VDM spokesperson Mr Matodzi Ralushai as- sured the Limpopo Mirror on Wednesday, however, that the municipality is not bankrupt. “You are only bankrupt if you’ve used up your entire budget and grant money,” he said. He admitted, however, that they are facing some challenges. In January this year, strike action was looming at the VDM, with employees downing tools out of protest for not getting paid their salaries on time. At that stage, the provincial leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA), Mr Jacques Smalle, argued that the municipality was already bankrupt as their salary bill was in the region of R20 million a month while they only had R7 million in their bank account. In response, Ralushai admitted that salary pay- ments for January were delayed but that payments were eventually made. He attributed the late payment to a cash-flow problem the VDM had experienced at the time but added that the VDM was financially stable. The question at that stage was where the VDM got the money from to pay the salaries. Mid-Feb- ruary, Smalle indicated that the DA would be calling on the MEC for Cooperative Governance in Limpopo, Ms Makoma Makhurupetje, to invoke Section 139 (1) of the Constitution, whereby the provinces would be obliged to intervene if there were financial crises at municipalities. The reason for this, Smalle said, was that the DA had noted the “unacceptable conduct by the municipality to utilise the municipal infrastructure grant (MIG) to pay salaries of the employees instead of applying the funds for the intended purposes.” He stated that, according to the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) and MIG policy, these grants could not be used to finance operational expenditure other than the prescribed to the percentage permitted for the operation of project costs. This fuelled speculation once more that the VDM was facing a more serious financial crisis than a mere cash-flow problem. “Last year, the municipal- ity failed to compile the financial report timeously and refused to return R167 million to the national treasury because of underspending. The vexatious disregard of the PMFA regulations resulted in the treasury’s withholding a portion of their equitable share, which led to non-payment and/or late pay- ment of creditors,” Smalle said. He said the fact that several key positions at the municipality remained vacant did not help the situation either, referring to the vacant position of the municipal manager, chief financial officer, infrastructure general manager and community service general manager. “It is clear that urgent intervention is needed to acceler- ate services to the people in Vhembe. The DA has already requested MEC Makhurupetje to establish a forensic investigation into the financial affairs of the municipality,” Smalle said. After almost three weeks of trying to elicit a response from the VDM regarding Smalle’s al- legations, Ralushai responded on Wednesday by vehemently denying that grant money was being used to pay salaries. “The municipality made an arrangement with the bank to pay salaries,” Ralushai said. He said people must remember that grant money was given conditionally and that the process was strictly controlled. He again stated categorically that the VDM did not use any grant money to finance their operational expenditure and that all grant money they received was being used to fund the projects it had been allocated for. Ralushai admitted that vacancies in key posi- tions at the municipality were also of concern to them. The situation was not improved when their assisting municipal manager resigned at the end of February. According to Ralushai they were, however, addressing the issue. Concern is growing among residents of the region that the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) is border-line bankrupt, if not bankrupt already.

VDM spokesperson Mr Matodzi Ralushai as-sured the Limpopo Mirror on Wednesday, however, that the municipality is not bankrupt.

In response, Ralushai admitted that salary pay-ments for January were delayed but that payments were eventually made. He attributed the late payment to a cash-fl ow problem the VDM had experienced at the time but added that the VDM was fi nancially stable.

The question at that stage was where the VDM got the money from to pay the salaries. Mid-Feb-ruary, Smalle indicated that the DA would be calling on the MEC for Cooperative Governance in Limpopo, Ms Makoma Makhurupetje, to invoke Section 139 (1) of the Constitution, whereby the provinces would be obliged to intervene if there were fi nancial crises at municipalities. The reason for this, Smalle said, was that the DA had noted the “unacceptable conduct by the municipality to utilise the municipal infrastructure grant (MIG) to pay salaries of the employees instead of applying the funds for the intended purposes.” He stated that, according to the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) and MIG policy, these grants could not be used to fi nance operational expenditure other than the prescribed to the percentage permitted for the operation of project costs.

This fuelled speculation once more that the VDM was facing a more serious fi nancial crisis than a mere cash-fl ow problem. “Last year, the municipal-ity failed to compile the fi nancial report timeously and refused to return R167 million to the national treasury because of underspending. The vexatious disregard of the PMFA regulations resulted in the treasury’s withholding a portion of their equitable share, which led to non-payment and/or late pay-ment of creditors,” Smalle said. He said the fact that several key positions at the municipality remained vacant did not help the situation either, referring to the vacant position of the municipal manager, chief fi nancial offi cer, infrastructure general manager and community service general manager. “It is clear that urgent intervention is needed to acceler-ate services to the people in Vhembe. The DA has already requested MEC Makhurupetje to establish a forensic investigation into the fi nancial affairs of the municipality,” Smalle said.

After almost three weeks of trying to elicit a response from the VDM regarding Smalle’s al-legations, Ralushai responded on Wednesday by vehemently denying that grant money was being used to pay salaries. “The municipality made an arrangement with the bank to pay salaries,” Ralushai said. He said people must remember that grant money was given conditionally and that the process was strictly controlled. He again stated categorically that the VDM did not use any grant money to fi nance their operational expenditure and that all grant money they received was being used to fund the projects it had been allocated for.

Ralushai admitted that vacancies in key posi-tions at the municipality were also of concern to them. The situation was not improved when their assisting municipal manager resigned at the end of February. According to Ralushai they were, however, addressing the issue. He indicated that they had already asked the provincial government for assistance and that the province had deployed an administrator to act as interim accounting offi cer. Concern about VDM’s finances

“Please bring back our baby boy ...”

R10 000 bail for Tshiozwi teacher

(From page 1)The positions of chief financial

officer, infrastructure general man-ager and community service general manager remain vacant, however. “The position of municipal manager has been advertised, but a suitable candidate has not been identified,” Ralushai said.

