FROM POPE FRANCIS

We need constantly to contemplate the mystery of mercy. It is a wellspring of joy, serenity, and peace. Our salva-

on depends on it. Mercy: the word reveals the very mystery of the Most Holy Trinity. Mercy: the ul mate and supreme act by which God comes to meet us. Mercy: the fundamental law that dwells in the heart of every person who looks sincerely into the eyes of his brothers and sisters on the path of life. Mercy: the bridge that connects God and man, opening our hearts to the hope of being loved forever despite our sinfulness.

ASSISTED SUICIDE

Stop Assisted Suicide in CA before it’s too late! Earlier this year, through a Special Session, the CA legislature passed assisted suicide, allowing doctors to prescribe overdose medica on to terminally ill pa ents. Join a coa-li on of physicians, nurses, disability-rights organiza ons, and people of all faiths to stand for the lives of our elder-ly and dying and oppose assisted suicide! Next weekend, December 12 & 13, 2015, pe ons will be available for signature outside of Masses. Signers must be registered to vote and can only sign once.

Why Oppose Assisted Suicide? • Sends the Wrong Message: Legalizing suicide for the

terminally ill, while discouraging it for the rest of the popula on, teaches that the lives of the ill and disa-bled do not ma er to our society.

• Will Worsen Pa ent Care: Pa ents in other states, like Barbara Wagner in Oregon, are being denied treatment prescribed by their doctors, and instead offered drugs for assisted suicide.

• Will Increase Non-Terminal Suicide Rates: Suicides skyrocket when assisted suicide is legalized. Oregon's suicide rate for non-terminal people increased 49% a er assisted suicide became legal.

VIRGIN MARY AND THE EUCHARIST

Some me ago as my eight year old granddaughter was preparing to receive her first Holy Communion, I asked her if she was ready and if she understood what Holy Commun-ion is all about. I received a-not-so reassuring nod. I then told her a li le story that, hopefully, would be a bit more meaningful to her – and perhaps to older folks as well. Do you remember the Bible story about when the angel visited Mary and told her that God looked upon her with favor and said He had chosen her to be the Mother of His son? For a moment Mary was frightened when the angel said “Hail Mary…” and wondered what kind of gree ng this was. A er being told why God sent His angel, Mary said, “be it done to me…” At that very moment, Mary received into her body the Body and Blood of Jesus; mankind’s first Holy Communion. This is what you will be doing; receiving your very First Holy Communion. You and Mary, our moth-er in heaven, are joined together in a very special way. Al-ways remember that each me that you receive the Holy Eucharist. As I recounted what I had told my granddaughter, I thought how casually at mes (I and others I’ve no ced), we go forward at Mass without the thought of our connec-

on to our holy mother and the Eucharis c feast. I hope my li le story to my granddaughter may bring meaning to oth-ers. She received her first Communion, for us older folks-it may very well be our last. ~~A contribu on from our parish-ioner John Raymond

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT

In today’s second reading, Saint Paul prays with joy and confidence for his friends in the Chris an community at Philippi. He is encouraged that the community has part-nered with him to proclaim the Gospel. He sees Christ’s ac ve presence and plan of salva on at work in the com-munity. God’s overarching plan is unclear to us. But when we see evidence of God working through others, doesn’t it give us reason to hope that Christ is alive among us? Does the witness of others help our own prayer lives? Does it inspire us to be partners with others in promo ng the Gospel? Food for thought in this second week of Advent.

SUICIDIO ASISTIDO
