CHAIRMANS REPORT May I start by thanking Jonathan for his Chairmanship over the last 3 years. The breed has really moved on in this time with UK production proofs and hopefully type proofs just around the corner. I don’t think there is anyone more enthusiastic about the breed than Jonathan and it has been a pleasure to be his Vice Chairman in that time. Kevin Thomas now takes over as Vice Chairman. Kevin has been involved in the breed for years so comes with a wealth of knowledge.

As I write these notes, we have just had notice of the National Showcase at Nantwich being cancelled, which is a great blow as this was a date in the diary that a lot of people looked forward to. Meeting up with old friends and making new ones whilst looking at some great cattle.

De ja vue, the dairy industry seems to have gone full circle again with milk prices crashing faster that the euro. Farmers back on picket lines. I thought we had seen the end of those days but the processors and retailers have just pushed their luck too far judging by the reaction of some militant farmers.

Back in May we had our AGM at Rob Darlington & Emma Bruce’s ‘Moonriver’ herd. This young couple had taken on the tenancy only 11 months earlier and it is testament to their hard work and stockmanship on how well their cows looked with some impressive individuals. Despite the inclement weather a good day was had. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them both for the hard work that they must have put in.

September will see the livestock show at the NEC where the society will be having a stand so come along, have a chat and see some cattle. The World Conference is taking place in Switzerland in December. Having been to Switzerland a few times (too many times according to my wife) I can thoroughly recommend a visit. Top class cattle, lovely people and stunning scenery. Anybody interested should get in touch with Jenni ASAP and we will see if we can organise a trip.

John West

Chairman John West & Vice Chairman Kevin Thomas at the AGM, visiting the Moonriver Herd

OFFICE NEWS The interest in the Brown Swiss breed was vast at the Dairy Event last year, and it was great to be able to say hello to members and new enquirers. We were joined on the stand by Giovanni Carollo from the European Federation in Italy. We hope to see as many members as last year at this Septembers’ newly named Livestock 2012. After a very difficult spring/summer it promises be a much needed celebration of all things dairy, please visit the stand beside the show ring and say hello. It was also good to see members at the AGM this May and to visit the Moonriver herd generously hosted by Rob Darlington and Emma Bruce. Swiss in the News – we want to include your stories, or editorials that have been in the news about the Brown Swiss breed, please see our first two in this edition of the chimes – Swissy, an 18 year old Swiss cross and the McColm family who featured in the Scottish Farmer newspaper. The breed is well known for longevity and we urge all breeders to keep in mind a cow that would fit the criteria for the Longlife Cow competition run by Genus next year. We are also running a Cow of the Year Competition for our members, again, if you have a special cow that for any particular reason you think should be in the running for this award please contact the office with a photograph and reasons for why you believe it is the winner. The council will vote for the winner in a future edition of the Chimes. I also need to comment on the bull attack in Nottinghamshire November before last. The bull killed a man and critically injured his wife. This was a Brown Swiss bull and the council wishes to emphasise that all dairy bulls can be dangerous and must be approached with extreme care, and to remind members that all bulls over 10 months should not be in fields with public footpath access. And a reminder to e-mail me with your current email address so that I can update records to make communication a little quicker and easier – I can also e-mail invoices to save the society postage. Please let me know if you prefer this option. If you have a farm walk, sale, or a business that you think our members would be interested in hearing about, you can contact the office to advertise in the Chimes. Young Breeders – we want to encourage our young people to contribute to the Chimes, if you have a story or a show report or some artwork you would like to send into the office we will see if we can include it in future editions. Lorna McColm our youngest reporter in this journal sent in the Stranraer Show Report - age just 13. Finally, the Society wanted to congratulate Mike & Jayne Edwards on winning the Genus Long Life Cow Competition for the West Region. They are also in the running for the overall supreme long life cow. A truly fabulous achievement for the breed. Cimarron Even Jenny has been featured in this edition of the Chimes. The presentation will take place at the Dairy Event/Livestock2012.

Production Awards are fully automated by the Centre for Dairy Information (CDI) using milk records received from NMR and CIS. Therefore all Society members received awards for their qualifying cows.

