Welcome!

Come see where the Magic Happens!

Sandgate Art Society Inc excitedly welcomes you to our inaugural 4017 Bayside Open Studios. Creatives on Brisbane’s northside are showcasing local art in Bracken Ridge, Sandgate, Deagon, Brighton and Shorncliffe, featuring 14 artist studios with over 25+ participating artists. This is your opportunity to meet the makers in their studios and shared spaces, see how they create, hear their art journeys, participate in workshops and watch enthralled at how artists use their skills and techniques to make and create unique artworks.

Open Studios has been curated to embrace the uniqueness of the beautiful 4017 bayside area and is a self-guided tour where the printed map in this booklet guides you to visit local artists in their studios, each no more than 10 minutes’ drive from each other. Have a great day out in our beautiful bayside, include a walk on the foreshores, nourish yourself at our many coffee shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants, take the kids to the Bracken Ridge Skate Plaza and enjoy all that the bayside has to offer on a beautiful spring weekend. And most importantly look for the Open Studios Flag flying at each studio and you know you have arrived.

An event like this means there are so many to thank from our generous sponsors, hardworking team behind the scenes and the artists themselves. As an inaugural event it has been a huge learning curve for all of us and we hope visitors to the studios will be supportive of our efforts to showcase our local artists.

This booklet contains information about participating artists, studio locations and opening times, workshops and demonstrations on offer, map and even a Red Door Prize! A memento to save as your keepsake of the event.

Visual Artist

Grace’s catalyst for her mixed media/textile artworks is nature, inspired by the lands of Australia. Her artistic process involves placing texture, imagery and marks on the surface. Continuously adjusting and collaging the composition, to create layered artworks with a fusion of rusting, fabric, paper, digital imaging, stitching, mark making and embellishments. Grace creates with rust, and is currently collaging artist books and journals.

David’s inspiration for his oil paintings and drawings is his local Bayside environment and world travels. He has a passion for light, his catalyst, and how it reflects and distorts the surface, whether its glass, water or shiny chrome surfaces. Each reflection is a story, a hidden gem, capturing a moment in time, shimmering, moving, and rippling across the surface.

Art Exhibition

Ginger works with acrylics on canvas and illustration. Her painting experiments with texture and colour, to create unique ‘portrait-not-portraits’ that attempt to capture the subject in essence rather than reflection. Ginger’s illustrations on paper are populated by plants, animals, and tools of the kitchen; whimsical riffs on favourite recipes; born from needing a visual reminder of how to boil an egg.

Artrageous Arts offers studio sessions in life drawing. Participants can have varying skills and experiences in art and use a wide variety of media in their illustrations. Classes are untutored, employing experienced models, and perfect for established artists as well as emerging hobbyists. A culmination of these sessions is an exhibition ‘Drawn from Life’ open during the Open Studios Event.

Visual ArtistJudy’s self-built garden studio allows her the solitude to be creative using music as a catalyst for her art. Inspiration comes from her travels, people met along the way and those special somethings close to one’s heart. With a preference for both oils and acrylics, Judy explores numerous subject matter, as she finds her way on this art journey.

Ramon Marrero attended ‘Art Students League’ in New York City. Influenced by the New York School of Abstract Impressionist artists with their explosive painting style, the expressionist, Van Gogh and Australian artist John Russel help defines his art approach. Jim Hansen is a Sandgate based artist specialising in landscapes. Jim works in acrylic, watercolour, and gouache in a representational style. Many of his paintings are in-depth studies of rainforests and bushland and natural landscapes untouched by civilisation. He invites viewers to go into, explore and discover the wonders of our natural environment.

‘What a wonderfully weird world we’ve woven’Mark captures the threads of this world that are unspoken. Each painting represents something that spoke to him. Everyday somethings that people pass on a whim. But something about the space or the story. Something about the mystery or the glory.Something of beauty or flecked with flaws.Something that causes momentary pause.

