“And even as they did notlike to retain God in theirknowledge, God gave themover to a reprobate mind, to dothose things which are not convenient; Being filled with all
unrighteousness…” (Romans 1: 28-29)Many years ago when an awful storm hit New Orleans, some mis-
guided preachers started proclaiming that it was God’s judgmentupon that city for its wickedness. I caution folks who say such thingsto be careful for two reasons:
#1. Because someone might be saying the same thing aboutyou when hardship touches your life.
#2. Because God’s judgment is not always in overtly punishingsomeone for sinning.
Sometimes God’s judgment for sin is just allowing the person toproceed in and be captivated by the sinful course of life that they desire. In other words, the punishment for sin is not lightning boltsbut living in and being captive to one’s own sinful desires.
When the verse above says God gives them over to a reprobatemind, it means He is turning them over to their sinful choices andthe consequences. They end up “being filled with unrighteousness.”(vs.29) Proverbs 1:31 says, “Therefore shall they eat the fruit of theirown way, and be filled with their own devices.” Broken homes, diseased bodies, and devastated lives are often the result and Goddid not have to do a thing except withdraw His resented hand.
