STANDERTON - What was supposed to be a fun filled afternoon for three youngsters from Thuthukani, turned into a nightmare for their parents.

It is assumed that on Monday, 30 November, the three young boys, aged between eight and 10 years, took to the veld with their dog, perhaps for a little hunting, and they decided to cool off in a small water filled trench.

The bottom of the trench is very deceiving as it is only a few centimetres deep for a few meters, and then drops off to over four metres.

A howling dog, jumping into the water and swimming in circles drew the attention of people living closeby, and after asking some questions, it became apparent that all three children disappeared into the water and that their dog was frantically searching for them. When police divers arrived, the dog once again leaped into the water with the divers, licking their hands and swimming in a circle over a very deep pit. One of the boys was retrieved shortly thereafter, but as night fell, divers from the Lowveld Unit had to be called in for extra support. Shortly after their arrival the other two bodies were also retrieved.

The names of the three cannot be made public at this stage as they still have to be positively identified.

Divers from the diving units urge the community, especially parents and people living close to waterholes and dams, to warn their children about the dangers of water. If you cannot swim and you cannot see the bottom, it is too deep for you and you should stay away. JD

Youngsters drown

Both Highveld and Lowveld Unit divers retrieved the bodies of three youngsters just after 23:00 on Monday, 30 November. It is assumed that the three friends wanted to cool off in a water filled trench after a day playing in the veld, when their dog alerted nearby people that something is amiss.

STANDERTON - The SAPS embarked on Operation Fiela on Friday night, 13 November. They received a tip-off from members of the public about suspects in Azalea who were smoking dagga in a house and sprang into action. Once inside, they found four men in possession of dagga and other drugs. They were all arrested on the spot and charged with possession of dagga and drugs.

Lieutenant Johannes Nhlabathi said another suspect was ar-rested and when the police searched him on another occasion in Princess Street they found dagga in his pockets. All suspects spent the weekend behind bars and were due to appear in court on Mon-day, 16 November. DM

STANDERTON - The festive season is right around the corner and South Africa will be faced with high volumes of motorists trying to reach their different holiday destinations. Standerton is at the centre of transit to three different provinces, namely the Free State, Gauteng, and KwaZulu-Natal. The R23 linking Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, has become notorious for road deaths and it has been compared to the killer Moloto-road between Pretoria and Kwandebele.

Concerned about the loss of life on the R23, Lekwa Executive Mayor, Counsellor LR Dhlamini, invited religious and traditional leaders to a prayer session on the infamous road just outside Standerton next to Extension Six on Thursday, 26 November.

Servants of God from different denominations, religions and beliefs came together to pray. Christians and Muslims alike headed the call. The flow of traffic was disrupted when the road was closed for 30 minutes in order to allow for the special prayer service. In the middle of the road, servants of God knelt down on their knees and prayed for peace and protection on the roads during the holiday season. Pastor Pat van der Westhuizen took the lead. They then prayed for stability among the town’s people and also for much needed rain.

Counsellor Dhlamini thanked all the participants and officials from Lekwa Municipality for taking the time to honour his call. He once again urged all the people of Standerton to unite and put aside their differences over this coming festive season. DM

Mayor calls for divine intervention

The R23 has become synonymous with deaths over the holiday season. Religious leaders from all over Standerton came together in prayer and ask the Lord’s protection over the Standerton community and roads when many families will be travelling to their holiday destinations.

Meer as 25 persone was betrokke by verlede Woensdagaand se poging om wéér koperkabels te steel by New Denmark Colliery se kabelbergingsterrein.

JD

To the frustration of many residents, cattle are roaming the streets of the central busi-ness district of Standerton. This is not only a hazard to vehicles, but also poses a real dan-ger to pedestrians and shop owners. Should an inattentive motorist swerve to avoid hit-ting one of the animals, an innocent pedes-trian may be run over. These animals may also scare easily and run into a shop, caus-ing damage and frustration, or hurt pedestri-ans and shoppers. Some time ago a cow ran into a furniture shop and the assistance of bystanders as well as the SAPS and the Traf-fic Department had to be called in. The cow escaped unharmed, but severe damage was suffered by the store.

Corrugated metal sheets were strewn about Marais Street after a gust of wind ripped it from the roof of Ashanty Tavern in Azalea.

PROVINCIAL - The Health Department’s procurement of 18 new mobile clinics which have been converted and branded and are currently awaiting delivery, are welcomed.

These mobile clinics will go a long way in making healthcare accessible to even the most remote parts of Mpumalanga.

