Several in- cidents were reported in the Vhembe area where “suspects” were mercilessly beaten to death by angry mobs. In a number of cases the at- tacks were the result of the communities’ frustration with the lack of proper law enforcement. It does, however, seem that there may be people with even more sinister motives, using the mobs hunger for vengeance to do their dirty work. This has caused the deaths of innocent people whose only “mistake” was being in the wrong place at the time. The past two weeks, terrify- ing images were distributed on social media of the burnt body of a young victim of such a mob attack. Even people who work in other provinces were left shocked by what was happening back home in the Vhembe district. One of the victims was the 24-year-old Phumudzo Mudau, a resident of Ngwenani ya ha Themeli. His family members were traumatised after witness- ing the death of their son and were placed in a counselling programme run by the Munna Ndi Nnyi men’s forum. During Limpopo Mirror’s visit to the family on Saturday, the family explained that Phumudzo was kidnapped in the streets of his village, bundled into a car and taken to Gondeni la Mabilu village. It is alleged that three Somalian businessmen and a local man had kidnapped him on 24 April. “We heard from a resident that our son, who had just returned from Gauteng on leave a week earlier, was taken forcefully by four men,” the tearful mother, Mrs Lufuno Mudau, said. “We phoned Phumudzo, but his one phone was off-line while the oth- er one kept ringing unanswered. So we decided to rush to Gondeni village.” When Phumudzo’s father, Mr Ndinannyi Mudau, and his moth- er arrived at Gondeni, they found that there was a mob of noisy people. They negotiated their way through the mob and found that there was a young man lying on the ground. “It was my son Phumudzo; I couldn’t recognise him at first as he was swollen and covered in dust.” The father told the people that the young man was his son and wanted to know why they were assaulting him. He was informed that Phumudzo had been terror- ising the Gondeni residents for over two months, and that he had robbed one Somalian spaza-own- er several times at gunpoint. “They said they wanted to burn him right away,” he said. “It was then that I rushed to the police, who were standing a short distance away from the mob, and informed them to come to the rescue of my son. The police said they were afraid of the mob.” Mudau and his wife heard the mob shouting and jeering. He turned and looked at the mob and saw a five-litre bottle raised above the heads of the people. “Liquid was pouring out of the bottle and soon a big flame of fire rose above the people,” he said. “All the people stepped back quickly. My wife and I rushed to help our son. He had stood up, engulfed in flames, and he was spinning around, trying to extinguish the fire that was burning him.” A frustrated, shocked father grabbed his son and tore off his clothes with his bare hands. “He fell down after some time,” he said. “The police refused to take our son to the hospital and told us that they had called an ambulance. But, after some 30 minutes, we realised that the ambulance they claimed to have called was not coming.” - Continues on page 2 Suspected criminals survive attack - page 7 Second Africa Day Reggae Festival - page 12 Shop no. 5 Madar Centre, next to the Post Office, Thohoyandou Tel: (015) 962 1008 Madridtas through to provincial play-offs - page 24 27 May 2016 Year 26 Vol: 37 R4,00 VAT Inc. Well-known local news reporter passes away

Mutavhatsindi denies role in unrest

Well-known former Univen FM news reporter and current-affairs presenter, Livhalani Richard Mmbi (42), is no more.

The media fraternity received the shocking news on Monday morning, which spread like wildfire. An award winning newsman and prolific new-shound, Mmbi, of Maniini village near Thohoyandou, died shortly after falling ill.

As a founder-member of the Vhem-be Journalists Forum (VJF), Mmbi played a major role in the sustain-ability of the organization and re-

cruitment of budding journalists. He also served in various positions of leadership within the VJF. Besides his love of the newsroom, Mmbi was also a farmer of note who supplied the local villagers with chickens, fruit and vegetables. Mr Owen Muebi, who cut his journalism teeth with Mmbi at Univen FM more than 10 years ago, said that it was “very painful to wake up to the news that one of our own newsmen has gone. Mmbi has been a symbol of hard work both inside and outside the newsroom. He was a fearless journalist who only fought

for the truth. We will surely miss his brave reports about issues re-lating to non-delivery of services in munici-palities and government departments.” Muebi urged young journalists to follow in Mmbi’s footsteps. “He was an accurate reporter who did his work without fear or favour. His con-tribution towards the

shaping of the journalism industry will always be remembered. His spirit will continue to guide us to take the journalism industry to another level.”

Family representative Mr Vhangani Mmbi added that Livhalani’s death had robbed the family of a valuable asset. He said, however, that they were consoled by the massive support from family, friends and community members. A memorial ser-vice in Mmbi’s honour was held yesterday (Thurs-d a y ) a t t h e Maniini Evan-gelical Luther-an Church. A se rv ice wi l l be held at the same church today (Friday 2 7 M a y ) a t 13:00 before he is finally laid to rest at the family’s sa-cred graveyard (zwiendeulu) in the village as per the customs and practices of the royal fam-ily.

Award-winning journalist Livhalani Richard Mmbi will be buried today at Maniini village.

During the course of this week, Makhado Mayor Cllr David Mutavhatsindi vehemently denied allegations that he was responsible for fuelling the vi-olent protests and the burning of schools in the Vuwani area.

For the past few weeks, the Vuwani area has been plagued by violent protests against Vu-wani’s being taken away from the Makhado Municipality and being incorporated into a new municipality as decided by the municipal demarcation board. By the end of last week, 24 schools had been torched in the area. On Monday this week, another school was targeted by protest-ers, who set alight a classroom at Mawela Primary School at Serene Village. Computers, a photocopier and books were damaged in the fire.

Since the unrest had broken out, several people were arrested and charged with public violence, malicious damage to property and arson. Among those arrested for the violence is a councillor of the Makhado Municipality, Cllr Gideon Tshavhuyo. This led to widespread speculation as to who might be behind the violent protest action in the Vuwani area.

Last Wednesday, thousands of pamphlets were distributed in the Louis Trichardt and Vuwani area by an anonymous source. The pamphlets lashed out at the “leaders” responsible for the mayhem at Vuwani.

“The people behind this sit-uation are known but feared … These leaders are not leading us to future (sic) but serving their own interests … These leaders are behind this violence,” the pamphlet reads. The author(s) of the pamphlet then go on to point fingers at prominent people such as the mayor of Makhado and Chief Masia, accusing them of financing the violence. Names of a list of people allegedly responsible for the “torching of schools” are mentioned, as well as the names of more people al-legedly supplying money to fuel the violence.

The Vuwani issue has made headlines for the past few weeks

and reverberated in Parliament two weeks ago when the Minis-ter of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Des Van Rooyen, told the National Assembly that the decision to amalgamate Vuwani with parts of the Malamulele municipality had been made on the basis of forming municipalities that were economically viable‚ sustainable and able to deliver services to citizens. But this “led to un-happiness within the Vuwani community‚ which is largely Venda-speaking,” he said.

The Economic Freedom Fight-ers (EFF) MP, Floyd Shivambu, blamed the protest action on internal African National Con-gress (ANC) battles. “It’s mostly intra-ANC squabbles because the mayor of Makhado is from Vuwani, so when he is demar-cated into the new municipality, Malamulele, he realises that it’s not going to be a possibility of him becoming a mayor again,” he said.

In the strongly worded press release issued by the Makhado Municipality on 19 May, the municipality states that Mayor Mutavhatsindi would like to set the record straight on the insin-uations that he was instigating violence in Vuwani and the surrounding areas “as he feared that he would lose his position as mayor by the establishment of a new municipality in Vhembe.” The municipality states that, as a disciplined cadre of the ANC, Mutavhatsindi knows that his term of office ends on 3 August 2016. “He has been appointed for a particular term and he cannot defend that, as the ANC can de-ploy him anywhere at any time,” the press release reads.

