In the court docu- ments, a lot is being said about the customs of the Vhavenda and how a new successor is appointed by the royal family. Khosi Fhumu- lani Peter Kutama ruled as chief from 1989 until his death in August 2011. He was the grandson of the famous Venda king, Makhado Tshilwavhusiku Ramabulana. Unlike his predecessors, Chief Kutama did not marry a “Dzekiso” wife. As judge Kgomo explained in his ruling: “A Dzekiso wife is always procured from a pre-set family, i.e. the Royal Council or Family, in consultation with the Khadzi or Makhadzi in charge during the tenancy of the ruler in question, know before a ruler ascends the throne where such a ruler’s Dzekiso wife must be sourced from.” Khosi Fhumulani Peter Kutama refused to mar- ry a Dzekiso wife and instead married someone from a different lineage, namely Martha Kutama. They had two sons, Tshiungulela Ustinov Kutama, who died in March 2010, and Mpho Andropov Kutama. Following the death of Chief Kutama, a panel of five Makhadzi (elders of the family) met to decide who the next Senior Khosi of the Kutama people would be. The name of Prince Vele Kutama as new successor was announced during a meeting of the Kutama Royal Family on 26 December 2011. The incumbent is the younger brother of the late chief and, according to the court papers, born from one of the Dzekiso wives. Mpho Kutama and his uncle, Aifheli Kutama, argued in court that they were only later informed of the decision of the royal family, but judge Kgomo did not accept this version. He criticised them for not speaking up at the meeting and voicing their objections and he was convinced that they were present when such a decision was taken. If you are of royal blood, then don’t marry for love. If you do, that’s fairly much the end of the line for your royal lineage and your children will be citizens like everyone else.

This belief was strengthened by a recent ruling in the Thohoyandou High Court. Judge NF Kgomo ruled two weeks ago that children born from a wife other than the Dzekiso wife are not in line for succession.

This very interesting and somewhat contro-versial case started in May 2013 when papers

were fi led to oppose the inauguration of Prince Vele Kutama as the new chief of the Kutama

area. The decision of the Kutama royal council to appoint Vele Kutama as

chief was challenged by the son of the late Chief Peter Ku-

tama, Mpho Andropov Kutama, and his uncle, Aifheli Andries Kuta-ma. They argued that Mpho Kutama, as the only surviving son of the late chief, should have been next in line for the kingship.

In the court docu-ments, a lot is being said about the customs of the Vhavenda and how a new successor is appointed by the royal family. Khosi Fhumu-lani Peter Kutama ruled

Career centre addresses pupils’ challenges

Lack of water “the miserable failure of the VDM”

International poetry festival in Vhembe

Notice

Maritime career and awareness expoThe Youth Chamber of Ship-ping in Africa (YCSA) and the Transport Education Training Authority (TETA) are inviting rural schools to attend a mar-itime careers and awareness expo.

The event will take place to-

morrow (Saturday) at the Makha-do EMPC Hall in Dzanani (Bi-aba) township in Nzhelele. It will start at 08:30 and end at 14:30. According to the organisers, the main aim of the event is to eradicate the lack of knowledge around the maritime industry

by promoting it among young people. Exhibitors at the event will interact with the pupils and share information about the op-portunities available across the different maritime fields and the numerous job selections at their organisations.

“Vele Kutama is the correct choice” - judge(From page 1)

The judge ruled that the first respondent in the case, Vele Kutama, was the correct choice, because “He is the most senior of the living Dzekiso sons of a recognised Chief.”

The two applicants’ plea that the late Chief Kutama’s wife, Martha, was accepted as the Dz-ekiso wife by the family during his 20-year reign, was also not accepted.

“Should there have been a need (for a Dzekiso wife), the Royal Family should have proceed-ed to look for a Dzekiso wife, even without the co-operation or consent of the ruling traditional leader,” Andries Kutama argues

in the court papers.“A Dzekiso wife does not

come from (just) any family,” stated judge Kgomo. “A specific new incumbent knows or ought to know or would be told where his Dzekiso wife would come from, i.e. from which specified family or homestead. He has no discretion over such a matter. He need not even love that Dzekiso wife. His (duty) is to do the nec-essary to ensure that the line of succession is assured within that lineage of chiefs.”

The two applicants’ request that the decision to appoint Vele Kutama as new chief be reviewed and set aside, was dismissed with costs.

The spokesperson for the Ku-

tama Royal Family, Vhamusanda Vho-Ntanganedzeni Progress Kutama, welcomed the decision of the court and said it favours both parties because the court cannot appoint a chief. “The appointment of the chief is the responsibility of the royal fam-ily,” he said. According to him the chieftaincy (Vhuhosi) is the property of the family and the chief is the “manager” of that property. He appelaed to all par-ties to work together so that the family can rule as a unity.

Andries Kutama said that they need to decide within the next few days on whether they will take the case on review. He be-lieved that they may have enough grounds to file for an appeal.

The Vhembe international po-etry festival seemingly yielded positive results as most poets dealt with obstacles that hinder their work as well as the man-ner of preserving the beauty of art.

Most local and international poets flocked to the Timbila writers’ village at Shirley outside Elim a fortnight ago for a three-day poetry festival. During the festival, poets planted trees at the village, read and recited poems and presented seminar papers.

On Friday, they also visited the local pre-school, Jungle Club, and read to the young ones to encourage reading from a tender age.

The festival ended on Saturday night after poets had visited the Mapungubwe world heritage site.

Speaking during the festival opening, Timbila’s director and celebrated poet Vonani Bila stated that the panel discussions wouldgive them direction to preserve their poetry. “We smust also thank the support of the

Department of Arts and Culture through the Mzansi Golden Economy, for sponsoring this festival,” said Bila.

The main discussion of the first day was the preserving of vernac-ular languages and encouraging poets to not only write in English.

“We need to understand the role of poetry in society and also celebrate our own poetry, our languages and the rich things that we regard as our own world,” added Bila.

Some of the renowned poets who attended the festival, photographed with the young ones at the Jungle Club Crèche during the visit.

This man fell victim to mob justice on Sunday morning. He was allegedly found in possession of a bag full of highly valued cell phones at a bus stop next to Absa Bank in Thohoyandou. When he was asked about the phones, he allegedly ran away. That prompted members of the community to believe that he was one of the robbers who are terrorising the area. The man was then assaulted with various objects by the angry mob but was later rescued by the police, who appeared at the scene. The spokesperson for the SAPS in Thohoyandou, Maj Mashudu Malelo, said that no case was opened relating to the incident. He said that the victim was still welcome to open a case. A new career centre was re-cently launched in Dzanani Township (Biaba) at the Makhado CPD satellite centre, formerly known as the Venda College of Education. This centre aims to provide career guidance, arrange exhibitions and disseminate career-relat-ed information to all Grade 8 to Grade 12 pupils as well as young people already out of school.

