Steel is one of three commonly used noncombustible structuralmaterials. (Concrete and masonry are the others.)

Suitable for construction of buildings of all sizes, from singlefamily residences to the tallest skyscrapers.

Starting in 1850's, steel becomes increasingly plentiful with thedevelopment of large scale steel making methods such as theBessemer process.

After the U.S. Civil War, excess steel making capacity sets thestage for the first use of steel in buildings.