Mutavhatsindi is quoted as saying: “I vehemently deny any malicious allegations levelled against me that I am responsible for the spate of violence and the burning of schools. Those faceless people purporting to be saints were hell-bent on assassi-nating my character for their own selfish ends. I challenge these cowards to come up in the open and open a case against me with

the law enforcement agency.”On enquiry, SAPS Makhado

cluster spokesperson W/O Ked-ibone Mabatha said on Wednes-day that the police were still not aware of any official charges being laid against Mayor Mu-tavhatsindi regarding the allega-tions contained in the pamphlet that he is one of the high-profile people inciting the violence. Mabatha also said that he was not aware of any charges being laid by Mayor Mutavhatsindi against the anonymous people responsible for distributing the pamphlet.

In total, more than 20 people were arrested in connection with the violent protests in Vuwani. Many of these, including Cllr Tshavhuyo and a teacher, Mr Edzisani Muthathe, appeared in the Malamulele Magistrate’s Court last Wednesday to bring a formal bail application. The case was, however, postponed until Tuesday this week, while they re-mained in custody. On Tuesday, a total of 18 accused appeared in the Malamulele Court to bring a formal bail application. Their applications could once again not be finalised as a result of technical problems in court, ac-cording to the police’s provincial spokesperson, Col Ronel Otto. Their case was then postponed until Wednesday.

By the time of our going to press, the outcome of their bail application was not yet known. It was also not known how many people arrested for the Vuwani unrest had appeared in the Tho-hoyandou Court as Otto said that they were still awaiting feedback.

The ugly outcome of mob justiceFrom page 1

“We then wrapped our son in a towel and took him to Tshilid-zini Hospital.”

Phumudzo only lived three more days, however, and passed away on 26 April at Mankweng Hospital. “We feel sad about what had happened,” Mudau said. “My daughters still send Phumudzo ‘please call me’ mes-sages, thinking he will call them back and buy them some clothes and pay for their tertiary tuition fees. He had a job in Gauteng and he was helping his siblings financially. He loved them and they loved him.”

The police’s spokesperson, Major Mashudu Malelo, con-firmed that a case of murder had been opened, following the incident. “We have not made any arrests so far and our inves-tigations in this case continue,” he said.

In another mob attack, a 31-year-old resident of Shayan-dima died after spending 13 painful days in a hospital bed.

The Shayandima residents had earlier stated that they had had enough of crime and that they would “discipline” anyone who “terrorised” the community.

Thanyani Freddy Masindi was assaulted by the commu-nity during the night of 5 May after it was alleged that he had forcefully gained entry into a woman’s house in Shayandima earlier that day.

During an interview with Limpopo Mirror on Tuesday, the deceased’s mother, Ms Elizabeth Masindi, and the deceased’s sister, Ms Phathut-shedzo Masindi, said the 13 days which Thanyani had spent in hospital were the most painful days of their lives.

“He told us that he was inno-cent and that he had not gone to that woman’s house,” Phathut-shedzo said.

According to what Thanyani had told his family, he was home alone at around 22:30 when he heard a loud noise of

people outside. He could tell it was a large group of drunk men. He heard them say that he needed to be “disciplined” and fear rained on him. He got up and went out through the front door. He then tried to hide under the banana trees.

The mob kicked open the back door and entered the house. “They searched the house, took his cigarettes and left the house,” Phathutshedzo retold her brother’s story.

After some time, Thanyani followed after the men. He called the police and notified them about the incident. He was told to remain on that very spot so that the police could get to him. “In the meantime, he approached the men and asked them why they had come to his home and broke the door,” Pha-thutshedzo said. “They told him about the incident where he was being alleged to have entered a woman’s house. He denied the allegations.”

The group of men, who were all drunk, took him to the wom-an’s house so that she could look at him and confirm whether it was the same man who had forced himself into her house. “When they got there, the wom-an just looked at him and said it was him,” she said.

One of the men then hit him with an object on the back of his head. He felt excruciating pain, turned around and ran away. They shouted “vimba” and sleeping residents responded by coming out to the street. “He explained to us that residents whom he knew assaulted him with pangas, sticks, bricks, and kicked him in the private parts,” she wept. “They searched for some petrol and a tyre so that they could burn him to death. When they could not get those things, they took a thick piece of plastic and set it alight. The melted plastic fell on his back and legs, burning him so pain-fully.”

When they were sure that he was almost dead, they left him

sprawling on the open side of the road.

When she heard about her son’s ordeal, Thanyani’s mother returned home from her work-place in the city. “It is unimag-inable that my very people, my fellow residents, had killed my son,” she said. “He was not caught on the alleged scene of the crime. They came to his home. They had no substantial evidence that he was the crimi-nal in question.”

She added that before he could die in hospital on 18 May, Thanyani had provided the fam-ily and the police with a list of the drunk men who were the first people to attempt to kill him.

Thohoyandou po l i ce ’ s spokesperson, Major Mashudu Malelo said that the police had initially opened a case of assault. “Now that the victim of assault has died, we have opened a case of murder,” he said. “Our investigation team is busy working on this case. No arrests have been made yet.”

Malelo warned community members in the Vhembe dis-trict to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and report all incidents of crimes to the police.

The director of Munna Ndi Nnyi, Mr Bardwell Mufun-waini, condemned the burning of suspected criminals. “This is not the way to go; mob justice will never solve the problem of crime,” he said. “Affected residents must report all crimes to the police, whether the culprit is known or not.”

Residents of Tsianda vil-lage are still in a state of shock after the discovery of the body of 55-year-old Mr Nthambeleni Daniel Mu-dau on Saturday morning.

It was found next to the entrance gate of a well-known local tavern in the Mashamba area with multi-ple stab wounds to the head and neck. According to the spokesperson for the Levubu Police, W/O Solly Mukhola, the police were alerted by the tavern owner after the gruesome discovery of the blood-soaked body next to the gate.

The incident is a matter of great concern to the local residents. That became evi-dent when an urgent meeting of the local civic structures was held at the chief’s kraal shortly after the body had been removed by officials from the SAPS's forensic pathology unit.

Some of the people who attended the meeting in-cluded well-known spiritual leaders Dean Alunamutwe Rannditsheni, Pastor Prince Ramahala and a member of the Safer South Africa Foun-dation, Dean Tshenuwani Farisani. It was resolved at the meeting that an urgent general meeting for all res-idents should be called the following day (Sunday).

Sunday’s meeting was characterized by emotional utterances, with residents threatening to take the law into their own hands and saying they had lost trust in the police services. They cited an incident where a local resident, Mr Emmanuel Matimba, who was arrested for murder towards the end of last year, escaped from police custody in January this year.

During the meeting, the angry residents accused the police of not doing anything, despite the fact that they had been furnished with information that could lead to the arrest of Matimba, who is still at large. It was stated during the meeting that Matimba’s moth-er knew her son’s whereabouts and that her family must be evicted from the village after allega-tions that she was harbouring a sus-pected criminal.

Matimba’s moth-er was summoned to the meeting to answer to the charge of “harbouring a wanted criminal”. The lone mother braved the resi-dents’ anger and

availed herself to the meet-ing. Speaking in full view of hundreds of angry residents, Matimba’s mother stated that she last saw her son on 10 January.

A local traditional leader, Thovhele Vho-Pfuluwani Netsianda, then addressed the residents and appealed to them to be calm and to furnish the police with in-formation that could lead to the arrest of Mudau’s killers.

At the time of our going to press, nobody had been arrested yet and W/O Muk-hola appealed to residents to supply the police with any information that might lead to the arrest of the killers.

More than a decade in jail for a murder he did not commitWhen Marcus Nndateni Mulaudzi (43) was arrested by the police on 26 February 2006, he initially thought it was part of a surrealistic experience. “I thought it was a joke and I didn’t even apply for bail (straight away), because I thought the judge will release me.” More than a decade later he was still waiting in jail, fi ghting to prove his innocence.