The project manager of Mut-shedzi Foundation Career Centre,

Mr Masala Mudzusi, said their main objective was to assist all pupils with quality career guid-ance. “This will help increase the level of enrolment at various tertiary institutions and other training colleges,” he said. Ac-cording to Mudzusi, the centre will help expose young people to opportunities available to them and assist them when they apply for admission to different tertiary institutions. Mudzusi also believes the centre will help connect many jobless people with

employers as part of a work-read-iness programme that is offered by the centre. “To get in touch with our centre, one can simply send a ‘please call me’ message to 076 251 3894 any time,” said Mr Mudzusi.

Initially, the centre will assist 20 schools in the Nzhelele area and then expand its services to additional schools. “Some of the schools are in deep rural areas where there is a lack of infor-mation and proper assistance,” he added.

For many residents of Louis Trichardt, Tshikota and even as far as Elim, the last three weeks brought a feeling of déjà vu as taps ran dry yet again.

This time around, no notice of water interruptions was given and many were caught with their back-up containers stored away. The reason for this, according to local AfriForum chairperson Mr Wally Schultz, is the miserable failure of the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) to fulfil their duties.

For the past three weeks, said Schul-tz, the Mowkop Reservoir could not be filled to 100% capacity, as a result of broken-down water pumps.

“If one pump goes and is not fixed in time, the reservoir will run dry, and when the pump is fixed again, the reservoir can take up to three days to get full again,” said Schultz.

The exact reason as to why the pumps have stopped working this time around is, however, not clear. Schultz himself prom-ised to investigate the matter as soon as he was back in town. He was approached as little to no communication was coming from the VDM.

Schultz blamed a lack of leadership for the VDM’s failure to supply one of residents’ most basic needs. The positions of both the municipal manager and the director of technical services are vacant at present. These positions are crucial when it comes to water service delivery and are both currently being filled by interim appointments. “There is nobody to hold ac-countable at VDM or who knows what they

are expected to do,” said Schultz. As AfriForum chairperson, Schultz has

been trying to hold the VDM, which is the institution responsible for maintaining wa-ter infrastructure, accountable for the past three years. AfriForum obtained a High Court order during August 2012, forcing the VDM to adhere to an action plan that would have ensured an uninterrupted water supply to Louis Trichardt. Alas, AfriForum has found that one can bring a municipality to the water but cannot force them to give water to the people.

After VDM was threatened with a second court application for contempt of court, they asked AfriForum for an allowance on the first order to afford them time to implement the prescribed action plan. During August 2014, the Bergh Street and Mowkop reservoirs (the key storage-and-supply reservoirs to town) were reported to be 100% full. Sadly, only two and a half months later, the situation took a turn for the worse when, during an inspection tour of the supplying boreholes, these were found to be in a severe state of careless collapse.

The new year also brought new troubles, adding to the current water woes, when it soon became clear that VDM was coming apart at the seams.

Two weeks ago, the Limpopo Mirror reported about fears that the VDM might be border-line bankrupt.

These rumours were further fuelled by

reports that the Makhado Municipality had cut off the VDM’s electricity supply to the water pumps because VDM’s accounts had fallen in arrears. Both municipalities were approached for comment in this regard.

Despite numerous promises by VDM spokesperson Mr Matodzi Ralushai to respond, he had yet to do so by the time of our going to press. Makhado munic-ipal spokesperson Mr Louis Bobodi did respond, indicating that cutting the power was a mistake that was rectified.

It is clear from readers’ complaints that no relief has been experienced. More and more residents have been calling on Schultz to assist with arrangements to ensure that an emergency water tanker visit their homes.

In the meantime, it would seem that AfriForum might be preparing for anoth-er round in court regarding the current water crisis. “More details will follow shortly, but for now I’m not at liberty to say anything because of impending legal action,” said Schultz. “We don’t want people to relocate elsewhere. This is a problem that can be solved with the right action,” he added.

Residents can log on to Schultz’s dedi-cated complaint line on Facebook to either report water shortages or to request the emergency water tanker. The page can be found under the name I.A.M (Independent Action Forum).

“Humble and diligent servant” laid to restPres Jacob Zuma has called on motorists to observe and obey the rules of the road. He delivered the eulogy at the Salema Sports ground near Xikundu outside Malamulele during the burial of the Minister of Public Service and Administration, Mr Collins Chabane.

“Drivers should observe and obey the rules of the road, regardless of whether there are road traffi c offi cials or not. Careless driving on our roads will not be tolerated and those found driving recklessly will face harsh fi nes,” Zuma said.

Zuma was joined by Limpopo Premier Stan Mathabatha, Vhav-enda King Toni Mphephu Ram-abulana, various cabinet ministers, businessman Patrice

Motsepe, various cabinet ministers and numerous traditional leaders. Zuma described Chabane as a brilliant son from Xikundu village who dedicated his life as a freedom fi ghter and served the country hum-bly and diligently.

He said he was among the people who recruited the late Chabane to join Umkhotho we Sizwe at the age of 17. Speakers after speaker described Chabane as a hero of heroes, a combatant for life and a patriot to the end. A brother of Chabane, Ronald, said his brother’s death had left the family devastated as they had lost someone who was close to the family. “Collins was a simple man, despite his status in the government and in the African National Congress. We have lost a giant. God knows why He has taken him so early,” said Ronald

Chabane. Min Chabane (55) passed away on Sunday, 15 March, in a car crash on the N1 near Polokwane. Two of his guards, sergeants Lesiba Sekele and Lawrence

Lentsoane, also died in the collision. Cha-bane is survived by his wife, Mavis, and two children, his son Matimba and daughter Tsakani.

Tshiluvhi family claims former “palace”

First computers for Vhutuwangadzebu

Venda teacher allegedly chased away from school

The royal family of Tshiluvhi is going to lodge a land claim for the area that also includes the house that was once occupied by the then Venda President, Khosikhulu Vho-PR Mphep-hu-Ramabulana.

The house, now known as the Palace Lodge, is standing on the left side of the main road from Sibasa to Thohoyandou. Previ-ously, the place was known as Minister’s houses, but the current spokesperson of the Netshilung-wi family, Shandukani Khorom-mbi-Netshilungwi, said the place used to be known as Tshilungwi village before they were forcibly removed from there in 1965.

“The place where the royal palace is standing used to be called Tshilivhi. It was our resi-dential area, which also covered the whole of Thohoyandou and some of its surrounding areas. It was Tshiluvhi’s royal family’s residential site. It became Tho-hoyandou in 1977 when it was urbanized.”

He added that after they “were forcibly removed by the apart-heid government in 1965, we spread to other areas like Lufule, Sokotenda, Ha-Magidi as well as some other areas.”

This coming Saturday, 28 March, the family will be cel-ebrating Tshiluvhi Day at the

royal palace.A book entitled Ngwaniwapo,

La Mulovha la Tshiluvhi Ha-Net-shiulwi will be launched on the same day.

The book, written by Khoro-mmbi-Netshiulwi, describes the history of the Tshiluvhi family.

He added that the family had initially failed to lodge a claim with the Department of Land Af-fairs because they had submitted their application late. However, the family is busy negotiating with their legal representative to find way to lodge a land claim in this open period.

Pupils, school management and parents at Vhutuwangadzebu Primary School were in a joyful mood when their school recent-ly received computers.