These mobile clinics must be delivered to their respective areas as soon as possible to alleviate long queues and improve healthcare services across the province.

The department plans to replace 35 old mobile clinics be-tween now and 2018 and they will be distributed as follows: 18 to Ehlanzeni District Municipality, 11 to Nkangala District Municipality and six to Gert Sibande District Municipality.

It is believed that it is high time for Health MEC, Gillion Mashego to start tackling the ailments in his department head on.

This is another step in the right direction and the Democrat-ic Alliance will continue their role of oversight to ensure the people of Mpumalanga reap the benefits and have access to proper healthcare services which will improve their quality of life. Mashego must ensure accountability within his depart-ment and drive the turnaround strategy to avoid being placed under curatorship again.

Desperate patients, especially those in rural areas, are being unnecessarily exposed to suffering due to the lack of access to proper healthcare services. These mobile clinics must be used solely to better the lives of our citizens.

The DA will continue to fight for access of all citizens to

Tavern-goers narrowly escape serious injuriesSTANDERTON - Patrons and staff of Ashanty Tavern in Azalea, ran in all directions and others forced their way under cover of the counter when a strong gust of wind suddenly ripped the roof off of the tavern on Wednes-day, 11 November. According to an eye wit-ness who wants to remain anonymous, he was sitting in his car, just a few meters away, when he saw a cloud of dust and wind rolling in be-hind the tavern. Within seconds metal sheets from the roof were ripped from the structure, flung in the sky and landed in the street. By a stroke of luck there weren’t any people or cars in the street at that moment.

When Cosmos News arrived on the scene, visibly shocked patrons sang praises to God for protecting them. One person was quoted: “It is still a miracle that, when the incident that lasted less than sixty seconds happened, there were no passersby in the busy Marais Street; otherwise we could have experienced a tragedy”.

Traffic was partially disrupted until onlook-ers and motorists helped to remove the metal sheets. Luckily no-one sustained any injuries, and the main roof structure remains intact. DM

SAKHILE - The country is in desperate need of rain and the drought is taking its toll. It is a threat to the economy and food security of the nation.

Farmers are facing a bleak future with livestock dying of hunger. Many cities and towns are already experiencing water shortages. KwaZulu-Natal and the North West province have been declared disaster areas due to extreme drought.

The present situation has compelled religious leaders to stand up and call divine intervention. Pastors from Standerton decided to host a special prayer day on Wednesday,

18 November. The service was held at the Nicholas Bhengu Memorial in Sakhile. Hundreds of worshippers from different denominations flocked to the evening prayer services.

Pastor VW Mashinini led a four-hour prayer session where after the power of prayer was witnessed as heavenly rains came pouring down that evening.

One of the VIP attendees was Mama Mantuli Zuma, the wife of President Jacob Zuma, who travelled all the way from KwaZulu-Natal to be with the people of Standerton for the prayer service. DM

hierdie skatte in jou besit wou hê?

In 1 Ko-rintiërs 2:9 staan geskrywe: “Niemand het nog ooit so iets gesien of gehoor nie. In sy wildste drome kon niemand nog ooit hom-self so iets voorstel nie. Ek praat van al die dinge wat God reggemaak het vir die mense wat Hom liefhet.”

Wat is op jou wenslys? In Matteus 6:33 (KJV) belowe God ons: “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

STANDERTON - “Count me in, I am against the abuse of women and children in our society.” This is the theme adopted nationwide in a campaign against the abuse of women and children. It has been 17 years since the government introduced a national campaign to stop abuse. This national campaign stretches from 25 October to 10 December and is aimed at reducing the carnage of spousal abuse as well as the abuse of children. In Lekwa Municipality, 16 Days of Activism was launched on Thursday, 26 November, at the Church Of Jesus in Extension Seven.

The event was organized by the Gert Sibande regional office of the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, which is led by Ms Busi Khanye, Head of Community Safety Promotion. The event was preceded by a door-to-door campaign on Wednesday by all the various stakeholders such as members of the Community Policing Forum (CPF), with Captain J Hlatswayo representing SAPS, social workers from the Standerton Department of Social Services, community development workers, and Ward Counsellor, J Masuku. During this campaign, 200 families were visited and many victims of abuse opened up about their sadness and frustrations with abuse. Horrific stories of abuse were revealed and officials applauded

door-to-door campaigning as the most effective strategy to get to the plight of abused women and children over.