On 5 May this year the Supreme Court of Ap-peal in Bloemfontein issued an order, setting aside Mulaudzi’s conviction and related sentence on a charge of murder. The three judges, Theron, Petse and Willis, reached the unanimous conclusion that Mulaudzi had been wrong-fully convicted of murder. The order was delivered last Friday (20th) and after more than 10 years in jail, Mulaudzi was free to continue with his life.

The sad episode in Mulaudzi’s life started in July 2005 when a well-known school principal and councillor, Mr Shavhani Ramusetheli (56), was gunned down at this house at Tshavhalovhedzi near the Siloam hospital. According to an early police report, Mr Ramusetheli arrived home after work and parked his car in the garage. A few minutes later he was attacked by two men while closing the garage door. They hit him with a sharp object on the head and then shot him. He died instantly.

When the deceased’s mother went out to investigate the cause of the noise in the garage, she was hit in the face and she sustained minor injuries. The suspects then fl ed on foot.

Initially the police arrested two suspects, but they were released after being questioned. Following more investigations, four suspects were arrested and the case eventually made its way to the Thohoyandou High Court. On 22 August 2006, Mulaudzi, along with Tshimangadzo Leroy Mushweu, Piet Mudzugu and Samuel Ntshaveni Ndwambi, was convicted of murder and robbery. Mulaudzi was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder and 10 years’ imprisonment in respect of the robbery.

Mulaudzi subsequently applied for leave to appeal, but this application was refused by Judge Hetisani. The long process of taking his case di-rectly to the Supreme Court of Appeal then started.

implicated Mulaudzi in the murder, but apart from this testimony, very little evidence points to his involvement. The court found that Mushweu was untruthful in his evidence and tried to exculpate himself. “But it (High Court) then proceeded to uncritically accept his (Mushweu’s) evidence that incriminated the appellant,” Judge Petze said.

Judge Petze also rejected the High Court’s dismissal of Mulaudzi’s evidence. “In my view, there is nothing inherently improbable about the appellant’s version to warrant its rejection as false beyond reasonable doubt,” the judge said.

The Supreme Court of Appeal’s ruling was wonderful news for Mulaudzi, who had been a

resident at the Sinthu-mule/Kutama maxi-mum security prison for the past ten years. For the fi rst time he could speak freely about the ordeal that robbed him of such a big part

of his life.“During our trial, the Thohoyan-

dou High Court discarded the second accused, Piet Mudzugu’s testimony that I was not involved. An eyewitness, Ramusetheli’s mother, also testifi ed in court that she (only) saw two people, but the

court continued sentencing

me,” he said.“I don’t know why Mushweu mentioned my

name as one of the suspects, because I don’t even know the deceased, Shavhani Ramusetheli’s home,” he said. According to Mulaudzi, he only met Mushweu twice before the incident at Shayan-dima when he was visiting his girlfriend. “I was just a mere taxi driver doing routine rides between Thohoyandou and Shayandima,” he said.

According to Mulaudzi, the incident ruined his life and his relationship with his wife and family members. “I was 32 years old when it happened and my wife left with my son because of my arrest. My other son stopped attending school,” he said. “I lost everything and now have to start afresh.”

Mulaudzi said life in prison had been very stressful. He said it was especially traumatic when he made eye contact with Mushweu in prison and he often found himself crying in the cells. “I was afraid that some inmates would kill me, because no one likes a murderer. I have learnt the hard way that one can die for something you did not do,” he said.

Mulaudzi’s brother believed in his innocence and helped him to lodge an appeal to the Supreme Court in Bloemfontein. “I couldn’t believe it when I stepped out of jail. My family is happy also. My mother, Joyce Mulaudzi, was ill because of my arrest,” he said.

“When I was in jail, I was trained in motor me-chanics, bricklaying and woodwork. I will decide whether to work as a motor mechanic or other trades,” he said.

Mulaudzi mentioned that much has changed in the world since the prison doors slammed shut behind him almost 11 years ago. “During my ar-rest, there were only three malls in Thohoyandou, namely Mvusuludzo, Mutsindo and Venda Plaza. They built the Phangami Mall while I was in prison. Stadiums were built for the 2010 World Cup while I was locked up in jail,” he added. “The worst part is that I don’t know how to use social network sites. What I know is how to send ‘Please call me’ messages only.”

In spite of everything, Mulaudzi has not lost all hope. “The Lord has been with me since my tribu-lations started and I am happy that He has delivered me from the jaws of evil. I will never stop praising Him because He has saved me. I never had and will never take part in destroying life, because I know that it is a wonderful gift from God,” he said.

Mulaudzi was represented by Adv MJ Mpshe (SC) in the case and the attorneys were Mvundlela & Associates from Thohoyandou.

Mapungubwe National Park and World Heritage Site was a hive of activity last Friday, as the park cele-brated International Museum Day as well as Africa month.

The theme of this year’s event was Museums and Cultural Landscapes.

It also served as a platform to raise public awareness on the role museums played in the development of society, said

its spokeswoman, Ms Divhani Marem-ba. She said that Africa Day was also celebrated annually to acknowledge the progress that Africans had made, “while refl ecting upon the common challenges faced in a global environment.”

The event was marked by African attire, dances and beautiful melodies performed by the Mapungubwe choir. SANparks’ cultural and heritage manag-

er, Mr Chrispen Chauke, also addressed the guests on the importance of the celebrations and said museums helped people to transfer knowledge from one generation to another.

“We are the fi rst African Kingdom in South Africa and this knowledge we need to transfer to our children and we can only do that if the rich history is preserved and conserved in museums,” he said.

Pupils from Khungulu Primary School perform the xibelani dance during the celebrations.

The investigations into the Mara escape case revealed that two members of the police who were escorting the suspect from court in March this year were negligent.

The police’s provincial communications officer, Capt Ndidzulafhi Nelufule, said that the police could not reveal the members’ identities to the public, since an internal disciplinary hearing was ongoing.

“The allegations that there is a staff shortage and shortage of resources such as leg shackles, handcuffs and police vans at the police station are unfounded,” Capt Nelufule said. “Every police officer is equipped with a pair of handcuffs and there’s no such thing as a shortage of handcuffs at Mara police station.”

A 25-year-old suspect, David Rhaetsi, escaped from police custody when he was being escorted back to the cells at Mara Police Station. The circumstances around the escape of Rhaetsi still remain vague. He has not been rearrested.

Cllr Sewani Kaunda receives the keys of the newly constructed tourism centre from Mr Chris van der Berg of Matswale Construction.

New tourism information centre to play meaningful role in developing MusinaMatswale Construction recently handed over the newly completed tourism centre to Musina Municipality.

This comes after the council resolved that the old office site had to be vacated to make way for businesses as Musina prepares to become a city in the near future. The arrangement was that the developers would carry all the costs related to the relocation of the centre. The new office is situated next to the N1, just after the off-ramp to Bergview.

The manager responsible for town plan-ning at Musina Municipality, Mr Musiwalo Mphephu, says he is happy that the build-ing adheres to all requirements as per the required legislation. The developer spent R600 000 to construct the art centre, which took three months to complete. The scope of work in the new centre includes a kitchen, ablution facilities, a display area, an office, a boardroom and a reception area. During the construction period, 28 formerly unem-ployed members of the local community were provided with job opportunities.

When receiving the centre from the con-structors, Cllr Sewani Kaunda said that the

office would play a meaningful role in promoting tourism in the Musina municipal area. “Tourism plays a very important role in the economic development of any government. We are happy that our tourists will now have a modern infrastructure where they will be able to get information about Musina and the surrounding areas with ease. That is one of the reasons why we had to build a new building that is modern and user friendly to our people.”

Kaunda thanked the constructors for doing high-quality work in a very short space of time. “It is through their commitment and hard work that we

have this positive end result. The fact that this building is user friendly for disabled people goes a long way in showing that our government cares about its people. We will surely take good care of and maintain the build-ing at all times.”

Representing the constructors, Mr Chris van der Berg stated that it was a pleasure for the company to con-tribute to the economic development of Musina.

