The candidate’s answers show comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the facts, concepts and principles in the curriculum. He/she demonstrates proficient skills in questions related to scientific investigation, such as understanding the design of a novel set-up, proposing a valid hypothesis for the findings and suggesting a method to test the hypothesis (Paper 1B Q.6); analysing results and providing data to support an argument (Paper 1B Q.8); and synthesising an explanation for a phenomenon from the information and data provided (Paper 1B Q.7). He/she is also able to solve problems set on both familiar (Paper 1B Q.1, Q.2, Q.3, Q4, Q.6 and Q.10) and unfamiliar situations (Paper 1B Q.5, Q.8 and Q.9) competently. In the essay type question (Paper 1B Q.11), he/she is able to select relevant knowledge and use scientific terminology to communicate ideas effectively and provide a clear and logical presentation.
