Breaking Open The Word
August 13, 2017 Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading:1 Kings 19-9a, 11-13a After fleeing from the revenge of the King of Israel, Elijah hid in a cave, but at the command of God, he went outside and stood on a mountain. There the Lord came to him, not in the wind nor in the earthquake, but in a “tiny whispering sound.” Second Reading: Romans 9:1-5 Paul is deeply pained because the Jews, in spite of everything that has been given to them, have rejected Christ. Gospel: Matthew 14:22-33 Matthew vividly recounts the event of Jesus walking on the water. Consider/Reflect St. Francis de Sales tells us that we ought to make time to pray each day. When we feel that we don’t have enough time for prayer, we should take even more time. Why? Because in prayer, we aspire to God; we seek to do God’s will and breathe as one with God. In prayer God also inspires us and breathes as one with us. Daily prayer is a compass that helps to keep our focus on God through Christ, in the Spirit. In prayer we become so one with God that our breath and God’s breath are in sync. Then, whether the waters of life are treacherous or smooth, we can see Jesus coming to us, walking with us, and guiding our way. Then we are quiet enough to hear God’s voice in the tiny whispering sound. By taking time to pray, we invite Jesus to come to us; we can better hear His invitation to come to Him, and we can see the face that lessens our doubts and calms our spirits. Breathe deeply. Be one with Jesus, the Son of God, who is always with us. When have you experienced Jesus’ presence in ways that helped you walk across life’s rough waters?

HEALTH “TIP” OF THE MONTH
Vitamin D and Healthy Eating
Vitamin D is an essential nutrient which helps your body absorbs Calcium to maintain strong bones. Vitamin D is in many foods naturally including fatty fish such as Salmon and Tuna, Egg Yolks and Fortified Milk. We also get Vitamin D from the sun. Vitamin D may also protect against Osteoporosis, High Blood Pressure and other diseases. Eat a healthy well-balanced diet and don’t use Vitamin D supplements without discussing it with your physician.
Respect Life Corner
The Respect Life Ministry Committee Meets:
the 3rd Thursday of each month in the Faith Formation Center @1:30 PM
As a gift from God, every human life is sacred from conception to natural death. The life and dignity of every person must be respected and protected at every stage and in every condition.
The right to life is the first and most fundamental principle of human rights that leads Catholics to actively work for a world of greater respect for human life and greater commitment to justice and peace. To achieve this goal, the priority plan includes ongoing education, prayer, policy and advocacy efforts to mobilize the Catholic community on issues of life, justice, and peace. In this way the Catholic community celebrates the gift of human life and witnesses to the Good News of Jesus Christ.
That's what we in The Respect Life Ministry are trying to do. We will be meeting on the third Thursday of September. Why don't you join us?

Healing the Wounds of Abortion Rachel’s Vineyard Post-Abortive Retreat
The psychological and spiritual wounds of abortion can be sharp, deep and crippling. You may feel a deep numbness and may not be able to name the pain or recognize any of the symptoms. It can also have a devastating impact on the father or grandparents of the aborted child and friend/s of the mother. You do not have to continue to hide in shame and fear. Rachel’s Vineyard’s Retreat is a chance to focus on this painful time in your life through a supportive non-judgmental process, in an atmosphere of confidentiality, understanding, and compassion. It is designed to help both women and men experience the mercy and compassion of God. If you have suffered through an abortion and have
isolated yourself from healing and forgiveness, please consider attending our retreat weekend
August 25th – 27th, 2017. For more information, contact Judy Warenkiewicz @ 732-536-6871. All
inquiries are strictly confidential.
THE FLAME OF LOVE ROSARY JOIN US!

PRESENTATION OF THE GIFTS Anyone who wishes to bring up the gifts at our weekend liturgies is asked to please contact the usher who is stationed at the main entrance of the church (by the baptismal font) at least 15 minutes prior to the start of Mass. This will enable the ushers to honor your request in a more efficient manner and help to avoid any possible duplication. We invite ALL parishioners to participate.

YOUR VISIT CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
TO A HOSPICE PATIENT Heartland Hospice is looking for dedicated, caring volunteers with an interest in visiting hospice patients and their families in Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland and Ocean counties. Your volunteer service is based on your choice of commitment. We will place you close to your home to provide a friendly visit to patients who are on their final journey. Heartland volunteers offer support, companionship and practical, compassionate help. Some interact directly with patients and families. Others prefer to work behind the scenes in the office setting. As a volunteer, you help determine which tasks you’re best suited to perform. The tasks of volunteers include: Staying with patients so family members can get a much-needed rest
Reading or providing a comforting touch Playing or singing soothing music to patients Keeping vigil with patients in their final hours Providing a friendly visit to lift a patient's spirits Vet-to-Vet volunteers: Military Veterans
providing support to veterans, sharing their special bond.
Certified Pet Visitors also needed. Spanish speaking volunteers in demand
These and other tasks are why hospice volunteers are such an essential part of the Heartland Experience. Volunteer training is offered throughout the year to fit each person's schedule. Call the volunteer coordinator at (609) 641-4675 for more information or to register for the next training session.

HEARING LOOP SYSTEM
For those of us living with hearing loss, it is often difficult to understand the words spoken during Mass due to the challenging acoustical listening environment. In an effort to improve clarity and understanding, we have received a donation and installed an induction loop listening system. To benefit from this system, you will need to select a seat in the 2 sections of pews (when facing the Altar), to the left of the Baptismal Font and switch your hearing aid, cochlear implant or other listening device to the “T-Coil” or “telephone” position.