“The fact that we created jobs through the construction of the tour-ism office is a true reflection that we also have the love of this town at heart.”

Minister Des van Rooyen was warmly welcomed by residents of Ha-Davhana and nearby Shan-gaan villages when they recently visited the area.

According to a spokesperson for residents of the area, the task team spoke of service delivery and peace and stability in the area. "Residents from Mabidi, Davhana-Balanganani, Sundani, Bofulamato, Nngwekhulu, Tshirululuni, Ramalige-la-Gabeni, Makhasa, Madobi and Kuruleni strongly support the formation of the new municipality," he spokesperson said.

According to him, the mentioned communities said that the Makhado municipality had failed to provide proper services to them. They also support-ed the idea of the task team to allow the learners affected by the violence and burning of schools to go back to school.

The residents also strongly warned people who intimidated pupils who want to continue with their studies to stop, or they will face the law, he add-ed. According to him, the different communities strongly condemn tribalism.

Suspected criminals survive “mob justice” attackMob justice is fast becoming a way of life for residents of Vhembe, who say they are tired of crime being committed in their area.

In recent months, numerous incidents of mob justice, where criminals met the wrath of the com-munity and received instant justice, were reported in the Thohoyandou shopping complex and the surrounding villages.

Residents in these areas, who have had enough of crime, have vowed to do it in their own style and take the law into their own hands, instead of reporting crimes to police.

In one of the most recent and most shocking in-cidents in Thohoyandou, a man notoriously known for being a ruthless robber and killer, who did as he

wished, was attacked by an angry mob at one of the busiest taxi ranks in town. He was allegedly caught robbing an elderly woman of her purse and cell phone.

The man was attacked with a variety of weapons and was torched alive as he begged for mercy. He was killed in the incident.

Two weeks ago, just about the whole town came to a standstill as shoppers rushed to a scene where a suspected car thief was caught in the act next to Absa Mutsindo Mall. Eyewitnesses said the man had al-ready opened a car belonging to an unidentified woman and was about to speed off when he was accosted by suspicious shoppers. After try-ing to run away, he was caught by the mob and that was when all hell broke loose.

He was attacked with anything that the shoppers could lay their hands on and, just as the angry mob was about to set him alight, security guards of the complex took him away to a building at the complex.

They summoned the police, who came but were not able to take the man away as the angry shoppers bayed for the man’s life.

The police then fired rubber bul-lets at the angry shoppers, who had by then threatened to burn the alleged thief alive.

They were able to load the alleged criminal into a police nyala. Those at the scene blamed the police for “pro-tecting criminals”. Several agitated shoppers said that the police “should have left him to us, so that we could sort him out, but they protected him. Our message is loud and clear: we

won’t tolerate this and criminals should beware as we won’t have mercy on them”.

Thohoyandou police spokes-person Major Mashudu Malelo confirmed the incident and further said that two more incidents had occurred during the weekend in Tho-hoyandou. He said in the incident that happened next to Absa, two of their vehicles were damaged during the fracas with angry shoppers. Ac-cording to him, thousands of rands worth of damage was caused to the vehicles.

“We have opened a mal i -cious-damage-to-property [case] in the first incident and there are no arrests so far. No case was registered against the alleged thief as no one came forward to open a case,” said Malelo.

He said the second incident hap-pened on Saturday afternoon next to the plaza taxi rank, when a man tried to run away with groceries be-longing to an old woman. “Residents gave chase and only the arrival of security guards, who took the man away, saved him from certain death as shoppers wanted to necklace him. On Sunday, a man believed to be be-hind the spate of robberies and other crimes was also nearly necklaced by angry community members.”

He added that mob justice was becoming a headache for the police. “Please report all crimes to us and we will take it from there. We strongly condemn acts of mob justice as it puts the victims and those involved on par with criminals, with both breaking the law and being liable for arrest.”

The lucky survivor who missed death by a whisker is being taken away to a police nyala.

Police had their hands full in trying to keep at bay the angry crowd that pelted stones and other objects at vans and police officials.

“Encourage the people to be proud of their culture”Hundreds of people gathered at the Makuleke soccer grounds last Satur-day to celebrate Africa Day. The event was organized by the Department of Arts and Culture and the Minister of Communications, Ms Faith Muthabi, was the guest speaker.

Muthambi, who was dressed in tra-ditional Tsonga attire, addressed the gathering in Xitsonga. She said that the government was happy that the com-munity of Makuleke and other areas in Vhembe recognised Africa Day. She said she was also happy to see people dressed in Tsonga and Venda traditional attire,

which showed that they were proud of their culture.

“Gone are the days when people were mocked for wearing their traditional attire. There was time when a person wearing xibelane was regarded as a non-believer. But today we encourage our people to be proud of their culture and tradition,” said Muthambi, adding that Africans must always be united and live as one.

Foundation’s mission is to restore vision

Appeal to community to donate more blood

Children across the world struggling with their eyesight are still reaping the benefits of one man’s vision to make a difference in their lives.

Koen van Pottelbergh, an op-tometrist from Belgium, and his team from Eyes For The World (EFTW), a non-profit foundation he started, has one goal in life - to help improve people’s eyesight. He and his team were first wel-comed to the Soutpansberg by Louis Trichardt’s Agora Club Amarula ladies in April last year. In partnership with their sister club in Belgium (Agora Lokeren Belgium), they invited Koen as part of an international support project.

During the EFTW team’s visit last year, Agora Club Am-arula tested 1 068 children and gave out 120 sets of spectacles from EFTW. Coupled with this, Sanrie du Plessis from the local Specsavers branch also bought into this project and subsequently provided 15 children with pre-scription glasses for eye prob-lems ranging from astigmatism to more serious eye conditions such as keratosis.

The EFTW project entails testing children’s eyes and giv-ing them a pair of spectacles if needed. But these aren’t just ordinary spectacles. They are the product of years of research and development, allowing Koen and his team to hand each child in need thereof a pair of spectacles within five minutes after testing starts – at no charge and with no waiting period to have the spec-tacles made.

For this purpose, Koen makes

use of adjustable spectacles (Adspecs) or focussed spectacles (Focusspecs). These spectacles were specifically developed for this project. With the Ad-specs, high-quality silicone gel is pumped in between two durable plastic membranes. It allows for 50 optical variants, all pos-sible in one pair of spectacles. Focusspecs, on the other hand, make use of an adjustable slide lens system whereby two lenses are slid across each other to the required magnification.

Following Koen’s visit last year and a promise to return to the region, much has happened to give the project momen-tum worldwide. The successful teamwork between Agora Club Lokeren (who fundraised for this project), Agora Club Amarula (who carried out this project in Elim last year) and Koen and his EFTW team, inspired Veerle de Jonge from Agora Club Belgium and Sandy van Niekerk from Agora Club South Africa to moti-vate this project as an Agora Club International Project. The team-work between these three parties also inspired Agora ladies from 18 other countries to adopt this project and start raising funds to help children in underprivileged countries.

As conveners of the Agora EFTW project, both Veerle and Sandy have been inspired by the overwhelming support. Subse-quently, Agora Club Morocco held a very successful project where they screened over 1 000 learners and handed out 250 pairs of focusspecs with the help of Agora Club International coun-

tries, who raised the necessary funds. Agora Club Madagascar has also recently screened learn-ers and identified those with eyesight problems. They now await a visit from the EFTW team. Closer to home, Agora Club Botswana is next in line and will be screening children in September when Koen and the EFTW come back to Africa and to the Soutpansberg.