To add insult to injury regarding the VDM’s financial affairs, members of the Sherriff’s office confiscated millions of rands worth of vehicles and office equipment on Friday. This after the Polokwane High Court had ruled in favour of a former contractor, NW Engineering, in a R14 million lawsuit against the VDM. The con-tractor took the VDM to court after they had terminated their contract with him for the construction of a

new reservoir in Louis Trichardt in 2008. The contractor initially won the lawsuit for unfair termination of his contract, but the VDM took it on appeal, which they lost.

Asked how this would impact on the day-to-day running of the VDM, Ralushai said that, following Friday’s seizure of good at their offices, their legal team met with the contractor on Saturday. “The matter was resolved during Saturday’s legal engagement and all goods were returned on Sun-day morning,” Ralushai said.

In conclusion, Ralushai was asked if the VDM was able to pay their officials and employees on time at the end of February. He said that all employees had been paid without any problems. “All our service providers were also paid,” he said.

(From page 1)An unknown woman, who was sitting next to

them, was praising the child and remarked that the boy was very beautiful. The woman apparently even claimed that the grandmother did not know how to look after children, as the child was crying. “I’ve been staying with my grandchildren ever since they were born, but this baby was staying with his mother in Tshikikinini at Matsa village,” said Agnes.

While Agnes was waiting for her children to return, the unknown woman started complaining about pains and said she had a womb disease. She then asked Agnes to get her some fruit juice from the shops, since she could not do so herself because of the pain.

“She insisted I leave the child behind, since I was not going to spend time at the shops. I imagined the pain she might be feeling and then went to the shops,” Agnes said. She said that when she looked back after crossing the road, the woman had already vanished into thin air with the child. The shopping complex was also more crowded than usual.

Agnes said she immediately alerted the Mphe-

phu police about the incident when her children returned from the shops. They looked everywhere, but the woman could not be found. The police even went as far as Wylliespoort and searched every taxi from the complex but could not find anything.

Ms Rudzani appealed to the unknown woman to bring her child back.

“This is agonising; we don’t even have a picture of my child,” said Ms Rudzani.

Meanwhile, the police are appealing to anyone who might have information on the whereabouts of the child or any information on the woman who took the baby, to contact the nearest police station for the information to be followed up.

“The investigating officer, warrant officer Mpfu-ni, can be contacted at 071 482 8671. Information can also be provided anonymously via the crime line at 08600 10111, or people can approach their nearest police station,” said the provincial spokes-person, Col Ronel Otto.

The unknown woman was described as Ven-da-speaking, tall and slender and dark in com-plexion. She was wearing a blue skirt and a blue long-sleeve jacket at the time of the incident.

A 54-year-old teacher, Mr Gilbert Mamburu from Tsh-iozwi village in Sinthumule, appeared in court last Friday on a charge of the possession of illegal cigarettes. He was released after paying bail of R10 000.

The teacher was arrested last Thursday, along with three of his alleged associates. His co-ac-cused, Takuzo Mutswiro (22), Tatenda Nyamhunga (31) and Joseph Mhembwe (27) were remanded in custody. All three

are Zimbabwean citizens. They will appear again in the Tshil-wavhusiku Magistrate’s court next Tuesday (March 17).

According to a statement by the provincial spokesperson, Col Ronel Otto, police officials followed up on information they received about suspicious activi-ties at the teacher’s house. “Upon arrival at the scene, three suspects attempted to run away, but they were quickly apprehended by the members,” said Col Otto.

The police discovered illegal

cigarettes with an estimated value of more than R2 million in a small truck as well as a light delivery vehicle.

According to the police, the origin of the cigarettes, as well as their destination, forms part of the investigation.

Meanwhile, the Tshilwavhusi-ku police spokesperson, Consta-ble Thilivhali Malowa, said the investigations were continuing. “We confiscated a truck, a mini-van and illegal cigarettes worth R2 million,” said Const Malowa.

Well-known singer Adv Mike Makhado and Masindi Makhado tied the knot at the Makhado municipal show grounds on Saturday.

MM in hiding after second attackMakhado’s municipal man-ager, Mr Sakkie Mutshinyali, has taken a leave of absence from work and gone into hid-ing after an apparent second failed attempt on his life.

Last week, the Limpopo Mir-ror reported on what Mutshiny-ali was sure was a failed attempt on his life on Saturday, 21 February. The incident occurred in the late afternoon while he was jogging along the farm road leading back to his house near the Cloud’s End Hotel. He was confronted by three men, one of whom pulled out a handgun, cocked it and aimed it at Mutshinyali. Mutshinyali was fortunate to escape uninjured, but the event left him severely traumatized.

Last Thursday when news was received that a second attempt to ambush and kill Mutshinyali had apparently been made. Mutshinyali was contacted immediately but was almost too distraught to talk.

According to him, he was travelling to work on the same road on which the 21 Febru-ary attack occurred. This was around 07:15.

“There is a place along that stretch of road where you need to slow down because of pot-

holes. It was there that they were waiting for me,” Mutshinyali said.

The “they” Mutshinyali was referring to were seven heavily armed men, three of them stand-ing in front of a grey BMW 4 series with a GP registration number. Mutshinyali suspects that he might have caught them off guard by traveling to work earlier than usual. The men jumped into their vehicle and fled the scene upon spotting him. They might also have been unaware that Mutshinyali was travelling with armed security guards after the 21 February attack.

Mutshinyali tried to chase down the men, but lost them in the early morning traffic in Louis Trichardt. Trying to di-rect messages to the police via cell phone during the chase did nothing to improve the situation either.

The event has left Mutshin-yali even more traumatised, to such an extent that it was rumoured that he had told the Agapé congregation, of which he and his family are members, on Sunday that he was going to resign as municipal manager. This news, as well as that of the second incident, came as a

double shock to many.On Monday, the newspaper

phoned Mutshinyali to enquire whether or not he had indeed resigned as municipal manager. “Not yet, but I am seriously considering it,” Mutshinyali said. He said, however, that he had opted to take extended leave and was already travelling to an undisclosed destination. “My life is at stake. I am living in fear. Now I have security, but for how long will they guard me? If you were me, what would you do? These people want me to resign and will kill me if I don’t,” Mutshinyali said.

