38 I BALLWIN DAYS I May 24, 2017WEST NEWSMAGAZINE
@WESTNEWSMAGWESTNEWSMAGAZINE.COM
Ballwin Days never fails to pack a musical punch. At this year’s festival, get ready to rock, ride and roll with a series of great entertainment acts.
Local rock band Queens Blvd. kicks things off on the Main Stage on Friday, June 9 from 7-11 p.m. This energetic outfit brings their trade-mark youthful swagger to the 1980’s hit parade.
Audience members will be livin’ on a prayer with this high-octane show that brings back the best of Def Leppard, Guns ‘N Roses and Bon Jovi. Tease that hair and bust out the stonewashed denim and shoulder pads – the eighties are back in a big way with Queens Blvd.
On Saturday, June 10, the rock keeps rolling with Night Moves from Kalamazoo, Mich. They pay tribute to the great Bob Seger right down to the look and sound of lead singer Jack “Mandu” Parkhurst, who once fronted Seger’s Silver Bullet Band.
Let the “Old Time Rock and Roll” take you back to cruisin’ down “Mainstreet” inside the “Nutbush City Limits” with “Betty Lou.” Night Moves reminds you of
“Fire Lake” because “Rock and Roll Never Forgets,” even as you “Turn the Page” on the “Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man” and the “Beautiful Loser.”
The tunes wrap up on Sunday, June 11 from 2-5 p.m. in the Beer Garden with country singer Matt Kennon. This Atlanta native knows the power of music and can move you to tears.
Kennon has shared the stage with many of today’s top artists, including Kenny Chesney, Blake Shelton, Train, Darius Rucker, Uncle Kracker, Lee Brice and The
Band Perry. His songs, including “The Call”
and “You Had to Pick on Me,” carry emotional messages that hit home with people struggling with issues like suicide, post-traumatic stress and bullying. Kennon has devoted the last few years to developing a special anti-bullying program that has appeared in 83 schools in seven states.
Don’t miss any of the great music at the 2017 Ballwin Days festival.

Ballwin Days 2017 marks the 37th anniversary of the festival’s Pretty Baby Contest, an event where area babies have helped raise over $75,000 for SSM Car-dinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center over the years. Help make this a record-breaking year for Babies Helping Kids!
Since the first contest in 1981, over 2,000 babies have been entered for Pretty Baby honors. A photo of each contestant will be on display in the Pretty Baby tent where family, friends and festival-goers can cast their monetary votes.
Each cent donated counts as one vote, and special prizes are awarded to the four babies with the most votes at the final cere-mony on June 11. Cash or check donations are accepted. All proceeds go to Cardinal Glennon. For details and entry instructions, visit www.ballwindays.com or email [email protected]. The contest is open to all children age 3 years and under. Photo entries must be received by June 3.
K9s in Flight, the premiere canine sports show, is back in action at Ballwin Days 2017 featuring a lineup of all rescue dogs.
The world-class show features exciting diving tricks and acrobatic flying disc rou-tines set to music.
Watch dogs jump as far as 25 feet off a dock into a 15,000-gallon swimming pool to catch a toy, or jump as high as 10 feet in the air, to catch a thrown disc.
K9s in Flight’s motto is “Adopt a dog, save a life!”