Vhutuwangadzebu is a far-flung rural village in the Nzhelele area. The area is so disadvan-taged that technology is some-thing unheard of. A group of young professionals who were born in the area have taken it upon themselves to change the situation at their village for the better.

The 36 young people who went to school at the same school but are now working in different fields, created a foundation that would into look the educational needs of pupils in the community

and schools in the area. They started the De Gem Foundation with the aim of empowering their community through illiteracy eradication.

The foundation recently pre-sented 20 computers to their former school and, according to a spokesperson for the founda-tion, the donation marks a new era at the school, where pupils and members of the community will be introduced to modern technology.

The foundation’s chairperson, Tshifhiwa Ramaphuma, said the foundation was started in 2014 as a response to the educational needs of the village. “We grew up here and we know of the chal-lenges the young ones face if they

are not introduced to technology at an early age. Technology is the in thing and we felt this humble donation would go a long way to-wards changing our community. Besides the computers, we are going to look at areas of needs such as uniforms and other learn-ing-support materials,” he said.

School principal Mr Itani Ma-gonono said the donation could not have come at a better time. “We have computer classes here that cater for the community and our pupils, but we do not have enough computers. We have 624 pupils and face challenges such as a shortage of classrooms and toilets, but the donation will make a big difference,” he said .

A mathematics teacher at Madobi Pri-mary School, Mr Edzisani Muthathe, was allegedly chased away from the school by the school governing body (SGB) and the traditional authority “for being a Venda working in a Tsonga school”.

Muthathe (49) of Mashau has been re-porting to the circuit office since February this year. He said he had already taken the matter to the manager of the Hlanganani Central Circuit for a solution.

“I’m head of department and execute my duties perfectly. I started working with them in 2007, without any problems. The problem started in February when the principal, Mr Mack Johnson Makhubele, announced that he was going to retire in April.

authority thought I might continue as acting head of the school and they started a fight against me. They don’t like Ven-da-speaking people in that area, and that is the reason why they chased me away, in front of the principal. He didn’t say anything to protect me. Pupils and some parents were crying as I was marched out,” Muthathe said.

According to Muthathe, the primary school, with approximately 450 pupils, is situated between Makhasa and Vyeboom “where 90% of people are Tsongas.”

Principal Mack Johnson Makhubele said that he could not comment on the mat-ter and referred all queries to the Limpopo Department of Education. He refused to divulge if the school has another English or mathematics teacher. The chairperson of the SGB, known as Mr Edward Ngo-

beni, refused to talk to the media. He said he did not talk to ghosts and warned the paper not to phone again.

Mr Paena Galane, spokesperson of the Limpopo Department of Education, expressed his shock with the matter and stated that the Hlanganani Central Circuit was handling it. He emphasised, however, that South Africa is a united country with many languages, cultural diversity and religions and that the country could not allow any person or cultural group to insult others.

“What we have discovered is that the traditional authority influenced commu-nity members to revolt against Muthathe, fearing that he may be appointed as prin-cipal when the current one retires. We don’t want traditional leaders to create unbearable situation at our schools.”

Former pupils assist in developing Phaswana School

Grade 12 pupils show copies of the study material brought by the two academics.

Dr Fhatuwani Mutuvhi addresses pupils and members of the school’s management during their visit to the school.

Two former pupils of Phaswana Sec-ondary School, Fhatuwani Mutuvhi (39) and Sylvester Mpandeli (41), who passed with matric exemption when they were in Grade 12, are now aca-demics of note.

They v is i ted the school about three weeks ago, with the aim of assisting in its development. During a meeting, the two de-cided to donate a R10 000 cash reward for the best Grade 12 pupil every year. They also gave books to Grade 12 pupils.

Dr Fhatuwani Mutu-vhi, who works in the office of the Minister of Communications, said the bond they had with the school could not be broken. “We studied here and I still remem-ber the class where I did my Grade 12. We are here as examples that big things can come from anywhere. One’s background is not a measuring rod to deter-mine one’s destiny,” he added.

Prof Sylvester Mpan-deli, who works for the Water Research Com-mission in Pretoria, said they were also going to mobilize resources and other needs for the school. “We know of the challenges here and we have heard what the school requires. We are going all out, and we will do what we can and even knock on different doors. We will assist the school in facilitating and drawing up business plans and funding pro-posals for infrastructure

development,” he said. The principal, Ms Gladys Ravele, was

over the moon. “The initiative comes at a time when we are celebrating being the best school in the Thohoyandou cluster in the 2014 Grade 12 examinations. This

will be quite a good year for us. We are very motivated and we will work harder to achieve a 100% pass. We are appealing to other pupils who studied here to follow in the footsteps of the two and come back to assist their brothers and sisters,” she said.

Makhado Municipallibrary reopens

Royal recognition for best school in the Luvhuvhu circuit

The municipal library in Louis Trichardt re-opened on Monday (23 March).

The library was closed after the heavy rains in December last year which left the roof leaking, causing severe damage to the books. According to the manager of communications and events of the Makhado Municipality, Mr Louis Bobodi, the roof has since been fixed at a cost of more than R200 000. “The municipality would like to thank members of the public for their patience and co-operation,” he added.

The top-performing rural school in Limpo-po’s Luvuvhu Circuit and its 2014 Grade 12 pupils received praise from a former pupil, who is now one of the senior traditional lead-ers in the Vhembe region.

Thase Secondary School, based in Ha-Muraga village, who became the top school in Luvuvhu Circuit during the 2014 matric results, received a surprise visit from Thovhele Gole Mphaphu-li, one of the senior traditional leaders in the Vhembe region.

Mphaphuli passed his matric at the school during the 90s and was happy to find out that the school is excelling at producing good matric results.

“We are excited to hear that my former school was the best in the circuit and produced a 95.6% matric pass rate in 2014; we want to motivate this year’s learners to get a 100% pass rate. I do hope my visit to the school will bring changes and that the school will always make us proud,” he added.

Thovhele Mphaphuli handed over a framed message of hope and support to the school and said nothing would stop someone who worked hard from achieving his/her goal.

“We also gave cash prizes, certificates and trophies to the top learners as a way of motivat-ing the others. Good work is always recognized. Never mind if you were born in a poor family. Take education seriously and you will change yourself and the family for better,” added Mp-haphuli.

The principal of the school, Mr Ntakadzeni Mandiwana, was very happy that one of the senior traditional leaders was recognising his school. “From 62.12% in 2012 to 95.6% in 2014 means that our school is going from strength to strength, and we hope to achieve 100% this year.

Despite the old and dilapidated buildings of our school, we are performing the best,” said Mandiwana.

Mandiwana urged the education department, however, to build a science and computer centre at the school.

Murendeni Madzhuta (27) of Maungani released her debut album, Murahu Athit-shaya, at the end of last month.

She started singing in church in 2000 as a member of the community choir Pionious. According to her, she grew up listening to well-known singers such as Derick Nzimande and Rapson Rambuwani, and she drew inspiration from them.

Her debut album has seven tracks and she said that she sang about personal experiences “and what I see happening in my vicinity. I also give advice here and there through my music, and by the look of things, I will continue singing this type of music as it is proving very popular,” she added.