Visual ArtistVisual artist Paul Kateley enjoys the realistic portrayal of faces and objects. Paul’s art includes sculpture, works on paper and acrylics. The sculptures are assembled from deconstructed everyday items, and reformed using metals, resins and wood. Close inspection reveals many recognisable parts which engages the viewer. The works on paper include pencil and pastel drawings, with a focus on detail.

Rob’s artwork is a portrayal of his wandering mindscape. The art created depends on the influence of his mood, experience, the ambience, nature, the weather, the emotion, the insight, the experiment, the culture, the humour, the medium, and inspiration to where his mind is taken. A combination of the above is portrayed in his art with mixed mediums and mixed styles.

Jan’s approach with this medium involves the use of commercial fabrics and threads to produce mainly landscape and pictorial images. Her works are one off pieces that involve dyeing, painting, beading, trapunto and threading painting techniques.

Owen’s art is a reflection of his life’s experiences, as a local artist, teacher and traveller. His work is quirky, eclectic and thought provoking. Fine Art Silkscreen printer

‘It makes your heart glad to sit and paint or create, where time just passes, and you don’t need any other company apart from your own.’ Susie paints in acrylics - contemporary style in a riot of colours, and what eventuates on the canvas is a surprise - as she says, ‘it will never be ‘real’! She also slumps glass in a tiny hotbox kiln, which is a passion. Her favourite glass is beautiful shiny dichroic – like jewels.

David is a Brisbane artist with a background in photography and the graphic arts. In his screen printing work he emulates much of the practice and appearance of Japanese prints with regard to subject, composition and the black “key block” which ties the design together. Applying Photo Shop techniques and the use of a studio surface computer, perfectly registered film positives produce prints which meet the technical challenges of screen printing.

He’s energetic, likes new ideas and is known to think off centre. You’ll find his art in the here and now but using colour and line to show what could be.Ian sees value in life and anything in it. Lately he can be found creating art by painting of old chairs with unique and quirky designs. His usual subject matter is anything that grabs his attention although he is partial to scenes around the bayside area. “My art, like life, isn’t black and white”.

Tracy started as a beginner potter, acquiring a wheel, a kiln while learning as she explored. She advertised a few items online and someone enquired if she gave pottery lessons. Tracy said Yes! From there the adventure began. Tracy’s aim is to share the joy of clay with others, offering a creative space to relax, have a laugh and make pots. Moe & Co Pottery was born.

Rust dyeing is Surface Decoration on paper creating an archival like collection of papers, with a weathered and rustic look to your work.

We will produce a collection of samplers on all sorts of textured papers from watercolour papers to unique cotton rag.

Using rust dye techniques, you will create paper surfaces that can be applied to your artworks. Perfect for artist book makers, collage, stitch, artworks on paper.

Our studio is a purpose-built warehouse that has seating and work benches for 18 hand builders, 5 pottery wheels, slab rollers, clay extruders, hand building and wheel tools, glaze, 2 kilns, storage shelving for members to store their recent pieces and works-in-progress, a member’s library, and a small kitchen. Join us at Open Studios, enjoy our hand building and wheel throwing demonstrations, give it a try and go home with a love of pottery!

Learn how to make a classic leatherbound journal, with your choice of papers inside, hand-sewn using a traditional binding technique known as cross-structure.

In this workshop all materials are provided, and you can choose from a variety of soft upcycled leathers, an assortment of different papers for the book’s pages, and a colourful range of waxed-linen bookbinding thread, all coming together to make a unique and personalised journal.

Join Kim Mancini in a workshop that will delight the senses, using inks, watercolours, vintages and transparent papers... layer tissues and papers to create surfaces that you can paint and decorate. Stitch, wire, and bead to finish. One cylinder-shaped lantern will be made using cut motifs allowing light to cast shadows. Hang you finished lantern in the garden or place over tea lights creating whimsical shadows.
