  • Lord...Teacher...Servant...SAVIOR!By: Marilyn Nolte, LCCF Chaplain Manager

“Having loved His own who were in the world, He now showed them the full extent of His love.” (John 13:1b) Those familiar words from John’s account of Jesus washing his disciples’ feet were not familiar to me as a new believer, but those words struck a deep cord in my heart when I heard them for the first time. As if going to the cross would not be proof enough, Jesus humbled Himself to the distasteful task only a servant would perform! Then, with all feet washed, including Judas’, Jesus explained what He had done. “I have set you an example that you should do what I have done for you.” adding, “Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.” Twice I had the great joy of participating in foot washing services at local churches. I sensed God saying it was time to bring this powerful experience to the women of the Church Behind Bars at LCCF. The first time, I assembled a rag-tag team consisting of a pastor friend and a former inmate who were assisting with prison ministry. The response of the women was amazing. Foot washing has since become an annual tradition with the help of the worship team from Cornerstone Church. Laurie Strehl, Joy Courtwright and several other volunteers come in every Easter season, armed with basins and towels generously loaned to us by Cornerstone. We begin with music and worship and then teach on John 13:1-13, reading the Word and then showing an excerpt from a DVD of the Gospel of John. Then the invitation…. “Please remove your socks and shoes and allow us to be the hands of Jesus. No pressure, if you would prefer to observe we will pray for you instead.” Offers to wash our feet are gently refused. This night we want the women to be on the receiving end of God’s generous love. Their world is “things for things.” You do for me. I do for you. And vice versa. But this is not so in the kingdom of God. Following Jesus is eventually about putting our faith into action. But at the beginning, where the female inmates are, it is about knowing the impact of God’s free gift of grace and salvation, and then later, loving because they were first loved. May that be not only their experience, but also the experience of all who call Him Lord, Teacher, Servant and Savior.

Every year… Jubilee Ministries sponsors children whose parents are incarcerated or are currently on probation or parole to spend a week at a local summer camp. After camp, we ask them to send us a letter or drawing of their favorite camp experience. This is just one example of how your support of Jubilee Ministries is changing the lives of the youth in our community. To see more letters and pictures of our campers’ experiences, visit our website at www.jub.org/ministries/summer-camp.

  • Lebanon Mediation Services (LMS), a program of Jubilee Ministries, participated in several local National Night Out events on August 4, 2015. They spread the word about mediation, a process in which mediators help people come up with a solution that everyone agrees will work. During mediation, participants have opportunity to tell their side of the story, listen to what the other participants have to say, and reach agreements they can live with. Mediators provide a neutral setting for face-to-face discussion, clarify the issues that need to be resolved, help participants reach an agreement and write the agreement.

If you know of someone seeking to resolve conflict peacefully, please refer them to Lebanon Mediation Services at 717-277-0111.

If you are interested in being part of this mutually transforming relationship-based ministry, contact Lee Smedley at 610-914-3846 or [email protected]. You can also contact Jubilee Ministries at 717-274-7528. An informational meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 29th at 5:30 pm at LCCM (250 S 7th St, Lebanon) or you can contact Lee to schedule a presentation on how your group can become involved. Find out more about SCLC at www.supportcircleslebco.org.

Support Circles of Lebanon County is establishing a new ministry! Based on the successful results of Palmyra Circles and in partnership with Jubilee Ministries and LCCM, 12 families who are struggling to provide for themselves will be asked to join SCLC. Their journey will begin in October when they will gather with volunteers (Allies) each Tuesday evening at a downtown location for a meal and a meeting where they will learn the skills and tools necessary to move towards greater stability and self-sufficiency.
