The lives of our members are a rich, woven tapestry of personal stories and experiences. They are filled with ups and downs, strengths and challenges. As I reflect on my own story, I think about my inner strength and how it guides me, as a woman, wife, mother, daughter, friend, and on my journey

as a Hadassah leader.

My inner strength has given me the confidence to make the most of the good times and the courage to navigate the obstacles and

difficult paths. I believe this comes from knowing who I am and staying true to myself. I make time to rejuvenate from all of life’s distractions; to calm my inner voice and soul, so that I stay focused on what is important. I also listen to my inner voice and allow myself time for deeper thoughts and reflection.

Setting routines, keeping company with people who fill me with positive energy, taking care of my body with healthy food, and exercise, all help me to feel good about the person I am. Giving back to my community and living a meaningful life through tzedakah, involvement in Hadassah and helping others to grow as leaders, also nourishes my soul and inner strength.

In Hadassah, miracles and greatness happen every day. At our hospitals, our doctors and researchers are working hard to find cures for diseases such as Alzheimer’s, ALS, macular degeneration, Parkinson’s Disease, and so many others. Locally, Hadassah is providing ways to empower women to take charge of their health and lives by offering programs and opportunities to attend women’s health programs or to advocate on behalf of Gender Equity in Medical Research. Hadassah is an organization rich with diverse ways in which to connect and become involved.

How do you connect with Hadassah and cultivate your inner strength?

I invite you to join me in nourishing your soul on Sunday, December 10, as Hadassah Southern California presents Uncovering Your Greatness featuring Rabbi Naomi Levy.

Wishing you a warm and wonderful Hanukkah!

Chag Sameach,

Debbie Kessler

One of the parts of my job that gives me great satisfaction is watching Hadassah women develop confidence, become comfortable with themselves, and for some, grow into leadership roles. Each day for me is different—phone calls, meetings with committees, conversations with our generous donors, and working with our staff team. But the best days, are when I get to watch you—our dynamic Hadassah members—host fundraisers, trainings, engage potential new members and so much more.

My job, and the job of our staff team is to be at your side, to partner with you and support you in our important life-saving Hadassah work. In other words, we get to watch you discover your greatness, as you give your energy to our organization. If you are looking to discover that greatness in yourself and want to find your role with Hadassah, please feel free to reach out to me at [email protected], or to one of our area offices. We’re here, and we’re waiting for you.

With gratitude for all you do,

Lauren Rothman

NEWS & INFORMATION WINTER 2017 | KISLEV - ADAR 5778

Hadassah is a powerful network of women around the country whose passions and power take root and thrive. Hadassah members build strong Jewish communities, support advanced medical care and research in Israel, and advocate for important women’s issues.

Hadassah is powering up to recruit new members and engage our membership base with “We Got the Power,” a new membership campaign. As an incentive, Hadassah offers the opportunity to win a free trip to Israel on a Hadassah Mission or to New York City on one of four VIP Hadassah excursions. To be eligible, you must enroll as a new Hadassah Life Member between September 1, 2017 and April 15, 2018. Additionally, a 100-word personal perspective on what The Power of Women Who DO must be submitted (see www.hadassah.org for a full list of contest rules).

In Hadassah Southern California, membership expansion is a top priority, and in the Metro Los Angeles area, revitalization efforts are running high. A new young women’s group was established as an outgrowth of the 2017 Young Women’s Conference. In addition, not one, but two new groups are being created in the South Bay area. An eager Nanci Patchen, Metro Area Membership Chair, shares, “There are many new ways in which to connect and become involved. There is a place for everyone and we invite you to join us today.”

In San Diego, two new groups were established, the Bat Shemesh Group with programming for women ages 30s-40s and the second, Hatikvah of the Inland Empire, is for women 40s-60s who require an evening group. For the women of the Inland Empire, other than

synagogues, Hadassah provides them with a precious Jewish connection where there is otherwise none.

Another exciting development in membership takes place in Orange County, where there is a call out to women in their 30s to 50s who live in the area, and are looking to form a new Hadassah group with like-minded women.

