11 COLLEGE CUP APPEARANCES • SEVEN ACC CHAMPIONSHIPS • 20 NCAA APPEARANCES6
Florida State finished with one of the nation’s best defense, recording a 0.63 GAA.
In 2021, the Seminoles have recorded eight shutouts in 17 games. The Noles only allowed 11 goals throughout the regular season and allowed more than one goal in just two games this season.
The senor from Lone Tree, Colorado has raked in the honors since first stepping on campus in 2018. As a freshman, she was named to the All-ACC Freshman Team and Second Team All-ACC. Making an impact in the Seminole’s 2018 National Championship run as a freshman, Howell was named to the College Cup All-Tournament Team and was named the College Cup Most Outstanding Player on Defense.
Her sophomore campaign was not much different, earning All-ACC First Team honors and Second Team All-Region honors.
As a junior Howell continued to show improvement as she was named First Team All-ACC, a First Team All-American and was named the nations best player after winning the MAC Hermann trophy.
Howell is an aerial threat winning balls in the midfield and on set piece. In four seasons she has earned 13 goals and 11 assists, while helping to lead the Seminoles to 63 wins in four seasons.
Howell helped lead one of the nation’s best defense in 2021 from her holding midfield position. The Seminoles only allowed 11 goals through 17 games of the season and have only allowed 72 shots, 30 on goal.
On October 8th it was announced that Jaelin Howell is one of four collegiate and 27 players invited to the US Women’s National Team Camp Oct. 18-28, 2020.
Howell also participated in the She Believes Cup and played for 28 minutes against Argentina.
Howell has continued to impress in 2021 as she was named the ACC’s Defensive Player of the Week after the first week of action.
She has helped lead a Seminole defense that has shut out eight of its first 17 opponents while only allowing 11 goals.
Howell has also recorded two goals and one assist, as one goal and assist came against Florida and the second goal against VT.An artist with the ball is what many call Yujie Zhao. In her first three season at Florida State, Zhao has accounted for 61 points (19 goals and 23 assists)
As a freshman, Yujie was a force to be reckoned with, scoring seven goals (second most on the team) and recording five more assists (third on the team) on her way to helping the Seminole earn their second National Championship.
Her performance as a freshman helped her to earn All-ACC First Team honors and paced her on the United Soccer Coaches All-American Second Team. That was not it, Zhao was named TopDrawerSoccer’s National Freshman of the Year
Zhao backed that up with an impressive sophomore campaign. She finished her season tied for third on the team with five goals and second with six assists. On her way to her second First Team All-ACC honor.
Zhao’s creativity not only makes her better but helps out the entire team as it opens up windows for her teammates to get looks on goal.
Zhao finished the 2020 season with thee goals and two assists as she was named the All-ACC First Team. She was also selected as a third team All-American and to the 2020 College Cup All-Tournament team.
She is currently third on the team in points in 2021 with 15 coming from four goals and seven assists.
In Zhao’s four seasons in Tallahassee, the Seminoles have score 196 goals while recording 165 assists.
In 17 seasons under head coach Mark Krikorian, the Seminoles have been a force on the defensive side of the ball, allowing well under a goal per game in 405 games.
The Seminoles have also recorded 218 shutouts, good for shutouts in over half the games played under Krikorian. Florida State has earned a shutout in just under 75 percent of their wins in the past 17 seasons.
Since Mike Bristol joined Mark Krikorian’s staff in 2009 the Seminoles have averaged a .68 GAA in 13 seasons. In those 13 season, the Seminoles have averaged 14 shutouts a season, reaching double-digit shutouts in 11 of his 12 seasons.
Krikorian and Bristol’s defense was on full display during the 2014 National Championship run, when the Seminoles outscored their opponents 70-9 throughout the season. Florida State set an NCAA Record with 19 shutouts and a school record with a GAA of .34. FSU only allowed 2 goals in ACC play and finished the season with a 24-1-1 record.
In 2016 they did it once again, allowing a program low nine goals in a season. FSU finished the season with 12 shutouts, while allowing under half a goal per games.
Florida State’s magnificent defense was on display once again during their 2018 National Championship run. The Seminoles allowed just 13 goals on their way to yet another 20 win season. FSU started the season off holding their opponent off the scoreboard for the first five games of the season. Florida State would go on to do that 11 more times on their way to 16 shutouts in 2018. The Seminole defense was in full force during the NCAA Tournament, recording four shutouts in five games, including the final three of the NCAA Tournament with shutout wins over the three previous national champions.
2020 looked a lot like years past as the Seminoles have recorded shutouts in 11 of their 16 games, out-shooting their opponents by a combined 273-67. FSU has only allowed 30 shots on goal in 17 games during the 2021 season.