Makhado police spokesper-son Const Irene Radzilane con-firmed on Wednesday that the police are aware of the second incident and are investigating a case of enticement to commit murder and a case of intimi-dation. “The investigation is continuing, but at this stage the two cases have not been linked,” Radzilane said. At provincial level, the police are also looking into the incidents. “The matter was brought to the attention of the crime intelligence unit and is being investigated,” said provincial police spokesperson Col. Ronel Otto.

In the meantime, speculation is rife as to what might have motivated these attacks on Mutshin-yali.

Many believe that it is in retaliation of the external investigation Mutshinyali launched at the end of last year, following allegations of corruption with regard to tender pay-ments made without actual services being rendered.

This investigation had already led to the suspension of the mu-nicipality’s expendi-ture finance manager in December, with the preliminary re-port compiled by the investigating com-pany indicating that more suspensions and even criminal charges against individuals could follow. This investigation is still ongoing.Mr Sakkie Mutshinyali

“All we need are classes and proper desks ...”

Pupils of Michael Denga Ramabulana High School in Maila are still receiving tuition while sitting on the fl oor, while others are being taught outside.

The pupils are studying under diffi cult conditions because the school is seriously overcrowded. The Grade 8 pupils are attending classes outside, while the other grades take turns being taught inside the classrooms. The school has a total enrolment of 840 and has only 12 classrooms.

The school’s classrooms are supposed to accom-modate between 40 and 50 pupils, but some of the

classrooms are overfl owing with more than 70 pupils. So little space is available that the teacher can barely fi t in the gap between the pupils’ knees in the front row and the chalkboard. Pupils squash together next to the steel frames of what were once desks. Some use pieces of wood taken from broken desks or anything fl at they can fi nd as a surface to put their books on.

“All we need is classes and desks to accommo-date our children,” said community member Ms Kutama Muthathedzwa. “We have applied many times to the department for classes, but our pleas have not yielded any fruits.” Muthathedzwa said that mobile classrooms could alleviate the situation as the lack of classrooms was a matter requiring ur-gent attention. “Either that, or else the government must build classes for our children.”

She also said that teaching children outside put a lot of pressure on the teachers, since there were many things that could distract the pupils from learning. “It is quite shocking and disappointing to still fi nd our children attending classes under a

tree or sitting on the fl oor,” Muthathedzwa said. “We call upon the Department of Education to make an urgent intervention and build classrooms for our children. A nation that does not invest in the education of its children is a dying nation.”

The school also does not have toilets. One of the pupils, Dakalo Mulaifa, said they

were often tired because they had to stand for long periods while attending classes. He said the pupils studied under diffi cult conditions, citing the temperature in the classroom as one aspect. He said they also had to put their books on their laps to be able to write. “We cannot continue attending classes outside,” he said. One of the parents threa-thened that if the department failed to deliver the necessary furniture, they were going to march to the department’s offi ce. He said the pupils would not be able to produce quality results if these con-ditions prevailed. The principal of the school, Mr Patrick Mabogo, did not want to speak to the press.

The spokesperson for the Department of Educa-tion, Mr Paene Galane, said that there was a back-log in the department. He said that many schools around the province were running short of classes. He said that they had already submitted a report to the relevant department.

The SAPS at Tshilwavhusiku are calling upon members of the community who are looking for a missing person to come and find out if the decomposed body which was found hanging from the roof rafters is not of their relative.

The body, which could not be identified, was found at a deserted house in Ravele village about two weeks ago.

The neighbours of a one-room house noticed that there was an un-

pleasant stench coming from their neighbour's place and notified the police.

According to the spokesperson for the Tshilwavhusiku police, Sgt Thilivhali Maloa, the deceased, who is suspected to be a male, was wearing a pair of blue jeans, a red short-sleeved T-shirt and black belt. “We are requesting any community members who might have information about this incident or the deceased to come forward,” Maloa said.

Who is this missing man?

The chairperson of the Vuwani Development Task Team, Mr Velly Mtileni (right), shakes hands with Mr Ike Thema from the premier’s office.

The residents of the Vuwani area are optimistic that the current “lack of service deliv-ery” will soon be a thing of the past in all the villages affected.

This comes after the Vuwani Development Task Team even-tually received a response from the office of Pres Jacob Zuma. The president's office liaised with the Limpopo premier's office, who then deployed the general manager of service delivery improvement, Mr Ike Thema.

“We met with the task team and all role players within the government,” said Thema. “We agreed that we were going to forge a working relationship to address the challenges of service delivery within the communities.”

The task team was established in 2009 after the community members realised that it was important to forge a way of peaceful engagement with local and district municipalities, the office of the premier and the

national government, to make sure that their concerns on the lack of service delivery were heard and attended to.

Ever since then, several peaceful marches and demon-strations have been staged under the auspices of the Vuwani Development Task Team, where memorandums of concern where handed to the Makhado Municipality's Vuwani Regional Office.“Each time we strove to be heard, but they weren't ready to give us an ear,” said the task team's chairperson, Mr Velly Mtileni. “We spoke with the provincial government, but they closed their ears to our cries.

That's the reason why we decided to let the president know about our cries for service delivery. Our government must understand that the task team is not an arm or extension of any political party formed to advance personal glory.”

The task team had been re-questing the government, and mainly the Makhado Munici-

pality, to consider opening up, grading or even tarring some roads which serve as major links between villages. Other concerns include water and san-itation, development of Vuwani township as an industrial zone and reputable town, and the sewerage system.

“A mall has been approved, but construction has not started so far,” Mtileni said. “We need a health centre and secondary school of our own. We further need electricity installed at all new units within our villages.”

According to Mtileni, a del-egation from the Makhado Municipality was present at Friday's meeting, among them Cllr Shonisani Sinyosi (portfo-lio head: technical services and infrastructure).

The villages which the task team represents are, but not limited to, Ha-Davhana (Bal-anganani), Tshimbupfe, Hanani, Ngwekhulu, Sundani, Malonga, Vyeboom, Vuwani Township, Vuu, Masia, and N'wamatatani.

