National Certified Nurses Day and National Doctors’ Day March 27 & 28

Along with healthcare organizations coast-to-coast, NewYork-Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital recognized its Board Certified Magnet nurses and distinguished physicians with back-to-back celebrations in the Main Lobby on Wednesday, March 27, in honor of National Certified Nurses Day, and Thursday, March 28, in appreciation of National Doctors’ Day.

National Certified Nurses Day acknowledges the dedication of nurses who seek Board Certification, affirming their leadership, advanced understanding of nursing, and overall

commitment to care. National Doctors’ Day celebrates our physicians’ commitment to their patients and community at large. We are proud to recognize these distinguished

professionals and offer continued support to them.

Lunch with Lisa April 10

Left to right: Chef Emilie Berner; Stacey Petrower, President, Dr. Himani Chandra, Endocrinology; Lisa LaRocca, News 12 Westchester reporter.

News 12 reporter Lisa LaRocca visited the Chef Peter X. Kelly Teaching Kitchen on Wednesday, April

10th to prepare lunch recipes particularly focused on diabetes, heart health and cancer. These culinary

creations were featured on Lisa’s series Lunch with Lisa on Wednesday, April 24th, which focuses on local

cuisine in the Hudson Valley. The Chef Peter X. Kelly Teaching Kitchen strikes the balance between

healthy and delicious, proving that there is no need to compromise on flavor to eat nutritiously.

Savory dishes included marinated Asian salmon, gingered carrot and cabbage slaw, spring veggie pasta

and creamy avocado pesto, while spiced, toasted almonds and chocolate avocado mousse rounded out

the menu with a sweet touch. All recipes were developed to reflect good nutrition and a link to diabetes

health. A link to each recipe can be viewed at News12.com.

The Golden Spoons program kicked off at NewYork-Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital in October 2017. Volunteers visit patients and feed those who are not eating due to loss of appetite or weakness. Whether the volunteer is able to feed someone completely, partially, or not at all, their presence and interactions with the patients stimulates socialization, reducing the feeling of isolation that often presents itself. Currently, there are seven individuals who volunteer their time to serve those in need. They have received training based off adaptations to NewYork-

Presbyterian Allen Hospital’s successful program. Since January 2019, over 98% of patients received social support, nearly 25% being totally fed and

another 27% being partially fed.

On Tuesday, May 14th, the City of Peekskill marked the launch of “Cooking for Health” at the NYPHVH Chef Peter X. Kelly Teaching Kitchen.

Carmen Azurin, Director of Clinical Laboratory Services, explains lab functions to students.

Dr. Craig Hametz.

And, on April 11th, we welcomed science students and teachers from Hendrick Hudson High School back for a program on cardiac disease and rehabilitation.

The focus added to their studies, and speakers, including Cardiologist, Dr. Craig Hametz, Cardiac Rehab Manager, Deborah Petranchik, and Director of Clinical Laboratory Services, Carmen Azurin, shared insights about career paths in medicine. With the help of his sonographers from NYP Medical Group Hudson Valley – Frank Selca and Kirsten Roldan - Dr. Hametz explained the procedure of an echocardiogram, a test that uses ultrasound to create pictures of your heart, and demonstrated medical findings in real time. The students also had the opportunity to tour the hospital’s Lab with Carmen Azurin, Director, and team, and the Cardiac Rehabilitation facility. It was a fun and educational day for all!
