2020 TERRITORIAL SKILLS COMPETITION
54 – Photography - Secondary
Date: February 27th, 2020 Location: Dawson City, YT – Robert Service School Duration of Contest: 6 hours (including lunch)
CONTEST INTRODUCTION Each photographer will shoot and present a portfolio of six photos (including portrait retouch) throughout the duration of the competition in the designated area, using the materials provided.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE TO BE TESTED
• Composition- visual elements, style, balance and harmony, framing, Depth of Field; • Technical- focus, exposure, contrast, use of light, tonal range; • Impact- overall impression of the photograph, tells a story, the emotion conveyed; • Respect of the theme, collection, and instructions. Allotted time 6 hours
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Part 1: Mystery Object Photography
• The competitor will be challenged to create two photographs with no preparation or foreknowledge of the subject.
• One mystery item will be supplied to each competitor at beginning of the day. • The photographs will each contain the mystery item as either the subject or major
contributing element to the photographs. • The photographs may be edited using Lightroom or Photoshop. • The final photographs must be 3000 pixels on the longest edge and submitted in
JPEG. • Keywords for this assignment are last name, part1, mystery 1. • Photographs must be named as followed: Lastname_part1_01.jpg and
Lastname_part1_02.jpg

Part 2a: Personal Project, 3 Image Series - To be handed in at the end of Competition Day
• The competitor will be required to create 3 thematically related photographs. The theme of the photos will be announced at the beginning of the day.
• Images may be edited using Lightroom or Photoshop • The three image series will be viewed and judged as a collective; there will be only one
mark for this series of images. • All images must be the same ratio and orientation (i.e. all horizontal or vertical, as well
as the same pixel dimensions). • Keywords for this assignment are last name, “theme”, part 2a. • Be aware that the photos will be arranged for judging in the order that they are
numbered. • Each of the final photographs must be 3000 pixels on the longest edge. • Photographs must be named as follows: Lastname_part2a_01.jpg
Lastname_part2a_02.jpg Lastname_part2a_03.jpg Part 2b: In camera, No editing • The three photos from Part 2a will also be submitted as non-edited raw images. • No editing, cropping, in camera effects, or post-production may be used in these 2
photographs. • No keywords are to be applied. • Each photograph will be graded on its own merits. • Photographs must be named as follows: Lastname_part2b_01, Lastname_part2b_02,
Lastname_part2b_03 Part 3: Portrait Editing • The photographer will be required to edit a supplied RAW file (a portrait) to create a
well-edited photograph from a common starting point. • The image provided will be the same for all competitors. • The image must be left in full colour. • The final photograph must be cropped to an 8”x10” file, with the longest edge being
3000px, and submitted as a JPEG. • No use of Photoshop or Lightroom presets allowed. • Photograph must be named as follows: lastname_part3_portraitediting.jpg
Part 4: Entire Portfolio
• The entire body of work will be reviewed for the quality, style, consistency, and strength of images.
• Each competitor’s images will be reviewed and judged as one body of work. • All portfolios are to be handed on USB provided by the end of competition by 3pm. • Photographs submitted past the deadline will not be accepted.

• 6 hours total will be allocated to shooting, post-production, and the delivery of the final product, with a 1 hour break for lunch (optional).
• Competitors can shoot in any format they choose, but must submit in jpeg (saving in RAW is for Part 2 only).
• Images that fail to meet the criteria and/or circumvent the spirit and intent of the competition will be disqualified.
• The competition will begin at 9 am at Robert Service School. All photos must be submitted to the Technical Committee by 3pm on competition day; early submissions will be accepted.
EQUIPMENT, MATERIAL, CLOTHING
Equipment and material provided by Skills Canada Yukon:
• Personal computer and workstation • Software: Adobe Photoshop • USB (for saving portfolios) • Blank SD card
Equipment and material provided by the competitor:
• Digital Camera • Camera lenses of the competitor’s choice • Additional lighting and reflector (optional) • Tripod (optional) • Flash and light meter (optional) • Competitor is welcome to use their own laptop provided they do not access pre-shot
images.
SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
• Closed toed shoes • Appropriate clothing • PPE if you are going into the woodshop or welding room
