Happy Easter! We celebrate this whole week of 8 days (an “octave”) after Easter as if it were a week of Easter Sundays. Again, may we experience new life in our Lord Jesus throughout this whole Easter Season 2016.

Please join in a Year of Mercy event this afternoon, April 3rd, starting at 2:30 until 4:00 p.m. at St. Benedict Church, followed by food and fellowship in the social hall. These Divine Mercy Sunday devotions will include a procession with the new Divine Mercy picture, praying the Divine Mercy Chaplet, readings from St. Faustina’s diary, confessions and Benediction. All are welcome!

We’re now less than two weeks away from one of the keystones of our observance of this Year of Mercy as a parish, the professional drama planned for Friday, April 15th, at 7:00 p.m. in our St. Benedict Athletics and Events Center (i.e. our gym!). We are hosting a drama by St. Luke Productions entitled, Faustina: Messenger of Divine Mercy. Please invite family and friends to this event, noting that this multimedia drama will have some scenes that might be frightening for children under 13. You can see a trailer for this drama at our parish website: www.christourlightparish.com.

I’d like to offer continued thanks to all who made this year’s Easter celebrations so beautiful both at St. Benedict and Sts. Peter & Paul. This includes choirs and all music ministers, church decorators, servers, readers, ushers and all. Thankfully having the four Easter Sunday Masses as well as the Easter Vigil Mass seems to have helped alleviate some of the overcrowding of years past.

May the Lord help us to continue journeying together ever more joyfully, especially throughout this Easter Season 2016, always ready for the gift of eternal life.

Pastor’s Letter

Throughout the Easter season, we look to the resurrection of our Savior and our new life as Christians in the coming days. We celebrated the new life through baptism of two students, Mason and Ava Betts, at our school Mass on Thursday. Tate Sikora, a kindergartner, was also baptized at the Easter Vigil Mass. We are surrounded by new life in our hearts and in all of creation.

Kindergarten Screening took place on April 1. If you are interested in registering your child for the 2016-2017school year, please call the school to schedule an appointment: 740-432-6751. Registration is ongoing through the end of the school year. We will celebrate Catholic Schools Week April 11-15. Bishop Monforton will visit the school on Wednesday, April 13. He will celebrate Mass at 1:45 p.m. Please join us! We will also hold a Spelling Bee, Mass Partner Bingo and Crazy Hat & Sock Day on Friday! Classes will visit local businesses throughout the community as well.

St. Benedict Tumbler Sale: Our 6th and 7th grade students are holding a few fundraisers to raise money for their 2017 Washington, D.C. trip. Tumblers will be sold for $16 from April 1-19. There is a special St. Benedict Leps tumbler that will be available, in addition to a variety of sports teams and other choices. These can be purchased in the school office, from any 6th or 7th grade student, and after Mass over the coming weekends. Questions? Contact Holly Marsh at the school.

Schwan’s Food Fundraiser: An additional fundraiser for our Washington, D.C. trip: Starting Monday, April 4, Schwan’s Foods will donate 20% of product purchases and 40% of e-card sales back to our organization through May 19. Schwan’s offers over 350 delicious frozen foods — with many healthy options — conveniently delivered directly to your door. Simply order online at www.schwans-cares.com/26721 and click “shop to give” or order by phone 1-855-870-7208 and provide our campaign ID 26721. A flyer will be available next week-end. Have dinner ready on those busy weeknights and support our students at the same time! Any questions please contact Susan Wright at 740-680-2876. Thank you! Blessings, Jane Rush

The Chalkboard

Likewise, by way of reminder, we’re planning the first junior high youth group gathering this afternoon, April 3rd, at 5:00 p.m. in the Marian Room. It will be both an opportunity to start forming a youth group and an opportunity for some food and fun. It’s open to students currently in 5th through 8th grade.

