Belino is ormer chair o the Mechanical
Engineering (ME) Department. He isinstrumental in the establishment o the
DLSU-ASME Student Section. He received
a plaque, certicate, and $500 honorarium.

during the 2011 ASME International
Summit in Mechanical/Multi-Disciplinary

29 in Hong Kong.
The event was co-hosted by the Hong
Kong Polytechnic University and the
Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society.
ASME promotes the art, science, and
practice o multidisciplinary engineering
and allied sciences in the world. Founded
in 1880, it has grown to have more than
120,000 members rom 150 countries
worldwide. There are about 300 student
sections all over the world; ve o which are
in the Philippines.

HECK
ProF. riChArD hECk WiLL bECoNFErrED an honorary doctorate
(honoris causa) by De La Salle University
during the Commencement Exercise on
February 4. Heck is an American chemist
who taught Chemistry at the University o
Delaware and also a recipient o the Nobel
Prize in Chemistry.
Noted or his discovery and development
o the Heck Reaction, Heck was awarded
the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in October
2010, together with Ei-ichi Negishi and
Ajura Suzuki, or their work on palladium-
catalyzed coupling reactions in organic
synthesis.
Heck presented to the department his
Nobel Laureate poster with his signature
and dedication on it. He is now retired and
currently residing in the Philippines.
Recently, 25 aculty members o theChemistry Department headed by
Dr. Nancy Lazaro-Llanos and College o
Science Dean Dr. Gerardo Janairo hosted
a reception or him.

DE LA SALLE uNivErSity ForMALLy SigNEDa memorandum o agreement with SM Investments Corporation
(SMIC) or the latters P300 million donation last January 10 at the
Yuchengco Board Room.
DLSU President and Chancellor Br. Narciso Erguiza, Jr. FSC
signed the memorandum together with SMIC President Hans Sy.
Vice Chancellor or Lasallian Mission and Alumni Relations
Br. Bernard Oca FSC was also there to witness the event.
In the memorandum, SMICs donation will be used to partially
nance the construction o the Centennial Hall. The University,
in turn, will name the building ater SMIC Chairman Emeritus
Henry Sy, Sr.
The DLSU Henry Sy, Sr. Hall will be the rst major building under
the Centennial Renewal Plan, a long-term redevelopment master
plan to rationalize the whole campus setup and respond to the
current and uture needs o the University.

the 2012 DLSU College Admissions Test.
The University will oer the Vaugirard
Scholarship Program to deserving public
high school students who made it to the
list o top examinees. The program covers
ull scholarship and Php10,000 monthly
stipend or 50 students.
In addition, 25 slots will be available under
the Gokongwei Grants or those pursuing
Engineering programs.
The rest o the top 100 examinees are
automatically entitled to the benets under
a program launched last yearthe Top
Achievers in the Freshman Test, or simply,
the T.A.F.T. 100, which includes a 10 per
cent tuition discount.
These new programs were established or
the top examinees who will not make it to
the Star Scholars roster. As the premier
scholarship program in DLSU, the Star
Scholars grant is given to candidates who
pass a rigorous screening and panel
interview. An average o 15 students are
added to the premiere scholarship program
every year.
The incoming Star Scholars will be
the rst batch to receive an iPad and
Php10,500 monthly allowance on top o
the ull scholarship, mentoring, and other
incentives.

iN A WEEkLoNg EvENt hELD lastJanuary 16-21, talents o the our major student
media groups converged to launch the Student
Media Oce (SMO). The oce will be the hub
or all the student publications and by the next
academic year, it will also include the Green
Giant radio station.
The SMO hopes to launch LaSalle TV (LSTV)
to be more in touch with the interests o the
students. A research arm will also be ormed
to get a better understanding o the media
habits o students. As SMO Director Mr. Randy
Torrecampo said, we want to get to know our
students more.
In the pipeline or the SMO is a total conversion
into a multimedia hub wherein other media
such as TV, radio, social networks, and mobile
platorms will also be included.
Former Foreign Aairs Minister o
Singapore George Yong-Boon Yeo
visited De La Salle University or an
inormal dialogue with students last
January 18 at the Marilen Gaerlan
Conservatory.
Yeo spent more than two decades o
his lie in government service. He was
elected in the Parliament a
number o times and
served in various
key government
posts such as
Minister or
Inormation and
the
Arts, Minister or Health, Minister or
Trade and Industry, and Minister or
Foreign Aairs.
A graduate o Lasallian schools, Yeo
revealed his anity with the audience
as he shared his experiences as a
student under the guidance o La
Salle Brothers. During the open
orum, he also gave his insights on
various issues, such as Southeast
Asian relations, the Spratly Islands
controversy, ree trade, North
Korea, and China, among others.
At present, Yeo is an active
supporter o various
educational
institutions,
including LA
SALLE College
o the Arts in
Singapore.