The tracks Khotsi anga, Nwananga and Riam-ulivhuwa are already very popular.

She sings the kind of songs that encourages understanding and respect within the family and in relationships. She also mentioned that, without God, people will not be able to enjoy life to the fullest. “We are all created in the image of God and we should pay back by praising Him. In my case, it is through music.”

She mentioned that she was concerned to see that some young people are consuming liquor and

some are using drugs. “I can see that you are all happy and you love

my music. I am still going to give you more good music, but I have a concern as I have noticed that some of you are holding beer bottles. If you are consuming alcohol, please do it where there are no children, because it will create the wrong impression,” she said.

She said the music industry was heading for a dead end because of piracy.

“There are no more music shops in town, be-cause they can not compete with these ruthless thieves who sell our music at next to nothing. Many in this industry have lost their jobs, and art-ists are now at the receiving end as their music is found on pavements and sold for as little as R10, with the money going to the pirates,” she said.

peers started tolerating him and respecting his cultural background.

Since then, his poetry has been inspired by nepotism and hate. “These are the factors that infl uenced me to establish thoughts of unity and peace among different cultures,” he said.

This 25-year-old poet has been focusing seri-ously on his poetry since he passed Grade 12 in 2008 and it has earned him various accolades. He scooped his fi rst ever best poet award at the Mapungubwe Festival in 2008 and was also named the best community poet in Molemole. The following year, he was recognised as the best poet by the group Limpopo the musical.

His family didn’t like it when he opted to pursue poetry instead of furthering his studies. They initially criticised him, hoping he would go to university, but the young man persisted on his journey. “They never thought or understood what I was doing, but today they are very sup-portive and they know that poetry is within me,” he added. His talent grew bigger and he started performing at various events. He has often per-formed at the Polokwane theatre and appeared in various television programmes. In 2012, he was named the best Tshivenda praise singer during the Tshivenda Music Awards (Tshima).

In 2013, he was nominated in the same cate-gory and last year he was nominated in three cat-egories, namely best poet, best praise singer and

most downloaded song at the South African Tradition-al Music Awards (Satma).

He uses poetry to narrate the diverse culture of the South African society. “I write my poems in Tshivenda, Eng-lish, Sepedi, Isizulu as well as Xhosa. This also helps me as a poet to explore the diversity of this country,” remarks Vendaboy Poet.

“He discovered his talent for poetry at a time he was striving to fi nd his true identity in a dif-ferent tribe,” said Lutendo Evans Mugagadeli.

Popularly known as VendaBoy Poet, he used poetry to describe his disgust at discrimination and nepotism when he was a young boy who had just moved to another school. That was when his family moved from Manyima village in the Nthabalala area to Soekmekaar.

He had to further his primary education in a hos-tile environment, since his peers often bullied him because of his language and culture. “I couldn’t speak Sepedi clearly and those people thought they were superior to me and they undermined my culture,” he said. He sought attention through his poetry. In most of his initial poems, he praised the Tshivenda cul-ture, language and tradition. Ultimately, he triumphed against the chal-lenge and his

A night out for two elderly friends ended in sadness when one of them died, apparently after being hit on the head with an axe.

From what could be estab-lished, the two men, one aged 65 and the other 55, were drinking sorghum beer together at Tsianda village about three weeks ago. The two were apparently social-

ising in a very peaceful manner. An argument allegedly broke out when the two friends returned home later that night.

According to initial police reports, the argument intensified and the two men allegedly started fighting. The 65-year-old man allegedly took a pickaxe and hit the 55-year-old man over the head. The 55-year-old man died

upon his arrival at the hospital. The 65-year-old was later

arrested and he was remanded in custody while the police investi-gations are continuing. The sus-pect is expected to appear in court soon. “We are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the murder case,” said Levubu police spokesperson W/O Solly Mukhola.

It is not every day that a birth-day can be celebrated for the whole year, but this is a dif-ferent case with the SABC’s Tshivenda-speaking radio sta-tion Phalaphala FM.

The station, which was born on 2 February 1965 as Radio Venda, has now been in existence for 50 years and was renamed to Phalaphala FM in 1997. A year later, the station merged with Radio Thohoyandou.

In celebration of 50 years of existence, the station has prom-ised mouthwatering changes in their lineup which promise to give the listeners more of what they want and less of what they don’t. The station boasts legendary presenters like Jim-my ‘the scratcher’ Nethilulu, Mpho ‘Jantibay’ Nefale and Pat Nephawe, to name but a few. The station continues with its winning formula of presenters,

Listeners should expect exciting and vibrant changes in the station’s the lineup from 1 April 2015. Programme manag-er Sharon Ravele says that the changes in the lineup “is a game changer for the station.” Hu Bvu-ma Yone Fhedzi, as the station is commonly known, will also give away a total of R100 000 in cash prizes to their listeners as a way o f t hank ing them for their l o y a l t y a n d contribution to the growth of the station. The acting market-ing manager of the station, Lu-funo Munon-de, says that

the listeners are most important assets “and we always strive to make them happy as we cannot exist without them.”

The station promises to make this one a year of the listeners because they will also donate 20 computers to four different school and pairs of school shoes collected through their ‘Donate shoes campaign’. The station will also go “retro” by hosting previ-ous presenters on the programme hosted by Rofhiwa Nethengwe every Sunday at 21:00.

Oupa Mashaba (46), who passed away on Saturday, 21 March, after falling ill.

Mashaba, who hailed from Musina Nance-field, was one of the re-spected freedom fighters in the area.

Ramoyada visited the grieving family on Tuesday to convey her condolences personally. “It is important to visit you as a family during this time of need. The pain that you are feel-ing needs to be soothed by prayers and words of courage. On behalf of the council and all the people of Musina, I send my heartfelt con-dolences to you, the family, friends and all the people who had the pleasure of knowing Comrade Mashaba. He was a distinguished son of the soil whose con-tribution to the attain-ment of freedom and democracy will always

be remembered,” said Ramoyada. She added that Mashaba’s

legacy wouldcontinue to guide the young generation “to defend our democracy.

He will always be remembered

for his fearless revolutionary spirit.”

“Everyone has the right to life, freedom and human dignity”

Some of the stakeholder representatives who formed part of the Human Rights Day celebration at Nancefield Community Hall.

Musina municipality

“As we celebrate our human rights today, we should also take into account that we are commemorating a sad day in the history of our country. The good memories are that we are enjoying human rights because we have a democratic government. The sad part of it is that there are people who lost their lives, so that we

could attain this freedom.”Those were the words of Cllr Nkele

Milanzi, the acting mayor, during the Musina Municipality’s Human Rights Day celebration in the Nancefield Community Hall.

She added that everyone had the right to life, equality, freedom and human dignity.

“Let’s all enjoy these rights instead of violating them.” She referred to the protests in Langa and Sharpeville in the 1960s “that gave birth to these rights. Scores of people died for these rights. We should always avoid vio-lating these human rights in honour of those who paved the way for our freedom.”

