FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Last Sunday’s snowstorm certainly wreaked havoc with many of us as the snow and the ice kept coming. Fortu-nately, we didn’t get the anticipated 18”, but it was still enough to interfere with a lot of plans.

But there was something beautiful that happened last weekend.

Most of our parishioners joined us for the Vigil Mass on Saturday night. And when I say “most,” I’m very seri-ous. The church was packed as was the chapel. Had I realized we would be so crowded, I would have opened the wall between the church and the chapel, but those who were there seemed to take it all in stride. It was a bit like the 4:00 o’clock Mass on Christmas Eve except better! Everyone who was there joined us, not out of custom or for the sake of getting Mass out of the way. Everyone was there because they wanted to be! That was amazing! It felt like we were one huge family gathered together to celebrate our common faith in the Lord Jesus. And it seemed like the more people who came for Mass, the more enthusiasm and excitement was being generated. I watched as people came into the church, and at first, the looks were saying, “where am I ever going to get a seat?” to “what’s going on here today?” to “everybody must be coming ahead of the storm,” to smiles because the church was so full. I watched that scenario play out and the energy in the church was amazing!

We are so good when we are together as a parish family. There was a genuine joy at that Mass which was balanced out by a differ-ent sense of community at the Sunday Masses. The full church clear-ly made for a wonderful celebration with so much participation and a sincere demonstration of faith. (Were some of us praying for a Pats victory? It’s entirely possible, but folks were praying!) That was bal-anced out by a whole different experience on Sunday. With attend-ance at 20, 24, and 32 at the Sunday Masses, there was a sense of in-timacy and closeness on Sunday. There was a feeling of “rah-rah” at the Vigil Mass and quiet contemplation at the Sunday Masses. But what was amazing to me was that with more than 600 souls or fewer than 40, God was well praised. That is a great credit to our parish-ioners!

Even last week at Lectio, I noted that many parishes just don’t have the number of people participating in adult faith formation programs as we do at Saint Kathryn’s. We had a good attendance at the Thursday evening session, but not as full as usual. I had to remind them that most places would love to have the 20 or so participants who showed up on a cold, nasty Thursday night. For us, it was a small number; for other communities, they would be thrilled. The point is that we are engaged as a parish community, inviting and welcoming members of other parish communities to be a part of our faith formation, so that we can love and appreciate our faith all the more. By virtue of the fact that so many participate in our programs, it says that the faith is very much alive and we’re doing our best—even if only by our example and fidelity to attending faith formation—that Jesus Christ is more than just im-portant to us. He is the reason that we exist; He is the one whom we are coming to know, love, and understand better.

Last weekend’s storm pointed out to me that however we can, wherever we can, and when we can, we want to know the Lord more. Whether it’s in a church full of parishioners or in the quiet of a daily Mass, Jesus Christ makes Himself known to us, and we make ourselves known to Him. Whether our church is “standing room on-ly” (which is always a delightful experience—invite your friends, hint, hint!) or a contemplative kind of Mass, the Lord comes to us in the form of bread and wine and gives Himself to us yet again in splendor, in majesty, and yes, sometimes even in the still small voice.

The Lord is pleased with our prayer, with our sacrifice, with our love. Now, may He open our hearts to receive His love in return!

Until next week...God bless! Father Joe

THE THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

OFFERTORY ENVELOPES

Are you still using offertory envelopes? Have you picked yours up yet? We have several boxes of enve-lopes that haven’t been claimed yet for calendar year 2019. Remember, after two years of non-use, the enve-lope number will be given to someone else. Envelopes can be picked up in the office during regular office hours. “Children’s envelopes” are also available for those who would like to introduce children to the idea of “giving” to the church. Even if it’s only a penny or nickel from their piggy banks, their gift will help support the church and its programs. This is a good time to remind you of the benefits of online giving. In just a few moments, you can set up recurring gifts to the church for everything from week-ly collections to special diocesan and Church collec-tions, as well as Catholic Charities. This is a tremen-dous help to us as we prepare the annual budget. The easiest way to sign up is by way of our parish web-site (www.stkathryns.org). Simply click on the “Donate” tab and then “Online Giving” and follow the quick, easy steps to weekly, monthly, quarterly, or an-nual giving. It’s all in your control and on a secured website. Why not consider this as an option for your gift to the church? And while using the envelopes or online giving does not “mark” a person as a member of the parish, being a contributing member of the parish of record helps us when it comes to signing off on baptism or confirma-tion sponsor certificates. Sometimes this is the only way we know if a particular person is attending Mass regularly.