From April 1st 2009 Register of Merit, Superior Producer and Lifetime Production Awards will automatically be applied to cattle registered in the Herd Book that meet the qualifying standards. No actual paperwork will be issued. The awards will be entered on the Herd Book system and all subsequent certificates of progeny and re-issued certificates will show an animal's awards.

This service is free to all members.

Elite Cow Award - to qualify for this award a cow must have a minimum of 2 RM awards and 1 SP award together with a VG or EX classification. There is a charge of £5 for Elite Awards.

The Elite Herd, Camarthenshire

The Cimarron ‘Old Girls’ Before I get any wisecracks, this is not referring to me! Instead, it refers to the other women in Mike’s life—and namely, Pauline Jenny, Denise and Belinda.

We are proud to have no less than four 100+ tonne cows in the herd this year—Jenny who is on 126tonnes, Pauline on 120 tonnes and Denise and Belinda who joined the ranks of the ‘elite’ by passing the 100 tonne mark at the end of their latest lactation.

Cimarron Spirit Denise

Classified EX91 3E and an ‘Elite’ cow within the breed, Denise is a second cross daughter of a stock bull that we ran with the heifers many years ago, Garne Aytola Spirit. Her dam unfortunately calved in three quartered and was only fit to suckle calves, so Denise spent the first few months of her life as a suckler calf! She calved in for the first time at 2 years and 1 month and went on to give a very ordinary 5699kg 3.90%F 3.41%P as a heifer. However, she improved year on year so that, by her 5th lactation, she had her highest 305d lactation of 11,016kg 4.28%F 3.45%P. Since then she has maintained a steady10,000kg plus per lactation and is cur-rently dry with her 10th calf, having produced 107tonnes of milk to date. Unfortunately, she has not been a great producer of heifers although she has had one VG87 daughter by Jolt—we’ll just have to keep our fingers crossed for this time.

Cimarron Emerald Belinda

Belinda completed her 100 tonnes in 9 lactations and is now at the beginning of her 10th. Born January 2000, she is a first cross daughter of Lyndale Emory Emerald. Stature wise she is a tiny cow, but boy can she milk! Her first lactation saw her give 9005kg and since then she has had three lactations in excess of 11,000kgs and another two over 10,000kg. She has a respectable average calving interval of 400 days and an average cell count of 131. She has managed to score VG85, despite her diminutive stature, and together with 4 ‘Superior Producer’ awards this also enabled her to gain ‘Elite’ status. She has given us four heifers to date, with a Vigor daughter in the herd and another by Shrek in the youngstock, along with two granddaughters, so her legacy looks set to continue for a while yet.

Cimarron Pete’s Pauline 2

Sired by the first Brown Swiss bull to have a proof with over 2000lb of milk, Johann Pete Rose, Pauline was born in December 1995 and was one of a number of yearlings that we bought with us when we moved from Staffordshire to Wiltshire. We had used Pete Rose quite widely back then, and all had proved to be milky cows, so we were initially quite dis-appointed when Pauline only produced a heifer lactation of 5789kg—the lowest yielding of all the daughters. It just goes to show that you have to give Brown Swiss a chance! Pauline is now at the end of her 12th lactation, having produced 120 tonnes so far. She is

Cimarron Spirit Denise—pictured dry with her 10th

classified EX93 2E and is also ‘Elite’. She has given us an EX90 3E Elite daughter by Entice who had also produced over 50 tonnes when we lost her to the dreaded TB, and there is a TD daughter in the pipeline. We also have a VG87 Special granddaughter in the milking herd, and another by Jolt, aswell as a VG85 great granddaughter sired by Vigor and a TD due to calve in September.

A promising dynasty!