GATHERING

Page 6: 2nd Sunday of Easter (Divine Mercy Sunday)...BAPTISMS: Please contact the parish office to schedule baptismal instructions and date. MINISTRY TO HOME-BOUND AND THOSE IN NURSING HOMES

As followers of Jesus Christ, we are called to care for one another with Christian love and compassion. Gathered in Christ’s name, let us seek the Lord’s mercy for the times we have not acted with love.

The focus of the readings is the mission of the Church. In the readings from Acts, the apostles are persecuted for preach-ing about Jesus and they respond by preaching even to their persecutors.

The gospel tells us that at the word of Jesus the disciples caught so many fish they could hardly bring them in. All of this is in the context of the Church (the boat__the bark of Peter). We

see in this reading reference to the Eucharist: the bread which they shared and the mis-sion of Peter to “feed my sheep.”

Acts of the Apostles 5:27-32, 40b-41We are witnesses of these things, as is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him.- How do I witness Jesus as the source of strength in my life?

Revelation 5:11-14To the One who sits on the throne and the Lamb be blessing and honor, glory and might, forever and ever.- How faithful are you in giving glory and might to the Lamb in your life and work?

John 21:1-19Simon, son of John, do you love me?- How have I witnessed God’s selfless love in my relationships?

READINGS FOR THE THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER April 10, 2016

For the Sundays in the Easter Season, our Gospel Readings are drawn from the Gospel of John. The 4th Sunday of Easter is typically observed as Good Shepherd Sunday, drawn from the 10th Chapter of the Gospel of John. And, on the 6th Sunday of Easter more recently in the Diocese of Steubenville we have been observing the Feast of the Ascension. In Year C, the 3rd and the 5th Sundays of Easter give us two Sundays to consider the theme of the love of God. They give us the opportunity to consider sacrificial love in the light of the Resurrection.

Next Sunday, the 3rd Sunday of Easter, we will read about the encounter between Jesus and the Apostles on the Sea of Galilee (a.k.a. the Sea of Tiberias), again, after the Resurrection.

In the first part of this passage is the miraculous catch of fish. St. John notes that there were 153 fish in the net. Surprisingly, he also notes, the net was not torn, in spite of this enormous catch of fish. This can be seen as the passage in the Gospel of John where they experience Jesus showing and reinforcing to them, in signs rather than in words, that they would be “fishers of men.” St. Jerome, a biblical scholar who lived from 347 to 420 A.D., noted the 153 fish as the known number of species

of fish at that time. So, this could be Jesus telling the Apostles that the Gospel message will reach all peoples in the world.

Then, once the Apostles were back on the shore, Jesus invited them to enjoy the breakfast of roasted fish and bread that he had prepared for them. This became the context for Jesus to show tremendous mercy to St. Peter. As St. Peter had denied Jesus three times as he had gathered around a fire to stay warm after Jesus had been arrested, now near this fire St. Peter is given the opportunity to express his love for Jesus three times.

It is fitting to have this passage in the Year of Mercy, immediately following Divine Mercy Sunday. On Divine Mercy Sunday we read of Jesus being merciful to St. Thomas who found it difficult to trust the words of the other disciples about the Resurrection of Jesus. Ultimately, he was given the opportunity to place his hands into Jesus’ side and hands and to encounter the wounds of Jesus. Next Sunday, on the 3rd Sunday of Easter, St. Peter is given the opportunity to renew his love for Jesus.

One additional thing to note in next Sunday’s Gospel is that Jesus meets St. Peter where he is in his love for

Jesus. In the Greek language at that time there were several words that could be used for love. Jesus initially asks St. Peter if he loved him, using the word “agape.” St. Peter responded by using the word “philos,” a brotherly love. On the third time, Jesus uses “philos” as well.

May we see in next Sunday’s Gospel that God both loves us and shows us mercy where we are, but also then sends us out to be instruments of that mercy to all peoples. May we experience Jesus’ personal love for each of us and his personal call and plan for each of us as well.
