report on thefire safety management system in the commercial hub of T.Nagar.

The possibility of making fire audit compulsory for everyshop and building, and developing a system of fire volunteersfor all buildings in T. Nagar will also be explored. This develop-ment comes in the wake of non-compliance of fire safety normsby shops/establishments.

While one welcomes the system of putting every shop/commercial establishment in T Nagar under compulsory fireaudit, the outcome of such fire audit must be made public.Besides this, the shops/commercial establishments should beordered to take corrective measures and, in case of any defaultin carrying out the measures suggested in the audit, strictaction should be taken.

Every shop/establishment must exhibit the fire safety com-pliance certificate in a prominent place in the shop. In view ofthe fact that the Fire Department does not have the power totake action against errant shops/establishments except issu-ing showcause notices, it should periodically send feedback tothe enforcement agencies such as Corporation and CMDA.

Further, the Fire Department should conduct surprise in-spections to ensure that the fire safety systems are in workingcondition. K. Harihar, T. Nagar.

Delay in Metrowater taxrevision notice affects

residentsSir, The demand notice is-

sued by Chennai MetrowaterSupply and Sewerage Boardon Feb. 14 consequent to theincrease in property taxes, wasserved on the residents in ourapartment complex on Feb. 27.

The shocking part of it wasthere was a rubber stamp af-fixed in red stating ‘Pay beforeFeb. 28’. I was out of town onFeb. 28, and promptly paid onmy return on March 1. How-ever, I was charged Rs.5 aspenalty for late payment.

When the demand noticedated Feb. 14 was served onlya day before the due date, howis it fair to impose a penalty, however small the amount maybe?

I appeal to Metrowater offi-cials to extend the last date toMarch 31 before charging pen-alty. P. K. Subramanian,Aishwarya Apartments,Gandhi Street, T. Nagar, Ph:98402 93321

Baby boy abandoned in trainSir, On March 8, a 3-month-old baby boy was found lying in

a 1st class compartment of a train at Tambaram Station bytwo college students (both residents of T. Nagar).

They informed the Railway police who checked with otherstation masters to find out if any complaint regarding a missingbaby had been registered. But as there was no complaint, theytook care of the boy and handed him over to Childline officials.

Abandoning a child is a heinous crime whatever the circum-stances. Anybody caught after abandoning a child should beseverely punished. Dr. Chidambarakumarsamy, 40, 53rd

Street, Ashok Nagar.

Garbage dumped inRaja Bather Street

Sir, The margin of RajaBather Street, near Dr. NairRoad junction has become adumping place for garbage.Passers-by have also con-verted the spot into an openurinal.

The foul smell and the unhy-gienic condition pose a healthhazard to the residents livingnearby. It has also led to prolif-eration of mosquitoes.

I appeal to Corporation offi-cials to take action. Satheesh,T. Nagar, Ph: 90947 63733

Abrupt increase in property tax affects manySir, The abrupt increase in property tax has affected many,

especially senior citizens.Though the govt. had announced that the revision will not

exceed 50%, in several cases it is gone up by 11 to 15 times. Theresidents who have appealed against the revision are stillwaiting for replies from the officials concerned. The govt. shouldhave gradually increased it over the years, instead of a one-time sudden increase, thereby burdening the property owners.

I appeal to the officials concerned to have a re-look at therevision and ensure that no one is made to pay more than 50%of the existing rate.N. Rajagopalan, West Mambalam