Various organisations and gov-ernment departments who partnered Musina Municipality during the event include the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the South African Police Service, the Department of Health and the Independent Electoral Commis-sion of South Africa (IEC). Represen-tatives from the partnering institutions also enlightened scores of people who filled the Nancefield community hall to capacity during the event.

Ms Liesel Roos, an executive

administrator of the IOM, said the lives of those who came to South Africa for whatever reason must be respected and protected. “Most of them come here to seek solace as they are facing difficult situations in their own countries. We need to understand that these people have rights which need to be protected.”

Mr Carles Gatoto of the UNHCR said it is encouraging to see the res-idents of Musina living together in harmony. “For everyone to enjoy their human rights, they have to respect the simple principle of Ubuntu.”

The chief executive officer of the Musina Hospital, Mr George Makuya, said people shouldn’t hesitate to visit the hospital whenever they were not feeling well. “Access to health care is everyone’s right. You should visit the hospital for treatment.”

It was clear that people were to-tally enlightened about their rights. Rosina Mamafha from Matswale said: “Human Rights Day reminds me of the contributions that our fallen heroes and heroines made, so that our country can be a good place to live in. Today’s presentations laid a foundation for most of us to respect human rights, freedom and justice.”

The friendly Const Cynthia Ndou was recently appointed as the new spokesperson of the Waterval SAPS. She invites the public and the media to liaise with her regarding any communication issues at the Waterval SAPS.

Lwamondo education empowerment programme ends after six yearsWhen he started a programme of empowering pupils at Lwamondo’s schools about six years ago, businessman Steven Maluleke of Kgomaga-nang Business Enterprise gave himself a target

of five years, but as a result of the popularity of the project, he added another.

Over the years, the project gave more than half-a-million rand as motivation to pupils in Grade 12

Sponsor Steven Maluleke (standing left), principals from Lwamondo schools and the local traditional leader are photographed with the happy pupils who received uniforms.

and numerous learning and teaching aids.A fortnight ago, the project closed shop in style

when the top pupils from all Lwamondo schools received cash incentives ranging from R5 000 to R11 000 as reward for their hard work. The project was hailed a success as it also produced Avheani Maitakhole, who was among the top national achievers.

During the event, pupils from three primary schools, Tshiwedza, Tshivhale and Belemu, feeder schools for Makakavhale Secondary, the school which produced Maitakhole, received school uniforms.

Speaking during the handover, Maluleke said he was excited that they had ended on a higher note after producing the best learner in the district, but he was also sad and touched as there were still kids going to school barefoot and with torn uniforms. “We are also very excited that results at all the local schools have improved tremendously, and we cannot forget that Lwamondo Secondary School attained a 100% pass rate in 2013. That is no mean feat and we are very proud of our involvement and contribution, “ he said.

Local traditional leader Chief Mulindathavha Netshivhale commended the good work done by Maluleke.

“We know that Maluleke is from here and is ploughing back, but there are many businesses that have done nothing for the community. We are hap-py that he will still be involved in the development of this village,” he said.

After he had established the progress and excellence at the Ganyane Primary School in Tshakhuma area, Pastor Dickson Mulaudzi from AFM Arise and Shine Assembly Church recently adopted the school. The principal, Mr Tshifhiwa Siaga, said the pastor would regularly motivate teachers and pupils to boost their spiritual beliefs. He will also seek sponsorships and support destitute pupils. Photographed during the ceremony are, in the middle, Mr Tshifhiwa Siaga and Pastor Dickson Mulaudzi, and with them are the school teachers dressed in school uniform.

The long-awaited Magau Road Construction Project is now underway. The project was officially launched by Mayor David Mutavhatsindi a fortnight ago. In our photo, he is standing with members of the executive committee and the community during the sod-turning ceremony. The Makhado municipality has injected R25 million into the project. Mutavhatsindi also officially launched the Tshivhazwaulu to Rasivhetshela Road Construction Project at Ha-Mangilasi in the Vuwani area last Wednesday. The cost for the 4km road-construction project is R27.6 million, and it is expected that members of the community will also benefit from temporary employment during the project. Photo supplied.

While several rural women collected marula fruits to make mukumbi and sell it to the public, the rural women from Muswodi-Tshisimani are making mukumbi free of charge for the drinking pleasure of the tradtional leaders of the villages around the area. The marula/mukumbi season ended on Saturday and the communities of Muswodi-Tshisimani held U hwedza mukumbi, which means a day of drinking marula beer free of charge at the chief’s kraal. In our photo, one of the traditional leaders in the Ha-Rambuda Traditional Council, Chief Mmbengeni Rambuda of Musunda village, receives a calabash full of mukumbi. Photo by Silas Nduvheni

Financial Management

Special award forimproved auditMusina Municipality was presented with a special award for improved Audit Outcomes for the 2013/2014 financial year. This was during the occasion of the 2015 South African Local Government Association (SALGA) Limpopo Fi-nance Week which was recently held at Tzaneen.

The award has been hailed as a positive move since there has been some improvement in the run-ning of the municipality for the past year. During the 2012/2013 financial year, the municipality received a qualified audit opinion from the Auditor General. A qualified audit opinion suggests that the information provided was limited in scope or the institution being audited has not maintained the generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).

An improvement was recorded during the 2013/2014 financial year when the municipality received an unqualified audit opinion. An unqual-ified audit opinion is when the Auditor General concludes that financial records and statements are fairly and appropriately presented, and in ac-cordance with the GAAP.

A jubilant mayor of the Musina Municipality, Cllr Mihloti Ramoyada, said that the award would go a long way in motivating councilors, adminis-trators and all stakeholders to work towards the common goal of attaining a clean audit report. “Our next step is to make sure that all our reports, including finances, are free of any misrepresenta-tions. The first basic area of improvement will be the ability to produce reliable monthly financial and management information, which is essential for the monitoring of service delivery activities.”

She added that they would continue to make sure that their financial records were maintained in accordance with the GAAP.

“These processes will be achievable because we have adequate leadership and human resource capacity to perform these basic financial and man-agement functions.”

Musina mayor Mihloti Ramoyada proudly holds the SALGA trophy which was presented to Musina Municipality for improved audit outcomes.

Tshilidzini Special School in Shayandima emerged as the top performer in South Africa, raising more than any other organisation in the country during last year’s Casual Day campaign.

Of the R17 million that was raised nationally by schools and NGOs last year, Limpopo Province raised R6.4 million rand and Tshilidzini raised R1.8 million, almost doubling what they raised the year before.

According to Celeste Vinassa, the project leader, the teachers, volun-teers and pupils of Tshilidzini “are

the shining stars of Casual Day. They have raised hundreds of thousands for their own school, but they have also raised nearly a million that will go to the other beneficiaries. This kind of generosity of spirit is astounding and it moves me every time I think about them.”

She added that they had been work-ing with the teachers and fundraisers of Tshilidzini for almost 20 years and she had immense respect “for their dedication to the pupils that they take under their wing. They have a huge and beautiful campus in Shayandima,

Pupils of Tshilidzini Special School.

which they keep spotless. Many of the children come from impover-ished communities, but they receive a quality education at Tshilidzini. They are the epitome of dignity and human rights.”