Agora Club Amarula has, however, not rested on its laurels while awaiting the EFTW team’s return to the Soutpansberg. On 10 May they visited the Tshiitwa Secondary School in Masham-ba, where they screened 135 learners. Sanrie and Specsavers co-worker Patrick Muleya again joined the Agora ladies. Through this project, 12 learners received focusspecs on site, while 15 have been diagnosed with astigmatism and one with keratosis. These children will soon be issued with spectacles. They were also able to help three children with seri-ous eye infections by providing them with the medication and ointments

“A huge thank you must go to the principal of Tshiitwa Sec-ondary School Mr Ramusilei, as well as educator Mr Mashamba, for receiving us so well and for the obvious care and interest they take in the wellbeing of their learners. This project would also not be possible without the support of the Limpopo De-partment of Education and Mrs Nelly Tklakula, as well as with the amazing support of Sanrie and Patrick from Louis Trichardt Specsavers,” said Sandy.

With winter upon us, the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) anticipates that blood stocks will fall below the desired level required for meeting daily demand.

To ensure that a sufficient supply of blood re-mains available for recipients affected by different medical conditions, the SANBS must collect 3000 units of blood every day. Each unit of blood could save three lives. “In addition to hiding away from the blistering cold, donor numbers usually slump over this period because schools close over the holiday period and that is where many blood drives take place. Colds and flu are other reasons for do-nors’ being unable to donate blood,” says SANBS communications manager Vanessa Raju.

According to the SANBS, high-school learners are a crucial group of donors. Nationally, says the SANBS, teenagers aged 16 to 19 constitute 21% of SANBS’ total active donor base, which is currently over 430 000. They have taken the bold step to join the many men and women who go out of their way to donate blood and lifetimes that can be lived to

the fullest. “These young people are truly exem-plary South Africans and while they are away from school to enjoy a well-deserved break, we could run into some shortages, which will put our ability to serve the public under pressure,” says Raju.

SANBS urges all donors to honour their donation schedule and encourage their friends, family and colleagues to join them and become regular donors if they meet the basic requirements. “Our doors are open to members of the public who either want to start donating or simply have questions about the donation process, which might seem complicated and daunting for those who have never before considered giving blood,” says Raju.

For more information on how to become a blood donor and to find your nearest donor centre, visit www.sanbs.org.

The ladies from Agora Club Amarula have not rested on their laurels while awaiting the Eyes For The World team’s return to the Soutpansberg. On 10 May they visited the Tshiitwa Secondary School in Mashamba, where they screened 135 learners. Pictured here with one of the recipients of a new pair of spectacles are (from left to right) Amarula members Diane Bannatyne, Laura van Zyl, Sandy van Niekerk and Angela Brennan. Photo supplied.

Most people listen to music play-ing on radio stations and get to respect the presenter, because of the quality of the music which that presenter plays.

People hardly think or even pay attention to the fact that there was someone who specially focused on compiling that quality music for a specifi c show on radio. A talented technician at Phalaphala FM, Rofhiwa “Ramsy” Ramp-fumedzi, is also a music compiler who has a keen ear for sound.

A resident of Tshakhuma, Rof-hiwa told Limpopo Mirror that he had grown up surrounded by different genres of music at home and that was the reason why he had a deep love of music. “When I had reached high school level, I developed a stronger sense of love towards music,” he said. “Even though I did not have a noticeable aptitude for making music, I had this unquenchable fi re that kept music alive in my soul.”

He confessed that his love for soccer nearly made him leave school for good. “I loved soccer a lot, and I was nearly swayed from school by my involvement in soccer,” he said. “I played with big names who are now playing in the PSL. However, at some stage my family was worried about my loving soccer and focusing on it so much, because they wanted me to have some education.”

After com-pleting his

Grade 12, Rofhiwa went to study sound engineering at Pretoria College. Sometimes he would go to Rainbow FM studios and ask presenters and technicians a lot of questions about the radio industry. “They were all keen to answer and provide me with all the relevant, helpful information,” he said.

“After completing my qualifi ca-tion, I went to ask for a job at the Rainbow FM and I was offered a part-time slot as a technician. My duties were to compile music.” At some stage he decided to come back home to Limpopo, so that he might contribute towards building up his province as a technician in the radio journalism industry.

“I fi nally joined Univen FM as a music compiler,” he said. “Later on I was made a programme man-ager and acting station manager.” He saw an advert for an opportu-nity at Phalaphala FM. “I applied like everyone else and I was lucky enough to get an opportunity to become a music compiler,” he said. “When I got to PhalaPhala FM, I was also appointed as a sports chairperson for Limpopo SABC.”

He urged the youth to focus on education instead of quiting school and chasing monetary op-

portunities that might fade at any time. “Go

all out and get education as a backbone, be-

cause without edu-cation you will get

nowhere in life,” he said.

The communities in the Giyani area will benefi t from a newly opened Nyukani Education Cen-tre, which is the fi rst school in the area to offer visual arts as one of the subjects.

A resident of Nkovani village in Malamulele and president of the South African Institute of Auction-eers, Mr Tirhani Mabunda, had set up a state-of-the-art school at Nko-mo village outside Giyani town.

“I had worked twice as hard and managed to establish myself as a reputable businessman and community builder, but having set up a school of this nature is the best milestone that I have achieved,” he said. “We also aim to partner with education institutions international-ly and consultations are being held in that regard.”

Mabunda said that the school’s management had high ambitions for the school and was aiming to go digital after beefi ng up security at the school. The school offers sci-ence, business and visual arts from the primary to the secondary level.

Klein Letaba circuit manager Ms Shoni Mantshumele said that the Department of Education wel-comed the school and urged that the school must strive to meet the educational standards.

“The parents are digging deep into their pockets to send their children to the school and we will support you,” she said.

The advisor to the vice-rector and principal of the University of Pretoria, Prof Tinyiko Maluleke, the guest speaker, praised Mabunda and said that a host of youths was going to benefi t from the school. “You are commended for investing in the future of kids while many parents invest in their deaths and funerals,” he said.

Hosi Aaron Mahumani said that the educational initiative was a great milestone because it was a school that aligned itself as part of the global village. “The founders must be commended for their pas-sion to do what they love and to love what they do, which is to uplift their communities,” Nkomo said.

The management of the Khoroni Hotel and Casino recently realised that they should have understanding for their customers’ needs. According to a spokesperson, the necessity for cutting-edge equipment is growing in every sphere of technology. With this awareness, Khoroni is advancing with new popular and exciting games. Fifteen new slot machines with various game options are now available to their customers. Photo supplied.

The Makhado Show Grounds will come to life when a colourful contin-gent of artists arrive in town for the second annual Africa Day Reggae Fes-tival (ADAFRE) tomorrow (Saturday).

The festival, which is organised by AfreeCa Resort, provides a sound devel-opment platform for the growing demand of African entertainment and crafts that continue to be ignored by mainstream promoters and exhibitors in South Afri-ca, said the event producer, Murendeni Ramunenyiwa.

“We also believe that it is high time that rural South Africa takes advantage of the sleeping giant that is the cultural economy to solve socio-economic prob-lems affecting our country,” he said. According to Ramunenyiwa, the one-day event will provide platforms for local

bands, arts and culture groups to show-case their crafts while intergrating the diverse cultures, their rich unique tradi-tional practices, historical inheritance and traditional food through the arts.

“The festival will bring trade to the rural areas, thus fast-tracking the much-needed community development and empowerment for local communities through the arts and culture,” he said. “We also want to sustain this event, so that the local arts businesses continue to have viable opportunities annually. There is a Grahamstown National Arts Festival, so we need to create that kind of a project right here in Louis Trichardt, and also make sure that we sustain the project.”

Ramunenyiwa indicated that the main stage would feature live performances by artists such as the reggae legend Colbert Mukwevho, P-Postman, Kenny Marabi, JahMan Tshiganzha, Ras Humbu, Ras

Mulweli, Ras Ntshenge, Code, Ken-ny Marabi, P-PostMan, Muofhe, Ras Nethomboni, Khakhathi, BlackJahman, and Ras Father. The festival also aims to provide a platform for performance to local artists by sharing the stage with artists from other provinces as well. “We know that music is a universal language,” Ramunenyiwa said.