LECTIO: MARK

Our final session of the Bible Study, The Gospel according to Mark is this Thursday. Join us on Thursday, January 31 at 10:30

a.m. and 7:45 p.m. in the parish hall and reflect with us on the ending of one story and the beginning of our own!

CHOIR REHEARSALS RESUME

Choir rehearsals will resume on Wednesday, February 6th, from 7:45-9:00 p.m. in the church. We will begin preparing for Lent and Easter as well as looking for-ward to creating the program for our choir concert on June 2nd. Join with a wonderful group of talented musi-cians to sing God’s praises and lift the minds and hearts of our community!

CATHOLIC SCHOOL SUBSIDY

For those who have children in Catholic schools who will enter grades kindergarten through 8 in Septem-ber, 2019, a subsidy is available to those families who: • Are registered, practicing members of Saint

Kathryn parish; • Are contributing members of record to the parish

(envelopes or online giving); • Are active in the parish, e.g., participating in one

or more of our parish activities. Forms are available in the church and the parish of-fice, and must be completed by the parents/guardians and returned for signature by Father Joe. Forms are due back to the school no later than March 1, 2019. Please be mindful that no subsidy can be greater than a family’s annual contribution to the parish.

SATURDAY MORNING ROSARY

Did you know the Rosary is recited in common every Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. Our own parishioners and many from outside of our parish come together to pray the Rosary together prior to the 8:30 a.m. Mass. If you would be interested in sharing the responsibility of leading the Rosary, please contact Father Joe by email at [email protected]. There are many ways in which the Rosary can be led, so if we have enough vol-unteers, we can find any number of ways to share this prayer. We have two volunteers so far. Would you con-sider being our third? Thank you!

ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

THE THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

COLORING CONTEST

Calling all children of the parish! As we have just cele-brated the Feast of the Epiphany, and in honor of the Nativity of our Lord, let’s keep the spirit and the fun of the Christmas season going through the whole

month of January! Pick up your coloring page in the back of the church, at Religious Ed. Class, or in the Parish Office. There are two pages to choose from. One winner will be chosen from grades 1-6, and another for ages 5 and under. Prize bags include a gift card for Dairy Queen Ice Cream! Please write your name, grade, and phone num-ber on the back. Due to classes being canceled for snow, the extended due date for submissions is Febru-ary 4, 2019. All entries will be displayed in the Parish Hall, and the names of all winners will be announced in the bulletin!

MERCY MEALS

Are you a part of our Mercy Meal team? Are we fully updated on your contact information? Many people have given up their phone landlines and only carry their cell phones, so sometimes we can’t contact you when a Mercy Meal is planned. If you are already a part of our Mercy Meal team (bakers, sandwich makers, salad preparers, servers), we are grateful for your continued support. If you are in-terested in serving in this ministry, we would be happy for your help—in whatever capacity you can offer. Simply send your name, address, and phone number to us via email ([email protected]), or drop the infor-mation in an envelope marked “Mercy Meal Ministry” in the collection basket on Sunday. We’ll be back to you before you know it!

FIRST FRIDAY/PRESENTATION OF THE LORD/

SAINT BLAISE BLESSING OF THROATS

Next weekend will be a busy one. We begin with Mass on First Friday with Masses in the morning at 8:30 a.m. and in the evening at 7:00 p.m. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will continue until midnight follow-ing the evening Mass. Saturday is the feast of the Presentation of the Lord. At this Mass, we will have the blessing of candles and pro-cession into the church. (Note that the Mass on Satur-day morning will be in church.) Throats will be blessed following all of the weekend Masses next Sunday.

GALA DINNER-DANCE

Get your dancing shoes out and dust off those tuxes and gowns and be ready to go! (Really—business dress is perfectly acceptable!) Plan now to join us for our Ju-bilee Gala Dinner-Dance on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at the Radisson in Nashua. The members of our social committee are working dili-gently to ensure an evening of great food, beautiful dancing, reminiscing, dreaming, and reconnecting with parishioners. Set aside this date for “Saint Kathryn Strong.” Let’s make this Jubilee Year something that we can talk about for years! We are engaging every aspect of our life as a parish community—the liturgical, educational, social, and evangelical aspects of community life. Make your plans now to participate in a little bit of everything—including the fun times with our fellow parishioners.

GET FORMED!

Each year, the parish “gifts” our parishioners, benefac-tors, and friends a subscription to Augustine Institute’s program, FORMED. If you haven’t yet taken advantage of it, let us share with you the benefits of signing on and activating your subscription. FORMED has a wealth of Bible Studies, movies, chil-dren’s activities.