Celebration to honor, raise money for BackStoppers, Inc.
The Ballwin Days Parade, a festival favorite since 1978, celebrates 40 years of memories on Saturday, June 10, with the theme of “40 Years and Going Strong.”
The parade rolls out at 9 a.m. on Steam-boat Lane adjacent to The Rock Church in Ballwin [formerly Ballwin Baptist Church]. It proceeds north to Kehrs Mill Road then turns east into Vlasis Park. The parade ends on Park Drive near the Ballwin police station.
Watch for the special parade marshals, who have made Ballwin Days the great
festival it is today! Parking for parade viewing is available on the east side of the Target parking lot. For more information, visit www.ballwindays.com/parade.html.
The second annual Ballwin Days Pan-cake Breakfast will be on Saturday morn-ing from 7-11 a.m. at Salem in Ballwin United Methodist Church. Proceeds benefit the Boy Scouts. Tickets may be purchased at the door on Saturday morning. Stop by before or after the parade to enjoy a great breakfast for a great cause.
Celebrate 40 years of memories at Ballwin Days parade
On July 8, 2016, the Ballwin com-munity was impacted by the catastrophic injury sustained by Ballwin Police Offi-cer Michael Flamion, while conducting a traffic stop on New Ballwin Road. In the aftermath of that incident, BackStoppers, Inc. was there to provide financial support to the Flamion family.
BackStoppers, Inc. was started in 1959. Today, the nonprofit organization serves a total of 13 counties in Missouri and five counties in Illinois. Since its incep-tion, it has taken care of 160 families of first responders, including providing cata-strophic injury relief.
Currently, BackStoppers, Inc. is caring for 81 families with 66 dependent children, equating to a total annual financial com-mitment of approximately $1.3 million.
BackStoppers, Inc. was here for Ballwin when one of the city’s finest needed the organization’s support. Now, the Ballwin Days committee wants to recognize and support the organization’s efforts.
On Friday, June 9 and Saturday, June 10, Ballwin Days will honor BackStoppers,
Inc. for its dedication to first responders in the St. Louis region.
There will be one ceremony each night, commencing at approximately 8:45 p.m., just prior to the fireworks display. In addition to BackStoppers, Inc., Ballwin Days also will be recognizing and salut-ing local first responders along with the Ballwin VFW and the Army National Guard.
Festival-goers are encouraged to stop by the BackStoppers, Inc. booth on the fair-grounds during Ballwin Days to learn more about the organization and to say “thanks.”

@WESTNEWSMAGWESTNEWSMAGAZINE.COM
Each year, the Ballwin Days committee honors a senior citizen for contributing to the city and making the com-munity a better place in which to live. This year, the Ballwin Days committee has selected two very special individuals to receive this award – Donald Mertz and Harold “Skip” Schrader.
Donald Mertz, 84, is a life-long resident of Ballwin. He grew up near Baxter and Clay-ton roads, at what used to be known as “Stringtown.” Don served our country in the Army at the end of the Korean War. In 1957, he married his wife, Alice, at Holy Infant church, where he still is a member. The couple has six children.
Don has volunteered with the American Legion for 40 years and served on the city’s Board of Adjustment for 35 years. In addi-tion, Don has served as a member of the Ballwin Athletic Association Board and helped with the Ballwin Historical Society and Meals on Wheels. He coached Khoury League for both boys and girls for 15 years. With all six of his children playing ball, Don spent many nights helping Ballwin ball players improve their skills. He also helped out with Cub Scouts at Woerther Elementary when his children were young.
Harold “Skip” Schrader is 90 years old
and also has lived in Ballwin all of his life. He and his wife, Daisy, have four children
and attend St. John’s United Church of Christ.
Skip said he remembers Ball-win as a farming community with a population of a mere 300 residents and recalls people coming to Schrader Funeral Home by horse-drawn wagons, when Manchester Road was a two-lane gravel road. Skip began working at the funeral home in 1952 and is currently its president.
Skip attended Old Ballwin School, 308 Jefferson St., and still gets together once a year with his fellow classmates.
Don was a Merchant Mariner for two years and served our country in the Army during the Korean War. Through the years, he has supported many athletic teams in Ballwin including Khoury League teams, since the league’s inception. He also has been a member of the Bonhomme Lions for over 50 years.
The city of Ballwin is very lucky to have such special senior citizens that have made such a difference in the community, help-ing to make it a great place in which to work, play and live.
Congratulations to both Skip Schrader and Don Mertz, Ballwin’s Outstanding Seniors for 2017.