Cimarron Even Jenny

The star of the show (at least according to Mike). We have written about Jenny (or Clever, as we know her) before, so this is just a bit of an update. A first cross daughter of Victory Acres Simon Even, she was born in March 1997. A common thread to this arti-cle is not very spectacular first lactations, and Jenny was no exception with just 5561kgs in her heifer lactation. She has gone on to produce over 126 tonnes to date, in 13 lacta-tions—an average of 9745kg per lactation. She has an average calving interval of 373 days, having only ever required a second service on two occasions . Her cell count aver-ages 132, having never been treated for mastitis. Her Lifetime Daily Yield stands at 22.4kg and she has produced in excess of 10,000kg Combined Fat & Protein. She is

classified EX91 4E, is Elite and was Breed Champion at the 2004 Dairy Event. She is in calf with her 14th calf.

She has three daughters in the herd, with her eldest by R Hart CJ Jemstone, scoring EX91 4E and in her 10th lacta-tion. Her other daughters (by Jolt and TD) are scored EX90 and GP84 (2 yr) and she also has a GP84(2yr) grand-daughter milking by Top Acres Bond 007.Also coming through are daughters by Denver & Solution, grandaughters by Mojo, Prodigo and Monarch and a great granddaughter by TD—by the time we’ve finished, I reckon half the herd

will be Jennies!

With another 14 cows in the herd yield-ing 50 tonnes plus, we are proud of how well our cows are lasting. They may not be by the most fashionable sires or have the highest yields, but they have proven that they have what it takes to work at the business end of the job. JAYNE EDWARDS CIMARRON BROWN SWISS

Switzerland In December 2012 the whole Brown Swiss community will meet in a unique event at the Olma Arena , St. Gallen, with The BRUNA, European Championship of Brown Swiss cattle and the World Congress of Brown Swiss breeders. In anticipation of visitors from the UK, here we take a look at some of the cows which might be competing for honours at this major event.

Swiss Classic

The show season in Switzerland is pretty much the opposite of ours here in the UK. There are many local shows but they also have quite a few National shows which the top breeders will try to attend. The Swiss Classic was held in December 2011, and is held every other year. One of the heifer classes saw 2 animals standing 1st and 2nd which should be real eye catchers as 2nd calvers. Winning the class was Steiners Jolden Ashton, sired by Jolden and out of Collection Alisha EX who was herself a show cow, as was her dam Ace Arve EX97 a show champion. Ashton was Reserve Junior Champion of the show and went on to also be Intermediate Champion at Swiss Expo Lausanne and Reserve Champion at the Gotthard Open in April. Gotthard Open is the major National show for milking heifers only.

Swiss Classic: 1st Jolden Ashton, 2nd Zenit Ultra, 3rd Bürkli's BS Nesta NENA

2nd to Ashton in the class was Gislers Zenit Ultra. This heifer went on to have a super show season, but seemed to always be 2nd , and mostly to her stablemate RB Nesta Judy. Judy was also at Swiss Classic where she was 3rd in her class, Zenit Ultra was Honourable Mention behind Ashton of the Junior show, but this would be the only time Ultra would beat Nesta Judy. As Judy developed through the season she won almost every class and was also Junior Champion at the IGBS show in February and Champion at the Gotthard Open this time beating Ultra and Ashton. Another heifer who won her class at the Gotthard Open and was a late developer was PTT Jongleur Sandra 4 from the Pedrini stable, she might also be one to watch in St Gallen.

RB Nesta Judy

Swiss Classic 1st Pitsch's Sesam ALISCHA, 2nd Tau Julia

One of the real stars of Swiss Classic was the 2nd calver Pitsch's Sesam ALISCHA, an outstanding individual who could well be a contender for the overall title at the Bruna. A very dairy animal with a superb udder, worth travelling a long way to look at. She did not appear again in the ring but was Junior Champion and Overall Reserve Champion at Swiss Classic.

Lindenhof-Top BS Macky MIRANDA

The 3rd calf class at Swiss Classic again saw 2 super cows 1st and 2nd. Lindenhof-Top BS Macky MIRANDA ad caught my eye as a heifer at Swiss Expo Lausanne 2009, but how well did she develop. One of the stand-out cows of Switzerlands show season with an amazing mammary, she stood ahead of Schmibach's Collection CORELLA, another cow who improved as the year went on, and she herself was Champion 2 months later at Swiss Expo Lausanne, before Mackys Miranda was again Champion at the IGBS show at the end of February.