Promises of a “working relationship”

Well-known TV cameraman passes awayThe media fraternity is in mourning, following the death of well-known cameraman for eTV, Elelwani Rampfumedzi (38).

He died on Monday morning at the MediClinic in Sandton after a short illness. News of his death spread like wildfire and a large contingent of friends and colleagues from the media industry visited the family’s home at Tshilivho.

The spokesperson for the family, Mr Tondi Ragimana, said the family was saddened by the passing away of Elelwani as he was regarded as important to the family. “We are truly devastated, as we have lost a pillar of the family. Everyone looked up to him for advice,” he said. “He dedicated his life to serving the community without expecting anything in return.” He said that Rampfumedzi had worked for the SABC, the Limpopo SAPS and eTV as cameraman.

In a message of condolence, Mr Kenny Mathivha, spokesperson for Limpopo Premier Stan Mathabatha, expressed his heartfelt and deepest condolences “to a young man I can claim to have mentored in the world of journalism.” He said he saw Elelwani growing up, asking a lot of questions.

The interim chairperson of the Limpopo Media Forum, Mr Matodzi Makananisa, described Ramp-fumedzi as a great man whose sweat and hard work had brought many changes in the community he served. He said Rampfumedzi was a mentor to young journalists, an icon of hope, a role model and a true leader who displayed distinguished leadership skills in his society. He described the death of Rampfumedzi as a terrible blow to the media fraternity.

The senior reporter in government communica-tion, Mr Nthambeleni Gabara, said the cruelty of death had robbed the media of one of the most re-liable media men. “He was always there whenever he was needed. The media industry will no longer be the same without him. He might have gone, but his good work will remain to be seen.”

Rampfumedzi is survived by his wife and children and will buried on Saturday at Tshilivho graveyard at 06:00. A memorial service will be held at the Tshilivho Living Gospel Church today (Friday).

Mr Elewani Rampfumedzi.

Mutshutshu Secondary School near Mutale greeted one of the region’s best-known teachers last Friday. Ms Sophy Kharivhe went on pension after a teaching career of 22 years. “We will never forget her contribution in uplifting the standard of education in the school and the community. She has served us and the pupils with dedication,” said the principal of the school, Mr Ntavhanyeni Nelufule. In our photograph, Nelufule and Mr Fhatuwani Ravhutsi, the deputy principal, join hands with Ms Kharivhe, with some of the pupils saying goodbye. Photo: Silas Nduvheni.

A selling point for License to print money was available during the launch.

Mrs Angie'tjie Phaswana, the wife of the author, lights the candle.

“People must stop being beggars” “Being lazy to think and strat-egise is killing a lot of people,” said Dr Ntavhanyeni Phaswa-na. He addressed the guests during the launch of his new book, License to print money, at Kennington Lodge a fort-night ago.

“In this book, I write about the Tshakhuma Market Mentality – when one person opens up a stall and sells fruit and vegetables, all people want to sell fruit and vegetables. A human being's brain is not conditioned to think like that or work in that fashion. There are more other things that you can do.”

He spoke at length on the fact that people should not rely on begging. “Muthu ha li nga u humbela – u fanela u tou shuma (Each one of us must stop being a beggar and start working)!” he said.

He then urged the audience to transfer the skills of saving

money (and using money wisely) to their children as well. “You buy a pair of socks on credit account, one sock goes missing and you are still paying for a pair of socks which you no longer have!” he said.

“Why don't you save money and only buy in cash?”

“Nandoni Dam could be filled to capacity with water, but if one finds that there are numer-ous leaks along the pipes, even people who stay close to the dam will still not have water,” he said. “If you do not close up the leaks through which your money dis-appears, you will still be without money.”

All the successful persons who are mentioned in the book to il-lustrate points were also invited to the book launch and each was given an opportunity to speak from the podium. Among them is a former pupil of Dr Phaswana, businessman Mr Sam Ntshauba.

Ntshauba gave Phaswana a gift of R5 000 cash. “I understand there are books you have given to people free of charge, as you are a man with a good heart,” he said. “With this money, I am paying for all those copies.”

Phaswana said he would use that amount to print more copies of License to print money.

The event was also attended by Thovhele Vho-Gole Mphaphuli. Dr Happy Ramakhanya critically reviewed the book.

Mrs Angie'tjie Phaswana, the wife to the author, lit a huge red candle and said it was a well-wish for the book to reach a wide range of readers and touch their lives. “May God help, so that this book becomes a spotlight in this world,” she said. “I ask God to remove the curtain that hinders His people from seeing and reaching success.”

License to print money is avail-able in good bookshops.

Dr Ntavhanyeni Phaswana says people must stop being beggars.

Joe Shirimani creates electrifying sounds

The 29-year-old Afro-jazz/soul musician, Muofhe Lavine Mulovhedzi, was a lucky young girl who had great teachers back in her primary-school days. They encouraged her to follow her musical talent and mentored her musical abilities.

“I joined concerts and competitions throughout my high school life and even met my fi rst band members there,” she revealed.

Her debut album, Mysteries of love, was re-leased in August last year, which has standout tracks such as Ndzhieni, Ni Da Lini and Mysteries of love.

A resident of Tshishivhe village, she was born at Mukula village and grew up in the mining town of Carletonville. “I later left the busy city for some tranquillity back in Venda,” she said. “Music began very early for me.”

Her parent loved music. “My father exposed me

Black is Beautiful. The album was released by BMB records. “It kickedstarted my music career as a solo artist, introducing me to the Xitsonga market,” he shares. “Record com-

panies started to truly recognise my abilities as an artist and producer.”

In 1994, he discovered and produced Esta M’s album, Sakamela, which sold in excess of 50 000 copies (platinum sales status). In the same year, he discovered and produced Penny Penny’s album, which sold in excess of 150 000 copies (triple platinum). “That was the beginning of my true success in the music industry - what a way to begin!” he remembers. “I released Hambanini, which had a hit track, Notshi, in 1997. It man-aged to sell more than 50 000 units.”

