(continued from page 1) unravelling the complexities of the written text and instilling in his congregation a passion for the Word (Confessions 6.3.4). Augustine says of Ambrose that he could “draw aside the veil of mystery” (Confessions 6.3.5). Ezra and Jesus similarly are praised for their ability to interpret the ancient texts. Such a facility for interpretation is achieved through constant reading and refection, in private study and in communal en-gagement. Ezra is described elsewhere as “a scribe well versed in the Law” (Ezra 7:6). In Luke, Jesus’ authority as the inter-preter of Scriptures is derived from many hours of solitary prayer (Luke 5:16; 6:12; 9:28 11:1). That Ambrose was able to “draw aside the veil of mystery” derived from the time he spent regularly in silent reading and contemplation of the text. Ian J Elmer

Come, Holy Spirit of Pentecost. Come, Holy Spirit of the

great South Land.

O God, bless and unite all your people in Australia and guide us on the pilgrim way of the

Plenary Council.

Give us the grace to see your face in one another and to recognise Jesus,

our companion on the road.

Give us the courage to tell our stories and to speak boldly of your truth.

Give us ears to listen humbly to each other and a discerning heart to hear what

you are saying.

Lead your Church into a hope-filled future, that we may live the joy of the Gospel.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord, bread for the journey from age to age. Amen.
