FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Many of us are becoming more and more excited to welcome Sister Nancy Murray, OP, a Dominican Sister from Adrian, Michigan, to be with us next weekend for her performance of “Catherine of Siena: A Woman for Our Times.” This is the second performance in our Jubilee series (the first being “Vianney!” by Leonardo Defilippis last October). It couldn’t be more appropriate that Sister is joining us, not only in our Jubilee Year, but especially on the actual feast day of Saint Catherine of Siena! I know that for those who already have tickets, you will be in for a real treat! You can find some excerpts of the performance on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WklNUyM9Ty8 and a commemorative video of Sister Nancy’s Golden Jubilee celebration at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9jrRIEMBpM. Just watching these two videos will give you a glimpse into the won-derful woman who will be joining us next week. Do give yourself the time to enjoy these and prepare for an ex-traordinary experience of an extraordinary woman portraying an even more extraordinary woman!

I remember that a couple of years ago, I wrote about a phrase that appears in each of the Prefaces of Easter. “Overcome with paschal joy” is that phrase and in this Jubilee Year, I cannot help but reflect on it with you yet again, but this time in light of our Jubilee.

This Easter Triduum was a powerful one for all of us who participated in it. For myself, I was so caught up in the mysteries that we were celebrating that it was actually diffi-cult to fight back tears. Having come to know the stories of our then elect and candidates and the stories of the other eight parishioners whose feet were washed on Holy Thurs-day was beginning to become overwhelming. I kept think-ing about their families, some of whom are spread far and wide, and how we have become their family here in New Hampshire; of the children who are absolutely beautiful and innocent and who will, I pray, remember that moment for-ever; of men and women who have returned to the practice of the faith after a time of being away; of men and women who have been constant and whose journeys have been any-thing but predictable. I watched the faces of those who gazed at Our Lord during the procession to the repository and were filled with love and adoration. I remember seeing those same faces coming forward at the Good Friday litur-gies with a very different sense of love and longing as they venerated the cross of Our Lord. With the Easter Vigil, there was, as there always is, a sense of energy in the church that is palpable. Hearts that were clearly waiting for the alleluia to finally burst forth, bells ringing, candles being lighted (always a challenge and a half for the servers!), statues unveiled, as our church, which had been plunged into a spirit of penitence, was now returned to us in all its splendor. From my chair, I could watch the assembly gathered and see the joy of the resurrection so clearly mani-fested among us as lips sang “Glory to God in the highest” and “Alleluia!” Then, there was the moment of David’s baptism and the reception and confirmation of Matthew, Dave, James, and David, and the joy that was pouring forth as these men became members of the Church. And yes, on that night as on Easter Sunday, and even on these Sundays that follow, the joy that overtakes us yet again with the Rite of Sprinkling.

It was all of this and then the continuing celebrations, that can, in fact, “overcome” us with paschal joy. And now that we have celebrated our forty-ninth Triduum, it is even more overwhelming as we prepare for our fiftieth Trid-uum and the fifty years of proclaiming the mystery of the dying and rising of Jesus, and fifty years of bringing His risen presence to the Hudson community and beyond. This is our legacy—one which was begun in October of 1968 and continues powerfully to this day. And if we are fulfilling the mission of Jesus Christ, then it is no wonder that we are overcome with paschal joy—for the joy of the Risen Christ remains with us and grows stronger the more we proclaim Him!

Until next week...God bless! Father Joe

SAINT KATHRYN RELIGIOUS GOODS

They’re here! We’ve been talking about our Saint Kathryn’s Jubilee rosaries for a few weeks now and dis-play samples are now available in the store for viewing and ordering. These rosaries are all handmade by one of our parish-ioners, and you will be amazed by their quality. There are multiple choices of bead colors and sizes to choose from when you order your rosary. These are all made to order and are on a special order basis only. All or-ders must be paid in full in advance. All rosaries come in a gift box and include a rosary pouch and a rosary booklet. The center medallion is of Saint Catherine and the crucifix has our Jubilee date inscribed on the back. Our best estimate is that a rosary will take two to three weeks to reach the store once it has been ordered. These are a limited production offering to commemo-rate our Jubilee. All of the bead selections offered are the same price when ordered. The rosaries are $80.00 each.

THE FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

FAITH FACTS

Incense in the New Testament The use of incense is also recorded in the New Testa-ment. Frankincense was one of the precious gifts that the Three Kings brought in homage to the Baby Jesus, which was a sign of His role as priest, prophet, and king. In his apocalyptic visions of heaven, Saint John the Apostle recorded that he saw incense being used in God’s heavenly throne: “And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders, I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth; and he went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who was seated on the throne. And when he had taken the scroll, the four living crea-tures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and with golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints” (Revelation 5:6-8). Incense is identified with the prayers of the saints. In the one below, incense is added to the prayers of the saints by an angel, highlighting the mediation of the angels in our worship of God: “And another angel came and stood at the altar with a golden censer; and he was given much incense to min-gle with the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar before the throne; and the smoke of the incense rose with the prayers of the saints from the hand of the angel before God” (Revelation 8:3-4).

COMING HOME TO CATHOLICISM

Do you know someone who may have stepped away from the practice of the Catholic faith but is thinking of “coming home”? Or maybe you have been away for a while and found that the return is a bit “awkward”? Then perhaps you or your friend would like to catch up with what has happened in the Church during the interim. On Saturday, April 28th, we will run a session for those who are interested in “coming home” from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. in Room 1 of the parish cen-ter. Each of the team members has been in the same posi-tion of stepping away and has returned to the practice of the faith. Join us for a non-judgmental, non-committal day to give you the opportunity to share your story, to ask questions, and to have some tools available to help discern if the Lord is calling you back to the practice of the faith.