Schmibach's Collection CORELLA

Switzerland has been preparing for the Brown Swiss world arriving at its doors and you can be sure that the breeders will have prepared a feast of top quality animals for us all to see. The welcome will be warm, though if you are going, take some warm clothing, the weather might not!! Swissgenetics will have farm tours in the days leading up to the show so anyone planning a trip might be advised to go over a few days before rather than spending too many days thereafter. Contact Christiaan Heijink from Swissgenetics.

9th World Congress of Brown Swiss Breeders The 9th gathering of Brown Swiss breeders from around the world, takes place in St Gallen Switzerland from 6th—8th December 2012.

The World Conference will coincide with the National and European Brown Swiss Champion-ships, at which 400 cattle from Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Italy, France and Slovenia are expected to take part. The Conference, itself, will take place on 6th & 7th December and will see speakers from various countries discussing the topics of ‘Brown Swiss in Different Pro-duction Systems’, ‘Genomic Selection’ and ‘Functional Traits’. The Show will be held on Friday 7th & Saturday 8th December.

St Gallen sits at an altitude of 675m in the east of the country, not far from the German/Austrian border and just east of Zurich. Situated between Lake Constance and the Appenzell Alps, it has a population of around 70,000 German speakers and is one of the highest cities in Switzerland, experiencing large snowfalls in winter. Closest airports are Zurich and Frie-drichshafen (just over the border in Germany) with direct flights to Zurich from Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh & London, and from Edinburgh, Manchester, Birmingham and London to Friedrichschafen.

Accommodation prices range from 115—320 Swiss Francs (£75-£210) per night for a double room. Entry into the Show is 15 Francs (approx £10) for foreign visitors and covers both days. For those wishing to participate in the conference there is a fee of 420 Swiss francs (£275) which includes most meals, Gala Dinner, Entry to the Show, and Conference Registra-tion & Documents. There is also an alternative programme for those accompanying Confer-ence delegates which includes visits to St Gallen, a local brewery and a Chocolate factory. Full details on all the above, registration forms and hotel bookings can be found at

www.bruna2012.com

For anyone wishing to make a longer break of it and see more of Switzerland and its Brown Swiss cows, Dan Gil-bert of New Generation Genetics has said that UK mem-bers are welcome to join all, or part, of the US tour which lasts from 2nd to 12th December, takes in parts of Germany and Austria aswell as Switzerland and com-bines sightseeing with Farm Visits. UK breeders would be responsible for booking their own return flights but Dan would help with hotel bookings etc.

If anyone wants to join the American Tour please contact Dan as soon as possible as the tour has limited spaces left. His email address is [email protected], or you can ring him on 001 920 568 0554 . (Just remember he is 6 hours behind us though!)

The Welsh Dairy Show

First class of the day was the In Calf Heifer class. Just 2 heifers to place, but they were 2 good ones. First place went to Quarry Surge Sian. Sian was a very strong heifer with great depth of body and openness of rib, she was correct in the legs and over the rump. It was her depth and superior development that gave her the advantage over the younger and very stylish AKA Glenn Sar-Lily. Both heifers showed good promise underneath and I look forward to seeing them in the ring when they calf down next year.

Three very different dry cows entered the ring next and it was Pedrini Top Ticino Prunki Aria who ended at the top of the line. Aria carrying her 2nd calf (due that day!) showed more openness of rib and was longer throughout the body than second placed Quarry Luke Bali. Bali, carrying her 3rd calf was a very strong cow with great legs and feet and plenty of capacity, and it was her capacity in body that gave her the advantage over Quarry Cosmos Heke.

Next in were a quality group of heifers in milk. 1st place in this class went to the very correct and stylish Sedgemoor La Zeus Jilly J. She was full of dairy quality and strength, a well attached udder with tremendous texture and great legs with steep, deep healed feet. All in all a really super heifer! It was her all round qualities and extra style that gave her the advantage over the very well balanced Quarry Luke Bali in 2nd place. Bali took 2nd place with her extra height and width in the rear udder over Sun-Made Prunki Tracy, who herself was a very well put together heifer with great body, deep open rib and very deep heal.

