KIND KINDERGARTEN

Greetings all! Our Kindergarten students are off to an amazing start. We have covered numerous topics so far and have many more to go. In Math, students have learned geometry and numbers 0-5. Students are currently learning numbers 6-10 and will continue learning their numbers beyond 10. In Reading, students are learning concepts of print, rhyming words, recognizing beginning sounds, and identifying high frequency words. They are also learning high frequency words, words families, and sentence formation. Students are learning that we grow and change over time; they have created a timeline to show their understanding of chronology and will bring their final projects home to share with you soon. In Science, students are learning about matter and how it changes. They are able to identify solids, liquids and gases, and can explain how matter can change forms. We have been conducting experiments and will continue to do so throughout the school year. In November, we will travel to Parker Playhouse for a fantastic educational show. Thank you to all the parents who have been volunteering at our school and in our classrooms. #ALLIN: Ms. Keppel, Ms. Jenkins, Ms. Lannaman, Ms. Samuels, Ms. Williams

Preschool Corner Greetings! It is with extreme pleasure that we welcome all Pre-K families to Outstanding Oriole Elementary School! Here at Oriole, we have three unique and dynamic Pre-K Programs: Head Start (Ms. Thieshia Cox), Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten/VPK (Ms. Nanette Littles), and ESE Specialized Preschool (Ms. Lucius-Robinson). Pre-K curriculum is more than just reading, writing and math skills. We also teach important life skills such as character traits, social skills, and growth and developmental skills. As always, if we can be of support to you and your family, please contact your child’s teacher. Here’s to a terrific school year! #ALLIN

FUN 1st GRADE In 1st grade students are learning how to read. Currently, our reading focus is to identify the character, setting, problem, and solution in a story. As you read with your child help him or her know that the characters are the people, animal, or things in the story. Setting is where and when the story takes place. The problem is a conflict that needs to be solved and solution is how the problem is solved. Learning these skills will be very helpful as we begin our Accelerated Reader Program. This program allows students to read a variety of self-selected books and take a comprehension test on each book they read. Students who score well on these comprehension assessments will be recognized and rewarded! In Math, students are adding and subtracting within 20 demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction. For example: 10 + 2 = 12; 12 – 2= 10. To motivate students to develop math fluency, we have begun our school-wide Math Frenzy Fluency Drills. Winners for each drill will be recognized each Friday so please encourage your child to practice and build his/her fluency in addition and subtraction. In Science, we continue to think like scientists and raise questions about our world. Social Studies takes us to considering American Symbols and what they mean to us. We suggest that as you move about our city with your child, please point out some of our American symbols. Keep reading our newsletters for more information on how we can work together to accelerate your child’s progress. -- Ms. Greenaway, Ms. Daniel, Ms. Green, Ms. Cintron, Ms. Haye -

SENSATIONAL 2nd GRADE

Greetings Parent(s) and Guardian(s), We want to start off by saying, “Thanks for the opportunity to educate your child(ren)”. At Outstanding Oriole, it is our goal to educate every student and provide him/her with the skills and strategies needed to become a successful citizen! Students are currently learning and applying the reading skill of determining the Author’s Main Purpose(s) for writing a story, text, or partial article. On October 19th, students will be embarking on a field trip to Parker Playhouse to see the stage play, “Click-Clack-Moo, Cows That Type!” It’s a story and play your child(ren) will be sure to remember for a lifetime. Additionally, students are learning about place value, forms of numbers, and names for numbers, even as they learn how to write friendly letters. As this first-quarter comes to an end, please continue to be active in your child’s educational journey by ensuring reads for at least 30 minutes and complete their homework every night. Warm Regards, Ms. Curtis (Cool), Ms. Coletti (Calm), Ms. Griffiths (Great) Ms. Feurtado (Friendly ), Mr. Jones (Joyful), Ms. Miller (Merry)

TERRIFIC 3rd Grade Greetings Oriole Family,

It is with great joy that our Terrific Third Grade Team informs you on how well our students are blazing

the trail to success! Our Character Trait for the month of October is Responsibility. With that said, we are assisting our students with transitioning from the primary grades and becoming more responsible citizens by taking ownership. We are planning and preparing lessons that are aligned with the Florida State Standards. We are teaching with a multitude of passion, enthusiasm, and fidelity. As we pour our hearts out to your children, we ask in return that they arrive to school on time, come with their completed homework, and be ready to learn everyday.

Our students just learned about Literary and Nonliterary Texts. They have also learned how to interpret and organize data by using Picture Graphs and Bar Graphs. Currently, students are working on comparing and contrasting characters, settings, and plots within various texts. They are also learning how to write an addition sentence and multiplication sentence for a model. On another note, the terrific Third Grade Team and students will travel to Parker Playhouse for our first field trip to see, Little Monster Tales. Remember, you can join us on our field trips by completing a volunteer application at http://browardschools.com/getinvolved.

Lastly, we look forward to partnering with you as we journey through the 2015-2016 school year with a focused determination to succeed. We believe at Oriole that “Learning is the ONLY option!” -- Ms. Coleman, Ms. Hunter, Ms. Smith, Ms. Watkins, Ms. Williams

FABULOUS 4th Grade

Greetings Oriole Family, Fourth grade students have examined the weather and hurricanes; learned about the role of a scientist; practiced place value, rounding, expanded notation; and are currently learning interesting facts about Florida. Students have also been using their multiplication skills to solve math problems and are expected to know their multiplication facts fluently by the end of the school year. Please provide opportunities for your child to practice multiplication facts in meaningful ways through writing, memorizing, adding multiples, and counting. Fluency is a hallmark of a proficient reader. Students become fluent in reading when they are given the opportunity to read each day. Please set aside a specific time each day where you and your child can share reading time together. Fourth grade students are given a minimum of forty minutes of homework each night. Please review your child’s agenda to ensure they are completing their homework in a timely manner and help them remember to bring their completed homework to school everyday. We are excited about our upcoming field trip to the Amatura Theater on November 13th to learn about Sacagawea’s role in the Lewis and Clark’s Expedition and her many contributions. Please ensure that all Field Trip Forms are completely filled out and returned to your child’s teacher in a timely manner. As a reminder, only those students who have turned in their completed Field Trip Forms prior to date of the field trip, will be able to participate in the field trip experience. We have set aside October 28th, as one of our Open Parent-Teacher Conference days and look forward to seeing you between the hours of 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on that day. In addition, we are available for early morning conferences if those times are more convenience for you to meet with your child’s teacher. Thank you for entrusting us with the care and education of your child(ren). We look forward to having a wonderful year filled with learning, excitement, and many rewards. --Ms. Chambers, Ms.LaVette, Ms. Nolan, Ms. Reid, Ms. Stewart
