Softbank Mobile turned to Nokia Siemens Networks to help it achieve its goal of lowering power consumption as well as to stay green while remaining nimble with its operating costs. In Japan, the telco operates 50,000 base stations.

Built around our award-winning Flexi BTS unit – by far the most energy efficient base station unit on the market today – the Green Radio solution chosen by Softbank is helping reduce overall network power consumption by a staggering 60%.

Softbank was attracted to the low initial capital site investment needed with the Flexi BTS as well as the ability to accommodate high traffic simply via a software migration, rather than through the installation of more hardware.

The portability of the Flexi BTS also means that Softbank Mobile can deploy the base station anywhere in densely-populated Japan, where land space is at a premium. This has resulted in easier negotiations with various landowners enabling the CSP to save up to 40% on site rental costs.

“We have built up this relationship of trust with Nokia Siemens Networks, and it is our goal to offer good services that are competitively priced. Going one step further, together, we could show the industry the future in three to five years’ time. With this as our mutual interest, Softbank Mobile wishes to continue to work further with Nokia Siemens Networks.”

Eager to connect with customers beyond city limits and take its 3G performance promise nationwide, Elisa Corporation chose the Nokia Siemens Networks WCDMA 900 solution.

Many CSPs have invested in 900 and 850 MHz frequency bands, utilizing them to offer GSM services. Now regulators have begun to open these frequency bands for WCDMA use. WCDMA refarming provides an opportunity to improve service experience for indoor users of 3G services in a cost-efficient way, since the lower transmission frequencies require fewer base stations and penetrate interiors better than the higher frequencies traditionally used for WCDMA.

The solution is also a highly efficient way to reach new users by extending 3G services to sparsely populated areas. The solution provides the following benefits:

• Wider coverage (for rural users) • Better broadband quality

(for urban users) • HSPA 900 allows operators to provide

broadband services from the GSM 900 base station grid (reduced need to rent or build new sites)

• Unified management system for GSM and WCDMA networks reduces costs and improves service quality

A further benefit of the Nokia Siemens Networks solution is its condensed carrier spacing. Advanced filtering enables 3G to run in 4.2 MHz of frequency instead of the conventional 5 MHz. This leaves room for GSM voice to run at full rate on the same band instead of half rate, thus preserving the highest speech quality for 2G users.

“Thanks to Nokia Siemens Networks’ Frequency Refarming solution, we are now running WCDMA and GSM efficiently in our 900 MHz frequency allocation, enabling us to extend our 3G services cost-effectively from cities to the less populated areas of Finland.”

Veli-Matti Mattila, President and CEO, Elisa Corporation

The largest annual pilgrimage in the world brings about three million people to the city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia. Known as the Hajj, the event is one of the most important in the Islamic calendar. The number of visitors is increasing every year, and, along with it, the pressure on the mobile network in the five kilometers square area.

In just one week, pilgrims during a recent Hajj made 450 million calls and sent one billion SMS messages. During peak hours, traffic touches a phenomenal two million erlangs. This surge puts extraordinary demands on national operator Saudi Telecoms Company (STC).

Since 2001, Nokia Siemens Networks has been the sole GSM and 3G supplier to STC during the Hajj. When the pilgrimage is over, 90% of the network is drawn down, and has to be put back up again the following year. The temporary nature of the Hajj adds one more dimension of complexity to an already difficult challenge.

“Maintaining the quality of calls while ensuring visiting pilgrims stay connected has never been an easy task, but it is one that we have been able to fulfil with the support of Nokia Siemens Networks for close to a decade now.”

With the increasing adoption of broadband data services at rapidly declining tariffs, mobile operators face the challenge of providing additional capacity within their transport networks at optimized costs to maintain profitability.

That’s why, when Chunghwa Telecom, the largest telecommunications operator in Taiwan with 95% market share in the fixed and close to 40% market share in the mobile market, decided to provide enhanced, industry-leading 3G and HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) services to its subscribers, they contracted Nokia Siemens Networks to roll out a Hybrid Backhaul solution.