Several other Limpopo institutions also raised huge amounts. Vinassa mentioned Fulufhelo Special School (R1.542 million), Helene Franz School (R481 577), Grace and Love Special School (R333 450), Tshil-wavhusiku Razwimisani (R283 725), Polokwane Nasorgsentrum (R270 076), Bosele School for the Blind

and Deaf (R186 382), Association for Persons with Disabilities (R177 476), Letaba Special School (R158 572) and Ratanang Special School (R145 520).

She added, however, that the big-gest winners were the persons with disabilities all over South Africa, “as the money raised goes to sustaining the many organisations that render services to persons with disabilities”.

The theme for 2015 is Spring into Action. The colour of the year is a refreshing, zingy mint and Casual Day will be on Friday, 4 September.

Magezi and Winners Park lead the ABC

Three vital points for Young Chiefs

Bellevue Winners Park and Magezi FC are in two-horse race, following the results of the past weekend’s ABC Motsepe League matches.

Magezi jumped from the sec-ond place to the top of the log, after beating the other league title chasers, Great North FC, 2-0 at the TT Cholo Stadium in Polokwane last Friday afternoon. Magezi are in a close race with Bellevue Winners Park, with 40 points each.

Winners Park, who have been on top of the log for the past month, dropped two points last weekend when they drew 1-1 with Lephalale Young Killers at

the Nkowankowa Stadium. Great North FC remain in the third spot with 37 points, accumulated from 16 matches.

Dynamos refused to donate points in front of their home crowd. They beat Modimolle Aces 3-0 at the Giyani Stadium. Aces are still to win a league match this season. They have played 16 matches to date and managed to play to a draw on two occasions only. They are lying in the second-last spot on the log.

The Dolphins FC gave Mighty FC a run for their money at the Eldorado Stadium. Although Mighty FC were the first to score, their fighting spirit vanished with

time and, in the end, they lost the match 1-2.

Bilika All Stars have reason to press the panic button. They could not contain Winners Park and were defeated 1-2 at the Giyani Stadium.

The newly promoted A1 Ter-rors were pushed deeper into the relegation quagmire by their neighbours, Mosesetjane All Stars. A1 Terrors did hit the back of the net, while All Stars scored two beautiful goals at the Mah-welereng Stadium in Mokopane.

Polokwane United gave away points to Giyani Hotspurs, to whom they lost 1-2 at the TT Cholo Stadium in Polokwane.

Ngwenani Young Chiefs kept their title hopes alive by crush-ing Marula XI FC 3-0 in their MMK Administrators League match at the Tshivhulani grounds on Saturday.

Realizing that the visitors were all over them, the home side effected an early change to their starting line-up. They replaced Musatondwa Nedzamba with

Hulisani Tshifura in the 14th minute.

The wheel of fortune turned against Marula four minutes later. Their midfielder, Shavhani Netshilaphala, was given his marching orders for using abu-sive language towards a match official. The Chiefs’ dribbling wizard, Tshifhiwa “One-one” Nedzamba, was also booked in

the 25th minute. He obstructed Elekanyani Makhuvha in the 25-meter area.

Young Chiefs opened their account in the 28th minute. Their slender striker, Tshifhiwa Ramatsea, headed home after a free kick taken by Duncan Managa. Marula lost their origi-nal fighting spirit after the goal. Young Chiefs capitalized to score

In memoriam

One of the areas’s oldest residents, Mrs Mmbulaheni Molovhedzi (104), was buried at Ngovhela Backside last Saturday. Gogo Mulovhedzi was born at Tshitotsheni village on 6 August 1911.

She succumbed to a long illness on 14 March. She was blessed with six children, two of whom, including her only son, passed away some years ago. One of her four surviving daughters is a well-known local traditional healer, Vho-Masindi Tshisevhe, who is also a radio presenter.

Her other three surviving daughters are Avhe-ani Mulaudzi, Magret Ramunyisi and Mercy Ra-malivhana. Apart from the four daughters, Gogo Mulovhedzi is survived by 25 grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grand-children. Photo: Frank Mavhungu.

Gogo laid to rest

their second goal five minutes later. Duncan Managa, who scored a brace in the game, was on target after beating the offside trap. Marula started to play defen-sive football thereafter. Young Chiefs, however, managed to unlock their defence in the dying minutes of the last half. Managa received a neat pass from Nndateni Net-shitadi and blasted in a rocket from close range.

Marula effected two more changes to their starting 11 in the open-ing minutes of the last half. Young Chiefs missed a fortune in the 69th minute. They were awarded a penalty after Phumudzo Themeli was brought down within the box. Duncan Mana-ga’s half-volley went straight into the keeper’s hands. The game turned lukewarm in the last 10 minutes.

Tshifhiwa Ramatsea of Young Chiefs (front) and Khumbelo Ratshipondo of Marula chase the ball.

Mayoral Cup victory for Maebane United

KK and Maweja Takers in a thrilling draw

Kabelo Ramashidzha of Aces with the ball, while Isaac Muvhali is on his heels.

Maebane Aces United booked a place in the next stage of the Makhado Municipality Mayoral Cup when they beat Tshikhodobo MML 1-0 at Muduluni on Saturday.

The boys from Tshikhodobo approached the match like a house of fire, with their midfielders excelling at distributing dangerous balls to the strikers. They threatened to score five minutes into the match when Isaac Muvhali forced his way through the defence of Aces before passing the ball to Fhulufhelo Netshinombelwa. His attempt missed the target by inches.

In the 34th minute, Musa Makhubele unleashed a powerful shot from outside the box and the keeper of MML, Mahlatsi Marakalala, watched in disbelief when the ball crossed the goalline.

The second half saw Aces pressing hard in search of more goals. Realizing that their chances were slim, MML abandoned their positions and packed themselves at the far back.

MML came close to scoring in the 77th minute when Kenny Sioga broke loose and shot wide with only the keeper to beat. Kabelo Ramashidzha of Aces should have increased their margin, but his shot was saved by the keeper late in the game.

Another easy victory for Vhembe students

Fhatuwani Thiba of Brazilians (left) and Talifhani Matange of Vhembe are focused on the ball.

Ronetshedzwa Nemavhola of Brazilians leaves the pitch after seeing red.

It was a feast of goals when Vhembe FET College FC walloped Mutuwa Brazilians 6-3 in their MMK Administrators’ League match at the Makwarela Stadium on Saturday.

Brazilians were the first to find the net. Their opening goal came in the ninth minute via Ren-dani Nepfumbada, who scored a hat trick in the game. Nepfumbada was on target after receiving a beautiful pass from Tshimangadzo Makhamu. The Brazilians’ opening goal was an insult to the students. They retaliated nine minutes later. Ipfi “Muzi” Nemalili forced his way through the defence of Brazilians and unleashed from close range.

Nemalili turned the supplier when his side scored the third goal in the 39th minute. Mpheni Razwimisani gave the ball the final touch, follow-ing Nemalili’s square pass, to bring the half-time score to 3-1.