After massive success, and the problems and demands that so often come along with success, Shirimani left the music business to answer to his ancestral calling to become a traditional healer. He took a complete break from the industry for several years.

His comeback album, Ta Tika, is currently number 1 in the Xitsonga Tradtional music in-dustry in term of sales, radio play/charts.

He scooped the best Xitsonga Album in 2014 at the South African Traditional Music Awards (Satma), and the Dr Thomas Chauke Artist of the Year at the Munghana Lonene FM awards ceremony.

Veteran musician, singer and producer Joe Shirimani is a multi-award-winning artist who has so far stood the test of time.

Many of the artists who entered the music in-dustry at the same time that he did are nowhere to be seen. Shirimani remains among a few who are still pushing hard to be heard and remain stable.

“I started music at the tender age of eight when my father bought a guitar that he used to play in the evening to entertain us at home,” he recalls. “After learning to play the guitar by using my father’s, I bought my own guitar.”

Shirimani learnt to compose his own songs and not only play other people’s music. This convinced him to attempt a career in the music business.

“I decided to buy my own guitar to practice my own songs,” he said. “I formed a youth band. We called ourselves Kimayos (short for ‘kind masters of youth sound’). The band was famous in our village and used to play at weddings, halls and at school concerts. People loved what we were doing.”

In 1992, Shirimani released a solo album, titled

At some stage she met the highly talented pro-ducer and engineer, Hani Mutele, who recorded Mysteries of love along with Vuyo Manyike,

She is inspired by musicians such as Sibongile Khumalo. “I think she is the best vocalist in this country and one of the best writers I know,” she said. “Her music is authentic and soothing. I also love Gloria Bosman, Zolani Mahola, Siphiwe Dana and Vho-Irene Mawela.”

She concluded by saying that being a musician or singer means that she has the ability to move people. “Not physically but in their hearts and their minds,” she said. “I have the opportunity to soothe a heart and to bring people together with this God-given gift. It simply means I am blessed.”

She is also a poet and a writer. Her fi rst novel will be launched in June.

Elder Titus Mathukha (holding walking stick) and his wife, Selinah, celebrate the day with his children and members of the congregation.

“Damaging property serves no purpose”Young people were urged to take education seriously and stay away from damaging and burning schools as a way of showing anger for what they are fighting for, said Archbish-op Erick Mureri of the United African Apostolic Church (UAAC).

The UAAC is also known as “Kereke ya Dzhonanditi” and Mureri made the call during the closing of a conference in honour of Titus Mathukha, the founder of the church branch in Ha-Sundani village outside Vuwani .

Mureri also expressed his wor-

ry about community members who continued hating foreign people such as Ethiopians, Indi-ans and Zimbabweans. He said the foreigners were also human beings and that they deserved better treatment in South Africa.

The event was held in the church at Ha-Sundani village a fortnight ago and several prom-inent people, such Chief Livhu-wani Matsila, Muvhango actor Gabriel Themudzani, several traditional leaders and members of the congregation attend the ceremony.

Mr Titus Mathukha (91) was

born and bred in Ha-Mabila vil-lage outside Mutale, but moved to Ha-Sundani village in Vuwani in the late 60s, while pursuing his business in these areas.

He later formed the UAAC branch in Sundani. During the event, he thanked God, his wife Selinah and the community for the support he received since he arrived at the village. “Now, I am old and I wish for the con-gregation to go from strength to strength. I would like my children and the congregation to follow in my footsteps and make the branch grow bigger and bigger.”

Some of the pupils of Madabani Primary, photographed with the new laptop computers.

Pupils from Madabani Primary will soon be able to network and communicate with the outside world. The foundation of well-known singer Judith Sephuma presented 20 new laptop computers to the school last Thursday. Mr Thabo Sephuma from the foundation said that there was a need to develop the areas they served. He said his organisation was deeply touched by the conditions in which rural learners found themselves. The principal, Mr Daniel Magwala, said the computers will assist the school in their daily activities and it was also a sign that the foundation was serious about education. In our photo, Magwala receives a laptop from Thaba Sephuma (second from right). Third from left is the MEC for Public Works, Mr Jerry Ndou.

The Department of Health has just started the first round of the 2015 campaign to vaccinate girls against the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV).

This year, the campaign targets all girls who are nine years and older and in Grade 4, as well as those born in 2005 attending special schools.

The MEC for Health, Mr Ishmael Kgetjepe, has called upon all parents to give consent for their children to be vaccinated "as this would ensure that they are protected from being prone to cervical cancer in the later stages of their lives."

He mentioned that the success of the previous campaign was due to the cooperation between parents and

the department of basic education, "as well as all other partners who have made a meaningful contribution throughout the campaign." During the launch of the campaign in March last year, a total of 2 406 schools were targeted and 2 029 were reached. In September 2014, out of a target of 2 406 schools, 2 202 schools were reached..

“Parents should know that HPV vaccine provides protection against cancer of the cervix, caused by HPV type 16 and 18, which are primary causes of cervical cancer. Teams started visiting schools from 20 Feb-ruary and the campaign will end on 23 March this year,” said Kgetjepe.

The happy family, photographed with the donor and Pastor Lehasa. From left to right are Lehasa, Mr Simon Ndou Mabidi, Mr Simon Khoza and his wife, Johana, and Cllr Sarah Luduvhungu.

A destitute family of Mashamba, Mr Simon Khoza, his wife and their four children, were very happy when Mabidi & Sons Construction started to build them a six-roomed house on Saturday.

The family share living and sleep-ing in a mud hut with no proper floor. The family survive on the grant Kho-za receives.

This is a modern house, with three bedrooms, a bathroom, kitchen and a lounge.

Mr Steven Ndou of Mabidi of Mabidi & Sons Construction donated the material for the house. Khoza said getting a house was a miracle for him. “When sleeping in my hut, I could

see the moon from inside, and during heavy rains we would go and ask for shelter in my sister’s huts.” He said the donation was God’s answer to their suffering.