The hybrid network optimizes Chunghwa Telecom’s existing assets. It transports high-value voice services over E1 lines, with packet transport being used for data services. This makes it feasible for Chunghwa to provide the high capacity that bandwidth-hungry data services need – especially because WCDMA operators offer flat fee for unlimited data access, usage patterns can escalate dramatically. In such a situation, optimizing existing assets significantly lowers OPEX costs.

“The expansion of our portfolio to include wireless broadband services was an important milestone for Chunghwa Telecom and one that we successfully achieved with the support of Nokia Siemens Networks.”

Jen-Hon Lin, President, Mobile Business Group, Chunghwa Telecom

Zain Bahrain is part of the Zain Group, the pioneer of mobile telecommunications in the Middle East and now a major player on the African continent.

To maintain its profile as an innovator in its market, Zain Bahrain wanted to implement immediate service improvements. But it also wanted to future-proof its network, so that service innovations could continue to be phased in, without further costly investment in infrastructure.

Working in partnership with Nokia Siemens Networks, both aims were achieved by making an early strategic transition to an all-IP, flat architecture. Since the implementation of Nokia Siemens Networks’ unique Internet High Speed Packet Access (I-HSPA) architecture, one of the first improvements has been an increase in mobile Internet access speeds and network throughput.

However, in the longer term, Zain customers can look forward to a real ‘click-bang’ Internet experience, thanks to the introduction of LTE over the revamped network, which will reduce latency to between 10 and 20 ms.

This will be made possible by the ability of the award-winning Nokia Siemens Networks Flexi Multiradio Base Station to evolve from WCDMA/HSPA and I-HSPA to LTE via a software upgrade, rather than hardware changes. This, in turn, safeguards the future of Zain’s initial capital investment.

“In today’s business, you have to pre-empt what consumers want. In the mobile broadband era we need a scalable and versatile platform. Nokia Siemens Networks is providing us with Flexi Base Station, I-HSPA flat architecture, Evolved Packet Core and software upgrade to LTE that answers our needs.”

When the Chinese government awarded 3G licenses in early 2009, JLMCC was keen to build on its dominant market position by being as early as possible in launching 3G services. Fast time- to-market was critical.

With time pressing, JLMCC chose Nokia Siemens Networks to replace its existing HLRs. As well as our commitment to a rapid installation, a key factor in JLMCC’s decision to engage Nokia Siemens Networks was our strong local presence, together with a high level of expertise in swapping out HLRs, gained from a large number of projects globally.

The solution involved swapping out JLMCC’s existing HLRs for 10 Nokia Siemens Networks HLRs located in four cities, all of which provide service to both 2G and 3G users. A new server was also supplied to provide redundancy for the main HLRs.

The solution also enables JLMCC to keep one of its most important customer promises – that subscribers would not have to change their SIM or phone number to enjoy the benefits of 3G and would only require a new handset. The Nokia Siemens Networks HLRs ensured that JLMCC could meet this commitment.

“Thanks to prompt support, deep expertise and highly reliable solutions from Nokia Siemens Networks, Jilin MCC has been able to launch into the critical 3G market with a highly stable platform that will support our future growth.”

MTN Syria has upgraded its core network with the latest softswitching technology. This includes the Nokia Siemens Networks Net ActTM network/service management solution as part of the company’s drive towards an All-IP network.

The first objective of the upgrade was to swap the legacy core for new technology to reduce core network elements and hence reduce operational expenses. The second objective was to have better support through a consolidated service level agreement with the provider chosen. The final objective was to have one operational team managing this network instead of requiring several sets of expertise for different core network vendors.

Since the market was moving rapidly towards IP technology, the company decided to renovate all its core switches, moving from a legacy into a state- of-the-art R4 layer architecture network connected to the IP backbone and thus taking a major step towards an All-IP network.

“Operators today are looking for real partnership with not only a supplier or equipment provider – they are looking into a technology partner who can give a full turnkey managed solution. MTN Syria is looking to focus on the core business activity of an operator and to outsource the non-core activities to a partner who can do the full managed services of the network. We selected Nokia Siemens Networks because of their advancement and excellence.”

With its high-speed wireless network covering 94% of the population, 3 Austria has quickly established itself as a disruptive force in a market where mobile and fixed broadband penetration is relatively low. Using Nokia Siemens Networks’ pioneering Direct Tunnel technology, the operator has cost-efficiently increased its core network capacity ten-fold in order to maintain its double-digit data revenue growth rate.