On the other hand, the festival will bring heavyweights such as the Durban Nyts, Mizo, Niprol, Da. L.E.S, Don P, Nicodermic, Listo-SA, Lil’Archie, Ram-zee, Ndi Yellow Mah, Amila Decious, Gintonic Da Colly, Catcher, Dezazo. The MCs of the day are Jimmy da Scratcher and Cody.Tickets are available through Com-puticket at R40. However, they are also available at the gate at R50 per head, VIP R100, and VVIP R350. The gates open at 12:00.

About 50 people living with disabilities recently converged at the Nancefield community hall in Musina to attend an HIV/Aids awareness cam-paign. It was organized by the South African National Association of the Blind and Partially Sighted People (SANABP).

SANBP is a non-governmental organization that falls under the aupices of the South African National Council for the Blind. It serves, supports and facilitates the prevention of blindness, rehabil-itation, community development, training and edu-cation of South Africans with visual impairments and other forms of disabilities. Musina SANABP has members who are not only blind or partially blind but others with various kinds of disabilities.

Mr Bernard Makhubele of SANABP said that the initiative would not only benefit people living

SANABP organises HIV awareness at Musinawith disabilities, but would also go a long way in sharing knowledge on how to prevent HIV and to respect the rights of those living with and affected by the disease. “It is important to note that people living with the disease can still live a healthy life. The best way is to accept your condition and follow the doctors’ orders,” he said.

Cllr Fistos Mafela from Musina Municipality said disabled people deserved to be treated with love and respect. “The challenges that we as a country are facing in relation to HIV and AIDS also affect people living with disabilities. We all have the responsibility to help one another to fight this virus. I believe that this campaign will go a long way in protecting our community, especially those living with disabilities,” he added.

A community members who attended the awareness campaign, Ms Sarah Chauke, said that she was happy to note that people living with disabilities in Mu-sina were cared for and loved by the communi-ty. “HIV & AIDS are real, and people living with disabilities are the most vulnerable, espe-cially women because in most cases men take advantage of their situ-ation and abuse them.”

Achievement

Young leader off to the United StatesA 30-year-old social entrepreneur, Basil Maba-sa, has been chosen to participate in the 2016 Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders programme.

This energetic young man is a founding mem-ber of Hlanganani FM and a resident of N’wa-matatani village.

He will arrive in the United States on 17 June and spend at least six weeks at the Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. The aim of the academic study is to provide the par-ticipants with a platform to hone leadership skills. Participants will network with other young leaders from sub-Saharan Africa and the United States.

“My late mom used to tell me that if things did not go my way, I must do it their way,” he said. “We all start at the bottom and the only time you start at the top is when you are digging the hole to entrap yourself.”

In 2008, Mabasa went to the UK on a global exchange programme, which was sponsored by the British Council and the University of Witwatersrand. “When I came back, I started my company, Xisasi Business Consultants, in 2009,” he said. “In 2010, I was part of the Lib-erty Life Learnership Programme, which lasted for a year. After that I went back to do my own business because I had realised that working was not my thing.”

He lost his mother, Ms Nancy Xisasi Mahlaule, to breast cancer in 2009. His mother’s death had pained him a lot and he did not want to see more women dying from cancer-related problems. He then started Xisasi Cancer Foundation in honour of his late mother.

“Cancer can be treated and cured if it is detect-ed at an early stage,” he said. “In my project, I wanted to focus on empowering women on issues of cancer detection and treatment.”

After his academic residency, he will partici-pate in a three-day Mandela Washington Fellow-

ship Summit hosted by Pres Barack Obama. He will interact with US leaders in the fields of busi-ness, government and the non-profit sector. “In the US, I will interact with a lot of young people and experienced project co-ordinators, and from all those people I will learn more information and expertise to help us take Xisasi Cancer Foundation to the next level,” he said.

Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders is the flagship programme of Pres Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI).

“I hope my achievement can inspire other young people,” Mabasa said. “I hope this will show them that it doesn’t matter where you come from, you can go and become anything you want to be. I was raised by a domestic worker, but that never stopped me from dreaming of shining on the world stage. Being born in poverty is not your choice, but dying there is.”

Mr Basil Mabasa.

As the dry winter months are upon the region, the news that the Makhado Fire Station is once again functional serves to warm the hearts of residents.

Recently it was reported that the staff had no fi re trucks avail-able to deal with emergencies. Their last available truck was damaged beyond repair in an accident on Friday, 18 March. While on duty near the Vuwani Fire Training Centre and Fire Station, the driver of the fi re truck allegedly swerved to avoid run-ning over a pedestrian crossing

the road. The truck left the road and overturned.

The only other fi re truck the Makhado station owns has been in the repair shop for well over a year after its gearbox reportedly broke down.

About two weeks ago, the Makhado station’s fl eet was sup-plemented with a fi re truck from the Malamulele station. This means that the Makhado Station once again has a fully function fi re truck. The other truck has yet to be repaired.

As far as the newspaper was ab le to de -termine, the

faulty gearbox is in such a state that it should rather be replaced in its entirety than just repaired. In the meantime, the newspaper tried again to follow up with the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) in the hope of finally getting some answers from them. In particular, the newspaper again enquired about a promise the VDM had made last year to provide new emergency vehicles to the Makhado fi re station and others in the region.

At our time of our going to press, the VDM spokesperson, Mr Matodzi Ralushai, had yet to respond.

Agricultural awareness at Tshiavha SchoolThe Department of Agricul-ture and Rural Development (DARD) hosted an agricultur-al-awareness day at Tshivha Primary School in Nzhelele last Wednesday.

The event was attended by pupils from the surroundings schools and the region's tradi-tional leaders. According to the organisers, the aim of the event was to inform pupils about the value of agriculture. The pupils were also encouraged to adopt permaculture principles.

The school has adopted a per-maculture system in its garden in an attempt to fi ght the drought. An agricultural advisor, Ms Rudzani Mulaudzi, said that the use of permaculture "guides us to mimic the patterns and relation-ships we can fi nd in nature and

can be applied to all aspects of human habitation". She empha-sised that young pupils should be taught the importance of agriculture.

A teacher from Tshiavha, Mr David Kwinda, said that they started planting vegetables at the school earlier this year. He also said that they practised conser-vation agriculture, crop rotation and mulching. “We practise the use of mulch because we want to conserve moisture, improve the fertility and health of the soil, reduce weed growth and enhance the visual appeal of the area,” he said. He also mentioned that they had planted indigenous plants and ornamental fl owers to prevent insects from destroying the vegetables. The pupils were also taught about the importance

of insects and how they improve soil fertility.

The c i rcui t manager of Nzhelele East, Mr David Ram-utsheli, said the school felt very honoured to host this kind of awareness drive and appreciated the good work that DARD was doing for the school.

“This awareness will instil agricultural knowledge in our pu-pils and also educate them about the importance of permaculture gardens,” he said.

Mr Calvin Rannenyeni from DARD said that the department acknowledged the dedication that the school was showing towards agriculture. “Working together with the pupils, we can achieve more in the quest to fi ght against drought and climate change,” said Rannenyeni.

The clean-up campaign in Ward 5 of Musina Municipality was a huge success.

As part of preserving a clean environment, employees from Musina Municipality and local community members embarked on a clean-up cam-paign in Ward 5 a fortnight ago.

The campaign started in Nancefi eld Extension 8, oppo-site the boys shelter of the Unit-ed Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The principle of teach them young was high-lighted, when young children from the nearby Shanduka Day Care Centre, accompanied by Principal Brenda Ndou, also joined the campaign.

Before the actual campaign started, local ward councillor Ms Nkele Milanzi emphasized

the importance of keeping the environment clean. “We urge our community members not to litter, but instead use the skip bins provided by the munici-pality to dispose of waste. Unat-tended waste causes a bad smell, which contaminates oxygen and it also attract fl ies and rats. Let us keep our environment clean because it has many benefi ts for the future generations.