1st placed 2nd calver went to Quarry Luke Lovely, in a very strong class of young cows. Lovely had loads of style and a super udder on a very silky dairy frame. On the day she showed more fullness in the body over 2nd place Quarry Zeus Bali. Bali had beautiful dairy character and a super udder, she has all the ingredients to make a really great cow for years to come. It was her dairy quality and extra udder support that gave her the advantage over the very fresh but well balanced Quarry Luke Liz3.

Two cows entered the ring for the cow with 3 calves class and it was Sedgemoor Picasso Trulla who took top honours here. She is a tall cow with a beautiful sweep of rib, with good height and width in the rear udder. Trulla also has a great clean dairy bone quality and walked round the ring extremely well. It was her over all qualities that gave her the advantage over the tall and strong Quarry Zeus Orange.

Bath & West Dairy Show 2011

In milk heifers 1st place Sedgemoor La Zeus Jilly, a really good heifer with great dairy strength, super fore udder with great veination. It was the balance of the udder that gave it the advantage over my 2nd place Sedgemoor Diablo Dream Toni, a stylish dairy heifer with good legs and feet . It was the strength through the front end and the udder and teat quality that gave it advantage over 3rd place Quarry Scipio Liz 2, who was a little more settled in the udder than 4th place Cancourt Solstice, a very fresh milky heifer who just needed a little more time.

Cows in milk went to Sedgemoor Piccaso Trulla. This cow really caught the eye when she entered the ring. Tall, stylish, long neck and walked on great legs and feet. Her overall style and balance that gave it advantage over 2nd place Cancourt Sheila. A really milky cow with a good udder. It was the width in the rear udder and ligament definition that gave it the advantage over 3rd place Quarry Luke Lovely, a really well balanced cow, that will be around for a long time. The length and attachment of the fore udder that gave it the advantage over 4th place Quarry Broker Liz.

Champion went to Piccaso Trulla, Reserve Sedgemoor Zeus Jilly.

Stranraer Show Report Wednesday 25th July, was Stranraer Show. It’s a local show in South West Scotland. Dad, Mum, Daniel, Gary (who works for us) and I went to participate in the show.

When we first went into the show ground, Mum, Gary and I washed the cows, and put the feeding out. About 10-15 minutes later, Dad and Daniel came in, with the last load of cows.

The cows we took were Highlight Pro-View Roseanna, Soulseat Pitagora Molly, Soulseat Jackpot Lyndy, Soulseat Event Candy and Soulseat Zola Marion.

The first class was to go in. I was leading Jackpot Lyndy. We walked around a few times, and then the judge gave me a lovely red rosette. I was chuffed!

In the Maiden Heifers, Daniel lead Pitagora Molly, He also got a first. In the Dry Cows class, Mum lead Pro-View Roseanna. Next it was the Heifer in Milk, Daniel lead Event Candy, which got first prize. After that it was the Cow in Milk class, Zola Marion was lead by dad.

After all of that there was an interbreed class, in which Zola Marion got third, out of seven but all that matters is…..she beat the Holsteins!

Then it was on to the pairs. Gary and Daniel lead Event Candy, and Pro-View Roseanna, Mum and I lead Jackpot Lyndy and Pitagora Molly. The sad thing was we got beat by the boys!

We then went on to the Any Other Breed Supreme Championship. Pro-View Roseanna got Reserve champion.

Then it was the Young Handlers. I was leading a Holstein calf from Robert Buchanan, Laigh Kilphin, but it got me 6th place, whilst Daniel was sitting 8th. There were around 18 calves and handlers in the 11-15 age group.