The main benefit of the Nokia Siemens Networks Direct Tunnel solution is that it facilitates data traffic handling in the core network and thus ensures that data delivery costs are optimized. To optimize network data delivery costs, Direct Tunnel functionality separates the control and user plane traffic.

The business benefits of the Direct Tunnel solution are dramatic. Not only does it provide an immediate ten-fold increase in data traffic capacity, but it also saves around 30% of the projected capital costs of a hardware based multi-SGSN approach.

“With their Direct Tunnel technology, Nokia Siemens Networks offered exactly what we needed to overcome the bottleneck in our data network. Now we can handle all the traffic our customers are generating and more, and we have a real strategic advantage over our competitors.”

StarHub is one of three major CSPs in technologically sophisticated Singapore. On the mobile broadband front, it has been phenomenally successful in the last few years, growing at 200% to 300% annually. Although it expects growth to continue at 200% in the coming year, the company knows it has to stay on its toes to maintain a leadership position in mobile broadband and satisfy an ever-more demanding customer.

In order to handle the current and future demand for mobile data traffic more efficiently, the CSP engaged Nokia Siemens Networks, a communications network solutions partner from the company’s inception, to modernize its 2G/3G converged core network.

In addition to the 3G core expansion to 21 Mbps data speeds with HSPA+, StarHub also flattened its network architecture with Direct Tunnel, an innovative, enhanced functionality in 3G networks pioneered by Nokia Siemens Networks that enables operators to simplify their mobile packet data networks. With Direct Tunnel, user data traffic is routed directly from the radio access network to the core network’s Internet gateway node, bypassing the control node (the SGSN) through which data traffic is routed in existing networks..

“Nokia Siemens Networks helped us get our break by providing a very fast implementation, on time and to budget. Everything worked, helping our customers achieve speeds if not at 21 Mbps, very close to 21 Mbps. Everything went smoothly with no impact at all [during implementation phase] to our customers.”

As one of the three major players in mobile network provision in Indonesia, Excelcomindo Pratama (XL) has to continually strive to differentiate itself while retaining market share. The company had focused on growing its infrastructure and competing on price in the past few years, but underwent a strategic change in 2008 as market conditions evolved.

“Our focus this year is on ‘quality improvement’,” explained Dian Siswarini, Network Director, XL. “We are focusing on network quality now that we have sufficient coverage and capacity.”

The company turned to Nokia Siemens Networks to optimize its network infrastructure, which was supplied by a major competitor, in order to maintain customer satisfaction.

The project helped XL raise the bar with key performance indicators (KPIs): soft handover success rate was improved by more than 80% and its circuit switched traffic rate was increased by 150%. XL had previously worked with Nokia Siemens Networks on a service quality optimization project in Bandung, so it was familiar with the stellar results that Nokia Siemens Networks could achieve. At Bandung, XL had also enjoyed significant improvements in KPIs such as daily dropped call rates and handover success rates.

“While all vendors will claim they are the best, the proof is in the pudding. From our own experience, Nokia Siemens Networks delivers the best results close to a decade now.”

Smart Communications is the Philippines’ leading mobile CSP, with more than 35 million subscribers. The CSP is known as an innovative telco as it pioneered many 3G services, such as e-wallet and mobile e-commerce. Staying at the top of the game, however, is no easy feat in the ever-changing consumer market. To retain its leadership position, the CSP aims to make mobile internet available to every Filipino.

To fulfill its vision, Smart contracted Nokia Siemens Networks to upgrade its infrastructure to a High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) network in 2008 so that it can deliver even more compelling mobile internet services to its subscribers, which will also bring the customer experience of the Smart brand to the next level.

This is vital as Smart’s strategy for business success is to retain and grow its subscriber base by being the first in the market with new and innovative services. For instance, the operator is already highly popular among the lower average revenue per user (ARPU) subscribers.

With the HSDPA network in place, Smart will be able to penetrate new accounts and stay ahead of the competition.

“There is huge strategic value in partnering with Nokia Siemens Networks. Their contribution is in helping us to better understand the consumers. And we can leverage their global experience and combine that with our local knowledge to deliver more innovative services to Filipinos.”