Leaving waste unattended has many disadvantages, including driving investors away from our town.”

The manager of waste man-agement, parks and recreation in the Musina Municipality, Ms Rendani Kutama, said that the campaign formed part of

the municipality’s initiative to keep Musina clean. “We see it as necessary to have these types of campaigns timeously, because some of our community members are living in unclean surroundings. We also want our people to know the importance of waste and how to manage it.”

One of the community mem-bers who took part in the cam-paign, Mt Lufuno Matsa, said that being part of the campaign made him happy because he was contributing to making Musina a better place to stay.

“I encourage other commu-nity members to participate in future clean-up campaigns as it has many benefits for our society.”

Children also part of Kremetart action TNN third in promotional play-offsThe region’s budding young cycling stars can start entering for the popular KFC Kids Race as part of the annual Kremetart Cycling weekend.

The cycling weekend is one of the region’s big-gest annual sporting events, coming up on 4 and 5 June. Saturday will see cyclists from across South Africa take part in the gruelling but extremely pop-ular 175km stage road race, as well as a 70km race. The weekend will draw to a close on Sunday with the hosting of the Kremetart XCO. High School Louis Trichardt’s Leeupark will play host to Sat-urday’s programme, while Komatiland plantation plays host to the XCO on Sunday.

The race organisers have not, however, forgotten about the youngsters. The kids race, sponsored by KFC, the Soutpansberg Cycling Club, Ladies Circle

4 and Soutpansberg Youth Cycling Development, will once again form part of the programme on 4 June. Youngsters can participate in six different age groups, namely a 60m ride for 2- to 3-year-olds and a 100m ride for both the 4- to 5-year-olds and 6- to 7-year-olds (with an entry fee of R50 per cyclist for all three races), as well as a two-, three- and four-lap race for the U/10s, U/12s and U/14s respectively. For the last three races, the entry fee is R100 per cyclist.

Youngsters who want to test their mettle can register to compete on the day of the race from 08:00 until 12:00, as per race. The six races, from youngest to oldest, will start at 11:30, 12:00, 12:30, 14:00, 14:30 and 15:00 respectively.

Medals will be handed out to all race fi nishers, as well as bonus prizes for mini XCO riders. Cash prizes for both boys and girls will be handed out for fi rst- to fi fth-place winners. There is also a R1 000 cash prize up for grabs for the school or pre-school with the most entries. But don’t wait too long to enter as only the fi rst 250 entries will receive goody bags.

“Come on, kids! Dare to spoil mom and dad with a fun-fi lled day,” invite the organisers.

For more informa-tion, phone Ciska from Ladies Circle 4 as race organisers at 083 686 1530 or race director Stanley Thompson at 082 493 3897. Entry forms are also available from Riana Otto at Tel 084 400 9941.

Tshakhuma Na Ndilani (TNN) beat Rambuda Young Fighters 5-3 in their losers’ fi nal match for the Safa Vhembe promo-tional play-offs at the Thohoy-andou Stadium on Sunday.

Their fast forward, Dakalo “Akonkwo” Nemakonde, had his chance four minutes into the game. He received a good pass from Rolivhuwa Mukwevho and unleashed from the edge of the box, but was not on target. Young Fighters then regrouped from behind, making life diffi cult for the TNN midfi elders.

TNN opened their account in the 26th minute when Khathut-shelo “Adebayo” Mudau beat the keeper, following a great pass from Gift Nemutandani. Fighters equalised in the74th minute from the penalty spot, when their frontrunner, Humphrey Netshivhongweni, was brought down within the box. Pfunzo Tshikovhi converted from the white spot.

Rolivhuwa Mukwevho of TNN was given his marching orders, following an ugly tackle on Awelani Mphigalale.

The winner was determined through penalty shoot-out. TNN converted four of their chances through Gift Nemutandani, Oscar Ntshauba, Maduvha Matodzi and the 13-year-old Maboho Nevari, while Fighters scored three. TNN were presented with bronze medals during a ceremony at the stadium later in the evening.

This is what we call football development! The chairperson of the Safa Vhembe competitions committee, Mr Eric Muneri, congratulates the youngest player in the tournament, Maboho Nevari (13) of TNN, after their game against Rambuda Young Fighters. Maboho scored the winning penalty for TNN.

Members of Baroka FC celebrate being crowned champions after their NFD match against Milano at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday. Photo: Sydney Mahlangu/ BackpagePix.

While Baroka FC are celebrat-ing their automatic promo-tion to the Absa Premiership Division, Jomo Cosmos are contemplating a new life in the National First Division, following their automatic rel-egation from the Premiership Division.

Baroka finished their league programme on top of the NFD log, making them an automatic candidate for promotion to the elite league. Their promotion did not come as a surprise, as they were leading the pack right from the beginning of the season nine months ago.

The Polokwane side needed at least one point in their league

match against Milano United at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium last Sunday to secure a place in the Absa Premiership Division. The final score was 1-1. Baroka finished the league program with 60 points, one ahead of Highlands Park.

Highlands Park and the third-placed side, Mbombela United, together with the team that finished in the second-last po-sition in the Absa Premiership, the University of Pretoria, will partake in the promotional play-off matches.

The team that will finish on top in the promotional play-offs will also be promoted to the Premiership Division. Should

Amatuks fail to make the grade in the promotional play-offs, they will finally be relegated to the NFD, where they will rub shoulders with the likes of Black Leopards, Witbank Spurs and Cape Town All Stars.

It is also official that Moroka Swallows, once the pride of Dube, Soweto, have been rele-gated once again. The “Birds” will be campaigning in the ABC Motsepe League come next season.

Moroka Swallows completed their league programme at the bottom of the NFD with 24 points. African Warriors will accompany Swallows to the lower division.

Baroka FC through to premier leagueAfter suffering a 1-2 home defeat at the hands of Santos at the Thohoyandou Stadi-um two weeks ago, Black Leopards made amends and collected full points at the ex-pense of another Cape Town side, Vasco da Gama, in Cape Town on Sunday.

Leopards won 1-0 at the Parow Park Stadium, with Ndamulelo Mungadi scoring the all-important winning goal in the 22nd minute.

The unexpected happened at the Makhulong Stadium in

Thembisa, where Highlands Park crushed Amazulu 4-1. Mbombela United finished their league programme on a high note, following their 1-0 victory over Cape Town All Stars at the Kanyamazane Stadium in Nelspruit. Thanda Royal Zu-lu’s 3-2 victory over African Warriors was good enough to ensure that Thanda retain their NFD status. Boikanyo Komane, Michael Gumede and Sonke Ntuli scored for Thanda, while Warriors scored via Thamsanga Ngema and Katlego Maphathe.

Witbank Spurs were too strong for Moroka Swallows, whom they brutally walloped 5-1 at the Puma Rugby Stadium in Emalahleni.

Edwin Shitayitayi scored Swallows’ solitary goal, while Cleopas Dube, Mahlatse Mthabine (brace), Patrick Mu-bayiwa and Bongani Shabalala scored Spurs' goals.

Mthatha Bucks lost 1-3 to Royal Eagles, while FC Cape Town beat Santos 2-1 at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town.

The IBO Welterweight World champion, Tsiko “Cruel” Junior Mulovhedzi, is complaining about not receiving his full payment after beating the Mexican boxer, Jesus Gurrola, last month at the Ngoako Ramatlhodi sport complex in Seshego.

Mulovhedzi further alleges that he is not the only boxer who has not been paid in full. He said that they were expected to sign contracts, but the contracts did not go into specifics as to when they would be paid.

The Limpopo-based boxer said in an interview this week that he was excited when he was offered the contract to take part in the tournament. “I started buying things and creating debts; now all my debts have bounced back. I am a full-time boxer, but I am still suffering the pain of not being paid the full amount of my money,” he said.

According to Mulovhedzi, the promoters are taking them for granted. “This is not the first time this has happened, and when we ask, we are not given straight answers. This is not fair,” he said.