BROWN SWISS IN THE NEWS

Scottish Dairy Farmer It is testament to the hard work of the McColm family that they featured in the Scottish Dairy Farmer newspaper earlier this year. Robert & Sheila have only had Swiss in their herd for five years after deciding to look into other breeds for various reasons including milk quality. Their first plunge came at Beeston in 2007 where they bought their first 15 pure and cross-bred Swiss. Since then they haven’t looked back and although they initially believed that the Swiss wouldn’t bring a high yield, they now realise this

is in Roberts words ‘a myth’ with the Swiss averaging 8088 kg, butterfat at 4.29% and protein 3.49%. The heifers are producing 7805kg, with 4.25% butterfat and 3.57% protein.

Robert believes that the breed have come a long way since UK farmers first dabbled with them some 25 years ago, ‘they have changed a lot over the years and there is far more choice of genetics now’ Robert says. This summer will bring the majority of their herd to Brown Swiss for the first time. And with youngsters Lorna and Daniel who are themselves keen young farmers of the future, the interest in dairying with Brown Swiss will I am sure continue.

Country & Farming Helena Williams couldn’t be described as anything less than passionate about her cows. Her story was featured in the Country & Farming newspaper in Welshpool, Powys. Swissy or Swissydoll as Helena affectionately nicknames her is a Swiss cross and is now 19 years old.

Helen is now in calf to what Helena thinks is her 16th calf. Swissy, although clearly a dear friend of the Williams family is still doing her bit for the business, producing 30 litres a day.

We all know that the Swiss are renowned for their longevity, and Swissy just goes to prove that fact.

UK BULL PROOFS—AUGUST 2012 Data supplied by DairyCo

Swiss Cuties

A2 Milk & Brown Swiss There has been quite a bit written in the farming press recently about A2 milk, particularly given the announcement by Wiseman’s, that they want to begin sourcing some to supply a growing niche market. So what is A2 milk and can Brown Swiss play a part in it’s development?

Milk contains six different types of protein—four casein proteins and two whey proteins. The casein proteins make up about 80% of milk and one of these is beta casein, of which the two most common forms are A1 and A2.

Originally ALL milk was A2, but due to a genetic mutation at some point, the A1 form appeared and, gradually, became the prevalent form of beta casein. However, recent studies have be-gun to show a possible link between A1 milk and some illnesses, namely diabetes, heart dis-ease, schizophrenia and autism, although any link is far from proven. It has also been sug-gested that it may be the reason some people have a perceived intolerance of standard milk and this could be the main area for growing demand. In contrast, A2 milk is being mooted as the ‘healthy’ option and is gaining favour in several countries, with Australia leading the way in both its promotion and consumption, with some 30% of milk sold in Australia being A2 milk.

Humans, goats and, in fact most mammals, produce solely A2 milk and despite the increase in A1 milk in cattle, there are still breeds that produce the original A2 milk. These are usually more ’traditional ‘ breeds, such as water buffalo, zebu and yak, but don’t worry, it doesn’t mean that we have all got to start milking yak!

The modern dairy breeds still produce some A2 milk , although the percentage varies between breeds. The Guernsey has the highest proportion of the A2 beta casein gene at over 90%. The lowest proportion is found in the Holstein breed, with only 35% carrying the gene, whilst Brown Swiss have the second highest proportion at around 65%. All the other main dairy breeds have about 50%. It should be stressed that there is variation between individual ani-mals though, and a particular animals status can be determined by a simple DNA test.

As a result of all this interest, more and more AI companies are beginning to test their bulls to establish whether they carry the ‘desirable’ A2 gene. The Brown Swiss world is no different

and the first A2 bulls are now being identified, with one of the initial sires to be identified as positive, being Sun Made Vigor.

Obviously, there is still a lot of work to be done in this area and as time goes by, more A2 bulls will be identified. However, with 65% of the Brown Swiss population purported to be carrying the A2 gene, it can be expected that there will be many more bulls available, that carry this desirable trait.

It should be stressed that A2 milk does not contain only A2 beta casein, but is ‘rich’ in it—ie has a higher proportion. Therefore, milk from cows which carry both genes can still be sold as A2 milk. Hence milk from a wholly Brown Swiss herd could probably be sold as A2, given the percentage of the breed that carries the A2 gene, especially if the breeding of that herd involved ‘carrier’ bulls.