Khoza said that he first registered for an RDP house around 2005, but the application was unsuccessful. No reason was given why his name was not approved. Members of the Naza-rene Church noticed their heartbreak-ing living conditions and decided to ask donations from business people to build him a house. “We know that God is love. When we give to those who do not have, we are only demon-strating that kind of love,” said the church’s pastor, Elvis Lehasa.

A large number of beautiful girls from around the Makhado area attended last weekend's first auditions of this year’s Miss Madombidzha Arsenal FC beauty pageant. The event is part of a fundraiser for the club. The auditions will continue tomorrow (Saturday) with the start of the elimination round, as only 20 glamorous ladies between the ages of 15 and 21 will compete during in the final. The final of the competition will take place on 3 April at the Makhado show grounds. The final audition round will take place on the 28th of this month. One of the event organisers, Mr Trinity Tshivhula, says this year’s prizes will be better than last year. In our photo are some of the organisers and young ladies who auditioned for the competition on Saturday.

Mudau wins a national teaching award

Univen lecturer raises funds for childrenA lecturer at the University of Venda, Miss Lufuno Sadiki (25) from Louis Trichardt, continues to help children who are living in abject poverty to ensure that they enjoy educa-tion freely.

Through sponsorships she managed to raise at least 100 pairs of school shoes and 70 school shirts.

Last Monday she donated 30 pairs of school shoes to pupils of Joas Pahlela Primary School and 70 pairs of shoes as well as shirts to Makahlule Primary School. Prior to these donations, she also donated 26 school jerseys to the pupils Tshinomela Primary

School. Helping children has been her

vision since she was confronted by the hardships of the pupils of Mambedi Primary School in Valdezia last year. The children couldn’t afford to raise funds for the school farewell function and she then decided to launch a project to assist them. Since then, she had committed her time to help children who are confronted with dire challenges.

“Through our foundation we are initially providing them (chil-dren) with uniforms and food and then we will start helping them to focus on their education and produce good results,” she said.

She also acknowledged the immense support she was receiv-ing from her sponsors and her family and friends. “I shall also send my sincere gratitude to Lu-metech, Mphulo.com Financial Services, NTKL Trading, on-line intelligence and to my family and friends. Their support has been overwhelming,” she said.

Sadiki said it was only when children were assisted that the social problems of society, such as crime, could be curbed. “The foundation will prevent young children from ending up in the streets and dropping out of school because of their situations at home,” she added.

Ms Lufuno Sadiki is photographed with the children of Tshimonela Primary School with their new jerseys.

A teacher of Jonathan Mushaathama High at Tshirolwe, Mr Thomas Mudau, received a national reward for his efforts to promote physical science teaching in the area.

During the 15th National Teaching Awards at Midrand on Saturday evening, Mudau received

the award from the Minister of Basic Education, Ms Angie Motshekga.

Motshekga said that the awards were meant to encourage educators to work hard for the purpose of improving education in South Africa. “We have seen positive results since we started with the idea of the award ceremony some years ago. This creates a spirit of hard work and helps to improve results in our country,” she said.

Motshekga said that the aim of competition was to identify, acknowledge and recognise the best practices by those teachers from different nine provinces and thereby instil a love for maths and science in their learners.

Mudau went home with R50 000, a new car, a certificate, a trophy, a tablet and a cell phone.

The humble Mudau said he was not motivated by greed as he did not get incentives for achieving outstanding results.

“I do not get paid extra for my achievements, but I stay at school after the normal schooling for the sake of our pupils,” he said. He said teaching was a calling to him and it was for the love of his learners that he went the extra mile in assisting all of them to pass.

“I am urging other teachers to work very hard to ensure that our learners are getting the necessary education they deserve,” he said. Mudau thanked the department for initiating the competition.

He thanked his principal and his colleagues for being supportive of his dream. “We could not have achieved this much if it were not for the cooperation and unity that we have here at school,” added Mudau.

The general manager of MTG Funeral Services, Mr Shudufhadza Magwabeni (third from right) hands over a cheque to the chairman of Thulfa, Mr Aifheli Tshisikule (left), while other dignitaries look on.

The pre l iminary-round matches for the MTG and PIB Soccer Challenge will be staged at various places this weekend.

The competition was official-ly launched during a ceremony at the Thohoyandou Indoor Sports Centre on Tuesday eve-ning.

During the ceremony, the general manager of MTG Funer-al Services, Mr Shundufhadza Magwabeni, stated that his com-pany would continue to sponsor the Thulamela Local Football Association in the coming years.

He revealed that they were impressed by the manner in which the association managed its finances. He appealed to the players and fans to behave well at the matches, saying any

form of misconduct at matches brought both the league and the sponsors’ names into dis-repute. He stressed the fact that it was his company’s wish to see Thulamela Local Football Association teams producing players for the national teams.

He presented a cheque to the value of R146 000 to the chairman of the association, Mr Aifheli Tshisikule. Magwabeni further indicated that his com-pany spent a large amount of money in the form of donations and sponsorships towards com-munity development projects every year.

The champions of the com-petition will take home a cash prize of R20 000, a floating tro-phy, soccer kit and gold medals. The runners-up will take home

R15 000 cash, a soccer kit and silver medals.

A cheque to the value of R7 500, soccer kit and bronze medals are awaiting the team that will finish in the third spot. The fourth-placed team will be presented with R5 000 and a soccer kit.

The teams booted out of the competition in the quarterfinals will each receive a soccer kit. The best player of the tour-nament, top goal scorer, best goalkeeper and the player who will score the most beautiful goal will also receive prizes.

As has been the case the last two years, the final will be played on the 16th of June. The venue will be named at a later stage.

Heavy fi nes for the offending Safa Vhembe teams

Artists and Young Chiefs in 1-1 draw

Leopards are hunting for more points

During its sitting at the league’s offi ces in Thohoyandou last Thursday evening, the disciplinary committee of the Safa Vhembe League imposed heavy fi nes on several clubs, including the league contenders in Stream E, Makhitha Oscar Stars.

