BY THE WAY . . . • I want to remind everyone that Governor Murphy last week raised the maximum attendance in houses of worship in the Garden State to 50% of capacity. That means, for Saint Anthony’s, that about 200 people should be able to worship together in our church at a given Mass. While our attendance has been slowly inching up, we have not yet reached that number. I remind everyone, too, that the church is sanitized after each of our Masses. • Practical Almsgiving – I was reading an article in Smithsonian magazine on the origins of Pizza, the original fast food, in Naples, Italy (“Pie is a Constant,” March 2021). The final paragraph contained this wonderful tribute to the generosity of Neapolitans. The citizenry of Naples lives close by a volcano that’s both a memento mori and an index of the human condition. In a city with a predilection for light and shade, optimism coexists with the sober reality of death. During this era of Covid, when time can seem suspended, perhaps no Neapolitan custom is as poignant as the “pizza sospesa” (the suspended pizza), a form of generosity that involves eating one pie and paying for two, leaving the other for a less fortunate stranger. No one should be denied a pizza. It’s the food of solidarity. Who says the Neapolitans are not practicing Catholics! As we approach the mid-point of Lent perhaps it is time to take another look at that Rice Bowl (or pick one up if you haven’t) and see if a little pizza sospesa can find a place in our hearts. • Holy Week is just a month away. Last year we had a somewhat unusual Paschal Triduum Observance, since there was no congregation present for the services at all, and everything was curtailed and observed only on live stream. This year we return to almost normal. According to the most recent guidelines, all the services of the Paschal Triduum will be live and according to the regular schedule we are used to at Saint Anthony’s. There will only be a few adjustments to the regular ceremonies, namely: Holy Thursday – the foot-washing rite is omitted; Good Friday – the Veneration of the Cross will only be done by the celebrant; Holy Saturday – the congregation will gather in church (not outside) for the Easter Vigil even as the Easter Fire is burning outside. • Earlier this year, Pope Francis designated the Year 2021 as a Year of Saint Joseph to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Pope Pius IX’s designation of Saint Joseph as thee “Patron of the Universal Church” in 1871. In order to celebrate this anniversary, we at Saint Anthony’s will observe a Novena in honor of Saint Joseph beginning this Wednesday, March 10 and leading up to the saint’s feast day on March 19. On each of those nine days, at the conclusion of daily Mass, we will pray a litany in honor of Saint Joseph. I include the litany here • and invite all our parishioners to join in the novena by praying the litany over these days whenever they can. • In his Apostolic Constitution, Redemptoris Custos establishing this year as a Year of Saint Joseph, Pope Francis established as one of the conditions for gaining the plenary indulgence for the year, the act of listening to a sermon or presentation on the life and virtues of Saint Joseph. This coming week’s presentation in our Lenten series, Lent with the Saints will be on Saint Joseph, and will fulfill the obligation for the indulgence. The series continues every Wednesday evening during Lent at 7:30 in the church and live stream. • Welcome Home to the Father – Confessions are available every Monday night in Lent from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. in all the 109 church of the Paterson Diocese.

CRS RICE BOWL -- SUSTAINABILITY IN EL SALVADOR
 If you attend Mass, Rice Bowls are available at the doors of the church and we invite you to take one home with you;
 Instead of using a Rice Bowl, you may write a check made payable to St. Anthony's Church, with "Rice Bowl" on the memo line; place the check in a sealed envelope with "Rice Bowl" on the front and drop in the Offertory basket or in the rectory mail slot;
 You can donate online or by text. Please use this link found on our parish website or Facebook page https://giving.parishsoft.com/app/giving/stanthonyrcchurch.
Text a donation amount to 973-245-9778 and ParishSOFT Giving will prompt you to enter any required information. For assistance, please contact Donna Mallory at 973-427-1478 or [email protected]
Donations can be made at any time during Lent; we will accept the return of Rice Bowls themselves the weekend
after Easter. We thank you for your generosity and support.
PARISH FOOD PANTRY
We continue to distribute food from our parish pan-
try. If you are in need or know someone who is, please call Rectory at 973-427-1478. And we’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your very
generous donations of food and monetary contribu-tions during this time of the pandemic; we can’t
thank you enough for your support. If you’d like to make a donation of food, please place the item(s) in
one of the baskets in the front (main) vestibule of the church. NOTE WELL: Please do NOT give us any
expired or opened items. Check the dates on any/all items you plan on donating. If items have expired, throw them out; don’t give them to us to dispose
of. Also, we can't use items that require refrigeration.
Drought has become a big problem across El Salvador, making it difficult for farmers to produce enough crops to support their families. But new farming techniques--and a new generation of young farmers--are making a differ-ence. What would you do if your livelihood was threat-ened? How can you support young people in your commu-nity and around the world? Visit crsricebowl.org to learn more.
