Election Day is right around the corner. As we prepare, I often reflect on how thankful I am to each and every poll worker and our community partners who assist in keeping “democracy” alive and well in Levy County. Many thanks for all you do!

With the presidential contest in play, the Elections office is preparing for an overall 80% turnout in November. In addition to the President of the United States, your Congressional, Senate, judicial retention and 4 constitutional amendments will be included on your ballot. You will not see any county races on your ballot as they were decided in the August Primary Election.

Election Reminders:

☆ Click on the “Check My Voter Status” tab at www.votelevy.com to check your individual voter status. This is the best way to check your record to ensure all information is up to date.

☆ If you have moved recently, please update your address online under “What’s New.” Click on “Need to Change Address” and fill in the required information. You may call 352-486-5163 or visit the Elections office at 421 S. Court St., Bronson.

☆ Keep your signature up to date. You can download the form from the website, update your signature and hand-deliver or mail it to the Elections office.

☆ Remember: A vote by mail ballot counts the same as one cast at your precinct - as long as it arrives at the Elections office by 7 p.m. Election Day. You no longer need to cite a reason to receive one. Simply contact the Elections office and request a ballot, which is mailed approximately a month before the election. You can track your ballot at www.VoteLevy.com, to find out when it is received.

Rights of Electricity ConsumersRegarding Solar Energy ChoiceThis amendment establishes a right underFlorida's constitution for consumers to own orlease solar equipment installed on theirproperty to generate electricity for their ownuse. State and local governments shall retaintheir abilities to protect consumer rights andpublic health, safety and welfare, and toensure that consumers who do not choose toinstall solar are not required to subsidize thecosts of backup power and electric gridaccess to those who do.The amendment is not expected to result inan increase or decrease in any revenues orcosts to state and local government.

ARTICLE X, SECTION 29

Use of Marijuana for Debilitating MedicalConditionsAllows medical use of marijuana forindividuals with debilitating medical conditionsas determined by a licensed Floridaphysician. Allows caregivers to assistpatients’ medical use of marijuana. TheDepartment of Health shall register andregulate centers that produce and distributemarijuana for medical purposes and shallissue identification cards to patients andcaregivers. Applies only to Florida law. Doesnot immunize violations of federal law or anynon-medical use, possession or production ofmarijuana.Increased costs from this amendment to stateand local governments cannot bedetermined. There will be additionalregulatory costs and enforcement activitiesassociated with the production, sale, use andpossession of medical marijuana. Fees mayoffset some of the regulatory costs. Sales taxwill likely apply to most purchases, resultingin a substantial increase in state and localgovernment revenues that cannot bedetermined precisely. The impact on propertytax revenues cannot be determined.

Tax Exemption for Totally andPermanently Disabled First RespondersProposing an amendment to the StateConstitution to authorize a first responder,who is totally and permanently disabled as aresult of injuries sustained in the line of duty,to receive relief from ad valorem taxesassessed on homestead property, ifauthorized by general law. If approved byvoters, the amendment takes effect January1, 2017.

Homestead Tax Exemption for CertainSenior, Low-Income, Long-TermResidents; Determination of Just ValueProposing an amendment to the StateConstitution to revise the homestead taxexemption that may be granted by counties ormunicipalities for property with just value lessthan $250,000 owned by certain senior,low-income, long-term residents to specifythat just value is determined in the first taxyear the owner applies and is eligible for theexemption. The amendment takes effectJanuary 1, 2017, and applies retroactively toexemptions granted before January 1, 2017.