Stars were found guilty of fielding Thembisani Neluvhada, who was not properly registered. They were fined

R5 000 and three points were awarded to their opponents, Makhitha Iyarunga FC.

Dididi Flying Swallows received a fi ne of R5 000 for assaulting the referee in their match against Makhovha All Stars, while Zoutpansberg Powerline were fi ned R600 for causing the abandonment of the match against Makhitha Oscar Stars. The three match points were also awarded to Stars.

Tshakhumanandilani FC were fined

R5 000 for bringing the league into disrepute in their match against Maweja Takers and they forfeited the points to their opponents.

An amount of R2 500 was suspended for a year and the rest must be paid within 30 days.

Madritas were fined R5 000 for as-saulting the referee in their match against Hosana Citizen FC.

Black Leopards have reason to believe that they will add to the woes of Maluti FET College when they meet in their National First Division

League match at the Charles Mopedi Stadium in Phuthaditshaba tomorrow afternoon.

A quick glance at the NFD league log shows that Maluti FET College will be lucky if, by chance, they manage to hold Lidoda Duvha to a draw.

The Free State side is currently lying at the bot-tom of the log with 11 points accumulated from 22 outings. While Maluti will need a miracle to escape the relegation axe, Black Leopards must win the match at all costs in order to remain in contentiont for the league title. The Thohoyandou outfi t is lying in sixth position with 33 points, eight behind the pace setters, Lamontville Golden Arrows.

Black Leopards are still to lose a match under the guidance of their newly appointed head coach, Mr Zeca Marques. The Leopards defence, which is marshalled by Marks Munyai, Dunga Munganga and Harry Nyirenda, is rock solid, while Bongani Manana and Leonard Ntshangase are expected to make things happen at the forefront.

Maluti lost 0-5 to Black Leopards in their fi rst-round league match at the Thohoyandou Stadium fi ve months ago.

In another NFD match, Jomo Cosmos will fl y to Cape Town, where they will lock horns with Santos at the Athlone Stadium. A match not to be missed will be between Thanda Royal Zulu and Cape Town All Stars at the Umhlathuze Sports Complex in Richards Bay.

Garankuwa United will host Lamontville Golden Arrows at the Pilditch Stadium in Pretoria. The Cape Town derby between Vasco da Gama and Milano United will be staged at the Parow Park Stadium.

African Warriors will meet Witbank Spurs, while Baroka FC will entertain FC Cape Town at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.

The only match to be played this evening will be between Royal Eagles and Highlandspark at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Durban.

Black Leopards’ dribbling wizard, Leonard Ntshangase.

The Lufule open ground was packed to capac-ity last Sunday when United Artists played to a goalless draw with Ngwenani Young Chiefs in their MMK Administrators League match.

The hosts, United Artists, could have sealed the game within the fi rst 20 minutes of the game, but their strikers seemed to have left their scoring boots at home. At that stage, the Young Chiefs defenders were running for cover.

Realizing that the opposition were all over them, Young Chiefs abandoned their positions to

solidify their defence for a moment and left Tshif-hiwa Ramatsea as a lone striker. The strategy worked for them as the Artists’ technical staff seemed to have run out of ideas for the better part of the fi rst half.

Things turned against United Artists short-ly after Young Chiefs introduced their drib-bling wizard, Tshifhiwa “One-one” Nedzamba, towards the end of the

fi rst half. Tshifhiwa Ramatsea of Young Chiefs was warned with a card for obstruction two minutes into the last half. Tshifhiwa Munyai of United Artists was also reprimanded for a similar infringement fi ve minutes later.

The Young Chiefs keeper, Tshimangadzo Mu-lovhedzi, made his presence felt in the 59th minute. He stretched to the limit to execute a brilliant save. This was after Mashudu Siobo unleashed a pow-erful half volley from the edge of the penalty box.

Vutomi Ngomana of United Artists was lucky to go away with just a yellow card in the 64th minute. He handled the ball intentionally in front of the assistant referee.

Maduvha Mudologi of United Artists controls the high ball.

The game turned lukewarm for about 15 minutes as both sides ballooned from behind. Tshifhiwa Nedzamba made his last attempt in the 79th minute. He unleashed a volley from just outside the box. The ball missed the goal mouth by inches, much to the disappointment of the fans.

Mashudu Siobo of United Artists hooks the ball, while Lucky Mugivhela of Young Chiefs is ready to intercept.

Tshikwani Stone Breakers take maximum points in MMK match against Powerline

“Keeping ourselves active is the best medicine,” say Matanda’s gogo team“The government is not doing anything for our elderly peo-ple. Keeping ourselves active is the best medicine for the illnesses that affect us,” said an elderly member of the Matanda old-age soccer team.

The manager of the team, Ms Rose Rambasa, said it was an honour for her to form the team. “The elderly are doing good things. Being active can help them to improve their health. With diseases such as diabetes, cancer, strokes and heart disease so prevalent, this

could work to their advantage,” she said. She encourages others to also participate in sport.

She said that the old women were true examples of female empowerment, because they were displaying that there was no longer a sporting code for a certain gender.

She also commended them for keeping themselves fit and encouraged them to maintain an active lifestyle. “By prac-tising active lifestyles, you are a very good example to your children and grandchildren and

they will simply follow in your footsteps.”

She reminded the elderly to focus on positive things, rather than to worry about the things that they cannot change.

Vho-Denga Magodi says she kept herself healthy by training twice a day. She plays soccer, because she believes this is a good way of staying fit and it also relieves stress. She started off participating in sport when she was still very young and her team mates were often young boys.

The proud members of the Matanda elderly soccer team pose for a photograph.

Zoutpansberg Powerline do-nated three league points to Tshikwani Stone Breakers when they lost 2-1 in an MMK Administrators’ League match at Tshikwani on Sunday.

Powerline was good at the far back, but their midfielders hesitated for too long and did not release the ball on time to the goal poachers. Breakers initiated several promising moves from the centre of the pitch, but were denied scoring opportunities by the solid defence of Powerline.

