AN INFORMAL INSIGHT Stop for a moment and consider what you want from your childs Jewish education. Certainly, knowledge is important. But is that all? In the post-Google age, where all information is at our fingertips, the aim of Jewish education cannot merely be about transmitting information. Rather, today, Jewish education is about transmitting tradition, communicating what it means to "live Judaism”, and equipping our students with the tools needed to navigate through our world in a meaningful way. While many of these goals are pursued in the classroom, it is an inherently limited space. Today, Jewish schools all over the world have recognised the importance of informal education, which works towards these aims by creating a well-planned, holistic and relevant curriculum. At Yavneh our goal is to address these intangible values in a language that students can understand and appreciate, with our own unique "Yavneh" spin. Rav Noam and I have chosen to focus on three main areas: 1. Judaism and Zionism To create a positive Jewish atmosphere at Yavneh by improving upon our already jam- packed calendar of Jewish experiences. To find new ways to challenge students to consider why Judaism and Israel might be important to them. 2. Student leadership To provide platforms for students to take ownership of their Judaism and contribute in a meaningful way to our school and the broader community. 3. AN INFORMAL INSIGHT

Stop for a moment and consider what you want from your child’s Jewish education. Rav Noam and I have chosen to focus on three main areas:

1. Judaism and Zionism

To create a positive Jewish atmosphere at Yavneh by improving upon our already jam-packed calendar of Jewish experiences.

To find new ways to challenge students to consider why Judaism and Israel might be important to them.

2. Student leadership

To provide platforms for students to take ownership of their Judaism and contribute in a meaningful way to our school and the broader community.

3. Student wellbeing/ Life-skills

To provide students with the tools from a Jewish perspective to confront the various challenges life presents before us.

Here is a taste of some of the new initiatives that we have started since taking on the role of Informal at Yavneh almost two years ago:

Most significantly we have reimagined Zionist camps so that they are specifically tailored for the Yavneh student, as opposed to being a generic experience. As an example this year we changed the focus of year 12 camp to deal with the specific challenges and opportunities that our students will face living a Jewish life in Melbourne after school.

One of many new events that we have initiated over the past 2 years has been the student-run, Yom Ha’atzmaut party. With everyone dancing the night away to the fantastic music of the school band, the atmosphere of celebration for the State of Israel was electric and truly encapsulated the passionate Zionism our school stands for (photos below).

We have started a Year 10 leadership course which culminated in a student-led shabbaton to encourage students to think like leaders and enable them to begin to contribute to our school (photos below).

We have taken a greater role in mentoring the Year 12 captains in order to encourage them to maximise their potential as a group and build on the successes of previous years.

Finally we have expanded our student wellbeing program and created powerful, relevant, programming rooted in the wisdom of the Torah, to both challenge and inspire our students.

The most common question that I am asked, is why after 12 years as a student I would want to spend more time at Yavneh?

RAV NOAM’S PARSHA RAP

Throughout my time at Yavneh I have come to the realisation that this school is a truly special place. I have seen that Yavneh has the capacity to produce graduates of the highest calibre. People who make a tremendous contribution to the community, are passionate about their Judaism and most importantly, are menschs. On the other hand I have seen lots of people for whom their experience at Yavneh has not been as positive and powerful. I feel a responsibility towards our community and I want to be a part of the effort to make the Yavneh experience the best it can be for all students.

I feel grateful to be part of the team at Yavneh working to make this happen. To continue to be successful as a community, we must provide our students with a dynamic, interesting and relevant Jewish education. We are on the right track.

Shabbat shalom.

This past Monday I was standing in the staff room and a non-Jewish colleague said to me “Shabbat Shalom” with a smile on her face. I, of course, replied, “Shabbat Shalom!” She then began to inquire about the proper usage of the term. She said was Googling it the other day and she came to the conclusion that it was said only to people who observe Shabbat. I pointed out that in fact it is a greeting used by all Jews on or leading up to Shabbat, even by those who do not observe Shabbat. At that point she stopped and asked bewilderingly, “Not all Jews keep Shabbat?” I explained that there are different levels of observance and different people connect to Shabbat in their own way. She then said to me, “You need to write about keeping Shabbat in your Kesher this week!” This humorous little conversation highlighted several points for me. One, it is clear that we need to do a better job of explaining Judaism, not

just to the students and families in our school, but also to the employees of the school. And secondly, I need to write about Shabbat in this

week’s Kesher! If I am going to be candid, it is actually hard for me to understand why someone wouldn’t keep Shabbat. I mean, I understand

having difficulty with certain prohibitions of Shabbat, but it seems to me that the concept of Shabbat is more important today than ever before!