It is well-established that current Hadassah members are the most effective recruiters for our organization. Help us flourish by encouraging others to experience the power of Hadassah in their own lives. Call your local office (see page 2) with the names of potential new members, or better yet, bring them with you to your next Hadassah event wherever that may be!

&MythsMisconceptions

Did you know that there are as many as 40 diff erent types of dementia of which Alzheimer’s is the most common form? Alzheimer’s is a general term for loss ofmemory and the slow decline and ongoingdegeneration of other cognitive abilities that interfere with daily life. It accounts for 60%-80% of dementia cases, and is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. In those with advanced Alzheimer’s Disease, other capabilities may also be aff ected such as a sense of direction, basic motor skills, fi tness, eating and incontinence.

Surprisingly, the disease can hit at arelatively young age. Cindy Hailpern, (Life Member Sabra Hadassah of the Desert) was dismayed when in 2014, her brother, Jay Rosenthal, started showingsymptoms of Early Onset Temporal Lobe Dementia (EFD), which is a geneticdisease in Ashkenazi Jews associated with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. He was only 64 years old, and yet symptoms can show up as early as 50 years of age.Cindy explained, “He lost his reasoning, and he lost his ability to control his impulses. He started taking off without knowingwhere he had been.” Jay is now in a memory care facility that deals with EFD patients. “When I heard about Jay’sdiagnosis, I was devastated, knowing my time with him was marked, not by a long life but possibly a very short one. Beingwith him is hard. He has changed so much in the last few years. He is not the

brother we once knew.” Cindy continued, “All we can do is tell him we love him, as often as possible. I get very sad when I really think about what is happening to him.”

For Katherine Backman, (Life Member San Diego Area) Alzheimer’s hit herhusband, Sydney Backman when he was 82. Although his illness has agenetic component, genetic componentsare only found in 25% of people with Alzheimer’s. “I was taking care of him alone at fi rst, but he began to have falls, and I could no longer lift him,” explained Katherine. Sydney is now in a home with round-the-clock care where Katherine visits him daily. She illustrates further, “He is confi ned to a wheelchair and is mainly incoherent. He has reverted to child-like behaviors, has lost his table manners and is incontinent. It breaks my heart every day.” Despite the daily challenges, Katherine remains positive and while there is no known cure, her recommen-dation to us is, “it is vitally important to keep your mind active, to exercise, and to eat a healthy diet.”

Research is our hope. Alzheimer’s isprimarily a disorder of disorientation, andthose who suff er from the disease demonstrate a loss of functioningaff ecting memory, navigation, and their relations to people. Developers of Alzheimer’s medication have postulated that by the time the neurologist makes a diagnosis, it is too late to treat the disease

The Power of Memory

Although researchers are learning more about the disease, there is no known cause behind brain cells failing. No single treatment can prevent it. Exercising your mind and body, eating a heart-healthy diet, reducing stress and staying socially active may all help reduce your risk.

Most people with Alzheimer’s are 65 and older, but it can happen when you’re younger too. About 5% of people with the disease get symptoms in their 30s, 40s or 50s. It’s called early-onset Alzheimer’s.

Familial Alzheimer’s disease accounts for less than 5% of all cases of the disease.

Believing that your loved one does not have Alzheimer’s because they can remember past events is a common misconception. Alzheimer’s initially aff ects the ability to retain recent information and recent memories while memories can retain all their vivid details.

Alzheimer’s disease is preventable.

Alzheimer’s is only a disease of the elderly.

My mother had Alzheimer’s, so I’m going to get it too.

A person who can remember past events doesn’t have Alzheimer’s disease.

The Power of Memoryeff ectively. At Hadassah, researchers have made progress in detecting biomarkers for the early detection of Alzheimer’s. In an eff ort to achieve a quickerdiagnosis, Dr. Shahar Arzy, Director of the Computational Neuropsychiatry Lab at Hadassah Hospital, has developed a remarkable app called Clara, that isalready available on Android cellphones around the globe. The app leads thepatient through a three-step solution that aims to virtually recreate their world, identify the individual trajectory of their disease, and keep them oriented in the present. The Clara app helps doctors todiagnose the disease quicker andadminister medication sooner. This is amajor breakthrough achieved by Hadassah.