Mulovhedzi said that he was going to write a letter of complaint to the boxing association. He has also parted ways with his promoter, Mr Ayanda Matiti. The contract between them, according to Mulovhedzi, expired last month. Matiti denied the allegations that Mulovhedzi had not received his full payment. He said that Mulovhedzi had been paid as per the agreement.

The chairperson of Boxing South Africa (BSA), Ms Muditambi Ravele, said that BSA was inves-tigating the matter. Ravele further stated that they were in the process of tightening the rules for the application of a promoter’s license.

Some of the Thulamela local municipality's councilors were photographed surrounding the mayor, Cllr Grace Mahosi when she cut the ribbon to symbolise the official opening of the streets in Thohoyandou.

The dusty and muddy streets of Mbale-ni, Magidi and Thohoyandou Block F will soon be a thing of the past, thanks to completed a R171 million tarred road.

Speaking during the recent official opening of the road at Makwarela town hall, Mayor Grace Mahosi of Thulamela said that the handing over of a good tarred road should mean that the residents must take care of it. “Don’t burn tires on these roads.

You have ownership, and protect them, so that we can move forward and construct roads at other villages," she said.

She referred to service delivery pro-tests and said that, should there be any dissatisfaction within communities about any matter, the residents should speak to their elected municipal councillors for assistance.

According to Mahosi, the completion of the project, consisting of two roads, brings huge relief to motorists and communities

in the affected areas and the municipality was excited about it. The project, which started some two years ago, was complet-ed within the projected time frame. The upgraded roads included Unit E (formerly Magidi), Makwarela Extension 3, Mbaleni Makwarela Extension 4 and the Tshibevha link road in Thohoyandou.

The total distance of all these projects upgraded from gravel to tarred road is about 17 kilometres

Ms Florence Dzivhani of Unit E (Magi-di) was over the moon to find out that her community will no longer have to worry during heavy rains as the muddy roads will be a thing of the past. “Our streets were dusty, and during heavy rains they became muddy and our people were struggling to get to work and learners could not go to school. Motorists used to suffer and their vehicles were damaged quickly, due to the potholes,” said Dzivhani.

“Please take care of your new road”

Local cycling star Kombo Bere of Louis Trichardt will soon get the chance to compare his skills to those of cyclists at interna-tional level.

Last week, this local cyclist received his official invite to represent Zimbabwe in the up-coming World MTB Champion-ships as part of their mountain biking team.

The world championships are set to take place at the Nove Mestro na Morave in the Czech Republic from 28 June until 3 July. It was not an easy feat as cyclists can participate by invitation only, after their UCI (world ranking) points have been scrutinized.

“I will represent Africa, not merely Zimbabwe or South Africa,” said the Grade 12 pupil of Louis Trichardt High School. “It is one of the greatest honours to get to represent your province and country at the highest level,” he added.

Not many know this about Kombo, but he was actually born in Zimbabwe. Shortly after his birth, his family came to South Africa and settled in Cape Town. His father is a professor at the University of Venda, and his mother is a stay-at-home mom who looks after his younger brother.

During 2013, the family relo-cated to Louis Trichardt. It was in this time, at the age of 15, that Kombo’s natural talent for cycling was discovered, and ever since then Kombo has dominated the local cycling scene, clinching various podium places.

Apart from local accolades, Kombo also boasts other vic-tories, such as being second

overall during the Three Towers Stage Race in 2014, Limpopo U/18 mountain and road-bike champion (in the same year) and the 2015 U/18 Limpopo Cham-pion for XCO mountain-bike and half-marathon racing.

Being selected to participate in the upcoming world champi-onships as part a national team is certainly a dream come true for Kombo. One of his goals is to be able to participate in the 2020 World Olympic Games.

But how does he prepare for all this?

“Hard work, and then some more hard work,” was the simple answer from Kombo.

Apart from balancing a heavily loaded school c u r r i c u l u m , Kombo also follows a spe-cially formu-lated training p r o g r a m m e compiled by the South Af-rican Sport In-stitute. This en-tails two days a week in the school’s fitness centre with Fe-lix Malan to strengthen his core.

A big part of his exercise programme is participating in local rac-es. One such a race will be t h e u p c o m -ing Kremetart 175km one-day stage race.

“Believe it or not, but the Kreme-tart will help Kombo’s fitness peak, so that he will be able to perform his best during the cham-pionships,” explained mentor and fellow trainer Stanley Thompson.

Kombo will cycle in the Kremetart as part of the Limpo-po Tac-Pulse Team, the first ever local pro-cycling team. After this, he will focus on finalizing last-minute details for his trip to Nove Mestro na Morave, for which he has a part of the funds necessary. But help and assis-tance are always welcome from local businesses and sponsors. Stanley can be contacted at Tel 082 493 3897 for more informa-tion on this.

Floor hockey team of Tshilwavhusiku qualify for Special Winter Olympics

The pupils of Tshilwavhusiku Razwimisani Special School who will represent South Africa at the International World Special Games in Austria.

Tshilwavhusiku Razwimisani Special School will represent South Africa in the World Spe-cial Oympics Winter Games in Austria next year. This came after they recently won the gold medal in the national floor hockey championship in Gauteng.

The coordinator of the Spe-cial Olympics in Limpopo, Mr Samuel Maduwa, said that they were extremely proud of their athletes. “Everyone demonstrat-

ed the Special Olympics' spirit of being brave at every attempt and participating to the best of their ability.” He added that children with disabilities must no longer be hidden in their homes, side-lined in society and treated as secondary citizens. “It is high time that everyone must join hands to ensure that children with disabilities have the same opportunities as other children.”

He said that this was not the first time that a Limpopo team

would represent South Africa on the world stage. In 2009, players of Tshilwavhusiku and Grace of Love participated in the USA and in 2013 Grace of Love went to South Korea.

Maduwa appealed to Good Samaritans to help the pupils of Tshilwavhusiku Razwimisani Special School and sponsor their track suits for the 2017 Games in Austria. People interested can phone the coach, Ms Selaelo Thulare, at 076 7843 289.

Madridtas to represent VhembeMadridtas FC will represent the Vhembe region in the SAB League provincial play-off matches that will be staged at the Seshego Stadium next Sat-urday. They beat United Art-ists 7-6 in their regional fi nal at the Thohoyandou Stadium on Sunday.

The Madridtas killer striker, Eethe Khaukanani, could not live up to the fans’ expectation as he was tightly marked. The only time he threatened to score was in the eighth minute when his long-range volley hit the woodwork and bounced out of the fi eld of play.

After surviving an early scare, United Scientists started to dis-

play entertaining football with their dribbling wizard, Thomas “Razor” Makhubele, distributing defence-splitting passes to the frontrunners.

Madridtas effected an early change to the starting line-up when they replaced Luambo Mudau with Maanda Munyai in the 14th minute. Munyai was a marvel to watch as he forced the

Artists’ defenders to perform overtime through his dribbling skills. Madridtas were the fi rst to fi nd the net. Maanda Munyai beat the keeper with a ground cutter, following a neat pass by Lutendo Mulaudzi. Fhatuwani Muthathedzwa of Artists was the fi rst player to go into the referee’s book. He tackled Humbulani Simba from behind in the 27th

minute. Artists introduced Akani Maluleke and Vutomi Ngomana for Samuel Mathebula and Si-lence Tshikombeni respectively in the 34th minute. The score was 1-1 when the referee blew the half-time whistle.

Artists’ equalizer came via Akani Maluleke in the 39th minute. He beat the keeper with a ground cutter from a free kick.

The winner was determined through a penalty shootout as the score was still 1-1 at the end of the regulation time.

Madridtas converted six through Phindulo Motsoare, Eethe Khaukanani, Ernot Dzaga, Maanda Munyai, Rinae Malin-da and Solomon Noko, while United Artists scored fi ve and missed two.