Sergeant L Hammond from Standerton Cluster Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, urged victims of rape to report it to the police immediately in order to receive speedy assistance, and warned parents to report child rape instead of protecting the perpetrator because they run the risk losing a breadwinner. She urged victims not to clean themselves and change clothes after being raped, as this will assist the forensic experts in gathering satisfactory evidence. In some cases victims can be at risk for contracting HIV-Aids. The sooner the insident is reported, the better for victims, as they can receive the proper medical attention.

Ms T Thangekwayo, a social worker in child abuse cases, gave a brief outline of forms of abuse to the audience. Ms M Shiba, another social worker, outlined the rights of the victims as noted in the constitution of the Republic of South Africa. Mama Sehlako, took to the stage with the Word of God. She delivered a moving and emotional message of hope to women and children. The assembly then joined hands to form a chain of prayer. They prayed for divine intervention against crime, bloodshed and for safety on the roads during the coming festive season. DM

VAL - He was supposed to be enjoying the last years of his life with his grandchildren at home, but a 65-year-old pensioner is facing charges of theft after he was nabbed by members of Val SAPS with 480 liters of stolen diesel in his possession.

If convicted, he will spend years behind bars. According to the Communications Officer of Val Police Station, Constable V Lephoto, the suspect was found by police after a tip-off on the Embalenhle Road on Wednesday, 11 November, at midday. The accused’s van was standing on the side of the road with a flat tyre. A few metres from the van, was a stack of twenty-four 20-litre containers full of diesel.

When confronted by police about the diesel, the man first denied any knowledge

of the diesel, but eventually he confessed to the police that he stole the diesel from a farm just a few kilometres away. He was arrested on the spot and taken into custody to face a charge of theft. The farmer was contacted by police and he admitted that the diesel was stolen from his farm the previous night. Constable Lephoto confirmed that the suspect appeared in Standerton Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 12 November. In the meantime the diesel is being kept at the police station while an investigation is underway. “Police are following clues, and more arrests are expected soon”, Constable Lephoto said.

Farmers are urged to take stock regularly, in order to make sure that no stock is missing. DM

SAKHILE - Themba Sithebe, a resident of Sakhile, brought it under the attention of Cosmos News that a local businessman, Mr Vilakazi, who has an office in the central business district of Standerton, was appointed to do some expansions to his house.

After the work was done, a tile roof was erected and Vilakazi was paid the full amount of R18 000. After the first rains in September, it became apparent that there was a serious roof leak and this leak caused severe damage to the ceiling, the furniture as well as to the inside of the house.

Since then, empty promises were received by Sithebe about the repair work that will be done to the roof, and later Vilakazi plainly refused to attend to the matter any further. According to Sithebe, Vilakazi employs Mozam-bican nationals, of which one is known as Aubert Jozini,

to work for him, and these citizens are afraid of deporta-tion as they are not in possession of the necessary im-migration papers and blindly follow the instructions of Vilakazi.

Sithebe was later forced to appoint a second contractor, Celumusa Trading and Projects, to remove the roof and replace it with a new structure. The replacement of this roof cost Sithebe a further R12 000, but the roof is now perfect and leak free.

Sithebe wishes to warn the community against Vilakazi, as he employs outsiders to do work that could be given to the local community, and then takes the money and does not want to do repairs on the shoddy workmanship he and his team did in the first place.

Sithebe also expresses his gratitude and satisfaction by the work done by Celumusa. JD

PROVINCIAL - Emerging farmers in Mpumalanga don’t only have to battle against elements such as drought, hail and an un-inclusive economy; they also have to bear the brunt of the Depart-ment of Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmen-tal Affairs’ (DARDLEA) shortcomings.

In its annual report for the 2014/15 financial year, DARDLEA has shown once again that it is not committed to uplifting emerg-ing farmers. The department spent almost its entire budget of over R1 billion to only meet 63.8% of its set targets.

Year after year, emerging farmers under the Masibuyele Emasi-mini Project are made to wait long periods for tractors to plough their land. Sometimes these tractors don’t even arrive, forcing the farmers to plough small and unprofitable plots. According to the annual report, over 10 000 ha of land belonging to land and agricultural reform beneficiaries was left unploughed. As a result, DARDLEA could only create 381 jobs out of a targeted 566.

The department claims to have achieved 14 out of 20 of its tar-gets in the farmer support and development program but when giving his opinion on the performance of DARDLEA, the Auditor General was unable to validate these statistics. What is surprising is that DARDLEA was able to supply numerous heads of cattle from the Masibuyele Esibayeni Project to traditional leaders this past weekend, yet the matter concerning farmers who lost their cattle in a natural disaster was closed without adequate compen-sation.