Thomas Machaba and Thabiso Makatu of Powerline and Abby Raphulou of Breakers were booked for different infringe-ments during the match.

Sukanani Netshukwi of Break-ers scored his team’s first goal in the 26th minute. The goal was a wake-up call to the players of Powerline, who came back strongly but were prevented from scoring by excellent work from keeper Nesta Nemalili. Net-shukwi scored his team’s second goal and completed his brace in

the 40th to make the half-time score 2-0.

A clearing error by Musiwa Bakali gave rise to Powerline’s goal. Thomas Machaba won the loose ball and beat the keeper with a close-range ground cut-ter. The visitors from Madabani put pressure on their opponent but failed to score. Breakers then changed their tactics and abandoned their positions. They packed themselves at the back in a bid to defend their lead, only relying on counter-attacks.

Sasko sponsors youth football league

By Kaizer Nengovhela

Anchors heartbroken after losing 1-2 in derby against Dynamos

The Thulamela football and netball teams, participating in the VhembeInterdepartmental Sports League, received their awards during a ceremony held in the Thohoyandou Town Hall last Wednesday. Although it was the first time that the municipality participated in the league, the netball team ended on top, while the football team finished in second position. The municipality presented medals and trophies to the netball and soccer players. In our photograph are the jubilant winners of the netball tournament. Photo: Silas Nduvheni.

Youth teams playing under the auspices of the Makhado Local Football Association (LFA) received a sponsorship from Sasko Bakery for the staging of a tournament.

The official launch of the sponsorship was done during a ceremony at the Mbhokota grounds two weeks ago.

The manager of Sasko Bakery, Mr Terrence Ramutshila, stated that it was the policy of his company to plough some of their profits back into the community.

He appealed to the management of the asso-ciation to utilise the money towards football de-velopment. He revealed that the sponsorship will increase from one season to the next, depending on the financial position of the business.

Ramutshila stated that sponsorships played a

vital role in sports development. He described football as a community-building

sport and emphasised that the sport has become a major role player in job creation. He attributed his business’s success “to the unlimited support from the local communities.”

The administrator of the Makhado LFA, Mr Simon Mashele, defined football as a good tool to fight unemployment and poverty. He stated that the government alone could not address the high rate of unemployment.

He also praised the management of Sasko for their decision to sponsor the association, despite the economic hardships that are facing the business community in the area.

Mashele added that 36 teams will participate in the tournament and that there will be a division for boys and for girls. The winning teams, as well as the top goal scorers, best goal keepers and players of the tournament in both divisions, will receive trophies.

Makhado LFA administrator Mr Simon Mashele and Mr Terrence Ramutshila of Sasko, photographed with the trophies.

The supporters of Tshiozwi Anchors left the Gogobole grounds with sore hearts, after their 12 defeat against their elder brothers, Tshiozwi Dynamos, in their Administrator’s League derby at Gogobole on Sunday.

Dynamos was out of touch throughout the first half and were lucky not concede any goals during the first 45 minutes. Mashudu Nen-govhela of Dynamos disappointed his team’s fans when he beat all the defenders, including the goal keeper,

but missed the target.A defender of Dynamos, Muhang-

wi Mukosi, was yellow-carded for rough tackling a few minutes later, but the scoreboard was still blank at the break.

The second half was war from the onset. Anchors started the half at a very fast pace, giving their opponents not a moment to breathe, and their midfielders distributed telling passes to the front runners.

Victor Mulaudzi of Anchors scored his team’s goal after he had received

a pre-cooked pass from Tovhowani Ramabula-na. Velaphi Mphaphuli of Dynamos forced his way through the de-fence of the opponents and was brought down inside of the penalty area and the referee, Mr Mpfariseni Musekwa, pointed to the white spot. Dynamos’ skip-per, Musiwa Mutan-dari, equalised from the white spot.

Anchors side enjoyed most of the ball pos-session throughout the game, but it was not their day. Their keep-er, Samson Masingi, was reduced to a mere spectator for the better part of the game, and he only came into the picture when Dominic Mafuleni scored Dyna-

mos’ second goal. The two veteran players of Dy-

namos, Nyathi Netshiendeulu and

Mashudu Nengovhela, were given red cards for second bookable offences late in the match.

Dynamos’ Dominic Mafuleni and Andries Masingi fight for the ball.

Black Leopards registered their sixth consec-utive victory when they beat Vasco da Gama 1-0 in their NFD match at the Thohoyandou Stadium on Saturday.

Realizing that their scoring chances were slim, Black Leopards effected the fi rst change to their starting lineup after only nine minutes. Their new signee, Jonathan King, gave way to the team’s scoring machine, Ruggert Nyundu.

The visitors from Cape Town tried to frustrate their opponents by demonstrating their rough skills. The referee did not allow them to go on with their mischief as he soon reprimanded two of them with yellow cards for different infringements. Samuel Julies was booked for a late tackle on Harry Ny-irenda, while Rowel Matthew’s obstructed Sanele

Mkhize. Vasco did not lose their fi ghting spirit, despite the two yellow cards. They continued to fi ght collectively, giving the Leopards’ defenders no time to breathe. The home side threatened to score in the 34th min-ute. Their overlapping left back, Shimi Rade-be, won a loose ball from the centre of the pitch and ran to the left corner, from where he dished a square pass. As if they were spectators, the Leopards strikers watched as the ball went past the penalty area to the right corner.

No goal was seen during the first half.

Vasco were reduced to 10 men three minutes into the last half. Moosa Jacobs was given his march-ing orders for using abusive words towards the assistant referee. Leopards replaced Sanele Mkhize and Samuel Tefu with Ivan Mahangwahaya and

Morgan Shivambu respectively. Rugger Nyundu was tackled from behind within the box in the 74th minute and it was a clear penalty for Lidoda duvha. Nyundu converted from the white spot to give his side a 1-0 victory.

Ruggert Nyundu of Black Leopards takes the penalty.

Shimi Radebe of Black Leopards kicks the ball, while Rowel Matthew

of Vasco is ready to intercept.