25 hours committed to family, community, self-development and rejuvenation, with no phones or cars or television. How could anyone (except

a teenager in the throes of extreme social conformity) not want that? In fact, it is very possible that a break from the technology that is (not so)

slowly but surely reprogramming our minds is the very key to the survival of humanity as we know it. I read an article recently about a former

Google employee Tristan Harris who during his time spent at his previous job realised how app and web developers were designing their

products in order to maximise the amount of time we spend on the phones. They employ subtle tricks to pull us in deeper, and two seconds to

check our mail quickly becomes twenty minutes of mindless scrolling. They do this they because they make more money the more time we

spend in their apps. But what impact is this having on our mental health, social relationships and the lives we lead? After leaving Google,

Harris started a new company called Time Well Spent which is committed to building technology that is “in harmony with our well-being, our

social values, and our democratic capacities,” according to their website. I think these sorts of innovations and explorations are crucial for the

future of humanity. However, we don’t necessarily need to recreate the wheel.

FROM THE ELC

On Shabbat we are mandated to put that phone down. And somehow it works. If a person does not believe that there is a divine commandment to stay off Instagram on Shabbat they may find the inner-strength to do so because it is good for their well-being. But how many people actually do, especially with the cards stacked so mightily against us! A Torah-committed life has the potential to instil within us profound self-control and enable our families to be founded upon values which are the bedrock of healthy relationships. However, the gift of Shabbat goes well beyond its utilitarian benefit. Our parsha opens, “And Yaakov left Be’er Sheva, and went towards Charan.” All the commentators want to know, why does the Torah need to say he left Be’er Sheva? If he went towards Charan, obviously he departed where had been! The Sefat Emet (1847-1905) sees this episode as a guide for our experiences, as individuals and as a nation, in the darkness of the exile. Before Yaakov left Israel for Charan (somewhere in modern-day Turkey), he strengthened his connection to Be’er Sheva (the wellspring of seven), which the Sefat Emet sees as representative of Shabbat (the seventh day). Before Yaakov went on his way to face the trials and tribulations that exile would eventually bring, he cleaved to the place of Shabbat—a deep awareness of the unity of God, so that wherever his travels would take him, he would seek out the Presence of God. He would see the Be’er Sheva even in Charan. That is why the Torah must say, “And Yaakov left Be’er Sheva,” for it was the context of his entire journey. Connecting to the gift of Shabbat, truly committing ourselves to its laws and precepts and giving ourselves over to its spirit, places our entire

life within the context of spirituality. Six days a week we work hard, we wrestle with materialism and technology and we navigate a seemingly

increasingly hostile world. But on the seventh day, we remind ourselves what it’s all about. This life ain’t no rat race, it is a deeply mysterious

gift which deserves our full focus and sanctification. This is what Shabbat is all about—caring about what really matters—and we need this

discipline more than ever.

With that, I wish you a Shabbat Shalom.

Rabbi Noam Sendor Campus Rabbi

SUMMER IS HERE As tempting as it is to slip into summer-relaxed mode, don’t abandon the routines and structures you’ve relied on all year. Now that it’s light outside later, the kids may be clamouring for you to move back bedtime, but they still need to be tucked in at a reasonable hour.. If kindergarten-aged kids don’t get enough sleep, they cry, they’re cranky and they can’t focus. The same holds true for older kids—and exhausted parents. Regular routines, including healthy snacks and lunches, also help kids cope with the excitement of movie days, field trips and other end-of-school treats and activities. Many parents comment that their children are “just out-of-control” this time of year. It helps to reinforce that although things may be a little more free-form at school, your expectations and the teacher’s expectations for behaviour are still the same. Research shows that spending more time outdoors improves children’s concentration in school, lessens aggression and improves their ability to cooperate. It’s “a giant relief valve for everyone in the family,” writes outdoor lifestyle expert Rebecca Cohen in 15 Minutes Outside, a month-by-month collection of 365 easy and enjoyable ways to get out of the house and connect with your kids. Children's outdoor play is different from time spent indoors. The sensory experiences are different, and different standards of play apply. Activities which may be frowned on indoors can be safely tolerated outdoors. Children have greater freedom not only to run and shout, but also to interact with and manipulate the environment. Children are free to do 'messy' activities outdoors that won't be tolerated indoors. Natural outdoor environments have three qualities that are unique and appealing to children as play environments - their unending diversity; the fact that they are not created by adults; and their feeling of timelessness - the landscapes, trees, rivers described in fairy tales and myths still exist today. Children have a unique, direct and experiential way of knowing the natural world as a place of beauty, mystery and wonder. Children's special affinity for the natural environment is connected to the child's development. Indoor play cannot replace the sensory moment where a child's attention is captured by the phenomena and materials of nature: the dappled sparkle of sunlight through leaves, the sound and motion of plants in the wind, the sight of butterflies or a colony of ants, the imaginative worlds of a square yard of dirt or sand and the endless sensory experience of water.

Enjoy our wonderful summer weather. Shabbat shalom Charlene Orwin Head, Early Learning Centre

FLL was a great experience to enjoy. Although we didn’t go

to Nationals and win a trophy, we did a great job. I thought

that our Oh’FLLush presentation was outstanding. The judg-

es thought that it was great too. Here is some information

about the Oh’FLLush; it is a machine that sits on your toilet.