Calls for assistance, made to DARDLEA MEC, Andries Ga-mede, to support emerging farmers, given the opportunity, as they will form the backbone of our economy. These calls have evi-dently fallen on deaf ears as it is clear that MEC Gamede has no plan to see emerging farmers prosper. With Mpumalanga being added to the list of provinces affected by the drought, it has be-come even more crucial for MEC Gamede to reign himself in and focus on helping emerging farmers survive this tough period. SAKHILE - A concerned resident approached Cos-mos News and brought it under our attention that young girls, especially between the ages of six and 14, are being targeted by foreign nationals who own tuck shops in Sakhile. This follows after the resident was teaching a group of girls and asked them to speak openly.

She was shocked to learn that each and every girl in that class was at some stage lured with sweets and were promised even more, should they return every day. One girl even had a photograph on her phone of one of the men posing naked, and another said that she was told to keep on returning until she was 10 years of age. A young girl who received a sponsorship letter from school was told by these men that they will give a donation, but only after the little girl kissed them.

Schools and parents are responsible to teach and

warn young children about the dangers lurking in the streets. They should also know that they must at no stage accept any candy or money from strangers, even if it seems to be legitimate, without the consent of their parents. The children must have the courage to speak to their parents about such events, and if they still feel threatened, they should report the matter to the police.

Apparently, the same citizen and a few of her friends noticed how a young girl was lured to a parked vehicle a while ago, and when they confronted the man, he said that he was just giving the child some change.

Parents must always be aware of what their children are doing, where they are and with whom they are spending time. Parents must also not send these young children to shebeens to buy them alcohol or cigarettes as these places are very dangerous for children and they can be abducted, raped or even killed. JD

PROVINCIAL - It is concerning that the Department of Com-munity Safety, Security and Liaison in Mpumalanga spent R7.4 million less on training and development and has cut its fleet budget by R9.6 million in the 2014/15 financial year. 50 traffic officers were not trained in firearm handling and a further 50 were not recruited for training while 356 schools were excluded in road safety programmes.

This was revealed in the annual report for the 2014/15 finan-cial year, where the Auditor General (AG) has given the depart-ment a qualified audit opinion for a second year in a row. The AG sites insufficient evidence to support the accumulated debt and revenue collected as stated by the department as the main reason for this opinion. It is crucial that traffic officers undergo the basic traffic officer training and then commence with their duties, to enforce the rules of the road and to ensure the safety

of our road users.Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shon-

gwe’s performance in his department puts a big question mark on whether his appointment as acting Premier in Mpumalanga was the right move. How will the MEC oversee the province’s finances if he fails to deal with just one department? This de-partment has also managed to increase the amount spent on con-tractors from R12.2 million in 2013/14, to R34.5 million in the 2014/15 financial year. The department further went on to un-derspend its total budget by R15.5 million and reported fruitless and wasteful expenditure of R63 194 589 as well as unauthor-ized expenditure of R89 511 000.

The AG also states that this department’s leadership is lacking as it did not always ensure ongoing monitoring and supervision to enable an assessment of effectiveness internal control. The

JD

Black Aces surprises local soccer enthusiastsSAKHILE - About 64 young aspiring soccer players from Sakhile had a golden opportunity to be taken through their paces on the soccer field by one of the Professional Soccer League teams in South Africa. Mpumalanga Black Aces Football Club was at Sakhile Stadium to conduct a soccer clinic on Saturday, 14 November.

The soccer clinic was sponsored by Lakama under the sponsorship of Steinmuller Standerton. Mr Verran Koen who is the General Manager of Steinmuller is the brains behind the project.

Mpumalanga Black Aces did not hesitate to come on board

with the project as social responsibility highly supported by the club.

The clinics were conducted by Football Academy coaches under the watchful eye of the team Technical Director, Mr Jacob Sekale who is well known in football circles.

Mr Andreas Christodoulou, Mpumalanga Black Aces FC Academy Administrator, told the media that the team is con-ducting clinics all around the province to unearth raw talent in the townships and rural areas.

As a team they believe soccer skills-development at grass roots level is very important for producing future soccer stars

for the national team. With three development coaches at hand to take boys and girls through their paces, the day will forever remain treasured by the young stars of Sakhile. Eight local coaches also attended basic coaching clinics.

Lekwa Local Municipality Executive Mayor, Counsellor LR Dhlamini, Municipal Manager, LB Tshabalala and HOD Ms M Radebe graced the occasion with their presence. The mayor expressed his sincere appreciation on behalf of the municipality and the people of Lekwa, to the Mpumalanga Black Aces Management and further stated that he hopes the relationship will grow stronger.