Meanwhile, patient care continues at the highest level at Hadassah Hospital’s

Alzheimer’s treatment center in the Department of Neurology, where doctorsspecialize in the diagnosis and treatmentof Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, along with other neurological problems.Alzheimer’s and dementia patients are given advice, support and guidance.Alzheimer’s specialists also provide guidance and support for families and caregivers of patients based on much research and experience in the fi eld. But more money is desperately needed for research, and support from members like you can help furtherresearch that could one day interrupt the deterioration of the disease for patients.

Make a lasting impact. Donate today.

“Thanks to sophisticated new diagnostic tools, developed at Hadassah’s Computational Neuropsychiatry Laboratory, doctors will be able to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease much earlier and, consequently, improve the prognosis for millions of people.” – Dr. Shahar Arzy Director of the Hadassah Medical Organization’s Computational Neuropsychiatry Laboratory

2. Reach out to organizations of other faiths and backgrounds to build coalitions against hatred in your community.

3. Urge your elected offi cials to condemn violence and hatred, calling out the dangerous Nazi and white supremacist ideologies behind them, and developing a plan of action.

5. Stay up to date on Hadassah’s advocacy opportunities by registering for Hadassah’s Advocacy Alerts and Updates at www.hadassah.org

6. Speak out on social media. Share Hadassah’s graphics, posts and statements on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest. #StopTheHate

Hadassah is outraged by the alarming 86% rise in anti-Semitic incidents in the United States, and is not standing idly by. In a strongly-worded 2017 Combating Anti-Semitism policy statement, Hadassah:

• Calls on all nations and international bodies to establish or intensify their eff orts to track, investigate and prosecute those responsible for anti-Semitic hate crimes;

• Calls on the US Government to promote collaboration and provide robust funding for the Department of Justice, Department of Homeland Security, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and other government agencies to combat domestic anti-Semitism in all forms;

• Calls on all governments and religious leaders to end practices of incitement and hatred in all forms and denounce in the strongest possible terms all anti-Semitic attacks, statements, and propaganda—especially from leaders and communities within their own country of faith.

According to Hadassah National President Ellen Hershkin, “The United States is witnessing an alarming rise in anti-Semitic incidents, varying from graffi ti, hate speech and digital harassment, to bomb threats and Jewish cemeterydesecrations. Additionally, white nationalist groups have increased membership and activity, receiving greater attention from the political mainstream. Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, deplores the increase in the number of threats and acts of violence perpetrated against Jewish institutions, synagogues and Jews around the world. Anti-Semitism is a hate crime against all of humanity.”

Following the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, which was initially intended to protest the removalof a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee and later quickly turned violent, Hadassah joined with other Jewish, interfaith, and secular organizations condemning neo-Nazism, and urged Hadassah members to speak out in the face of hatred. “As members of Hadassah, we cannothelp but have a special understanding of the dangers of bigotry for all people,” said Hershkin. “As the largest women’s Zionist organization in America, we say loudly and clearly—we do not tolerate this heinous type of hatred in America, or anywhere in the world.”

Hadassah Southern California members will have the opportunity to engage in the conversation about anti-Semitism and intolerance at the Northern (Valleys) Area’s 4th annual Dine and Discuss event on February 8, 2018. Panelistswill include a Representative from the Anti-Defamation League’s Center on Extremism, a Commander from local law enforcement, and a student activist. The event will benefi tHadassah Medical Organization’s work to treat victims of terrorand hate crimes. “The purpose of Dine and Discuss is to examinecurrent, and sometimes diffi cult topics,” said Evelyn Perl who is co-chairing the event with Northern Area Co-PresidentFay Thaw. Perl continues, “There is nothing more diffi cult or more important to talk about than the rise in hate happening in our country. We can’t sweep it under the rug—we must raise awareness, advocate, and educate. Never again.”
