STAND AND BE COUNTED

Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and a commitment in all its

dimensions brings you advantages, recognition, and

responsibilities of many kinds. Being a registered parishioner

makes things much easier when it is time for infant Baptism,

weddings, when asked to be a Baptismal or Confirmation Sponsor and even funerals.

We are often asked to provide affidavits for Baptismal and

Confirmation Sponsors. We can only do this if a person is a

registered, active and contributing member.

So, are you a registered parishioner?

If not, please consider registering. Registration forms

are available in the Parish Ministry Center or online

at www.st-justin.org

The adult choir has begun regular Thursday evening rehearsals in preparation for Christmas. If you would like to join in the fun, please see Lillian (at the piano) after any Sunday mass or contact her at [email protected], 408-296-1193 x112.

COMMUNITY MINISTRY TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION We’ve been thinking about names lately, and there is hardly any tradi-tion older than changing one’s name when accepting a new vocation in life. In the time of Jesus, people would normally wait until the eighth day after birth for the naming of a child, partly because of the fragility of infant life, when the eighth day would mark the end of a survival crisis, and also because the elders would look for some clues as to the child’s identity. In Jewish life then as now, it was not the custom to name a child after a living parent; notice there are no “juniors” in the genealogy of Jesus. Remember also how the relatives complained to Zachary and Elizabeth that no one in their family was ever named John. Then there are the changed names, Abram became Abraham, Sarai became Sarah, Saul became Paul, Simon became Peter. This spills over into Western culture in many ways, such as British royalty taking new names at coronation. It’s anybody’s guess, for example, whether the Prince of Wales intends to be King Charles II, or become Henry, or Edward, or George if he wishes.

Members of religious orders have until recent years swapped baptismal names for new ones, and the latest pope made a switch as well. Secular life has many parallels, and movie stars like Cary Grant, Judy Garland, and John Wayne might not have shone so brightly as Archie Leach, Frances Gumm, and Marion Morrison. There are some compelling reasons in our tradition for taking a new name when undertaking a new mission, yet also a clear preference for choosing the right baptismal name from the start! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Jubilee Year of Mercy

September 25, 2016 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time Jubilee for Catechists Amos castigates religious people who, “comfortably complacent” (6:1, 5), ignore the unfolding collapse of culture, nation, religion (6:6). In Jesus’ parable, such complacency becomes the rich man’s undoing. He neither hurt nor harmed Lazarus, neither denied him leftovers nor ordered him removed. That is Jesus’ devastating point. The rich man did nothing wrong to Lazarus; he just did nothing at all good for him. Only in death, separated by “a great chasm” (Luke 16:26), could the rich man finally see Lazarus, whom he had failed to see in life, right before his eyes. Like the rich man’s “five brothers still in my father’s house” (16:27–28), we who are alive in the Church still have time to see that same Someone, Jesus, lying neglected right at our door—and time to do something. Who, specifically, concretely, practically, is Lazarus in my life? What can I do for that Jesus-in-the-flesh during this Jubilee Year of Mercy? —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

1. Every citizen who is eligible to vote must do so. It is a sacred trust, a grave responsibility. In casting a ballot, each person becomes a participant in our democratic process. Voting is a moral act, it expresses our values, our faith, and our hopes for our nation and world.

2. Be informed. Read and study the many issues and candidates that will appear on your ballot. There are no simple answers to the challenges that face our nation and our world. The United States is integrated into the society of nations and cannot act unilaterally. The good of the whole world and the welfare of people most at risk – the “common good” – must always be considered in the policies that govern the actions of our nation.

3. There are key moral and social issues that need to be considered in casting one’s vote. The teaching of Pope Francis is clear that there are a number of concerns that must be included in moral decision-making. Among these are abortion, poverty, capital punishment, care for the environment, assisted suicide, and immigration.

4. There is no “perfect” candidate. There is no “Catholic” candidate. No candidate’s position on the issues lines up consistently with the teaching of the Church. San Diego Bishop Robert W. McElroy notes the inherent complexity in casting a ballot: “Voting for candidates is a complex moral action in which the voter must confront an entire array of competing candidates’ positions in a single act of voting. It is crucial that in voting for a candidate who supports the advancement of an intrinsic evil, Catholic voters not have the intention of supporting that specific evil, since such an intention would involve them directly in the evil itself. But voters will often find themselves in situations where one candidate supports an intrinsically evil position, yet the alternative realistic candidates all support even graver evils in the totality of their positions.”

5. The Church may become directly involved in encouraging parishioners to vote one way or another on issues of moral import. This would include, for example, our support of Proposition 62, which would eliminate the death penalty, and our opposition to Proposition 66, which would expedite the implementation of the death penalty.

6. Every Catholic citizen has the responsibility to form their conscience by considering the complexity of the issues, the teaching of the Church, and their own relationship with the Lord. We are bound to vote according to our conscience. As Pope Francis stated in The Joy of Love, it is the role of the pastors to help form consciences, not to replace them.

In closing, I entrust you all to the Lord, that you may be enlightened by the indwelling Holy Spirit and that you may participate as responsible citizens in casting your ballot on November 8. As you do so, please know that you are all in my prayers.

Bishop McGrath’s Statement on the 2016 Elections

As we approach this Fall’s General Election, I know that many of you – like myself – are in the process of discerning the choices before us in the presidential race, as well as in many of the other races and issues that will be decided on November 8. I am writing to you today to put forward principles for your consideration in arriving at decisions that are consistent with Catholic teaching.