Brazilians approached the second half aggres-sively. They were rewarded in the 54th minute. Rendani Nepfumbada tried his luck from the 25-meter area. The keeper of Vhembe, Dakalo Mukwevho, watched helplessly as the ball hit the back of the net.

Ronetshedzwa Nemavhola of Brazilians was reprimanded with a card for a continued argument with the assistant referee. Takalani Negovha beat the offside trap and scored the students’ third goal in the 64th minute.

Ronetshedzwa Nemavhola of Brazilians was given his marching orders, following a second bookable offence. He obstructed Fhatuwani Mathivha in the 67th minute.

The students scored two more goals via Tal-ifhani Matange in quick succession. Realizing that victory was almost certain, Vhembe started to entertain the fans with their dribbling skills.

They scored the sixth in the 79th minute. Innocent Mapholi beat the keeper with a ground cutter. Brazilians pulled one back through Rendani Nepfumbada two minutes before the final whistle.

Shonisani Rambebu of Maweja Takers controls the ball, while Unarine Mukhavhuli of FC KK is on his heels.

In their MMK Administrators’ League match at the Tshakhuma Tshiemuemu grounds on Sunday, FC KK rose to the occasion and held the log leaders, Maweja Takers, to a 1-1 draw.

The result was not a true reflection of the game as KK were by far the better side when it came to ball possession. KK could have sealed the game in the first 20 minutes, but Lady Luck was not on their side.

Their overlapping midfielder, Unarine Mukhavhuli, caused an upset nine minutes into the game. He received a neat pass from Ndivhuwo Mulovhedzi and shot aimlessly from just outside the box.

Alex Mahlaule, the team’s captain, had a great scoring chance two minutes later. He hesitated for far too long to unleash within the box and ultimately lost possession.

Mahlaule f ina l ly proved beyond doubt in the 24th minute that he was not the team’s captain by default. He capitalized on the keep-er’s clearing error to finish off a rebound. Lu-funo Mudau of KK was booked for a dangerous tackle on Ipfi Muthubi in the 27th minute.

Although Muthu-bi sustained an injury during the incident, he continued with the game as if he knew that he was going to save the team. Muthubi’s time came in the 37th minute. He headed home, following

a brilliant pass by Joseph Ndou.KK were unstoppable for the remaining part of

the first half, but their strikers continued to fumble at the goal finish. Maweja Takers introduced Taka-lani Ramagalela at the expense of Eugene Munyai early in the last half.

KK did not just stand aside and look on when Maweja effected the change to their starting lineup; instead, they responded by replacing Percy Maba-sa with Aluwani Mudzunga in the 64th minute. Although Maweja lost shape in the middle of the park as the game progressed, their captain, Khuliso Netshaulu, remained a live wire.

League points for MuraleniMusina municipality on top in volleyball competition

Deadline looming to apply for fellowship

Stars’ juniors out of Mayoral Cup Tournament

Muraleni United beat Benny’s Care 3-0 in a Safa Vhembe MMK Admimnistrators’ match at Mu-raleni on Sunday.

Benny’s were good at the far back, but their midfielders hesti-tate for too long. It put the defence under tremendous pressure. United initiated several promising moves from the centre of the pitch but were denied a number of scoring opportunities by the solid defence of Benny’s.

The referee, Mr Solly Mavhandu, flashed the first yellow card in the 25th minute. Rendani Mudau of Benny’s tackled Nicky Mulinana from behind and the referee was lenient enough not to give him his marching orders. No goal was scored in the first half.

United scored their first goal in the 65th minute.

Rendani Mathavha tried his luck from outside the box with a left-foot ground cutter. The keeper of Ben-ny’s, Gladwin Nghunyula, misread the line of the ball and watched in disbelief as the ball bounced across the goal line.

The only change which Unit-ed made to their starting line up was when they introduced Cassius Muthambi for Takalani Mawelewele. It was a clever move as United kept on pressurizing the youthful Benny’s and Muthambi scored the second goal for United in the 74th minute. His long-range volley left keeper Nghunyula stranded. The last goal of the match was scored by Fhumulani Mafunisa.

The volleyball team of the Musina Municipality won the recent Sanlam Volleyball Competition at the town’s military base.

Among the strong contenders for the title were the highly-rated SANDF team

and the team of the Vhembe Fire Fighters. In the first game, the municipal team beat the defence force 2-1 and they later beat the Vhembe Fire Fighters 3-0.

Percy Choma, one of the players of the municipal team, was overwhelmed with

joy after the tournament. He said that it was just the beginning. “Our plan is to win as many trophies as possible and to put our municipality on the map.”

Choma’s sentiments were echoed by Teboho Nthala, who was also ex-

The deadline to apply for the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation Fellowship is looming and closes on 30 April for Grade 12 learners.

Applicants who pass the initial screen-ing phase of the selection are required to write the National Benchmark Test. Candidate Allan Gray Fellows are announced after the selection camps.

The fellowship distinguishes itself from other bursary and scholarship programmes with its holistic and individual investment approach. The fellowship also offers the opportunity to engage in a personal and entrepreneurial development programme alongside access to university education. Makhitha Oscar Stars’ junior team were booted out of the Makhado Muncipality Mayoral Cup tournament when they lost 2-0 to Muraleni Lak-uruna FC in their match played at the Maebane grounds on Saturday.

Stars squandered numerous scoring opportuni-ties, making the result a false reflection of the game.

It took the referee, Mr Bethuel Raphebele, 10 minutes to flash the first yellow card. Emmanuel Maedza of Stars received the caution for obstruct-ing William Baloyi just outside the box. Stars missed a fortune in the 17th minute. Their centre forward, Innocent Musehane, could not believe his eyes when his volley hit the woodwork and landed outside the field of play for a goal kick.

As if that was not enough to upset the team’s fans, Vhutshilo Tshishonga caused another upset seven minutes later. His close-range ground cutter missed the goal mouth by inches. Lakuruna gained momentum with time and started to control the match.

Mahlatse Ramoshaba opened the score line in the 38th minute. He blasted in a rocket from the 25-meter area. Stars came close to scoring again three minutes before the break.

Tshifuralo Matambatshika unleashed from the left corner, but the ball crossed to the other end as there was no one inside the box to give it the final touch. Lakuruna were still one goal up when the teams adjourned for half time.

Lugisani Mudau of Stars was booked for an unlawful tackle. He tackled Tshifhiwa Budeli from behind in the 56th minute. Lakuruna replaced Stephens Mathavha and Phumudzo Ramantswana with Humbulani Mufamadi and Mavhungu Mphe-phu respectively. The introduction of the two was a clever move from the Lakuruna technical team.

Lakuruna snatched their second goal in the 85th minute. Mahlatse Ramoshaba connected a chip and beat the opponent’s keeper, Godfrey Manenzhe.

Benny’s striker Mutshidzi Nemaxwi (rifht) tries to pass his opponent, Nicky Mulibana.

Mahlatsi Ramoshaba of Lakuruna jumps into the air and Tshifularo Matambatshika pounces onto the ball.