You swipe over the infrared sensor if you might need to

flush. Then you hear a beep and that beep means, “Are you

sure?” Meaning “Are you sure you want to flush?” (It even

says are you sure on the screen of the machine.) If you need

to flush, swipe over the infrared sensor again and the Oh’FL-

Lush flushes for you. If you don’t need to flush you just close

the toilet lid and walk away. So in conclusion I think FLL is

fun, educational and exciting. Also FLL is available to com-

pete in every year, so why don’t you join the FLL team and

enjoy the fun!

The robotics competition (FLL) is a competition where

you build a robot that you program to complete some

challenges. This year the theme was about saving wa-

ter (Hydrodynamics). The robotics team had help

from our Year 7 mentors and Mrs Traurig. We had sep-

arate jobs for people. Dovi, Sebi and Lee were the

builders, Gilad, Hanna and Shoshi were the program-

mers. Moti and Isaac worked on the project presenta-

tion but we all helped with everything. All of us were

proud of what we learnt and were able to present on

Sunday at Swinburne University.

On Sunday our First Lego League (FLL) team went to

Swinburne University to compete and try to get into

nationals in Sydney. There were 4 parts of this compe-

tition robot games, robot design, project and core val-

ues. To get into nationals we had to be strong in all 4

parts. In robot games we have to complete challenges

that have a certain point value and try to not get any

penalties, you get penalties for not following the rule

such as touching the robot when it’s not in base and

starting your program with your robot out of base.

Our highest score was 45 points with no penalties

(second run). I had lots of fun and even though we

didn’t get into national of get a trophy it was all about

the participation.

HISTORY & JEWISH HISTORY DEPARTMENT

Since 2015, we have been commemorating and celebrating many centenaries in relation to World War I. In our last assembly, we remembered the Australian Soldiers who dies in 1917, among them were fifty-seven Jewish soldiers. It is interesting to note that 9% of the general populations volunteered to join the Imperial Forces during WWI, whereas in the Jewish population that number rose to 13%. On Wednesday 29 November, we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the United Nations’ Vote on the Partition Plan, which led to the establishment of the State of Israel. It was not easy to get the majority and a lot of background work took place.

Complementing their study of Wall E, the year 7s have been working on a campaign to promote a healthier environment at school. In their groups, they brainstormed ways that Australia, our state and community can join together to improve our relationship with our environment. Our year 7s have created posters that particularly target our school, its students, teachers and administrators, to create a healthier environment. They are currently working on an advertisement campaign, creating a 30 second film to target a bad habit in the school and a solution to address it. We were fortunate to have Mr Daskalou share his expertise with the year 7s, offering us effective strategies to plan the production of their advertisements.

Untidy Towns is by Melbourne author Kate O’Donnell. Overwhelmed by the pressures of year 12 and her scholarship, Adelaide flees boarding school for the safety of her sleepy hometown. But there are no free rides, and Adelaide has to work at the local historical society, a place that is as dusty and messy as her new life. Then Adelaide meets Jarod, a boy who seems full of possibilities, but he is just as stuck as she is. Soon Adelaide realises that if you want something in life, you actually have to do something about it. Kate O’Donnell is a writer, editor and bookseller

My Side of the Diamond is by English author Sally Gardner. Jazmin has been shunned ever since her best friend Becky disappeared. Becky jumped off a tall building and was never seen again, almost as if she vanished into thin air. Was the disappearance something to do with Jazmin or was it to do with Icarus with whom Becky was suddenly besotted? Sally Gardner was born in Birmingham, near Cadbury’s chocolate factory, and grew up in central London. When she was 5 her parents, who were both lawyers, divorced. At school Sally was bullied because she was different to other children. When she was 12 Sally was diagnosed with dyslexia, which even to this day she can’t spell. Sally ended up at art school and became a set

designer for the theatre. After 15 years she gave

up as her dyslexia became a problem drawing up

costumes. Sally believes dyslexia is a wonderful

gift once you learn to deal with it.

AUSTRALIA VS. HONDURAS AND MOVEMBER On 15 November, the House Captains collaborated with a few of the year 11 boys to help raise money for Movember. The funds raised will contribute to prostate and testicular cancer research as well as promoting mental health and suicide prevention. We invited all secondary students to join us in watching the Australia vs. Honduras World Cup qualifier soccer match in the Lamm Hall. With hotdogs for dinner, everyone was settled in to watch the nail biting match. For Australia to qualify for the World Cup in Russia next year, they had to win. With a scoreless first half, tension was mounting on the team to score the first goal. As the second half progressed, they managed to score another two, which landed Australia an impressive win of 3-1, with Honduras scoring their only goal in the dying seconds. With over 80 students who came to cheer on the Socceroos to an incredible victory, we managed to raise close to $900. Whilst raising funds for this extremely worthy cause, this event also managed to effectively bring together students from various year levels within the secondary school. We believe that holding such events are a fundamental part of what makes Yavneh the closely-knit school that it is and we see this as a great first step in making our contribution to what already is a great school. We would also like to give a huge final thanks to the year 11 boys for all the work they contributed to making this night a success. If you have not yet donated to Movember, please ensure that you do. Play your part in “stopping men dying too young”. Shabbat shalom. Your 2018 House Captains