Mpho Mathivha of Stars beats Mahlatsi Ramoshaba.

tremely happy about the achievement. “We finally have something to brag about as a team. Our hard work and training have indeed paid off.”

The chairperson of the Musina Municipal-ity Sports Committee, Bennie Tlou, congrat-ulated the winning team and encouraged the players to take the legacy of Musina Mu-nicipality forward. “It is not every day that we get to celebrate together as municipal workers. We hope members of other teams within the municipality will draw positive lessons from the winning team.”

Black Leopards’ midfielder-cum-striker, Sphelele Leonard Ntshangase, has received a call-up by the national team coach, Mr Ephraim Mashaba, to prove himself for Bafana Bafana in two friendly matches against Swaziland and Nigeria. The match against Swaziland was played at the Somhlolo Independent Stadium in Lobamba, Swaziland, last Wednesday evening. Their clash against Nigeria will be staged at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit, on Sunday afternoon. Ntshangase is currently Black Leopards’ leading goal scorer, despite the fact that he is a midfielder.

Leopards vs Da Gama in Nedbank quartersThe Nedbank Cup quarterfinal draw created some interesting match-ups when it was held at the Southgate Mall in Johannesburg on Monday afternoon.

After facing the toughest hurdle ever in the form of Kaizer Chiefs last weekend, Black Leopards will face Vasco da Gama in the quarterfinal stage. Un-like in the last-16 stage of the competition, where Lidoda Duvha played away from home, this time around they will play in front of their home crowd.

Vasco da Gama’s way to the quarterfinal went via the Maluti FET College, whom they beat 3-0 at the Parow Park Stadium in Cape Town. Leopards and Vasco da Gama met in their league match at the Thohoyandou Stadium three weeks ago, with Leopards winning 1-0.

When asked about his views about the draw, the chairman of Black Leopards, Mr David Thidiela, said that they couldn’t ask for anything better than Vasco da Gama. He said that the fact that it would be a home fixture was a bonus to them.

Three-time winners Supersport United were drawn against the NFD side, Lamontville Golden Arrows. Supersport United will enjoy home-ground advantage. Golden Arrows beat Natal United 1-0 in their last-16 stage match at the Chatsworth Sta-dium in Durban last Saturday, while Supersport United beat Orlando Pirates to secure a place in the quarterfinal stage. Mamelodi Sundowns will travel to Mpumalanga for their top-16 match against Mpumalanga Black Aces. Mamelodi Sundowns beat Platinum Stars 3-0 in their last-16 fixture last weekend, while Black Aces kicked Jomo Cosmos out 1-0. The toughest match will be between Ajax Cape Town and Bidvest Wits in Cape Town.

The quarterfinal matches will be played over the weekend of 11 and 12 April.

Fixtures

Hotspurs and Dynamos in Mopani derbyThe Giyani Stadium will be a good place for soccer lovers to be tomorrow afternoon. The much-awaited ABC League match between the Mopani sides, Giyani Hotspurs and Dynamos, will be staged.

Both teams are in winning mode of late and per-formed impressively last weekend. Dynamos beat Modimolle Aces 3-0 and Hotspurs overpowered Polokwane United 2-1. Unlike the rest of the league matches that are scheduled to start at 15:00, this one is expected to kick off at 17:00.

Great North will host The Dolphins in their Polokwane derby. Great North must win the match at all cost in order to remain a hot contestant for the league championship. Great North are three points behind the pace setters, Magezi FC. On the other hand, The Dolphins beat Mighty 2-1 last weekend.

Bilika All Stars will travel to Polokwane for their match against Mighty at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium. Bellevue Winners Park are sparing no effort in their preparations for their away fixture against Winners Park at the Mahwelereng Stadium in Mokopane. Anything less than a win will do Bellevue more harm than good. Bellevue’s chances of winning the league title will become slim if they give away league points tomorrow.

Lephalale Young Killers will entertain Moseset-jane All Stars at the Mogol Stadium in Lephalale. A1 Terrors will be the host in their match against Polokwane United at the Ephraim Mohale Stadi-um in Modimolle. Joe Express will pay a visit to Modimolle Aces at the Ephraim Mohale Stadium on Sunday.

Amazing Lidoda Duvha on a roll ... Black Leopards surprise Kaizer ChiefsWhen the coach of Black Leopards, Mr Zeca Marques, said two months ago that winning the league title was something that was within their reach, many football fanatics thought it was a daylight dream. At that stage, Lidoda Duvha were lying in the fourth-last position on the 16-team league log.

Now, only two months down the line, Marques’ words seem to be something to go by.

Black Leopards are still to lose a match under the guidance of Marques. The Thohoyandou out-fit have won seven matches and drawn one. Two of their victories were Nedbank Cup outings. Leopards are now in the sixth position, with 34 points accumulated from 22 matches, 10 behind the pace setters, Lamontville Golden Arrows.

When asked about the secret behind the team’s success, Marques said that it was all about the dedication and hard work on the part of the players, technical team and the management. He stressed the fact that his assistant, Mr Joel Ma-sutha, had laid a good foundation for him, saying it wouldn’t have been easy for him to achieve good results if it were not for Masutha’s efforts.

Marques stated that their aim was to win all

their remaining matches and qualify for promo-tional play-offs if they failed to gain automatic promotion. The champions will be promoted to the elite league automatically, while the second- and third-placed teams will be engaged in the promotional play-offs, together with the Absa Premiership team that will finish their league programme in the second-last position on the log.

Five of Leopards’ eight remaining league matches will be played at home - against Cape Town All Stars, Santos, Milano United, African Warriors and Royal Eagles. Their three remaining away fixtures are: Highlandspark, Thanda Royal Zulu and FC Cape Town.

Leopards’ next fixture will be against Royal Eagles, with whom they will lock horns at the Thohoyandou Stadium next Saturday, 4 April.

Mr Zeca Marques.

Black Leopards surprised the cup specialists, Kaizer Chiefs, and beat them 2-1 in the last 16 of the Nedbank Cup Com-petition at the FNB Stadium on Saturday evening.

Both sides played attacking football in the first half, making the match entertaining to watch. Leopards had their first regret in the seventh minute.

Leonard Ntshangase missed a golden chance when he shot wide.

Realizing that they were heav-ily marked, Leopards decided

to use their flanks to split the opposition defence. In the 20th minute, Lidoda Duvha broke the deadlock.

Their right winger, Morgan Shivambu, blasted in a rocket from inside the box.

After Leopards’ goal, a heat-ed argument ensued between the match officials and Chiefs’ coach, Mr Stuart Baxter. Baxter was given his marching orders for using vulgar words towards the match officials.

Leopard’s keeper, Avhashoni Tshinuna, became the darling of the local supporters when

he saved a shot from Mandla Masango.

The wheel of fortune turned against Leopards in the 78th minute.

Their defenders failed to stop a corner kick by Bafana Bafa-na-star Simphiwe Tshabalala and Willard Katsande equalised with marvellous header.

Chiefs went on the defence and the speedy striker of Leopards, Leonard Ntshangase, beat all the defenders and passed the ball to Roggert Nyundu, who didn’t waste any time to score easily in the dying minutes.
